Rooting, is the risk high? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

If I follow all instructions correctly will my phone not get bricked? Is it just luck to do with whether your phone gets bricked or is it because you download the wrong file? Is it worth rooting also? What are the advantages? I don't have an SD card so if I root would I lose all of my apps/pictures?

It's very safe no you won't lose anything, just install a rooted kernel and your fine.

I think you need to edit your post.
Dont you mean "is it worth rooting etc".
You need to spend some time reading rules and guides as its all very lame questions your asking and that doesnt go down well here.

Sorry, i just needed to know the basics. I probably shouldn't of rushed and should of searched instead.

No problem,Im just advising you.I spent a week reading stuff before flashing anything and I still ran into problems.
If you have the GT-I9100 model I just posted how to root the phone using the stock recovery which saves using Odin in the meantime.
You could try that now if your on ICS firmware.

Yes I'm on 4.0.4. I'll have a look now thank you

Be very careful since your on 4.0.4 stock.
Thats why you flash the siyah kernel straight after you flash the su/busybox file.
siyah-s2.v4.1.5.zip is the one for you.

Would it be easier waiting for JB to come officialy? I only want to root to get a custom rom on jelly bean, well I haven't really looked at other things you can do

You can install the leaked lsj one then root that.It could be a couple of months before official one comes out.
Or try custom ones like rootbox etc.
Theres also the option of trying one, then making a nand, and so on and so on.Then you can just restore the nand of whichever one you like.

As a new user that is the single best advice you can take. 99% of issues new users have are caused simply by them rushing into things, not searching, not reading, not learning and then doing something wrong.

I can make a tutorial how to do it, its different then just install SuperSU and a kernel, but it works very good, rooted 4 S2s on this way.
If you read the instructions you will root it succesfully.

1. Install Kies (no need to run)
2. Reboot device into download mode and connect to USB.
3. Load up ODIN.
4. Load Siyah kernel into PDA.
5. Flash.
Its that simple.
Installing a custom kernel will root, install cwm, su etc. No need to mess about with any of the guides that have you installing separate things.

That is a bug in stock 4.0.4 kernel. When you flash a custom one like Siyah you're completely safe from the emmc bug so have no need to worry about it whatsoever unless you flash stock firmware in odin again.

Total Noob, need guidance please!

OK, so I have a Samsung Fascinate. I asked a friend at work (we are wireless consultants) about rooting an android phone. Well he took it and rooted it and did not show me anything or teach me anything about it. So i have a rooted phone and I dont know what to do now. He said that he could not get Odin on my phone. Ive seen the name Odin used a lot, but unfortunately I dont know what that really does. I guess I just need it explained more clearly. Also I would like to unroot my phone and do it myself, so I can learn how to do it and more about it, but I have no idea how. Ive seen links for unrooting, but most involve Odin, which I do not have. Is there a better way to root your phone, or will any way work? Do I install Odin pre root? I need help! So, if anybody would like to help me i would be greatly appreciative. I really want to learn more about these things and desperately need somebody's guidance.

Odin is a program that you download on your PC. Google it. If I was near my computer, I would post a link. With Odin, you can push files to your phone when it is turned off and even when the battery is out. If you want to start rooting and flashing custom roms and kernels you must learn about Odin.

Look, rooting is simple. You really don't need to learn how to do it. What you need to learn is clockworkmod recovery and flashing custom roms and kernels. But, if you insist on learning, I will provide you with links to do so when I get off work. For now, copy and paste this in your browser. It should help you until I can further:

This is a great how-to on installing clockworkmod recovery (CWM) and using it to flash files. It even includes screenshot visual aids:
http://forum.androidcentral.com/ver...-clockworkmod-recovery-w-screen-captures.html
flashing stuff is easy in cwm.. once you get that on your phone, flashing is as simple as selecting a file and pushing a button. the phone does all the work for you

Not knowing if your coworker installed a custom ROM or just rooted your phone and left it at stock, and considering you are just learning rooting and flashing, the best CWM to install for you would be this one:
http://www.multiupload.com/SHV23CASBP
If you read the thread I linked you to, that CWM file is in there and you should understand the basics of flashing zip files in CWM.
If you are still stock, your phone will revert back to stock recovery and you will lose this CWM once you boot your phone unless you boot directly to CWM after you flash the CWM file in ODIN then flash a custom kernel in CWM. So you may want to read the above linked thread on placing zip files on your sd card to flash in CWM, then follow the instructions in the thread to flash one of these nonvoodoo custom kernels:
ComaVolt from times_infinity: http://db.tt/l0LPzy7
PBJ from imnuts: https://sites.google.com/a/imnuts.n..._fascinate_sv_novoodoo.zip?attredirects=0&d=1
Either one will work fine.

[Q] GS2 i777 Root/ROM questions..

When I bought my GS2 I wasn't going to root it due to warranty issues but I see I can return my phone to factory specs if need be so now I''m contemplating rooting and flashing my GS2 for mainly these 4 reasons:
#1 improve battery life.
#2. get rid of the slight Lag we have with our GS2s
#3 get rid of AT&T's bloatware.
#4 it looks like it will be a LONG time before AT&T releases ICS so I imagine it will be modded and available for our i777s quite soon?
Any recommendations for the best rom for my needs would be greatly appreciated!!! TIA
The first thing I'd recommend is making sure you follow the sticky below so you don't increase the flash counter when flashing. A restore will not reset it.
As to the other recommendations, I'd simply suggest fully reading the initial posts in any thread for a rom/kernel you find interesting FULLY along with reading input from people who have tried said rom /kernels. Be fully aware of what you're attempting to do and always backup before any critical changes, etc. Basic stuff but worth mentioning. Oh and have fun.

Entropy512's return to stock/root package would be step number one.
Continuing to follow creepyncrawly's instructions flash entropy512's most recent kennel.
That gives you clockworkmod recovery in place of stock recovery.
Through cwm you can create backups that when flashed still do not trip the flash counter. And the same for any roms flashed through cwm, flash counter won't be tripped.
Just make sure you have a good backup. Can be worth copying it over to a computer.
I'd recommend flashing unnamed rom. Very close to stock but much better battery life and speed. Plus plenty of themes are being made for it. And it will give you an in general idea of the current things a custom rom changes. That way when you look at other roms you'll better understand the features they have.
If in doubt, always ask questions.

Thank you so much for the info, presently waiting on SDMicro ordered from Newegg then moving forward with your suggestions... Have some serious reading/researching to do tonight
I have been running UnNamed on Entropy512's kernel since I got the phone, and the battery life has been phenomenal; when I was testing, I was able to get over 2 days with light phone usage. gtg465x got rid of the home button lag and removed a lot of bloat from the ROM (see: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1299474), but I also manually removed some additional apk's that I never used but found running in the background.
I will eventually get around to experimenting with other ROMs once I have the time to see if there is anything that I like better, but for now I would have to say that I am very happy with the state of my phone.
Good luck with your ROM hunt. And as Kadin said: have fun!

If you do trip the counter, you can use a USB Jig to reset it.

I have downloaded Entropy's "Odin3 One-Click Downloader Stock I-777 UCKH7 with Root no BL" to Root my GS2.
After that I just put UnNamed ROM "update-unnamed-v1.3.1-full" on my SD Micro and follow the Installation Instructions at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1299474 and that's it??
The Safe Counter is safe and back to stock is doable??

I take it "Odin3 One-Click Downloader Stock I-777 UCKH7 with Root no BL" is NOT a CWM Kernel, I'm a bit confused, I flash Entropy's Kernel using Odin3 One-Click to root but then have to reflash that kernel with one with a CWM?
If this is true which I believe it is which Kernel w/CWM is recomended in my application (using Entropy's Odin3 1-Click Root and UnNamed ROM)??
After you use the 1 click your phone is rooted but does not have a custom kernel with cwm.
You put the custom kernel on in I believe step 2. He lists a number of ways to put the entropy kernel on.
After that you will be able to boot into cwm and load your custom rom.

I'm not sure what all kies can back up. Connect to your phone and backup what you can. If you don't save it to your PC, you can't recover it.
Just know flashing a kernel through odin will trip your flash counter. Only unmodified stock kernel can be flashed through odin without tripping the flash counter. Though mobile odin can flash any kernel without tripping the flash counter.

Darn, back to reading up some more lol, don't want to trip the counter.. Trying to keep it as simple as possible being my first time round..
Creepys guide is perfect
As long as you follow Creepy's guide it doesn't trip the counter, I recently did it on my phone after not having any idea on what to do or how to do it regarding root. I have windows and rooted using Entropy512's Return/Unbrick to Stock, Kernel + Rooted System Package with Modem using Odin3 One-Click Downloader. I just verified my Counter Still says NO, with means the method worked without tripping it. I think the previous post was just so you understood a non-stock kernel would trip it, but since his kernel is based on stock it roots the device without tripping the counter, then you can follow the rest of the walkthrough, it's pretty easy. One note is that I used android terminal emulator to put the kernal with cwm on there, mostly because using adb sounded too complicated, if you do this and put the ZImage in the right place it's a piece of cake once cwm is on there.
Good luck, I'm no pro but the people here are excellent, just do your research and you can find almost anything

[Q] Rooting advice and help with what to do with it

Hi I rooted my galaxy s2 and then unrooted it as I did'nt know what to do with it as overclockig and changing cpu frequencies did'nt seem to do anything. I read on your forum bit, that samsung can tell if you have rooted the device or not, how do I avoid that.
When I rooted I downloaded the original Kernal and the yellow triangle went away. Then I unrooted via superoneclick.
Then when I went on to samsung kies the firmware was'nt there, so I did a factory reset and now it is back and is up to date the firmware version is there now.
I'm guessing I should've back my phone up before hand but how and should I have done things the way I did?
My appologies for the war and peace but I am nooob and really want to learn.
What I have learned is off youtube and I could'nt get all the info I wanted, like where to download a safe superone click root.

I wasn't going to this question because 30 seconds of Googling would give you every answer you want and more but hey, it's new years, and I'm in a festive spirit.
So your question, first, "what is CWM?". CWM (Clockwork mod) is replacement for the standard Samsung recovery suite which allows you, in addition to the standard functions, to restore data, backup data, flash new zips and a wealth of other great stuff. Basically its your best friend when flashing new ROMS, Kernels, etc.
If you want to do anything above and beyond the bog standard tweaking with your phone (basically everything you find here on XDA) you will need to use CWM. It comes with any and every rooted Kernel you flash. Every Kernel which has root will have CWM. So if you had rooted your phone by installing a custom Kernel you would have it. (side note, you get to recovery by holding volume up + home button + power button for a few seconds).
Now down to how to get CWM and to super one click. If you made a timeline of XDA and rooting, super one click would be at the very very start. Its the dinosaur of rooting. I recommend strongly against using it, to be honest I didnt even know you could still use it. Anyway, the best way to root your phone is by flashing a rooted Kernel. I will presume your phone is now unrooted and you are running stock Kernel + stock ROM. You want to download Odin (http://www.mediafire.com/?a54dbk53vhpkjto) and then flash a corresponding rooted Kernel to your ROM (I recommend CF-Root by Chainfire). I'm not going to tell you how to flash stuff with Odin because there are millions of guides out there, just don't tick re-partitioning. What I mean by corresponding is it build of the Kernel should relate to your ROM. If you are running a XWKK5 ROM for example, you would flash a XWKK5 Kernel. It's pretty clear in Chainfire's CF Root thread what the builds of all the Kernels are.
Anyway I hope that helps you, and I hope you're grateful I've just taken 5 minutes to explain to you things that you could have found guides on written by people much more experienced than myself in 2 minutes of googling.
I thanked you because its New Year! (@postfatal)
Good luck with the rooting and make sure you use the search functions of these forums, a wealth of information is to be had and the stickies are well worth a look!!!
BTW rooting will void your warranty.
Thank you postfatal. I have done some googleing and have read up un quite a bit of stuff, but still getting boggled by all the info.
Maybe I will just give this up as abad job.
Thank you and happy new year.

Hi,
Belive me, i was just like you for 3-4 days ago, and by now i almost can everything that's needed to be known about rooting. Almost everyone here make it sound so hard to rooting, that's because they can't eplain things in "noob languages".
If you still don't know how to do this, PM me back and i will help you.
thanks
Actually, Chainfire's CFRoot instructions couldn't be simpler. There's only 10 steps (7 that actually require you to do something)
I don't see what's difficult about:-
*checking your current kernel
*finding the corresponding CFRoot kernel
*downloading same (and downloading Odin if necessary)
*unzipping the tar
*firing up Odin
*putting your phone in download mode (volume down/home button/power button)
*plugging one end of a USB cable into the USB port on your PC/the other into the USB port of your phone
*clicking on PDA in Odin & navigating to where you saved the CFRoot kernel tar file
*clicking "start"
*waiting until the process completes/Odin saying "OK" then unplug the USB cable/wait for your phone to reboot
Or am I missing something ?

ICS Root without flashing kernel or having recovery?

My friend has an S2 he wants me to root, and I'm having trouble.
I've tried the one click method from windows computers though they don't seem to work as he is on ICS.
The ICS alternative says reboot to recovery etc, though obviously he doesn't have recovery so I can't do that either.
Of course I'm going to be told to root it via flashing, though while following the guide, the phone soft-bricked and wouldn't turn on (yellow triangle) though luckily I found the Orange UK Restore Package and now it's back to stock!
When I tried to flash it said use the most similar kernel you can find, and so I did, and it didn't work!
The kernel he has is I9100PBVLP6 and there was not an insecure kernel of that available.
Can anyone help?

Of course I'm going to be told to root it via flashing, though while following the guide, the phone soft-bricked and wouldn't turn on (yellow triangle) though luckily I found the Orange UK Restore Package and now it's back to stock!
When I tried to flash it said use the most similar kernel you can find, and so I did, and it didn't work!
The kernel he has is I9100PBVLP6 and there was not an insecure kernel of that available.
Can anyone help?

Your friend has the UK Orange NFC phone. Use LP7 Insecure kernel.
http://download.chainfire.eu/158/CF-Root/SGS2/CF-Root-SGS2_XW_XEN_LP7-v5.4-CWM5.zip?retrieve_file=1
You will have the yellow triangle after flashing and your binary flash counter would have increased by 1.
You can use triangle away to remove the symbol and reset the flash counter to zero.
Or have a look at the Root/Unroot guide in my signature.

That's brilliant! Thanks so much. I'll have to convince him to let me now. He doesn't want me going near his phone again haha
If your friend now doesn't want you to go to near his phone, let him root it himself or live with it the way it is.
Statements like "he obviously doesn't have recovery" when he obviously does lead me to believe you'll only damage his phone anyway.

So I just flash this under PDA? Will this give just root and no recovery?

Why does he obviously have recovery? His phone is exactly how he got it. Unless they give you recovery now? I used to have a Spica (piece of crap) which I had to root in order to get recovery onto it. And he has no idea how to root and his phone is being slow and crashes a lot, so he wants to make it better, I told him a custom ROM would help.

All new or old S2s should have recovery albeit stock 3e recovery," if they have not installed another recovery ". Try it!
Power down. Then at the same time press:- volume up/home button/power button.

You told him bogus information then.

Head over to here: http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/?page=3&t=1&o=1&m=GT-I9100&r=1#regiona, & find the specific firmware for your friends device & flash in PDA via Odin! (no need to find a seperate kernel to flash, as it will be included in the official firmware package!)
At this point you'll have no yellow triangle on your boot up splash screen, & no flash count!
Then head over to here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501719 & root the device using the instructions given! (you'll need an external sd-card in your device to put the files on for rooting!)
Still no yellow triangle on boot splash screen, & also no extra flash count!
Finally, install Triangle Away from here "IF NEEDED": https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.triangleaway&hl=en, & "MAKE SURE" it gives the exact same flash count number as is in download mode, then click "Reset Counter".
Job done, official stock firmware with root (fast, stable & reliable!) with no yellow triangle or flash count visible!
What Samsung official firmware site? Even if such a thing existed why would the custom binary counter go up? Think about it. Also, OP already made it clear he's incapable of following those root instructions, as he apparently (and obviously) doesn't have recovery.

What will help before you potentially brick your friends phone is to read the stickies.
Stickies here
Hopefully you might learn the basics of rooting/unrooting and installing firmware before its to late

It's just his way, don't worry about it!
1: This samsung firmware site: http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/?page=3&t=1&o=1&m=GT-I9100&r=1#regiona
Obviously exists eh!
2: As I mentioned in my (helpfull!) post, the method I directed him to uses temporary "Touch CWM Recovery" for him to get into to root!
3: The method he tried was the oneclick method! That's not the method I directed him to! (try reading the post properly before commenting, as you've so graciously pointed out to me in the past!)
I hope this answers all of your descrepancies oinkylicious!

Actually Samfirmware.com is an unofficial site, not endorsed by Samsung at all.
although it is where to get the Samsung firmware's for all their phones.

Fair enough, well I won't split ends with you & thanks for the usefull information bored_stupid!
1) not official
2) it wouldn't go up "AGAIN" after flashing official firmware. Writing wrong information in CAPS doesn't make it right
3) I know, see 4)
4) he tried both and fell at the first hurdle.
Any more? Come at me bro.

Really, I'm trying to help the bloke & all you can pick up on is "NOT OFFICIAL"?? please!
Any more? Come at me bro?? How old?...........
The more you post, the more foolish you look. Flashing an official binary from download mode will not increase your counter.

Like I said, how old?
Tell me something? what increases your binary count oinkylicious?
Flashing an unofficial binary from download mode. Such as CF-root or any of the custom kernels.
I just don't like people spreading incorrect information.

I stand corrected & edited your honour, at last, something creative to say
You's da man, whoop whoop!
he said the phone wouldn't boot & yellow triangle!
yellow triangle as far as I know= binary counter gone up!
Apart from using a jig, for which he'd also have to flash an older bootloader coz the phone's on ICS & it wouldn't work otherwise, what would you suggest to reset it?
Not false information I'm giving m8, just trying to be helpfull, & I can't see in what I originally posted how I wasn't trying to be helpfull really!? But you obviously can

How to start over flashing SGS2

Hi a bit back I tried flashing my SGS2 with Cyanogenmod12 and it didn't go great. No boot loops or bricking but it was supposed to be an upgrade, a dirty flash (i think thats the term) so I thought ok, I will just do a clean flash by wiping everything buuuut, no go, I tried with the new recovery thingy that apparently came with CM12 and it is not seeing the zip for the rom or gapps. I then thought I'd try flashing a few recovery rom via fastboot then retry but I can't get ADB/fastboot to work now? More accurately I can't get the driver working to see my SGS2, on two different computers, tried this adb/fastboot package and this one.
Now I can't even remember what ODIN is or if it requires that the same drivers that ADB/fastboot do but is that even an option?
Any help would really really be appreciated because I am at witts end here as I have a near useless phone that totally doesn't have to be!

Good luck fella.....My advice is to read through the first post in it's entirety BEFORE starting any of the processes, then pick out the parts that seem most appropriate/relevant to your case.....If that doesn't work, then work through every applicable step in order as many times as it takes to recover your device.....

Well that worked! Kinda I think. I finally managed to get ODIN to work and flashed the 4.1.2 JellyBean leaked ROM so now I have what I think is a stock recovery. My next question is can I flash CM12 with that stock recovery or do I need to somehow put something like twrp on first then flash CM12?
Thanks (so much) again!

Unfortunately you can't flash *any* custom roms with a stock recovery.
The only thing you *can* flash using the stock recovery is PhilZ kernel which will root your phone and provide you with a custom recovery that you can use to flash a rom.......
Here's the thread link....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1877270
Look for the version of the kernel that matches your current on device build and then look for the ZIP version of that kernel.....All the instructions are in the OP....
