So,
I've read reviews and tech specs and on paper at least the flyer seems to outwit the galaxy tab, which is the only other real contender.
So as my sig says, I've had a desire for ages now and think its the best thing since latex! So I am heavily bias towards getting another HTC.
BUT .....................
With a lack of Dev interest, and still tentatively waiting on any kind of official HTC unlocking of bootloaders, is it still a better choice to go with than the well established dev community for the galaxy tab?
An a few questions for peeps already using the flyer, is it possible at all to do HDMI mirroring or at least HDMI video playback? An can you access the internal memory as a flash drive as you would with the desire?
Many thanks in advance.
Sent from my melting desire using plastic smoke signals and xda mobile.
There is a Flyer versus Galaxy Tab 10.1 thread in this subforum, so you should check that out. Although the GT 10.1 is a much larger form factor, and running Honeycomb. So not quite the same comparison you are talking about, with the 1st gen Galaxy Tab's 7-inch form factor and existing developer community.
I too am a strong supporter of HTC (on my 3rd HTC phone), and that is one of the main reasons I got the Flyer. I haven't checked out what the Gingerbread update for the 1st gen Galaxy Tab is like, or custom ROMs. But the stock Flyer experience is much more polished than the GT stock Froyo ROM. Plus, the Flyer has higher CPU and memory specs.
I'm a bit concerned about developer interest as well. Hopefully, things will ramp up, the device is still very new. Not sure if its the locked bootloader, HTC's stronger protections against rooting on more recent products, or an increasingly crowded tablet market, that is slowing up developer interest. But I'm still keeping my fingers crossed . . .
Why not wait a couple of months for the 10" HTC tablet, the bigger brother of the Flyer?
7" tablets are for different use than the 10" devices, just like the difference between netbook and 15" laptop.
for HDMI you will need to purchase an additional cable http://www.htcaccessorystore.com/uk/p_htc_item.aspx?i=209996
I have bee fooling around with the Flyer since monday and I am extremely happy with it. The thre main uses are: reading while commuting - most time in Pulse/Reader, using the Notes and Email app in meetings at work and reading and media consumption back home.
The 7 inch form factor is real win for most uses except for couch surfing. Sitting the tablet on my lap I would not mind the extra realestate of the 10 inch tablet. Sense makes me pretty much forget I am not using Honeycomb specific apps.
I wouldn't mind the Flyer being a bit lighter.
Overall I give the Flyer a big thumbs up. And I still consider the flyer a novelty that will attract the developer crowd eventually.

I totally agree with you ! a 7" tablets is the best choice for mobility, and Flyer is the one!
I have been trying all the tablets, but at the end of the day, if you are on the move and need portability, the flyer is the way to go. If you are just couch surfing, then get a 10".
I have been using my flyer for everything from couch surfing, to taking notes in meetings. It works very well, and is very reliable. It's my favorite tablet, and a keeper.

One thing to consider is that the 7" Tab is not likely to see much updating from Samsung in the future, my guess is that in their eyes it's EOL. They have new machines to support.
However there is a strong dev community for it and they will likely make improvements for a long time. That being said, it may never make the jump to Honeycomb or Ice Cream Sandwich.
The Flyer, being new, is just starting it's vendor support life cycle and they SAY it will be upgraded to at least Honeycomb (no firm date, but at least they are saying it will be).
If they do unlock the boot-loader, which would most likely happen during a major update I would think (keep it locked until the HC upgrade to make it easier on tech support maybe?), the Flyer may end up being a highly supported device, just because it's one of the few 7" machines out there.
I very much considered the Tab, even had it in my Amazon cart for a while before deciding that I wanted to buy the Flyer. Would have preferred to spend less, but I'll likely use it for a number of years so $500 vs $350 isn't much of a problem. I needed a 7" screen for portability and I've been very happy with it so far.
Several reasons for Flyer over GT 7. Better processor, Better Screen (Super LCD vs TFT), Sense, Pen integration (don't spend $80, get a Fujitsu one for $30.) It is flat out faster in use. Better Rear camera. Stronger case. Longer support life. Def worth the $150 difference.
I have a Flyer but it is going back. I've enjoyed it for a week now but it's not satisfying me 100%.
Coming from a Galaxy S phone with much better codec support out of the box, the Flyer is disappointing. At least there's Mobo player.
No way to Bluetooth tether since Android hates adhoc networks, annoying (even though the Transformer apparently does BT tether).
Very nice device and the form factor is nice, nearly perfect, but at $500 plus tax I expected a bit more satisfaction.
So far the only thing I am missing is the phone.
Is it possible to add the HTC Phone into the Flyer by an firmware upgrade ?
I also am considering the Flyer just waiting for a price drop or if I can save enough for it. Few questions however:
1. Does the flyer do hdmi mirroring or just video playback?
2. Are the games user friendly from onlive ?
3. What type of movies aren't playing well? I really don't need the highest quality movies as long as its decent quality I'm ok with that?
4. Also is the notes app well developed im an engineer student so the idea of taking notes during a class like dynamics or controls writing hints and drawing diagrams on slides
Sounds very appealing. How well would that notes app work if I'm constantly writing?
I was looking at the galaxy tab but it seems to lack external ports such as usb microsd slot and hdmi. I'm a big hdmi user so thar automatically cancels any tablet for me if I can't use hdmi mirroring.
So I'm also curious about the Ee pad memo and the webos touchpad. Does anyone know if the touchpad and eepad memo will have hdmi mirroring thru cable or will an external port be needed?

Personally... if the Flyer was released @ the same time as the Desire HD I'd have picked it up in a heart beat.
But with Dual Core comming up....
I'd say wait till HTC nxt offering.
I recently bought the Flyer along with the Playbook and iPad 2. Having them together was the easiest way to compare for me. The Playbook killed the Flyer in all categories for me with the exception of app selection and quality. I literally only found 5 apps that I wanted to download. The Flyer performed pretty well with the exception of many FC. HTC Watch adds a cool way to purchase content. The cam and especially video recording was not nearly as good as the PB, but better than the iPad in that dept.
In the end I kept the iPad 2. For me it was the biggest bang for the same money. There's a crazy amount of high quality apps like Hulu, Netflix and tons of solid games. I use my tablets at home for web browsing and at work for watching videos and listening to podcasts on my breaks. The larger screen is much better for me, but there is something to be said for the portable nature of the smaller screen. If the price was lower on the Flyer and included the pen for the wifi only version I'd recommend it highly, but the pricing with the pen is seriously too high. Sense 3.0 is pretty fantastic, but reminds me of a bigger version of my Evo.
I'm an Android phone user/lover but I have yet to find an Android tablet that does it for me.

Actually, it's Sense 2.1, not 3.0.
I have now had the flyer for 4 days now and I owned every tablet on the market, and the Flyer is bar-none the best I have used.
I wouldn't sell this things for a $1000, I love the Flyer. Is very underrated in every way, plus the performance wipes other tablets *** thus far.

Sense 3.0 has the "ring" multi-function lock screen, HTC Trace on the keyboard, and new weather app.
Or does the Flyer have Sense 2.1 with some 3.0 features?

sorry but the playbook can't touch the Flyer, everything about the playbook is lame. Also the Flyer out performers the playbook as the Flyer is much snappier and faster even On a single core.
compared my flyer to a co-workers playbook today.
A little off topic but I didn't want to create a new thread....will this sub-forum be used for the EVO View 4G when it's released? It's the same tablet but with wimax.

so im highly debating on getting a tablet this month since im going on a cross country road trip in august. i decided i didnt want to bring my netbook due to the fact that all i need in a device is to browse the internet, play movies, and play music.
so my question to you guys is if this tablet would be good for me. im so confused because i had my heart set on 4 different devices and then would change my mind the next day. those devices were a rooted nook color, samsung galaxy tab 7, asus transformer, and the htc flyer. has anyone else had these tabs would like to chime in and say why they went with the flyer instead? i read the forums and also played with demo units in best buy so i have an idea about build quality and size for all 4 units. i already have a mytouch 4g running 2.3.4 so i dont see why i should carry the flyer if its running 2.3.3. i could get the asus transformer for a cheaper price as well as honeycomb. but i read a lot of good reviews on this forum about the flyer so im getting confused. lol
i neeeddd helpppppp in choosing
So what is your longer term use case?
The Flyer is a great size, much better than a Transformer for instance for me. I found it more stable and faster than a Transformer. Android 2.3.3 (soon 2.3.4) with Sense seemed better than Honeycomb for me.
I use mine as an e-book reader, web browser and for a few games and videos. It is fantastic for these things. I personally dont even carry the pen any more, but it worked well when I tried it if that is your thing.

so, go for Flyer then... beside of that, if you'll get a 3G version, you'll have SMS and MMS out from box, which I don't know how many other tablets does with out hacking.... I'm happy with my Flyer, and i have it from more than a month..

thats the exact reason i wanted 1 as well. I couldnt be any happier with my choice, worked out great when i had a 2 day business trip to phx earlier this week.
heck right now im sitting out back in the hammock surfing the forums in between watching old episodes of Married With Children on Netflix
I currently own the flyer and the xoom. I find myself using the flyer more due to weight and portability. Honestly, the flyer is more responsive. It could be honeycomb problem, but it does fly when using. The op should go try it at bestbuy.

ive actually played with all 4 of the devices i listed minus the rooted nook color. ive only played with the stock firmware with the nook.
honestly they all seemed like nice devices. i just dont know if i should get the flyer or my other top choice which is the asus transformer. granted its heavier but it does have a bigger screen and honeycomb for a cheaper price. im just hoping other users who have had the tablets i listed could say why they chose the flyer instead of the others. im mostly concerned with usability and hardware/software performance more so than the screen size.
The Flyer specs (CPU, memory) beat the crap out of the Galaxy Tab 7" and a rooted Nook Color. So unless cost is your main concern, I'd go for more up-to-date technology.
As far as the Flyer vs. the Transformer, it comes down mostly to what form factor you like better, in other words screen size versus portability. And if you like Honeycomb, and the Transformer's keyboard accessory, then those are factors as well (although the Flyer is allegedly getting HC "soon").
As to why I bought the Flyer, I'm a big fan of HTC products. They make excellent products, and I've been waiting forever for them to release a tablet. The build quality is top notch. Some of the other tablets are okay in this regard, but usually plastic, and don't compare to the Flyer's sleek aluminum unibody.
I have a Galaxy Tab 7 inch and the Flyer 3G.
The Flyer is noticeably heavier than the 7 inch tab and does not have the phone dialler that the tab does, but having said that it is a better tablet by far.
My galaxy tab is rooted and overclocked but is no where near as capable as the Flyer whose processor just seems to munch through every task I throw at it.
Things I don't like about the Flyer are the touch screen which scratches so easily it might as well be made of butter! Appalling really for such a high end device that comes with a pen too, read the threads about scratched screens here.
If you do get one fit a screen protector.
The other disadvantage for me at the moment is no root capability although that may change soon?
The notes app with the pen is useful and coupled with evernote I use this a lot for work too.
I like HTC Sense, but at the moment I am using ADW launcher as I prefer the extra customisation options it gives, I use it on my galaxy s2 phone too.
IMHO the Flyer is the best 7 inch tab out there at the moment and I really like the portability of this form factor as it can be taken everywhere easily enough.
Sent from my HTC Flyer P510e using XDA Premium App
If you want portability, go with a 7" tablet. But a larger 10" screen will make a better replacement for a netbook, in my opinion.
My Flyer is great portability and I really appreciate the pen integration for the workplace. Perfect for further transforming my workflow to digital. And much more discreet than pulling out the iPad for business meetings. Again pen integration is great for note taking in meetings. The portability is also great to bring guidebooks on travel. Drops into a pant pocket...
At home, my iPad stays upstairs in the bedroom as a substitute for my laptop. I can remote into my workstations in the basement and my laptop in the living room. The larger screen is more comfortable for surfing the internet, reading RSS feeds and browsing magazines. iOS got tiring though... no flash, no avi / mkv, difficult to download files... the garden walls got pretty tall.
Get an ASUS Transformer as a replacement for your laptop/netbook. Android, large screen, GPS, microSD, 802.11n... no 3G, but there's a Starbucks on every corner or an Android phone as a hotspot.
Just honest advice.
I was wondering if there any users with the Flyer/View that also have the galaxy tab that can give us a good comparison review. I have been looking on google at the few reviews that are out there and they are all over the place. A couple of the reviews mention the flyer getting sluggish when running several apps. All of the reviews seem to have been done using sense 2.1. I didn't see any type of performance review using a different launcher on the flyer like ADW EX. Really like how the flyer looked compared to the galaxy tab but I was wondering if it was worth giving up root access and all the custom rom's/themes/hacks/tweaks that are available for the galaxy tab.
Yes i've used the galaxy tab for 6 months before i bought the flyer.I really liked the tab but the flyer is much faster en the touchscreen is way better i think. Also the sense launcher on the flyer is great! On my tab i used launcher pro and i've tried it on my flyer but sense is better on the flyer.I do not have any problems running several apps at the same time.It always works flawlessly! On the tab when i opened the photogallery it took a while to load the photos,on the flyer you see the photos within 3 seconds or so.I loved the tab but the flyer is better.

Also obvious the Flyer has a Wacom digitiser. This also means you have a Notes, Office and PDF app that can make use of stylus input.
I thought the battery life of the Flyer was better, but with the latest Tab update the battery life has improved. Finally, I prefer the HTC Sense UI over the Samsung overlay over Android.
I've had my Evo View for a week and it feels like the next generation of Galaxy Tab. More fits on the screen, its faster and has much more memory than the Tab.

Galaxy tab is light but feels cheap. Flyer is a little heavey and difficult to hold unless I put it in a case. Overall, I like Flyer better.
i dont have the samsung Galaxy but I try it at shop (BQ Da vinci too) and I like both. Money, money, money...
But finally, I decide buy the Flyer... and at the moment im really happy for it.
The flyer is really expensive but is a great product : D: D: D
I also have both the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7/3G and the HTC Evo View 4g...
Given that 7 months is considered an eternity in today's rapidly advancing gadget world, it goes without saying that the HTC Evo View is a considerably superior tablet device when compared to the Galaxy Tab 7.
Little things that always annoyed me about my Galaxy Tab 7, like the longish boot times and somewhat sluggish screen transitions (I'm using Launcher Pro+ on both), are completely rectified on my Evo View.
Personally, I have no interest in HTC's Sense homescreen replacement (it waste too much screen real-estate), but I absolutely prefer the work they've done on the associated apps to make them much more tablet-friendly, all of of which work so well that I actually prefer them to those on my Honeycomb-based Motorola Xoom or Asus Transformer, and certainly over what Samsung did on the Galaxy Tab 7.
As far as concerns of 'sluggishness' on the Evo View, I have yet to experience any, and I've had the device since the day it went on sale, using it for hours each day.
Additionally, I initially tried several different HS replacements when I bought my Evo View (including ADW EX. Go Launcher, et al) and found Launcher Pro+ to offer the best compromise between performance and features.
All things considered, the HTC Evo View is easily the best 7 inch tablet currently on the market, with great build-quality, exceptional ergonomics, a speedy processor, expertly developed tablet-centric apps, and surprisingly good battery life - It's a winner!

It truly is a LOVE/HATE relationship. N-Trig is nowhere near as accurate or smooth as Wacom, but the price and battery savings weigh in its favor. If I am slow and steady with the pen and THINK about what I am writing, the N-Trig is acceptable. If I hurry, like trying to take notes during a telephone conversation, it skips letters, vectors, and is generally a PITA. That's when I really miss my HP 2740p convertible Tablet PC with Wacom.

I like them both. In fact, I had sold my original Tab and bought a new one, which I received today. It was rooted and flashed as soon as I could download the files needed. The Flyer has a faster processor, but my Tab runs just as fast running Overcome's Gingerbread OC'd to 1.4. I would honestly give the nod to the Tab at this moment because it is leaps and bounds beyond the Flyer on the development side. I am happy with the Flyer as it is, but once there is a HC port or official release, it will be the perfect tablet. The 7" form factor is the absolute best. For what it is worth, the Tab OC'd to 1.4 hits right around 2100 on the Quadrant scores and the Flyer right around 1900. Like I said, for what it is worth.
Netflix works on Tab but not on the Flyer.

The Tab plays my ripped blu-rays (1080/mp4) perfectly fine and smooth! I get an error on the Flyer with the same micro sd card and the same movie files about the file type not being supported.

I am very impressed with the Flyer so far. You need to own one to appreciate just how good HTC made this tablet. You know there is a but coming.....but the lack of Honeycomb and the price is giving me second thoughts. I can pick up the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 for the same price with updated Honeycomb. I know the Flyer may be getting honeycomb and it looks like it may be months away. I like the 7" form factor and portability but with all things considered is it better to just get the Samsung and jump on the Flyers next version? This is tuff..... any ideas?

The 10" form factor feels like a completely different device to me. If your mostly using it for couch surfing, the larger screen is nice. But for portability (or lack of it, compared to the Flyer) is going to feel very different. And while the plastic backing on the Galaxy Tab helps keep the weight down, it also makes it feel less high end than the aluminum unibody on the Flyer.
Good point. The portability is best thing going for the Flyer. I have the iPad2 and have rarely touched it since getting the Flyer. The costs being the same as the Galaxy 10.1 is making it hard for me to justify the expense especially with the Flyer having no Honeycomb. Thinking maybe getting the Galaxy 10.1 and holding out till 8.9 or HTC comes with a refresh of the 7". Still debating.
If you're considering between a 7 and a 10 then you might as well get the 10. Because you should already know if you want the awesome portability of a 7, there is no debate on which is better for carrying it with you. Think bag or no bag, hands full or pocketable.
I prefer the 7" for sure. At this point I am just contemplating wether it makes sense to spend that much for a 7" when you can have a 10" with updated software. I guess I am wondering wether the Flyer is an Over BUY at the price point in comparison to the Tab 10.1 wich fits the price point for its model.
I think 7" is an ideal size. I have a Gtab, iPad 2, and X201Tablet. My wife uses the iPad2, mostly to read online and play some games. My Gtab stays home, usually by my bed to watch movies via Upnplay, probably going to sell it. X201T is really nothing you want to carry around, I usually use that one for Detail sketches or CS5 work. However I carry my Flyer with me everywhere. Great for Train commute and surfing the internet during lunch, Free internet everywhere in NYC. I don't think Honeycomb is really going to make this tablet any better right now. How many apps are actually made for Honeycomb, what some 300+ or so? I know it is a lot of money, but I definitely make the most out of it. I actually do work and research for my work on it. To me it is well worth the price. Only thing I really want is more app for the Scribe pen. If anything HTC should make another variation of the Flyer with no Pen option and sell it for $100 less. If this is a simple case of techolust, I would just get the 10.1 until your next fix come on the market.

This is tuff..... any ideas?

If you like the 7" form factor then why are you going for the 10.1" SGT? In my opinion... the value shouldn't be based solely on the screen size. Judge the product's value as a whole and not just because it's expensive plus it's small since the product in its entirety has a different value proposition.
I read a few different articles regarding the G-Slate with the 8.9" form factor and they say it feels weird given the size... but they said that about the 7" too when it first came out.
I owned a Motorola Xoom for two months. Just returned last week for an HTC Flyer. I like the Flyer a lot better. Don't think because you're getting a dual processor and Honeycomb that the device will run fast. My Xoom was lagging. Many other people have the same experiences. The Flyer has a much more snappier experience. Honeycomb apps are not that much better. Maybe if you play games, the games may look better, but that's pretty much it. 7 inch is the perfect size for a tablet in my opinion. 10.1 inch is just not portable. You'll end up getting a bag to carry it around.
thanks guys I appreciate all your opinions. the truth is that you must consider price when making a purchase. We all do. it's hard to say that you are getting more bang for your buck with a galaxy tab but with a bigger screen, higher processor and thin build it must be considered. It's priced right for the market. You can make a case for the Flyer also but 500 for a smaller screen and older OS is pushing it a bit. Truth is I will probably stick with the flyer. It would suck if HTC decides not to go with honeycomb though. The Flyer has just enough little features that make this thing rock...
10" tabs are pointless imo. A netbook can do more, costs less, is more durable and is just as portable once you factor in the fragility of a tablet.
Stick with the flyer. 7" tab is the perfect size.
The only thing I have to add is the pen integration. As a 2nd gen tab user, I found taking notes on my iPad just didn't work well. If you don't need it then get something else for the money.
Because these devices are meant to be portable case material gets a lot of consideration. Plastic for a device this size just seems flimsy. I don't believe in purchasing a car and leaving it in the garage. I don't baby my electronic devices either. Hence the aluminum is comforting. Titanium or magnesium to lighten things up would be interesting... Maybe a Lenovo will consider the material.
The larger screen is definitely more comfortable if you are primarily couch-surfing. I also prefer the larger screen to browse magazines in full page or side-by-side. The smaller screen of the Flyer works well for guidebooks or as an e-reader. Larger screen also makes remoting into workstations easier, though I'm getting handy with the smaller screen.
Again, to me the pen integration is why I have this particular device. It doesn't bother me that honeycomb isn't on the device... I personally don't expect honeycomb to drastically effect the functionality of the device other than access to apps which will take advantage of the larger screen. I would prefer to see more advancement and focus on pen integrated apps.

Yes, obviously price is a factor for most everyone (except the filthy rich). But it seems like you are trying to compare the "value" for 2 devices with potentially very different functionality due to their form factors.
You said you have an iPad2, which is exactly the same form factor as the GT 10.1. The size and weight of the two are virtually IDENTICAL. Aside from the freedom that the Android OS gives you, what makes you think that you would use the GT any more, or like it any more than the iPad? Plus, you would be owning 2 very similar devices (if you had the GT and the iPad), which actually seems like a waste of money. It seems more value added to spend your money on two devices with different form factors. The Flyer for portability, and maybe the iPad for times when you are couch surfing and want a bigger screen. Although, if you ask me, maybe its the iPad that you should get rid of!
The "value" a device brings to you is not necessarily the specs (like a bigger screen or a slightly more updated OS) but the use that you get from it. Its not always about the numbers, and you can't quantify how much you like or prefer something.
Also, the GT does not have a "higher" processor, in all regards. Its a 1 GHz dual core versus the 1.5 GHz single core on the Flyer. The dual core is better for multi-tasking, such as switching between apps, or apps running in the background. But within a single app, the higher clocked single core processor will actually prove faster. The vast majority of apps do not support multi cores yet, and don't take advantage of it. This is why people on here have commented that the Flyer actually feels snappier than the current dual core tablets (in addition to Honeycomb possibly causing some lag).

I have to agree. While the Flyer is the only tablet I own, I was recently in Best Buy, fiddling around with every tablet they had, particularly the Honeycomb ones. I wasn't really blown away by Honeycomb. Some things are cool, such as how the launcher and other apps make better use of a larger tablet screen. And there are various features only on Honeycomb that sound cool. But to be honest, I was not all that crazy about the general theming and look of Honeycomb versus Sense Gingerbread. Maybe I'm must too much of an HTC junky, and biased. Also, the Honeycomb launcher seemed a bit sluggish, as commented in various places. Maybe HC needs a bit more work, or slightly faster CPUs. All in all, my takeaway from the experience was that I am not really disappointed that the Flyer has Gingerbread.

Exactly! Before I bought my Flyer I was looking for the best hardware, latest OS. After much thought and trying out different devices I decided that I wanted the 7" form factor. With that there were only 2 real choices for me, this and the galaxy tab. The flyer performs much better than the galaxy tab. Reviewers of the flyer complain about the specs, but with actual use, it's fast and smooth, less lag than the 10" honeycombs.
I rarely use my laptop now. When not at work I use this almost exclusively for browsing, email, news, games, listening to music, watching videos, reading android forums =), whether at home or commuting or at a cafe. I'm very happy with the performance. Battery life is decent. My only complaint is the camera that's it. Picture quality on my HTC desire is better than this.

Thanks for all your replies. I decided to stick with the Flyer. The portability can not be beat. I have not really put the pen to use as of yet but I am a big Evernote user and expect to use the Pen much more soon. I miss spoke when I mentioned higher processor, I am aware of the dual core just miss-spoke. The one drawback to the flyer is email threading and right side preview which is available through honeycomb. I am hoping the 7" form factor will adopt these features when Honeycomb is added. The email client for HTC is not my cup of tea. That's is really my biggest gripe.

I couldn't agree more. The value should be based on what's important to YOU! I tried to justify my purchase because I know I overpaid (when comparing to other tablets). Then I realized that it really comes down to whether I like the tablet or not.. and..well... I do
Also, a ton of people pay that same price for only 3.6-4.1 inch screens (phones off contract). So when you look at it that way the price for the flyer is pretty damn good.
Hello there Long time lurker here, usually I don't bother posting unless I can't find the answer anywhere else (and this happens to be that kind of situation), so I'm here asking for help deciding.
Anyway, I'm in the market for a new tablet (strongly prefer a 7 incher, the portability of it is a huge selling point for me). I've had for a few months a COBY 7 inch tablet, and while the form factor is really great, I want something newer, shinier, and better And so I'm stuck choosing between the HTC Flyer and the Acer Iconia A100 (The Viewpad 7x looks nice, but too expensive and the Thrive 7" comes too late for me, I want to order on Black Friday), so if you guys could fill in with your thoughts on the following subjects (would like to hear from owners of both camps), it'd be great to help me decide!
Display quality: Which one has the better picture quality/more responsive? Do I need a screen protector (i.e. no Gorilla Glass)?
Performance: Which performs better in your experience? I'm having the worst time choosing between a faster single core and a slightly slower dual core.
Battery Life: From what I read, the A100 is pretty mediocre here (under 5 hours). But I'd like to hear your thoughts anyway.
Mod-ability: I read that the Flyer has an HC ROM out, but is it rather difficult to install? I'm by no means an extremely advanced user on Android, but I know my way around tech, like to experiment, and with sufficiently detailed instructions I can get by fine.
Although the difference in price is about $20-30 atm, I would also need to get an MHL adapter for the flyer, so for all intents and purposes you can consider the prices to be the same. Which should I choose?

Can't speak to the Acer tablet, but I am a PROUD owner of the US Wifi HTC Flyer.
I've been a member of this site since 2007 lurked, learned, and have become pretty good with the Rooting/Development process. I do it for all of my friends and actually make money from it as well.
Now to your specifics.
I put screen protectors and cases on all of my devices. Just gives me peace of mind seeing as I like to show off the devices and let others test them out. The Flyer has been pretty durable.
The Flyer seems very snappy. I don't do those test that because I know they can be tweeked and skewed. I go off how the device feels when I have about a dozen different apps open, multiple apps running simultaneously.
Not that Juice plotter is terribly accurate, but it shows about 45hrs of battery life. I manage a few weather based businesses. Today it rained and I watched about 3hrs of YouTube videos, a full length movie and the rest was spent browsing the Internet, Facebook'ing, Skyping friends, and using Google Music. When I got home to charge my Flyer I was still at 45% battery life. I'd like to consider myself a power user.
The process of rooting the Flyer was time consuming and about a 5/10 as far as difficulty goes. Had to update some things in the Android SDK to get it to work, got stuck in a bootloop, and confused by a few steps.
However, I got it to work FINALLY. HC is great on the Flyer.
Hope that helps.
I have both A100 and Flyer. The Flyer hands down is the best hardware. Best display , period, faster processor, better build quality, better battery, great internal mic, the stylus is neat if you take notes alot. But.............
The A100 has a solid working HoneyComb out of the box. But Acer has some quality issues and some people including myself have had to return units for replacement for poor wifi range and connectivity. The internal mic on the A100 is garbage to the point of unusable. Bluetooth is output only, no mic, so it;s really lousy for Skype unless you use a wired headset. The display is good / OK if you are looking directly on it and terrible off angle. The Flyer display blows it away.
For the Flyer you get a very usable Gingerbread but to me its ugly and clearly the widgets are for a phone and look ridiculous on a tablet. There is a beta Honeycomb for the Flyer, its not that difficult to install, but its difficult if not impossible to roll back to stock after install (that is being worked and may have a solution in a few days). The beta has significant bugs or short comings for example the camera doesn't work in a lot of apps like Skype.
If HTC would release a fully functional HC ROM, there's no question, take the Flyer any day, but we have no promised date or even assurance that they will ever release such an update, so in my opinion, both are flawed and it depends on your needs and expectations. With either device you have to prepare to live with some quirks or limitations, but in the 7" world, for now these seem to be the top two.
I also had, but sold a Asus Transformer and everything just worked on that device, but I found it just too big to be portable. I travel a lot and love the 7" format.
Processors: Dual core doesn't mean it actually translates to faster processing. Few if any applications are written to take advantage of it and Android doesn't let you have multiple windows open and visible so only one task is foreground for the most part. Therefore a faster single core processor beats the multii-core in almost every real-life situation. I don't see this changing any time soon and the multi-core processors are just a marketing divot right now because everyone thinks they need the next shiny new object. The Flyer has some custom GB ROMs that overclock the processor, while the A100 has no custom ROM at this time.
As far as screen protectors, to me on tablets i think they are totally useless, but I treat my electronics pretty well. I travel a lot and never have an issue. Unless you envision carrying your tablet in your pocket with sharp objects or in a tool bag unprotected, its a waste of money.
Short answer flyer much better I too tried the A100 but to no avail was having same issues with quality hardware so I returned it.

I tried the A100, the screen ruined it for me. Very limited viewing angles. I prefer the Flyer much more. Also, HC 3.2 is not really a plus to me. Gingerbread with Sense is a better user experience overall for me.
I'm a strong believer in the 7" format. Fits in one hand, which comes in handy seeing as we have a 6 month old that always wants to be picked up. I don't think there's anything in the market that competes with the HTC Flyer. I've had mine for 3 months now, & have had a ball. I'm running the standard Gingerbread ROM, because I've been waiting for ICS. That promises to have more functions for the stylus. Don't bother with a cover, unless you don't want to use a pouch or carrier. Its construction is very durable. The display is also good. Have watched a few movies & shows on it, including Transformers 3 & Top Gear. To the point where I don't even bother with my laptop, when I want to watch something. The headset sound is also very good. In closing, until the second gen Samsung Galaxys come out, the HTC is the choice in the 7" market.
Lurking and really considering the flyer. Especially after best buy dropped their pants. Definetly not new to android, new to tablets. Only thing kinda holding me back is what appears to be a general lack of development on the device. Guess I was spoiled with my captivate. Still the stock software appears real solid
you'll find the same lack of development on all current tablets. Google never released the source code for honeycomb so there is no way to develop custom ROMs. All you can do is take existing ROMs and add or subtract system apps and a few properties. That should change if and when Google releases source code for Ice Cream Sand. They have promised but are holding it back until the new Nexus hits the shelves sometime in Nov. If the source is released , I expect we will see a jump in development and hopefully a CM9 rom but that will take a few months. In the mean time we hope HTC blesses us with a fully functional HC rom.
Thank you for the response, makes sense
Htc Flyer better bro
I can get £100 for my 16Gb wifi which makes the upgrade price to a nexus 7 8Gb only £65 in the UK.
For this I get ICS, quad core, IPS screen. But lose 8Gb and pen.
Is it worth it ?
I've been debating the same decision too, and with a PSP and zune lying around that I'm not using I might be able to accomplish it, but for some reason I just don't wanna part with this device. I'm torn honestly. I keep thinking why decide flyer or nexus when come christmas time I'll get my usual Christmas cash and I can have both
I guess its just I was eager to upgrade my phone and I sold ny captivate to pay for my HTC Vivid and now I regret it and miss the phone. No complaints with the Vivid but just regret missing out on some of the best development for it. And HTC has left it for dead but our developers are really breaking ground on it. Chaoses new ics Rom will be a beast after everything is working and ioiwillio really is putting together an awesome honeycomb Rom. So I do want the new nexus but at the same time I don't know if I'm ready to sacrifice my flyer to get one

Don't forget drew garen
I know one issue I have in parting with the flyer is quality and design vs a modern budget tablet. A year ago the flyer was a premium android tablet and one thing that threw me for a loop in a nexus was a review that said the speaker was really nice...emphasis on speaker not "speakers" like the flyer has. Pros and cons of the idea
Pros:
*more modern hardware
*lagfree
*Completely up to date
*software is handled by Google so no laggy sense ui and timely updates
Cons
*No pen support
*mono speaker
*build quality is good but HTC has the best
*No expandable Storage
*Front camera is in the wrong place
*No rear camera
*jelly beans 7 inch tablet ui is rubbish

I think I could part with my flyer now in favor of one, or I could wait and have both! What's better than an android tablet? 2 android tablets!

No pen support is what keeps me from buying any other device.
But if you don't use the pen, then yeah...I can see the upgrade being worth it.
Yeah nothing on the nexus tab is a deal breaker for me, I just am hesitant to give up the flyer so quickly not to mention I doubt I could get that much money out of it anyway

I did just that.
I preordered the Nexus 7 16GB from Google and put my HTC Flyer, Blurex case, installed Zagg invisible shield, box, cables, and all papers one up on ebay.
If anyone is interested, it's up on ebay for $159 and BUY IT NOW $187 for all.
BTW Thanks for all in this forum who have helped me with various things along the way.
Peace,
Jeff
I did the same! I listed my Flyer late Wednesday night on Gumtree and someone took it off me for £150 at half four yesterday Very quick sale!
I couldn't care about the camera, microsd slot and pen.. I never really used them! So ordered the Nexus 8GB just, Was going to go for the 16GB but I only used ~2.5gb on my Flyer.
Can't wait for them to ship!
I'm with you there on that stuff doesn't matter. I have an sd card in mine only because I got sick of having to take my phone apart every time I wanted to flash a Rom through recovery. All my media is on the cloud. And the camera really is just a toy imo, there is no useful purpose for one on a tablet, and besides my HTC Vivid has a much nicer camera anyway, 8mp dual led flash. Really what's killing the nexus tab for me is the terrible jelly bean UI. I just found out today no landscape mode, wtf? I mean yes in apps and games, but the homescreen is portrait only like a phone! So that mean all next gen 7 inch android tablets are just going to be glorified e readers? I personally rarely ever use portrait, god google is clueless

Haha! I prefer portrait mode actually! Plus, The phone UI is nicer on a 7 inch tablet.. I had an Archos 80 G9 before my Flyer and the tablet UI was nice and spaced out - On the Flyer it felt really cramped! Wish Google would release the case in the UK soon! Going to need one :L
I'd still buy one, and I still plan too actually, not a matter of if but when. Just don't see why its so hard to put the launcher in landscape auto rotate when 3rd party launchers have been doing this for years! I'll definitely be putting a custom launcher on mine

You guys will have to keep me informed how you like it. I will say the rubberized back is a plus. The flyer is slippery. I've had it slide out of my hands a million times.
After watching a review of the nexus tab on youtube, yeah its hard to complain about the UI too much, beause it looks gorgeous and moves like "butter", even if it isn't exactly the most tablet optimized UI. I wonder what its going to do to other cheap tabs now such as the Nook Tablet, Kindle Fire, and GTab2. The GTab2 seemed like a steal at $250 2 months ago, but now it seems way over priced considering the same price gets you 2 more cores, a more up to date version of android, double the storage, and an HD screen. Google has set the standard now for cheap tabs. Look for an Apple lawsuit soon lol.
The storage is a no go for me
Flyer
Haha! Do you know if the stock ICS launcher on phones rotates? I know from the G9 the Tablet one definitely rotates, Just not used ICS on my phones properly
Ugh I hate the Flyer's aluminium build so much! I can't stand the soft feeling when it moves in your hand haha! Had the leather hardback on from day one then switched to the leather journal case for when I took the tablet outside and a gel case for indoors haha. The official leather journal is well overpriced, Wish I had've bought an unofficial one with a stand!
Can't wait until they start to ship! Mines coming from Dublin, Ireland which is only ~130 miles from where I live so it won't take long to arrive!
Really odd how the case isn't available in the UK yet though -

It doesn't auto rotate, its pretty much the Galaxy Nexus Launcher with a larger grid. But oh well really, its android, and as people have said in other threads, who uses the stock launcher anyway? Nothing Apex or Nova can't fix
I always questioned the rear camera on tablets. I mean first of all its pointless, even a 7 inch tab is much to large to carry around as your digital camera, and the cameras they put on them are smartphone cameras anyway so its not something you want to carry around if your a serious photographer, and secondly its the most blatently obvious thing to get rid of when trying to bring the price down on a tablet! I mostly use my flyer's camera to irritate my wife, lol I have a sectional couch and I sit on the loveseat portion, and she sits on the couch, and I like to sneak and take picture of her to irritate her. She hears the camera sound and gets annoyed. And yep thats really what a camera is on a tab, just a toy.
Aw, Not a big deal anyway! Hey - I use the stock launcher on most devices LOL.
Yeah I never saw the point of the rear camera on the Flyer.. Used it once or twice, More a gimmick. Same can be said for the front facing camera! I used it twice, and it was to test Snapbooth, Nothing else! I don't video call or Skype so it's of no use to me!
With any luck the Nexus' screen is easier to see in sunlight than the Flyers' .. I couldn't see anything with the screen on 100%! I'm looking forward to the higher res screen.. The Flyer looks really pixelated when I look at my phone for long periods of time, And my phone isn't even that high res, 480*800 4" haha!
I'm really thinking about it now lol. My biggest complaint with honeycomb is the lag and i hate gingerbread because of ugly phone versions of gmail, YouTube, maps, gvoice, etc. My roommate's gtab2 is quick and responsive except for the ui which is kind of laggy. You don't get the honeycomb look with the nexus but you still get honeycomb style apps, and to some extent honeycomb is more made for larger tablets as those virtual keys are easy to bump when your playing games etc. I'm going to sleep on it. i might call up the used video game store and see how much they'd pay for a flyer, as i kinda wanna sell quick if i do it
