For all the Devs in the ASGS2 forum, are you guys finding your rom/kernel threads being clogged up with a bunch of random questions/issues? How would you feel if I made you all each a Q&A thread dedicated to your work in the Q&A forum? Do you feel that would help you/your thread? Please let me know what you think or how you feel, and hit up the poll to cast your vote.
This was done in the Cappy section because they had a minimum post restriction to keep the spoon feeding clutter down in the Dev section. Not sure if that restriction is also in this section. It was only like 10 post minimum though.
I tried to do this manually with Hellraiser, but it hasn't really taken off. To be honest, right now the I777 community isn't the epic cesspool that some other forums are. However over time this could change... But the kinds of users that clutter development threads are the kind who don't bother to go to Q&A threads - so does it really help anything?
we did this over in captivate forums, it worked well.
we did this over in inspire forums, it was met with serious backlash by lazy ass people, and ignorance to change.
tough decision. Entropy has a point, those people wouldnt bother going to a Q&A thread...the Q&A threads should be a place where the users help each other out and raise issues. the dev threads should be there to report ACTUAL issues and request features. what happens is that one person has a problem with flashing the rom and they assume its the devs fault, and the rom is broken, and they report it as a bug....its a vicious cycle that will never end.
Well this forum is for you guys, so if you dont think its needed then I wont worry about it... just trying to help all the great devs out and make things easier if I can.
If you guys have any other suggestions or want to try something out, feel free to say.

im no developer but ive been around the forums and have come from a forum with less of a following. the problem is that the people who are asking the question's in the threads are 60-70% of the time dont read directions and will end up posting in the wrong forum anyways.... its a novel idea but i dont think it will take off, unless you lock the rom forum to devs and testers only

That sort of defeats the purpose I think, and I also believe that most Devs here like to have people post in their threads.
Alright guys. Ill keep it the way it already is. If your threads seem to get clogged, or you want your own dedicated Q&A thread, let me know and Ill make the adjustment at that time. Thanks for all your feedback.
I would appreciate it, so far most of the users in this forum are above average when it comes to figuring things out own their own (searching). Only thing is I wish there was more ROM choices/themes.
I don't feel the need for a Q&A thread right now. I find it a bit tedious to follow two threads for my ROMs instead of one. Also, I don't really mind a few redundant questions here and there as long as it doesn't get out of hand, which it hasn't yet.

Not a dev, but I do post quite often in both the dev and QA sections. I don't think there should be two threads. It seems it is more effective if there is only one thread dedicated to that rom/modem/kernel, with all bugs and support given out. Of course if you have a more complex issue, it should have it's own thread. But small issues with the rom or questions regarding how something works should be contained in the same thread as the development of the rom.

i agree with this, but there tends to be an influx of people posting the same CRAP over and over and over and over in a dev thread. personally i dont give 2 flips about someone saying "THANKS!" or "CANT WAIT TO FLASH THIS!" or "WHEN IS THE NEXT UPDATE?!", i want to see CONSTRUCTIVE criticisms, requests, or logcats. having to filter through all the BS really makes it difficult to discern actual issues from fluff. there tends to be a lot of fluff that happens.
i see the dev threads as being specifically for requests/bug-tracking/break-fixes. the other stuff belongs in a thread where the users can praise, bicker, ask questions repeatedly (how do i flash this?). it should be peers helping out peers, and let the devs work on their stuff. but alas, we will never have utopian bliss....
we are lucky we havent seen much of that at all here in the GS2 forums, but man some of the other forums are riddled with noobery. lets just try to keep it clean and ask our members to mind the rules and understand whats going on.
Yeah... I think as long as things don't become like the Infuse forums where some of the ROM threads became utter nightmares we'll be fine. But let's keep it in our back pocket in case we need it. I may even discontinue my Hellraiser Q&A for the time being.
If there's anything we may need, it may potentially be to split the development forum like the I9100 forums were in order to differentiate ports of other developer's ROMs from actual development. It isn't too bad here yet, but the Infuse forums are chock full of integrated Hellraiser ports and it's difficult to find original development among all of the ports.
I think the definitions for "Original" vs "not original" in the I9100 forums seem to be a bit arbitrary, if we DO ever go that route here I think it needs to be clearer.
"Original" - You yourself have taken a stock ROM (may be stock for another device) and modified it from scratch on the I777. All kernel development can remain here in my opinion. Discussion of actual porting techniques used by the other section can be here.
"Not original" - Another dev creates a ROM for another device, and an I777 user ports it to the I777 via Hellraiser or another technique. e.g. Hellraiser-integrated ROMs and such.
We don't need this yet here but we may - and honestly the Infuse forums need it.

I did this in the forums that PG mentioned. While yes it was a bit of a headache in the inspire forums ( they are getting used to it) and the captivate section went off without an issue I would say to go for it and if needed ill help where I can. I have to admite the 2 forums that I did this for once it was gotten by most needs less cleaning now for sure. Mainly when other users back you on it.
Personally I think it would be really helpful if individual posts could be categorized and/or sorted within a thread. That way all posts relating to a specific rom/development topic could remain in the same thread, but you could then filter out the garbage, sort through the questions, and find posts that are truly relevant to the topic or project or whatever. It would still depend on the users to label posts properly, but I think we're all in agreement that there is no perfect solution to the issue.

I'm not a Dev myself but I do feel two threads isn't an ideal solution... Most ignorant people who can't find an answer in five second's or just don't feel like even trying to search will always head to the source of their ROM issues. Now if the method 10tonhammer described seems like an okay idea as long as any average person takes the task upon themselves to tag their post properly. Either way I'm not exactly the prime example of good manners on XDA (Feel's Guilty)
I am learning at least <3
Lastly Thank you to all Dev's and Mod's who make this the most pleasant interaction between Developer and User possible.
Over the past month, Divine_Madcat and myself have seen a steady increase of new users join our forums. While this is a good thing, they all seem to suffer from the same thing... they cant read.
D_M and myself are constantly tending to reported posts (thank you BTW for those of you that do report posts to grab our attention to something that needs attending to) and threads. We seem to accumulate a lot of new threads which are basically questions like "How do I root my phone" or "I flashed 4.0.3 and now I cant make phone calls" or "How do I flash back to Stock?" which could have all been answers if two minutes were taken to look at the sticky threads...
We are in the process of trying to remedy this and have a few ideas up our sleeves. When more develops on this, we will let all of you know.
Speaking of Sticky threads, those are about to get a facelift too. Instead of having a huge plethora of sticky threads, we only need a few. Expect some new sticky threads to go up that encompasses the same information that is already there... it will now just be easier to see, refer to and be in one place.

Good to hear, I always thought we had way too many stickies that just confuses people.
I think there should be a test to verify that you can read and use the search function before you are allowed to post. And a probationary period where if a mod catches you asking a stupid question, you get sent back to the tutorial.
Though to be accurate, like my old sergeant used to say, "There are no stupid questions, only stupid people who ask questions".

LOL....i love this.
we have a quote on our wall at the office:
'You can't fix stupid'
It would be great if new users couldn't post for a month. They would then be forced to search for the answers they need.
As I said, we have a few options we are throwing around... determining on which ones are actually possible and can be done on XDA is still being planned out. However, something should come out of it that will help with this issue.
Yeah, the idiots that CAN'T EVEN READ THE DAMN STICKIES and then whine about why they were attacked for NOT READING THE DAMN STICKIES are frustrating.
There is, across the Internet, at least one piece of forum etiquette that is almost universal:
READ ALL STICKY THREADS BEFORE POSTING. Why can't users learn this?

I demand retribution for commonly asked questions. I say when someone asks for something that's searchable, give them a CWM flashable zip that changes all of their app's icons to 100% transparent and removes the app names under the icon. That'll show 'em!
I like to suggest making the stickies stand out more. Right now the only difference is the little pushpin, which I admit I miss sometimes myself. Yes they are at the top, but it always looks likes there's a ton of them.
Some grouping box around them that says "STICKIES!! - READ THESE BEFORE POSTING ANYTHING!"
Highlight them a different color or something even.
Granted, that probably requires forum coding, which I don't know if mods can do (not skill, just accessibility).
Just my opinion. Take it for what it's worth.
This is no different than the sign on a storefront that says "please use other door"... about half of the people will invariably try to walk in the locked / faulty door anyway.
I've seen this same thing on literally every forum I've ever been a part of so I for one look forward to seeing what the "powers that be" come up with to eliminate or at least minimize stupidity and redundancy once and for all.

I'm probably the only person in my gang that has never actually seen the vid. Everyone tried to get my to watch it, told me how gross it was, and I was like "why the frack would I want to watch it then?". To me, it's kinda like, "I think this milk is spoiled, taste this". Uhm, no thank you, I'll take your word for it.
A few things to consider -for a tough problem -
Moderators spend more time enforcing accurate post subjects. "Help Me" "I have a question" etc.
Close the stickies when they become redundant, off topic, or terminally "thanks", "that worked" etc.
A newcomer's forum. Those who want to help bring up the novices can check into this forum along with the newcomers helping each other out. Moderators can move posts that should be in this forum from forums where they don't belong. This could the "one month quarantine" forum for new registrants. Moderators could move posts to appropriate forums if the feel topic has wider appeal
A user moderation system like slashdot. slashdot isn't a question forum, but the user moderation system could be used for browsing over unwelcome posts tagged as newcomer, duplicate, etc
A forum that welcomes everyone and belittling of anyone for any reason isn't tolerated: hometheatershack. You will see newcomer questions handled only by those who really want to help; some members gently encourage newcomers to be more resourceful. The forum rules strongly encourage everyone to search around first. You will see the grizzled titan patiently answering the dumbass questions for the umpteeth time. Others obviously pass over them silently.
A middle ground like diyaudio, a forum populated by the world leaders in audio electronics. There is the occasional frustration at the newcomer but most just pass over or pitch in and keep teaching.
It is a tough issue. Just a few ideas from a long time forum user and newcomer to phone hacking. I've learned a lot from xda. Thanks!

I must admit I am guilty of this. The problem I have is while using the xda premium app , the search tool doesn't seem to let me search a specific forum , it searches all of xda. It is quite possible i am missing something but maybe this is something that can be changed in the app. Entorpy thanks for all your DD work, GTG thank you for unnammed , red and m.c. ty for being decent and understanding mods , and of course miami thanks for the criticism.
I was just scolded by Red5 for posting a new thread. I can't post in the Development forum, as I don't have enough posts yet. I DID search for the answer, and when I couldn't find I did as the message below told me to do. Post the question in the Q&A forum.
I'm not a moron, or a troll, I'm an experienced IT professional with a simple question. New members are going to have more questions than answers when getting started in this forum. Rules that block people from putting comments where they belong, then scolding people for putting them where they're told to (see below) just doesn't make much sense.
Please Read: New members (those with fewer than 10 posts) are not permitted to post to development-related forums. The developer forums are intended for experienced users and developers to discuss ways to improve technical aspects related to ROMs and Software. While you may be an expert, we ask ALL users to avoid posting questions about using or installing ROMs and software in the Development Forums. To encourage this new Users can read but not post in these forums.
To ask Questions about developing your device, installing ROMs, software and themes you must go to the Q&A or General Forum.
What question do you have. Also if you read, the development forum is only for development, not asking questions.
You have no idea how many new members go in and ask questions that have been asked millions of times before or in the sticky that has BIG BOLD LETTERS ON THE TOP SAYING READ ME. And also 90% sure this thread will be locked anyways since it has nothing to do with the phones.
Oh to answer your question.
Since its an App, you're not going to find help on the black text because thats just the way the app is coded. Go complain to the developer of the app and not the ROM.
And by recovery console do you mean cwm? If so, have fun.

Sorry, that's a rough intro. I hope you won't be turned off by XDA as a whole. I try to keep things positive and look forward to seeing you around these boards.
EDIT, as to your questions, briefly in case this thread gets closed:
1) No easy way to change font/color behavior in a single app. As a workaround, you can hold finger over a list entry/item and read the text sometimes while it is highlighted. Some apps have theme settings for dark/light themes for exactly this situation.
2) I know modifying recovery is possible (Siyah kernel for instance) but have never seen one with larger fonts. At any rate, it's not a setting that can be changed on the fly.
I think they mean for questions like "how do i flash a rom" , "how do i return to stock" , general non rom specific questions. Any specific rom questions need to go in that dev's thread. As far as needing ten posts, find some threads that interest you in the general or q & a and comment on them.

I'm pretty sure none of us are... But this is the rule for XDA that was set forth... 10 post is not a lot, especially comparing to some of the other sites that I seen out there. As of now you have 7 posts. Only 3 more posts and you should be good to go.
Keep it in mind the moderators/administrators here work hard to keep this forums nice and clean. So, new users can find things easier.
As some of the earlier posts and responses, they should already tell you what you can and cannot do.
As penguinlogik said, I would stay away from CWM. Or you will definately have a field day with it, that is from my experience.
Wait was that in the Q&A section that it was asked?
Anyways to answer your question;
The app was made for an unthemed version of the rom. When we theme stuff in the framework often times it directly effects some apps. Apps that are using framework colors anyways.
The only way to fix the app is to mod the app yourself or use a unthemed rom.
Theming is a tough job as it cant usually be done without effecting something else (app) unfortunately.
Hope that helps...
Thank you shoman, that was the first useful reply to my original question.

I think you need to understand where XDA came from. It was never meant as a place for the masses to come and gather. It was meant for developers to come and share knowledge to make their phones better. What you see now is what happens when you do it EXTREMELY WELL. It is EXPECTED OF YOU to read, read, and read some more before you ask questions. Yes that may take minutes, hours or even days, but that's what you have to do.

I said NOT TO START A NEW THREAD ABOUT IT. Thats why it was closed. If you consider that scolding, then you're in a rude awakening from other members here at XDA.
The reason we put up the 10 post minimum was because 99.9% of all questions are either answered in the sticky threads, guides, walkthroughs, FAQ or threads already started... you just have to look. As previously stated by another member, by learning to search when you first register, it set a precident for the remainder of your stay on how to act and what to do on this forum.
This is a Development site for Developers... its not a phone version of WalMart where people pop in to start a thread or just order what they want. If you want answers, just like the internet itself, you're going to have to search... and this same answer can be found in the sticky at the top of this forum.

Hey,
So I have been a regular visitor to this site for about 2 years now ever since I first rooted my HTC desire.
I have downloaded and tested many custom ROM's for the desire and the SGS2.
My recent favorite ROM is resurrection remix which i have been using various builds of since xmas. And only now do I have a question that no one has asked and I cant find an answer to.
Of course since I have never needed to post before when I tried to ask my question it wont let me because i have not made 10 useful comments. The only place I find useful comments is on the development forums. There is nothing specifically that I need from the other ares of the site and so I cannot offer any feedback that would be helpful to others there... the only place I can make useful comments is on the development forums, which is exactly where Im not allowed to make them.
So how does one get around that?

Probably not, but you can try contacting a moderator, the rule is there to avoid people joining and spamming the dev section with crap, if that isnt your plan they may be able to help you out.

Do what I did and make yourself useful by answering others questions. You'll be surprised how much you actually know

I'm in the same boat bud. Hopefully we will get one day to ask questions in the normal thread. Can't wait.

Personally and apart from the spam issue the ten post thread in dev section is far to low a number one only has to read the inane posts from users with more than ten posts in many dev threads .
But how do you overcome the problem of a large amount of idiots posting who cannot be bothered to read the rules read the faqs or instructions and repetitively ask the same questions .it reflects badly on those who like the OP have taken time to read and learn as they are treated the same .
jje
That rule also stopped me in my tracks. But I can see the point on the development forums.
After the "no you can't" it encouraged me to look harder for answers and ask the (dum) questions on the general forum.
I realize the point is to avoid opening new threads for questions that might be better served in the appropriate development thread, but if you've searched and haven't found your answer I'm sure it wouldn't be a problem to post one in Q&A or General, but make sure you exhausted all search options before you do.
Same for me...To be honest I wanted to answer questions and help members, not to ask myself but... I see the point of the rule, there are too many people that will ask (dum) Q without even bothering to use the search tool and filling the threads with crap when there is no need to...
Solution:
make thread about it.
Answer all who replys
Profit

Also have same problem, I just posted a question here that I feel would be better suited to go in the Dev thread of the ROM I use.

Unfortunately, there will be some people (a minority) affected by this rule who probably shouldn't be (those who wouldn't post crap to dev threads from the get go), but at the end of the day it goes some way to reducing the mountains of crap which get posted to dev threads every day (at least 75% of posts in my experience. I'm probably being generous).
Again unfortunately (for the people who would do the right thing if this rule wasn't in place), no system is perfect in this regard. Frankly, I'd rather have the current system in place as opposed to making things open slather. Changing the current rule would make an already bad situation even worse IMHO.
Edit to add - As was suggested on the first page of this thread, you can always plead your case to a mod if you think the rule shouldn't apply to you for whatever reason.
Further edit - Poster above me. Your recent post in Q&A is a prime example of the type of post which should not be cluttering a dev thread. It is a general question, and not specific to a particular rom.

A great example of the mountains of crap that spew out of many of the users (if you look in there I'm sure I'm guilty too) in this forum, check out the CM9 discussion thread, imagine if that was in the dev thread, how would codeworkx and the others ever find anything that might be relevant?
Find 10 noobs to help in Q&A section, help said noobs, done.
It's not just about taking.

This is true too, when I started I felt handcuffed by the 10 post limit, but I spent a little time reading posts and using the knowledge I gained to help out others and my post (and thanks) count quickly increased well beyond the limit. Helping others also gave me more understanding to be able to troubleshoot my own problems.
Yep that's exactly right Thracemerin, a perfect example.
I dread getting home from work & having to scroll thru 18 hrs worth/sometimes up to 40 pages of posts in the CM9 discussion thread & 90% of them are utter crap.
You're right, if it were in the dev thread, I think Codeworkx, Xplodwild et al would have given up ages ago.

Apologies I stand corrected, I thought it would be ROM related as the only info I could find through search was about adding poweron.ogg to system/etc and making sure permissions are set correctly and this is not working for me.

Fair points
I can see the point to it cutting down a number of people who would make useless comments, although the development forums are still littered with idiots who type before they think or even look around for a solution.
OK I'm off to trawl the forums to see who I can help!

In the stickies on this forum is help for rebooting prooblems and so you think you've bricked your phone. Yet there constantly appears postings about phone rebooting and Please Help I've Bricked My Phone, and by far most of these it is the poster's first posting.
Maybe the rule should be that you cannot start a new thread, in any forum, until you have 10 posts. Every forum has a FAQ thread that they can post on if they have searched on here and can't find anything.
I know many may disagree. But I need to get this off of my chest. I get tired of people that don't want to help or or are just rude about giving advice. I thought forums were supposed to be a community of people that are here to help each other, not belittle them.
I understand that some questions are obvious and sometimes people don't do enough research before asking questions. But here is my opinion: if you don't want to give an answer other than the typical "do you know what Google is?" Or the ever present rude comments then keep it to yourself.
The whole idea of how a person can be rude on the internet without any sort of consequence because they are sitting behind a computer or a phone or what have you is disgusting to say the least.
The concept of being kind to each other is nearly gone in this world...

It has a lot to do with placing a tremendous amount of value in something that really doesn't mean anything all, one's ego. If some people got over themselves and spent the same amount of energy to help as they did to be snotty and cocky, this would be a much better community to learn together. Instead some would rather hold on to their knowledge as they think it elevates them. Get over yourself and contribute. This is a community, not a place of worship.
Thank you for taking the time to create this thread.

Also these ppl fail to realize is that even tho the question has already been answer it makes easier for noobies to find the answer without sifting through 500 pages.

This doesn't belong here.
This section is for General topics concerning the device itself, there is an actual xda General section to post general topics concerning all of xda.
this is a development site first and foremost, not a help desk, you're perfectly ok to post your questions in the q&a section, and most roms should have an accompanying q&a thread so as not to have the same questions come up making reading the thread to see what DEVELOPMENTS have occurred get buried in a mess. If that were adhered to more it would go smoother.
Furthermore there has been a depressing shift in the user attitude as of late that is kinda burning us old timers out.
Instead of working with devs and getting a nice feedback, a vast majority is demanding and entitled.
Like the post a couple above me
...You know the answer just answer me, otherwise shut up...
Whereas it should be
"You've worked hard let me put forth a bit of effort so you can have some spare time"
TL;DR
you say they are rude for telling you to search.
Whereas you're being rude by not searching.

Ah, the old prickly problem of internet ego. I can say anything that I want because I sit behind this keyboard and am not face-to-face with the actual person. I love you!!, I hate you!! You are a genius. So stupid, smh. So easy to type these things. Very few have the cojones to say these things to someone's face. Hence the dawn of the e-peen.
Sorry to say that it is here to stay. I believe it first showed its head shortly after Al Gore invented the internet. In fact I think that his e-peen was the one that first broke through because, well he invented it.
When I first came to XDA, I knew very little about Android. I knew what Root was and that was about it. So I read and read a bit more. The phone I had was released and abandoned on Éclair (no app2sd), a locked bootloader (wtf was a bootloader) and only had 256 RAM and 512 ROM. Not a lot of space. So we had to repartition our extSD card to create a partition to where the apps could install. That meant learning how to partition/format an SD card, learning the scripts to run it and then the actual install with terminal. It took time. Fortunately there was a few people in that forum that helped as much as they could. No one was spoonfeeding but rather spurring a possible future dev. Plus they we just being nice.
Fast forward 2+years. Android has gone from a niche market (Donut/Éclair) to a superpower in the market (GB/ICS/JB). Everyone knows someone who has an Android. Before this boom, it was all about Nokia, HTC and Blackberry, none of which used Android as a platform.
With fame come the masses. Like I said above, everyone knows someone with an Android device. Teenagers, business people, grandparents,...heck I've taught my two young sons how to root their Nook Colors and they are in K & 1st grade. Guess what site is almost alwasy at the top of any Android Google search? ---> XDA-Developers.
The best thing that I can tell you is that if you can help, then please do in one of two short posts. Anything beyond that, then they need to do more research and reading. It doesn't cost anything to answer, but if someone responds with a snarky remark and then it escalates, well that could cost you your privileges of being able to post here via infractions and bans for flaming. No one wants that. Steer the questions to the Q&A section and out of the Dev section(s). The Q&A sections is a "dumping ground" so to say. It was created to relieve the non-development posts in dev threads. It works, if use correctly.
Searching is Rule #1 but there is also Rule #2 about being Courteous and Flaming. Just because they are #2 doesn't make them any less important.
tl;dr Answer if you can in 1 or 2 posts. If not, then direct to Q&A. No flames but try to be nice about how you respond.
Didn't mean for this to be so long but I see this thread at least 10 times a week.

Oooh wait, I forgot something. One way that you can help people that are actually using the Search function is to put thread tags at the bottom of the threads. That way when someone searches, maybe that thread or issue will pop up. I just checked the Dev section (not OrgDev) and in the top 10 threads in there, not a single one has any Tags in it. Could be useful to put some in there, don't you think? Fixed a problem with GPS, then put a tag in there like "GPS fix on pg 152". BT now works, put a tag in there that "BT is working on this ROM".
Al Gore didn't invented the internet? And Woody Sir...I love You!:silly::silly:
