At this point, yes - all smartphones (i.e., Android, Blackberry, WebOS, iPhone, and WP7, if they have any of those) on Verizon require the $30 unlimited plan. There is a rumor that Verizon will introduce capped plans this summer and remove the unlimited option, but that is still just a rumor.

You must get the 30 dollar plan unfortunately

I thought you could use the phone without any data, but when you renew, they make you get the data package.

You cannot activate a smartphone on Verizon without the unlimited data plan. Even if you have a contract already, once you try to activate the phone you will be required to add the data plan.
I suppose you could use the phone to dial 911...

Required Data Plan??

Hey guys I just bout my Atrix the other day off contract and I got this text.... AT&T Free Msg: Did you know an eligible data plan is required for your 4G Smartphone? Pls call 611 to select a plan and establish your 4G data connection today and I have the unlimited data plan from forever ago. Am I safe?

I get the message once a week, as well as an email. It happens when you still have the unlimited plan. They can't make you change your plan. I would not worry.

I never got that with my captivate I'm getting it now because this phone has higher data speeds

I've read that they send you those messages and then they change your plan to data if you call them but if you don't they just keep sending you the message without doing actually changing your plan.
But I don't actually have AT&T so I'm just talking from word of mouth(or keyboard if you will...)

So if you call that number by mistake then they change it automatically or do you have to confirm it with them?

they probably want to switch you to the 4g plan, which has an unlimited data option for those grandfathered in.

Is this any better then my current unlimited plan? And are you sure they wouldn't try and swindle me and get rid of my unlimited plan

I had iPhone 3GS before and was grandfathered in. Wife was also grandfathered in. All you should have to do is tell them you do not want to lose your unlimited plan, and want to be grandfathered in and you should be set.
If you are unsure, call an AT&T store and ask them without giving your information. Also, make sure you go into a store to have the changes done. When I bought my phone they automatically put me on the 2GB plan and I spent 2 hours trying to get unlimited back, which I got after a manager authorized it.

with the 4g plan, it allows you to use the phone apn instead of just wap.cingular. using the phone apn, i get speeds of over 7mbps sometimes. using the wap one, i max out at 3.9 where i live. that's the only difference. they activate that apn for you

Call AT&T and ask. I would think so though, but you need to purchase a data plan I think. It's $25 for 1GB per month. The other data plans offered are too small to be of any use.

You could use it on Straight Talk for $45 a month with unlimited everything

If waiting for root to get WiFi tethering

You don't really have to unless you are grandfathered in for unlimited data... VZW shared everything, includes the hotspot feature and you don't have to have 2 devices... I switched my plan to it and I'm actually saving $10+ more a month... Just a thought.. and in case others didn't know

I've been considering mentioning it. Because of the spectrum that Verizon bought, they cannot "double dip" into our pockets and are not allowed to charge twice for the same data, thus we're allowed to tether. This does not apply to unlimited because the data you use on unlimited is dictated by usage rather than by purchasing a set amount of data per month.

That's true, the thing I meant about unlimited was that if they switched to this they wouldn't have it anymore. And instead of tacking on $30 extra to there bill for the hotspot that the root for wifi is better for them.. but if a person doesn't have unlimited, this plan would be one to think about

I was just explaining why tethering is free for share everything users, and how it differs for unlimited. Personally I can live without unlimited without a problem so i'm looking forward to the free tethering without root or any exploit.

I was about to convert my unlimited data plan to a 6GB plan since I only use 4.2 on average and thats without the tons of reliable wifi hotspots I have around me. But then I realized this phone kicks at 1080p, so things like youtube/netflix streams are going to be coming in at higher bitrates. I'll also probably use the phone more than my thunderbolt for general web-surfing since it look so much better. Basically, this phone is going to kick up my consumption levels several factors. 6GB is barely enough for my thunderbolt, I have a feeling I'm going to break the bank with the DNA. So I paid full retail just to keep unlimited.

Nice. Yea I heard about that too. VZW is doing away with unlimited completely. The only way to keep it is if you buy all phone from now on at full retail prices. If you use the upgrade you don't get to keep your unlimited

Data

Looks like Verizon finally took my prepaid unlimited data away. Would use the 1 gb they gave me but if your rooted and use an app for tethering it appears to be the only work around. Just their way of trying to suck the money from us poor folks.
Sent from my MB870 using xda app-developers app
Can you be more specific? What did you do to loose unlimited?
^^ Right because they can't just take it away out of nowhere. Did you upgrade or change your plan in anyway?
Were you on a contract? If not, taking it away abruptly could be well within Verzon's rights (sadly). Between payment times they could just be like "well, we're done with this tough ****". I truly hate that. Not a lick of obligation to the customer on their part.
Nope. I paid for the X2 straight out for prepaid and I haven't changed anything to my plan. Instead of unlimited data now I get 1gb.
Sent from my MB870 using xda app-developers app
Maybe it just depends on the phone you traded for. A prepaid phone, I believe, wouldn't get the unlimited data plan. I could be wrong though.
I'm not really sure what the prepaid plans offer.
If you previously had unlimited data and made no changes to your plan, they will allow you to keep you current plan and be "grandfathered in."
Throwing the word "prepaid" into the equasion makes me wonder if there is more to it.
I took a phone, not on my line or belonging to me, and had it activated on my account. I still have my unlimited data. The phone was actually an upgraded phone from my wife's account. She took my X2 and I took the Gnex.
If you changed your plan in any way, that will definietly cause you to loose your unlimited data.
I haven't change anything since I bought the phone last year. Same plan and all.

Unlimited data

OK so my question is if I add a line to my plan does this count as a change of contract and I lose unlimited data?

When you add the line and you take one of their phones at the discounted price it will force you to lose the unlimited. If you pay full retail on the new phone you then can ask to keep your unlimited.
Would I be able to use a phone I already had?

Odd, I was told I could add a line and keep my data, but my wife would be on one of the older tiered data packages...
They said I could get a new phone too and it wouldn't effect my data. Go in to your local store and find out.

Be wary of following advice from the stores that's all I have to say about that. If you currently just have a single line plan and turn it into a family plan they will give you one of the new share everything plans. Unless you're currently on one of the older family plans and you're under 5 lines I believe you could add one and retain the unlimited data on your line. It would just add another montly access charge 9.99 + cost of data plan and other features.
The last time I talked to a CSR they told me that if I change anything that my plan changes. I asked to add tether and they told me I'd lose my unlimited. Don't know how true it is since everyone hears something different.
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using xda premium
When it comes to the VZW CSRs you'll get a different answer everytime you call in. Since there are so many centers and a majority of them are outsourced no one is held accountable for what they say.
Manager at verizon store in my town told me I can get upgrade still keep my unlimited data, they would just put upgrade on one of lines that has 2 basic phones and I be in another 2 year's with unlimited data nothing changes. I'm planning to get DNA this Friday. Just have to find employee that willing to help u out.
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk 2
You can change to a shared plan and keep your unlimited data but it will be expensive. If you choose the legacy Nationwide Share Talk and Text plans, you can keep unlimited data on your line ONLY, and still add as many lines as you want. Again, it will be expensive.
I used to be on the 450 minute plan with unlimited text and data...was about 95 a month after tax. I changed to the Nationwide 1400 plan (100.00), plus unlimited text (29.99), kept my unlimited data (29.99), added 2gb for my wife's line (30.00), and there is a 9.99 access charge per line. Add in insurance, my Slacker subscription, and tax, and i am paying about $185 for 2 lines.
You would definitely save money by going to a Share Everything plan.
