Thinking about getting this tablet - HTC Flyer, EVO View 4G

I have an inspire 4g and have been looking at this tab for a while. To get a taste of it, I flash the flyer port
To my inspire and I like the UI. So I'm wondering what are some pros and cons?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA Premium App

I hve tried it for several hours last week (it is not mine, I borrowed it)
I must say, that the Flyer is working very nice even with its single core processor.
Currently I can not find any bad things I can say about this gadget.
Aluminium case looks awesome.
You will get the pointer (pointer, stick, whatever...I dunno what it is called) and the leather case which is awesome.
The only problem is the promised 3.0 update, I am not very sure about this update since HTC has problems already with Desire 2.3 updates.
You might want to wait untill the update comes.".

HTC Flyer Rooted VS Apple IPAD 2 jailbreaked

Currently running HTC Desire HD with Leedroid ROM on it rooted obviously.
I have to choice in between the HTC Flyer Rooted and an IPAD 2 which one would you go choose and why?
Can only choose between the two of them unfortunately !
I see also that it seems that you can hack the 3G on Flyer to make normal cellular calls?
I cannot seem to find something similar for IPAD 2?
How is the fact that HTC Flyer is not running on a TAB version of Android OS had a negative effect if any for you?
Thanks
Hard to say. My instinct is anything android over apple but on a pure monetary bassis if price to you is the same then the iPad 2 is a bigger bargain, although I would just sell it and buy an android tab

I actually have both a rooted HTC Flyer running the latest HC leak and a jailbroken iPad. Overall the iPad is the best tablet on the market, I personally love the size and it feels great in hand, but the real reason it is the best is because of the user experience. I know most on this site lean more towards Android devices(even if they are inferior), but don't let that sway you, the iPad is an amazing device and the way the apps work on it, you will never see that on any current Android tablets.
That is not to say that the Flyer is not a very good tablet, I really like it, it is solidly built, although a little on the heavy side, has a nice screen and doesn't have too much lag. If your looking for a less expensive and smaller tab, I would say the Flyer is a very good option, but if you have the opportunity to get either the Flyer or iPad2, in my opinion, it's not even close.
Ios is as boring a user experienceas possible. I have an iPhone through work and my flyer. I would take android everytime. I am bored with ios about 1 day after every software update
Sent from my HTC Flyer P510e using xda premium
Horses for courses, both good devices but with different usage patterns one can be better or worse than the other. The flyer works better for me, sold the ipad because it didn't meet my needs and don't regret it at all, I know of others who have done the same and the reverse.
You really have to try them to know which is better for you, simple as that.
ICS...
Well, the Flyer is due to receive an official HTC Ice Cream Sandwich update so you won't always be stuck on Froyo/Gingerbread

Flyer alternative?

i dropped my flyer and now i have a couple of verticle lines going straight down the screen. im still waiting to see how much it'll cost to repair, but if its too much, i will probably just buy a new tablet
i thought the flyer was great, especially with the stylus, but seeing how it is losing support, i was wondering if there was any other 7 inch tablets out there that had the same quality stylus support as the flyer?

Something that is gonna be supported in the next year with at least ICS
One problem we all have;
when devs update the SW by 0.0.1 we all need to get one. Hmmm really?
Fu*k all the upgrades as long as device is doing what u need for ya. I love Flyer and wont cry ower ICS, wich is already old and off date by JB. Blah. Updating new devices to be able to load up lates OS doesent look smart anymore specially with costs of devices... and obviuslly mine payment at work.
Looks like all this upgrades r onlly to push u to buy new devices. 500€ for phone this days... I mean common. Flyer was what 600€ or even more when came out...
Blah...
I love HC Leedroid rome 4.3 with Holo luncher now.
So on the end, buy ICS compatible device today and stay out of JB suport tomorow. Run to the store for new one. No recesion in the world i would say
Samsung is having great success with stylus integration based on the Galaxy Note, which is getting ICS updates. They are about to release a series of tablets with stylus, I would look at those.
I got a Note recently to replace my iphone. I hardly ever use my flyer now. The Note obviously has a smaller screen, but does have a higher resolution.
So, my flyer is now for sale

haha i WISH my flyer could last me the next five years, but if i have a choice with a device that is no longer going to be supported or upgraded and a newer device, i have to go with the newer one
i know the galaxy note is great, but i want something that is wifi only
by surfing online, it really seems that the flyer was a one of a kind tablet with its stylus.... its so sad that it didnt sell well and htc is giving it a cold shoulder
The next set of Samsung tablets will have pens so don;t cry about Flyer.
HTC's poor sales record has been noticed by Microsoft. MS does not want HTC to build its first Windows 8 tablets.
http://www.phonearena.com/news/Weak-sales-keep-HTC-from-launching-first-Windows-8-tablet_id31074
And why can it not? Siriuslly your wife is longa age and stil lasts you LOL.

There will be no update from HTC, time to move on.

I gotta say it how it is. Your wasting time and energy trying to change their minds about the subject. HTC is clueless and most likely will be bought out before the end of the year. Don't fret though you have options. For one, we got some great developers here working to make honeycomb better and bring us ICS and Jelly Bean. But if you can't stand your flyer anymore and don't wanna hold out for our developers, then welcome to the era of cheap tablets! The Flyer is still worth some bucks on ebay, if you got a 32gig model with a pen you can get over 200 for it easy. And with that you could grab a Nexus 7 or Gtab2.
I know where you guys are coming from and trust me I was there too. I was looking for an affordable tablet with decent specs and passed over several other nice tablets because this was an HTC and I expected more from it. I didn't expect an ics update but I thought I'd like honeycomb more, and when I saw this tablet for $200 and honeycomb I was all about it.
We've already tried everything from spamming their Facebook page to online petitions. HTC is cleaning their slate and trying to start over with the one series. Will it work? Probably not because they are pissing off alot of customers on the process and it's too little too late for HTC. Sense 4 is a step in the right direction but it's still a far departure from stock ics and still too intrusive, and since the galaxy s3 launch you've heard very little about the one series.
Just remember you can always cut your losses and buy another tablet. That's what finally calmed me down, realizing that.

Or you can enjoy the Flyer for what it is. I'm perfectly happy with my Flyer and can see myself holding on to it for another year or so. It does what I wanted then I bought it. A year from now I'll probably start looking for something a bit faster. Let's face it: no Android update is going to put a Tegra 3 into this device. But for now, my Flyer is just great, than you very much.
Its my eBook reader. And being an HTC fanboy for so long (7 years?), I'm going to steer away from them. Google branded nexus devices are best imo, in terms of updates and such. I've bought too many devices from HTC in the past 3-4 years that have been abandoned by them just soon after release.
I like my Flyer the way it is. And it does what it's supposed to. But it doesn't change the fact that, should it be updated to ICS, it will move faster that on HC, be compatible with more apps, and all in all, be better.
To me, it's a pity it's not updated. It's not the end of the world, it's just... sad.

+1 I am in love with my flyer. I too enjoy the flyer for what it is and will be holding onto it as it does what I wanted when i bought it. the only thing I wish I had was chrome browser (hopefully will get that as soon as Lisbon is fully developed). I think I just need to stop reading posts that make me feel that I should be dissatisfied when i am in fact very satisfied. I also need to stop reading post whereas it's as if HTC owes me something more for what I purchased. well maybe they do and maybe they don't but it does get tiresome reading complaints about it when in fact either nothing is going to be done about it or the complaints are made to those who can't do anything about it. and before I get screamed on - I know that this is a forum and it's purpose is to voice your opinion as often and as loud as you want. it's just that I want people to show the flyer some love. so now that I've had my say (which is really just said tongue in cheek) I would just like to say "can't we all just get along?"
Glad you guys can because if we didn't have developers I would of sold mine after 3 months. It your choice of gigantic phone or tablet ui slower than an atari 2600. Just sayin lol.
I'll be fair in saying gingerbread isn't bad but the Google apps running in phone mode and looking hideous kill it for me
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2
At any rate I'm enjoying mine now. Got mine on ioidroid senseless honeycomb, found an old version of adw ex where the tablet ui displays correctly and, I got things pretty spartan on it, and it works and its fast too. Overall for me the goal is to have an Android tablet that's fast and usable, not necessarily up to date
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2
to be honest I am not happy with the lack of software updates but I have not found a replacement 7" tablet on the market that can replace my Flyer's functionality. So I may not buy another HTC device, but if I am being honest it is a featured packed device that handles nearly every task you can throw at it. Now I didnt pay full price, and I likely would be more upset if I did, but for the $299 I paid for mine it is a very nice device.

well to be honest my love for the flyer is mainly due to the devs (and I prefer honeycomb over gingerbread). but the way that I see it is to just make the best of the situation at hand. if you can move on then by all means move on. if you can't afford to then make the best of what you have. and if you are sticking around for the sake of sticking around then please don't cry along the way and bring others down. And I'm not speaking of anyone in particular, please I don't want to make any enemies here. I come here for the fun of it not to chastise anyone (if I wanted to do that I have three children) or to be chastised (I have a wife for that)
When I find a decent tablet with a phone that takes a SIM card, I'll be all over it. That Samsung looks promising but I don't know if it'll take a SIM card.
Yeah I can't complain, my flyer cost me $200, and if I had waited for the Nexus 7 I wouldn't have the money now because my wife would of spent it on something else lol. That's married life for ya. At any rate I've gotten my money's worthy out of it and I got it running pretty fast. Just sick of the recent rally to try and get ics from htc again, didn't we just go through this a couple of months ago? It's a lost cause if you really want ics you either need to cut your losses or just be patient with our developers because it's not like one person decided not to update the flyer, a board of directors and a lot of other people did, and there simply aren't enough flyer owners to have any pull with HTC anyway
Sent from my HTC Flyer P510e using Tapatalk 2
I like my flyer, it is great for browsing and casual computing. I love the capacity of the unit and the expandability. It does everything I need. I'm still on GB; I never thought that HC was that good for a 7 inch tablet.
It's not really designed for 7 inch tabs no doubt. Really I'd be fine with gingerbread if the Google apps were just tablet optimized. Jelly bean addresses the need for a separate tablet ui for 7 inch tabs but imo they didn't put much thinking into it as you now have 2 black bars instead of 1
Also the phone launcher just sucks imo. Should of kept the honeycomb launcher and kept the buttons where they put them but no bar just buttons.
But on that note if we can get jelly bean with virtual buttons disabled it might just be perfect for our old tablet

I don't care if HTC is going to be bought by someone, I'm going to keep trying to get the update. I might not get it, but at least they'll have to see what they've done written at their facebook pages and many more will know. Call it revenge, vendetta, whatever you want, I don't care, I own 4 Sensations too, and I've been a loyal HTC customer for years... and I have never been in this situation before. I can understand HTC not updating a device released two years ago, but the Flyer was released a year ago and ICS 6 months later.
And they're lying at us saying the tablet is optimized for Honeycomb... I don't like it when people lie to me.
Here in Europe the Flyer 3g was sold at 700€. That's 848 US $ at today's exchange rate... It's not a cheap device and it should have the update to something presented 6 months after Flyer was released. Don't you think???
I agree, my flyer cost USD 700. Not so fortunate. I really appreciate your effort.

I purchased the Flyer because of its pen functionality and what it could do out of the box. Anyone who's ever purchased an Android phone knows that most devices only see one major software update. The Flyer got Honeycomb, which was no small feat. To my knowledge, HTC was the only OEM to update a tablet from Android 2.3 to Android 3.0. For a half second, I contemplated getting the Nexus 7, but I can't bear the thought of losing my pen functionality simply to say that I have a faster tablet with the latest version of Android.
I take issue with the statement that HTC will be bought out by the end of the year. While HTC has suffered a huge loss in the past three quarters, the company's revenue and profits are still solid. If HTC were a U.S. traded company, it would rank between 150-180 in the fortune 500 list and its YTD 2012 profits would be comparable to CBS, Progressive and Sysco.
Yeah but they still are clueless at what people want. Take the one series. Where are the sd cards and removable batteries? And why does the att version have half the storage? Why does sense 4.0 still have a gingerbreadish looking notification bar? Who gives a rats ass about beats by Dre?

Stick with HTC or move on?

Titles says it all, I've noticed lesser build quality on the lte vs the og evo. I can fix software related issues but hardware seems to be crap. So the question is should I stay or move on? I'm a strong believer in the user makes the dev so I'm holding a vote. Yall choose.

I'm using your Sinister LTE V8, it's the best rom for me.
Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app
Idk..I've had a lot of phones and I say they all have issues. The OG EVO I had replaced a number of times for the same reasons. The charging port broke on 2 of them and the external speaker blew on two of them. My Nexus S 4G had awful signal reception. Both my GS3 and Note 2 offered my callers an echo on their end. I had a moto photon that after about 10 mins on a phone call would drop the call. I'm sure some of these were my device specific (Note 2) as others never experienced them. Guess what I'm saying is that it's hit or miss. Personally, I've always liked HTC because development seems better. While there is lots with the the Samsung devices, I feel the roms are all kind of the same. With HTC we have lots of innovation. Ports from newer devices, nice mods, etc..so, if flashing is you thing (development for Sin) then I'd keep rolling with HTC.

Seems to me lately that HTC is slowing down on devs working on it, mainly because other phones like the galaxy series are picking up more devs every time the phone releases. Maybe with the HTC One things will change since it will be the same phone across multiple carriers, only difference might be the radio.
We certainly dont have more roms than they do, but the few roms that we have are different enough to be worth looking in to.
Doesn't hurt to try anything new. I'm personally aiming for an s4 but we'll see how it compares to the one, although I'm not really impressed by it(the one that is).

If I was going to get a new phone this year, it would most likely be the One. Build quality looks outstanding, and from what I've seen, Sense 5 seems decent. I'm sure any one of the talented devs around here could tweak it to near-perfection. As it is, I'm happy keeping my EVO for another year and seeing what goodness I can upgrade to in 2014.
The only other option would be the S4, but unless Samsung ups their game in design and gets over their fascination with that CRAPOLED display, I won't go there.
Now, if HTC came out with say, a 5.5" version of the One, with that beautiful display and build, I would be like "Shut up and take my money."

100% agree. To me, the GS3 was nothing compared to my EVO. The only reason I might say I liked the Note 2 better was because battery life is outstanding on it and it has a quad core. But both felt so cheap to me. My Note 2 battery door was always popping open. In fact, there is a thread on it. Common issue. Touchwiz is is gross, imo. And the only mods to it seem to be to turn it red or blue lol..at least that's what it was a few months ago when I had the devices.

Surprised to see someone complain about the hardware/build quality of HTC. My launch day Evo 4g is still intact and solid and functional. The unibody aluminum chassis this device is built from seems amazing to me, and the seems around the screen are perfection. The One appears to be even more solid and stunning, and looks like it will be more comfortable to hold due to the curved back. I'm impressed with HTC hardware. Unless, if maybe by hardware you're referring to the radios, which I have seen a lot of complaints about here (but I have none, personally)
Hope you roll with HTC, Sin.
From my Evo LTE, yup.
I think the build quality on my lte rocks. I have owned the og evo, the 3d, and now the lte. Can't say tis one is any less "quality" than the other two. It is just the thin form I think that makes u feel that way. My og and 3d were quite bulky if u were to compare it with this one.

I got the LTE on preorder and never had any of the problems others mentioned hardware wise. I proceeded to brick that 1 downgrading firmware but my replacement has been flawless. The only issue I have is my phone being a little to sensitive to lower voltages. Not a big deal really. The main reason I stick with HTC is how good the phones look and I've never had really had big problems with them yet.
Now with the ONE coming its gonnna be hard to get me off it. I just looks so damn good. Definitely gonna wait a few months before I switch I up tho.
Hope you stay with HTC sin. Seems like your always trying to bring something different and unique to the device.

the only thing that I don't like with HTC is that they're moving away from the SD slot and the user replaceable battery. Other than that, I prefer HTC because of their quality of build.
I'm not sure if I want the One or not. I mean, I -do- want it, but I -really- like the idea of having an SD slot in my phone, and I like having an extra battery just in case. It does look like a sexy phone, though....argh...will have to check it out and see how well it handles in person.
In my experience HTC phones have amazing build quality. Had an OG EVO that is still functional with no problems at all. This one is still fine. My dad has an EVO Design that got dropped in a foot of water and still works. Quality for me at least.

Not sure what Sprint will bring out this summer after the One and the SG4. Probably a Windows device. The One seems to have excellent specs and a perfect size screen....and looks cool as hell too
via EVO.
I feel as if HTC or Asus are your best bet hardware/build quality wise. Then again, I'm a little biased towards how cheap and plastic-like Samsung phones feel. Google even admitted Motorola phones for the next year are a big let down. I think the LTE was an attempt at new design concepts, and it will only get better. I've used the One X+ a lot, and it's amazingly fast and responsive. I can only image the HTC One is even better.
Here's the deal...
I have used HTC phones since the original T-Mobile Shadow, with windows mobile. Since then I have had the Touch, Hero, Diamond, and the OG EVO and EVO LTE, but although I found HTC to make good quality devices design and hardware wise, it was the DEV for the LTE that let me down. I remember taking my HTC Touch with windows mobile and running android for the first time. Since then I never turned my back on Android, but I just felt like something was lacking with the LTE. I was pretty disappointed in the amount of similiar roms and tacky themes. One preson said the GS3 DEV was lacking...are you kidding me???!! Look at those forums again, and you'll see a plethora of STABLE,SMOOTH, and DIFFERENT ROMS. Yea, Touchwiz is kiddy in a sense, but it still remains one of the best overlays on Android. It just works!! I love HTC SENSE, but after a while you feel like your held back by the way it looks and feels. I say go with whatever you prefer, but take it from an HTC LOYALIST, that the GS3 IS A BEAST AND IT HAS PLENTY OF CUSTOM ROMS AND KERNELS THAT CAN MAKE THE LTE LOOK LIKE AN OUTDATED PEICE OF METAL. Yea, the galaxy line is plasticy, but other than that, what can you complain about?? Great camera? Great screen? Great development? Official support for many popular roms? MIUI W/LTE?? LOL(I love MIUI) but it is a great device and I recommend that anyone who has problems deciding try it... Oh, and this isnt my first Samsung. I've had the GNEX,S2,EPIC,even the Transform which was complete garbage. I even gave up my Nexus 4 in favor of the S3...I say Samsung over the rest for 2013, but if you happen to get your hands on a MEIZU or XIAOMI that works in the US, well then youre talking a whole nother level...lol
Get the N4 !

Bye Bye Flyer :(

So after 2 years of GREAT experiance with the device i sold it today due to no more support and i was stuck on 2.3 Ginger with it couse of BT support for calls.
Emo about the sell but hey,...
GL to all.
It's a pity. The tablet has potential for a completely functional ICS ROM. Had I more time to "nerd up" on being a Dev, I would gladly look at trying to bring the joys of ICS or JB goodness to all flyer users. The hardware itself is stunningly sleek. (Aluminum casing, ffs That's quality)
But alas, I have caved into my gadget lust for the latest Nexus 7. With the upcoming release of "KitKat" (seriously, Google...WHY???!?!), I do believe it is time to bid adieu to this great piece of tech as well. HTC......you had a LOT of potential for this device. Too bad ya botched up on pricing it out of the gate poorly The pen is also a great accessory.
As to the fate of my flyer. I'll prolly end up letting my son have it. We'll see.

I've reluctantly moved on to the LG G Pad 8.3 as my primary tablet. I'm keeping my Flyer around for my four year old to play with. I'm running the JellyBean ROM on it for him to use, but I would love to see KitKat at some point! Flyer, you have served me well but died an early death.
thinking about it also....
I have been thinking about moving on myself - bought the Flyer refurb'd a year ago or so - rooted - have used a bunch of ROMS , LeeDroid was sweet , currently on some custom ICS phone ROM I think - but its starting to feel old...a little slow ...when I use my wifes iPad4 its just so much peppier - trying to decide between a Nexus 7 , Galaxy Tab 8.0 , iPad mini , or something else...not sure ...have trouble saying goodbye though....
I managed to sell my Evo View on ebay for $120. Then, I found a good deal for a Galaxy Note 10.1 (2012).
It definitely feels like a different beast with the screen size upgrade. However, I think the Evo View actually has a better screen and more accurate pen. The Evo View also felt nicer to hold and type with.
I would have kept my HTC if only they upgraded to Jelly Bean or higher.
Seems i have to force shut the apps im using now and then, running latest stock rom.
Thinking i shuld try a custom rom before letting my flyer go.
