[Q] Phone keeps losing default application setting. - HTC Aria Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've noticed this a few times now and is starting to get annoying - my phone occasionally forgets what application I have set as the default. Examples: Choice Dialer vs native voice dial, LauncherPlus vs HTC sense, Stock browser vs Opera. This is most annoying with the dialer, as I constantly use Bluetooth voice dialing and always have to fish the phone out of my pocket while driving to either re-enable the default app or just manually dial - kinda defeats the purpose of voice dialing.
This is an unrooted Aria with the ATT Bloatware enriched 2.2.2 software.
Has anyone seen this before? I have not updated any of the aforementioned software recently, so it puzzles me that the OS would forget that I set a particular program as a default.

Not sure if this is your problem but everytime you install a new app that can be set as a particular default it will reset your defaults. e.g. if you have launcherpro as your default home and you install adw launcher, your phone will remove your home app default and you are forced to re-set it.

Yep, I'm aware of that nuance, but that is not the case here - no apps were installed in the intervening period - specifically, having LPP "losing" its default status and being prompted to use it or Sense happened overnight with nothing going on in between. I have never used or downloaded any other bluetooth dialer as Choice Dialer works extremely well for me and have no reason to change - it is an app that routinely "loses" its default status.
Just a strange quirk that has been mild annoyance - it will all go away once I root this phone and ditch Sense all together.
Thanks,
T

I think simply updating one of the apps from the list will cause this to happen as well. If you aren't even updating any apps when it happens then I don't really have any clue what's going on. Could be some poorly written app you have installed that keeps resetting it? Dunno.

[Q] Launcherpro plus question(battery consump.)

I'm not able to get an answer anywhere about this...my question:
I am running launcher pro plus, using facebook app, twitter, etc. that comes with it... Do I have to disable TW facebook app, email, etc. from TW ahead of time? Will they keep running in the background since they were enabled prior to switching to LPP? Or once you choose between the two, the one picked is the one that is running?
It might sound stupid, but I've always wondered if you needed to disable some futures before switching "home" and if they would be running in the background killing the battery. Should I keep "active sync on?" etc....
Hope this makes any sense....please someone help! I really don't want to juice anymore battery...thanks!

Why wouldn't you just disable them instead of worrying about it? You can go look at running services and see if they are..
if you're talking about the widgets then don't worry about it....they wont even be able to start up since tw is not loaded, even if you try to manually load it it will fail. Any other app that is non dependant of tw will run fine, like regular facebook app/widget and not the tw one

[Q] Checklist before performing hard reset on Android 2.2?

I have an HTC Desire Z, and it's been acting strangely lately. I hear it play the startup sound when it's in my pocket, meaning the phone has crashed when I wasn't even doing anything. I suppose it's time for a hard reset. I'm very reluctant to do this, but when I missed an important call the other day because my "com.htc.phone" (or whatever) application crashed and I didn't notice, that was the last straw.
What is a checklist of things I should do before hard resetting? So far, I've:
1) Backed up SMS
2) Taken screenshots of all my home screens so as to put the icons back in the same place
3) Taken screenshots of the application settings screens so as to install all the same applications again
4) Taken screenshots of some of the other settings screens, so as to use the same ringtone, background, SMS beep, etc.
What are some other steps I should take? I'm scared that I won't get my phone set up the same way again. My phone is great right now, it's just how I like it - except for the crashes.
Is your phone rooted? If so, TitaniumBackup (TB) would be all you need. You can get TitaniumBackup, free and paid, from the market. TB can backup your screen settings according to the launcher apps. For example, I use Go Launcher and when I do a full backup of Go Launcher, it will backup icons positions and everything else that I have changed in Go Launcher.
It may not be necessary to reset your whole device if your just getting one or two processes force closing themselves. The first thing to check is see if you have installed an app that might be conflicting with system apps (try and remember the last time it was working correctly and uninstall apps that you've installed since then).
If this isn't the issue you can also try to wipe app data/cache for the app in question. I hope this makes sense

Well, I'm not really sure what's causing the problem. My phone came installed with crapware, and lately I've found software installing itself on my phone without my knowledge. I know for a fact the "QQ Security" crapware the phone came with did indeed prevent my phone from functioning correctly.

[Q] Where to install 3rd party keyboards so they stick on reboot?

I use swiftkey, but I know it's an issue with ICS, that any 3rd party keyboard does not stick upon reboot because: "The issue is that Google Play installs paid apps in a particular location on your phone and that in some versions of Android (particularly 4.1 on Samsung devices) this location is not available at the point in the boot process where keyboards are being switched on. So your phone does not know that you have SwiftKey, and it defaults back to the phone’s keyboard.
We are unable to control where Google Play installs the app, and also unable to do anything about the way in which your phone boots up, so we are essentially powerless."
So, with that being said, if you have root, where would you want to install the keyboard to, because I just tried system/app and it still didn't stick upon reboot.
Forcing sticky settings
I ran into this exact problem trying to use a 3rd party spell checker on my Nexus 10 running Android 4.2.2 in a mostly stock environment
(Nova launcher, Lookout Premium security & privacy app)..... Long explanation follows of what I tried, skip to ¶ for the solution.
WARNING: THIS COULD HOSE YOUR PHONE SO USER BEWARE!!
After uninstalling almost everything I had downloaded, except the spell checker, I still couldn't get the setting to stick.
So, I started disabling Android apps like the dictionary provider & user dictionary apps. Still no sticky setting.
I finally downloaded a 3rd party keyboard app to replace the Android keyboard - AI-type is the app name & it's free - but while the setting
for the new keyboard stuck, the spell checker setting still didn't.
¶ I noticed that the Android keyboard app was running even though the alternate was working. So, I disabled the Android keyboard app itself. Voila!!
The spell checker setting finally stuck! It appears that even though I had selected an alternative keyboard, the Android keyboard app still runs & resets
whatever it pleases back to the default, regardless what the user did to the settings.
I would suggest you trying the same thing: disable the Android keyboard app, after sitting the input device to your 3rd party
keyboard. Hopefully, that forces Android to go directly to the alternate keyboard.
You may want to make sure the voice input stuff works, in case Android really can't find your keyboard app. Otherwise,
you're totally hosed without an Android input device.
I hope that works.... but please don't come after me if my suggestion hoses your phone.
Caveat emptor & all that; I am still a junior member of this forum. Even though I have ~30yrs experience as software engineer,
I know little about the Android guts. I'm learning, though.

Extremely slow and unresponsive dialer

Hi all,
Over the past couple of days, I've noticed that when I'm in the dialer, trying to make a call, my phone is extremely laggy and unresponsive and it takes forever to actually get it to make a call.
I press the call button and nothing happens for a couple of seconds. It's extremely frustrating.
I've tried clearing the app data and cache of the dialer as well as clearing app cache (from storage) but nothing seems to work.
The slowness doesn't appear anywhere else and only happened after the latest firmware update. Anyone else with a similar problem, and any way to fix this?
Thanks
Get the ex dialer and your problem is solved fast small powerfully
Settings/Developer Options/ tick on "Force GPU Rendering, Disable HW Overlays & Force 4x MSAA" should make the beast smoother, faster. If you are rooted, install a custom kernel, from Play Store Entropy/fstrim apps/L Speed.
Have you cleared your call log? I've found if it gets too large, it tends to slow down the app.

Made the beast faster but the dialer lag problem persists. Its the latest update. Some sort of bug in it.
Same problem on my phone
Yes, mee too. I have several situations when the dialer gets slower and unresponsive. Maybe we can try a 3rd party solution, like is Nova for the launcher... Do this alternative exist?
Backup contacts , delete them and restore. That should to it. It did for me. All lags gone.
The right way to remove lag from dialer and contacts first backup your contacts and then go in settings>apps and delete data from these two apps contacts and contacts storage.

No effect for me! Seems to be a major bug in V30. The lag when searching a contact can be sometimes even 2 seconds, a shame for 2018.
So, no 3rd party app is capable to replace the original LG Contacts / Dialer app?

I have around 1700 contacts and even opening scrolling down and clicking on random contact opens in a second or less.
How did you backed your contact through lg backup or contacts export?
Contacts - manage contacts - back up
Same here 930DS V30+, extremely frustrating..... contacts and dialer are extremely laggy, very painful, any idea what's causing it, seems to search constantly for contacts online and refresh is very slow....
I am desparate.....
It's a pitty because otherwise the phone is the best I have ever had...
Please help!!!
From my experience, this huge lag is not present everytime when I access the Contact / Dial functions. The challenge is to discover what make this apps so laggy, maybe another app that runs simultaneous. I was waiting to see the lag after clear all apps and reopen Contacts / Dialer but today I have no lag anymore, even at the first start of the apps.
Untill we will discover the reason, we will get Oreo in March
I found the solution! Google Phone! It works wonderful! Bye, bye LG Dialer (no root)
From a user: " When you install it, make sure and go to your settings menu, then apps, then Configure apps, and then set the new dialer to be your default phone app. "

Question Changing Default Apps

I was wondering if anyone with the Find N can test to see if they can change the default apps and see if it sticks?
I always use Google Messages and Dialler and was hoping I was able to change them as have it stick. I know the issues with the Launcher and I am concerned that it will be the same with these other apps.
On a side note has anyone been able to get Android Auto to work?
What would the dab command be to set the default sms ?
I have found this:-
How to disable any pre-installed system app bloatware on Android without root
If you hate the bloatware or pre-installed apps on your Android smartphone, here's how to disable them even if Android doesn't normally let you.
www.xda-developers.com
Not sure if it will cause damage so perhaps use it with caution!
Hey bud! Just downloaded both Google Messages and Phone and was able to switch it to default. I used adb commands to remove all the bloatware, and it's wayyyy less chinese-y.
Only thing I still can't figure out is how to get Nova Launcher working, as I preferred how that ran before. That said, it's starting to feel way nicer now.
Are they actually sticking though and survive a reboot? Have you tried Android Auto?
How did you get rid of the default messaging app please post ads commands : )
I read in another sad forums that even after deleting the default sms app and installing google sms you will still get the pop up

I tried disabling the default sms app and using google messages did not work.. will not let me send texts via any app
So here's the deal, don't remove the default messaging app or replace it with Google messages. It won't work the way you think it will. I was able to remove the default messaging app via adb. You'll be able to set the Google messaging app to default. The issue is, every time you get a text, you'll get a pop-up saying something like "your default messaging app was changed back due to security". It'll do this every time you get a new text.

Are you getting the pop up giving you the security warning everytime you receive a message?
Yes. I gave up. Using oppos now.
Ah that is not great, does it allow RCS messaging at all? That may be a deal breaker for me!
There IS an option but only for heytap users only...
I received mine and the limitations are too great. The hardware is awesome, but is ruined by horrible software that is locked down so strictly. The messaging and Android Auto issues were the things that made the decision easy.
If this ever gets a International release I will be all over it, but unfortunately I cannot handle the limits.
