ok i have a rooted droid x2 (via gingerbreak) and have been having no luck finding the splash screen files or .png so that i can replace with my own. i have checked the system/media and the data/local directories and still nothing.
my second problem is that in my attempts to create my own boot animations i only get a black screen on reboot. all i am doing is extracting the bootanimation.zip file, editing the .png's with GIMP, then re-zipping with winrar. not sure if i am compressing incorrectly?
any help or redirection with either of these would be greatly apprieciated. thank you for your time.
for those who are looking at this for answers you just change the winrar compression setting to store for the boot screen.

I know this is probably not the right place to post this, but I am trying to figure out how to install a boot animation on my vibrant. I have cm7 installed and found a forum that helped but all I get is a black screen or the plain android logo. I used super manager and moved the zip file to /system/media. And set the permissions to what it told me to. When I reboot nothing. Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated. I have become quite savvy with my phone. Thanks.

You didn't exactly say this but, is the file named simply bootanimation.zip? Not talking down but trying to help. Other than that seems good.
The original file was named bootanimation.zip and I found a transformers one that I wanted and it was named bootanimation_transformers.zip. I tried leaving the file name, got the android logo. Renamed it and got a black screen.

search the Vibrant forum on custom boot animations... download a flashable zip boot animation file from one of the great devs on here then swap your images in place of theirs, re-zip it and flash it with CWM... worked for me like a charm!
One question, how do I replace images? Super manager won't let me unzip files. Do I need to use the PC for that or is there a simpler way?

My vote goes to PC
I used PC for everything as well...
Unzipped and re-zipped with 7zip and modded images with Gimp...
Thanks, I will give that a try when I get home and let you if it worked. Just to maybe clarify. Would I have to unzip both the original file and the new file and replace the new files with the original file and rezip and put back? Cause that is what I am going to try.

I'm trying to create my own bootanimation and was wondering if any of you guys know how to make it play in landscape mode?
I'm not aware of any way using the desc.txt so you'll probably just have to rotate the images.
Yup. Have to rotate images.
Assimilated via WinBorg 4G
Do I have to change the pixel resolution? I have it 960x540 right now.

No, resolution will be exactly the same. Just you are rotating the images through 90 degrees.

I restarted the phone and the animation is just blank then the phone just loads up. I had the files as .png but it didn't work so I changed them to jpg and still nothing. Can anyone check what i done wrong? I will attach my bootanimation file.

Without downloading your files, (I am at work and don't have the time right now), I would say you probably did not zip the files correctly.
1. Download and install 7-Zip.
2. Highlight your boot animation files, (CTRL or SHIFT and left click).
3. Right click on selected files.
4. Select 7-Zip > Add to archive.
5. Set Archive Format to Zip and Compression Level to Store.
6. Name your zip file accordingly (e.g. bootanimation).
7. Click OK.
Your bootanimation.zip should now be zipped correctly.

OK, I did the work for you. It was the way you zipped the boot animation up. Here is the working animation:

Remember to rename it to bootanimation.zip
Cheers!
Thanks a bunch, I just tried it and it only plays 1/4 of the images and then turns black, I have to see what's going on.

I use this to preview my boot animations before installing them, got it from despotovski01 on this thread... nice write up and tools.. the links are @ step 7 of the first post...

I found that editing the desc.txt file to make sure that there is a 'return' after the last line cures alot of the issues, and making sure you're zipping in 'store' mode..
Thanks I will try it when I get home from work

I finally got it, Thanks for the links. It helped me out so much.

Yeah, I found that even at 32bits, the animation works, it was the last return after the last line in desx.txt file that was killing my animation.. haha.. but, I try to save in .jpg as it takes up less space and I couldn't tell the difference between the .png and .jpg boot animations...
have fun!
From what I had read here and in a couple of other forums, changing the boot animations and sounds SHOULD be as easy as finding the animation you want( in .png format) putting it and your preferred sound effect(in mp3 or .ogg format) in an uncompressed .zip file, place the .zip in the system/customize/resource folder on your phone with the name bootanimation.zip. (you would obviously have to replace the existing file by that name
I went looking in that folder on my evo, and discovered that the file is actually named Sprint_bootanimation.zip. So I downloaded the animation I wanted. (The red DROID eye) and the sound I wanted (The DROID voice), renamed them accordingly, and placed them in the proper folder. Now I just get a black screen with NO animation when I boot up. Everything else works fine. The phone boots with no problem, I just have no animations. I still have the old files present, just renamed, so its not a problem to put them back, but I WANT that DROID eye and sound!!!
Any ideas as to what I may be doing wrong? Honestly, this little thing is more important to me than almost any other mod/hack/rom that I could change.
Hi, I've followed the instructions from: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1321360
Not only do I not get my boot and down animations to not work, now they are showing different text from the original Mean ROM animations that I backed up, now the say "Androi"d on booting and "Powering Down", I haven't seen this is any of my searching...
I've checked the default.xml file and they point to the regular System/Customize/Resource folders.
Zips work in the boot animation factory.
My png files are 360x640 and the desc files are listed as 720x1080 (all portrait files) including blank space at the end
Files are named: SPC_bootanimation.zip and SPC_downanimation.zip
Can anyone advise? Thanks in advance.

Edit: just checked my file permission: rw-,r--,r-- still no change.
Hmm maybe this should be in the Q&A forum, mod please move if appropriate. thanks!
I'll take a look at it in about an hour

DAMN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
that zip is 258mb
for a bootani wtf whats in there???
lol thanks for checking...I got about 40 seconds of 360x640 frames at 30fps. When I extracted frames from a GIF for the down animation, the files were small. but when I extracted frames from a downloaded youtube clip, they all became bitmap images and exploded in size.
try this
Thanks Dased14 so I downloaded the bootanimation.zip file
I was curious about the format and so I booted into HBoot->TWRP recovery and installed that, it said successful however there was no change to the boot/down animation.
Then I recalled some people putting the bootanimation.zip file in their System\Media\ folder (likely for other devices) but I did it anyways and confirmed permissions were correct: rw-,r--,r--
The interesting change this time is there was no "Android" text on boot and "Powering Down" on down...just black screen
What do you think I can try next...
Or did I fail loading the bootanimation.zip file to the device. here's some supporting info I guess.

You flashed that zip in recovery? Right
That zip i posted was flashable. (ie reboot in to recovery, click install, locate the bootanimation.zip click it click install wipe cache and reboot system

I installed in recovery but there was no change to boot animation. I'll try again...

and not to burst you bubble but that boot anim is massive and i mean massive... I just made on recently and slimmed it down to 125mb which is huge and 258mb is extremely large your sucking up your system partition space and memory.
Just made this one like 5 days ago best bet is to remove every other image... I batched it out in ps to change the names to single digitis with an action and then use batch to remove the odd numbers... Thats what I did but your best bet is probably to just remove them by hand every odd image remove it out... Originally this boot animation was 540mb and i got it down to 120 and I did that through winoptpng and removing images... Remember dont opt regular black images b/c they'll index... Enjoy that tid bit of information..
I slimmed it down to 21mb for him

yup total file from dased14 was 40MB for both files vs my 258MB + 3MB...still scratching my head here.
Good tip though.
I re-installed in custom recovery and cleared cache. Default Android text is on boot animation. Shut down is black screen only.
Might be a meanrom thing you can try unzipping the rom chamging out the two zips and dirty flash the rom

This tool helped me get my last boot animation to work. Maybe it will do the trick for you.
Woohoo! dirty copy into System/Customize/Resource worked! I also have a feeling I may have borked a setting or the fact that I created a .old file might have messed things up.
Updated to the new MeanBean ROM and then proceeded with copying the files over and both files worked great! Thanks for slimming down the files!
I took the OSE bootanimation.zip and extracted the folders to change the color to red and add sound. Changed color. Fixed desc.txt to play the sound I have in the system/media folder and 7-zipped it back up. Did 7-zip in store mode and not compressed. Replaced bootanimation.zip and it doesn't play the second folder even though everything is the same as before except color change and sound added (which did NOT play). What am I doing wrong? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Here's the zip.
