Would it be possible to port TouchWiz from something like the Droid Charge over to the Thunderbolt? I know its a longshot but our devs have pulled off miracles before.
Wrong section for this. Also I don't think anyone would be interested in porting it over, but good luck on that one.
With the general dislike of touchwiz 3.0 I would imagine it being unlikely.

On another note, if you're interested in the sideways scrolling app drawer try getting ADW Launcher and you can probably skin it to look like touchwiz also?
Gross... I feel like most people with samsung devices try to get rid of touchwiz.
That said, once miui is stable enough for everyday use that is fairly similar to touchwiz, at least in terms of the general layout and "cartoon-y" icons.

Go Launcher Ex is more or less Touchwiz with some added features. It has the horizontal scroll app drawer by default, or you can use a vertical one as well. They recently made the horizontal app drawer circular so it restarts when it reaches the end.

Maybe because people like the Android OS but want it to look a little different? There's nothing wrong with that. Get off your high horse.
generally custom aftermarket launchers serve the purpose of things without mucking up the framework and source imho.
IMO its equal to wanting to port Blur..........
On a serious note, try MIUI, i dont know how the port is going, but it is a twist between Touch-Wiz and iOS
Im not a big fan of touchwiz, but i do like the puzzle piece lockscreen, other than that, i'll reserve my judgement of touchwiz until i can get some more time playing with it. I have a girl at work that just got the Charge, an she let me play with if for a minute or two. Im trying to talk her into rooting it just so i can do it for her for the hell of it

MIUI is dependant on the RIL from an AOSP ROM. So I believe it won't be available for a daily use ROM until slayher or someone posts the RIL they have been working on.

I've read a number of general complaints about sense being bloated and unremovable but would like to understand what device resources are unavoidably consumed by it.
If it's just storage space I'm not too concered about that. But taking up RAM with programs/features I don't want is another matter, as is any wasted CPU-cycles it might spend automatically running programs in the background, or intercepting UI events.
I ask this without knowing specifically what in sense is believed to be bloated. Is there a way to see a list of things it runs or could run, and to disable each feature I don't want? Again, I don't mind if the unwanted programs remain in storage, as long as they are never run and thus don't consume RAM/CPU.
When I watch videos of the G2X, it's mind-boggling how fast every aspect of the UI is. What is sense doing that keeps the evo 3d / sensation from achieving the same level of snappiness? I have a hard time believing excessive RAM-usage or CPU even is playing any role in simply scrolling through the tray of apps. So what is it that affects things like simple scrolling speed there?
I'm guessing android has some kind of event handling, where every event is delivered to a list of programs that each decide if they want to do anything with the event or not, and maybe sense has programs registered all over the place to receive all kinds of events. This is wild speculation on my part as I'm not that familiar with how things really work, but when scrolling through apps in the app tray is slow, something besides simple resource consumption must be going on.
Anyway my general questions are: what makes it slow, and can 'it' be removed, whatever 'it' is.
I don't know where u got the idea that the evo 3d us slow..must of been in a gs2 forum..I happen to enjoy sense..and once you root you can
remove any bs..I have an evo 4g and have no lag whatsoever..don't listen to the evo 3d haters..everyone takes shots at the best

You do know the bluetooth stack in sense doesn't let you use things like wiimote, or bluetooth mouse? Those are some of the things I was referring to. Sense is more than a launcher and skin. It is a UI framework that does affect some core Android functions.
EDIT: BTW I never meant to start a war of Sense vs ASOP, I was just pointing out the misinformation that Sense is a skin, when it's more than skin deep.

+1 totally agree, once I got into really core customization of my EVO, I saw what Sense was lacking. Don't get me wrong Sense is nice for eye candy, but CM is easier to work with for deeper customization. Once again it all comes down to personal preference. I pick my phones based on hardware. I'm not a fan of Sense, Widgets, and the like. That's why I'm here. I have an Android phone I can customize the way I like. That's why most people are here. Try to embrace that rather than judging people based on your feelings/convictions. That's what people that enjoy products from a certain "fruit themed company" do.
i think people need to stop complaining and/or stfu about sense already, it's getting old. we get it, you don't like sense. hooray for you. it seems the new "hip" thing to do is hate on sense, seriously. it's so god damn annoying to read. sense isn't going anywhere, so get over it. motoblur isn't going anywhere, and neither is any other manufactorers OS. stock android is ugly as sin, and ICS looks like a toy. atleast sense is going to bring visual appeal to ICS, whereas comparing ICS to iOS makes the nexus look like a toy.
tl;dr: shut up about sense, it's not going anywhere, and it's annoying to constantly read peoples hatred towards it. get over it.

I am new to Xda and HTC phones myself and I do like sense. The short time I have been on this site, I have noticed and strangely I might add. People seem to get way to hostile over the Sense vs Asop debate. People have different tastes and what they like and its just as much their choice as anything so why be condescending or hostile over their choice.
The reason I bought the rezound myself was hardware or I would have gotten the Gnex , because I like to mod and play around with different roms. Sense was a bonus for me , because to me its just a theme I can flash or not
Mr Smith is nothing , but courteous and helpful in the 2 forums I have been on so no reason to drag his choice into the debate.
android is about choice. thats why it is different from all other brands/os.
the software can always be changed/rewritten, but you are stuck with the hardware.
like mrsmith i choose my phones based on hardware. i also happen to like sense so that i why i went with the rezound.
thats not so sat that i don like asop. i ran CM7 on my TB for that past 3 months, sense simply has more "polish" and "eye camdy" that i enjoy
personally i hope sense slims down a bit and some of the bloat and useless apps disappear, but finally they realize that beats audio should work for third party apps.
once my rezound is outdated, i will most likely end up with another HTC phone and it will be a 1.5 ghz quad core, 1 GB ram, 8/3 mp camera 10 mm thick sense 4.0 android 4.0 powered monster

I'm on this phone because it is the best phone on the market right now. It doesn't matter to me one bit what comes on the phone (Sense, blur, touchwiz, etc) except that sometimes (as it was with the Rezound initially) its impossibly hard to get rid of.
Now that I have removed like 95% of Sense/HTC related software from the system, installed my launcher of preference, I am extremely happy with my phone and battery life. I'm so glad I didn't get anything else on the market right now.
So there you have it... I picked out this phone because of the phone, not because of the manufacturer or whatever crap bloatware that particular manufacturer decided to burden us with. And just cause other people are sick of reading about how crappy Sense is does not mean I'm going to like it anymore or withhold my thoughts on the subject for their benefit. Negative reviews of a product are just as important as positive reviews.

While if I'm wrong it'd be awesome, but I think that's a typo, it'll probably be 5GB, to compete with apple's 5GB of free iCloud.
Having just come from the inspire 4g, I've had the luxury of having asopx, which if you search their forum you'll see its as close to Google source as possible with all the cm crap gutted, I've been hoping to see one pop up over here but didn't know if perhaps there just wasn't any demand here in Samsung land. Anyway the phone is awesome, just dislike touchwiz, and want the bare bones stock look and feel of ics, to which I can then customize from there. Seems like all the roms thus far have traces of touchwiz and or tons of cm tweaks and apex lanuchers and all that nonsense that we should have the ability to add from a bare bones build, kinda like a foundation to then just customize from there.
Please show some love if you want this as well, would gladly donate for some dev to get on it :beer:
CM9 and AOKP are the closest things you will get to a pure AOSP OS.
If you wanted guaranteed pure AOSP, you should've bought a Nexus device.
BTW, that "CM crap" as you put it, vastly improves the ability of the OS. As does (and this is my opinion only) Touchwiz4.

Codename Android on my Nexus S [link] is really nice. It was one of my favorites. If we could see that (at some point) on our phones, that would be awesome.
I built and ran AOSP ICS 4.0.3 for my Nexus S and I have to say that while I did it just to see it work, I didn't run it long as I missed the features that CM and other open-source projects such as Codename Android have to offer. But, to each their own.
Just my $.02.

Sorry if this post came off as if I was some form of elitiest, I was merely suggesting that if we had a nice bare bones build people can thank tweak as they saw fit, I do not claim to be an Android developer and if I could I would love to build what I'm requesting, unfortunately I do not posses those skills ,hence attempting to lure in unsuspecting developers with donations as I do respect and understand the amount of developers that do this in their spare time while maintaining real life jobs. Secondly, my past experience with cm has been poor with the inspire, perhaps it was just not as highly regarded in the inspire space as it is elsewhere. Cm just didn't play that well with that device, perhaps I was too quick to judge having moved devices.

I share this opinion. I can honestly say if I had to choose between my GS II and the Galaxy Nexus with a locked boot loader, and not rootable, I would take the GS II every time. I would not choose to run Stock ICS over CM9, AOKP, or like stated above, TouchWiz (on ICS).
As others said give AOKP a try. Its definitely daily driver stable and complete. It looks like stock ICS but adds so many features. Things like the power toggles in the notification shade, adding apps to the lock screen as shortcuts, the list is huge. I can't make a firm decision between SHOstock2 and AOKP. I spend a week on one, then swap, repeat. I think people give TW a hard time. Its not sense, its not in your face and leeching into every part of the phone. Its really subtle once you put on a different launcher, even the official att builds. When I run AOKP I miss the TW music player (with controls in the lock screen and notification shade), the video player, and the camera more than anything else. When I run TW builds I miss the people/phone app and calendar. Those are the differences to me between TW and AOSP, a vast majority of the ICS experience is the same in the two.

You could always just throw Nova or Apex Launcher on your devices, or run de-sensed rom. Side note: if you get a Samsung like the Nexus, make sure you get a GSM version. CMDA radios are one of Samsung's biggest weaknesses.

This whole thing is souring me entirely on Android.
Maybe that sounds hyperbolic, but I'm sick of having to jump through these absurd hoops to get the hardware I want with the software I want.
I love the dev community and the hard work they do, but until Android OEMs offer a way, out of the box, to run AOSP then I'm going to be rethinking my commitment to Android.
It's absurd that the double-bind we're in is to choose hardware or software.

I don't understand why the manufacturers ALL spend the time and resources to make such elaborate custom skins. I mean a custom launcher is one thing but rewriting the entire email, calander, mms, and settings apps is kind of overboard. Stock Ice cream sandwich really does not need any enhancements for the most part. The one good thing about the first set of honeycomb tablets is that they all for the most part ran aosp.

Stock Ice cream sandwich really does not need any enhancements for the most part. The one good thing about the first set of honeycomb tablets is that they all for the most part ran aosp.

probably because stock Android is ugly as sin, it's widgets are ugly, and it's bland and boring. a lot of people feel this way, and we embrace sense because it actually looks GOOD.

Droid 1 is also AOSP, it even has froyo!

Yes, because you have so many hardware and software options for iOS and equally as many software options on Windows Phone.

That's your opinion, I find sense too bubbly and big for me, and love the look of stock aosp. It would be nice if manufacturers made their phones work on aosp source as a start, then added their skins on top, but that's a lot to ask, so I don't complain

Fwiw I think AOSP is ugly too

Yes, let's take what I said and willfully distort it.

agreed man, it's all opinions, which is why HTC makes sense lol
if there was a box i could check to switch to stock android or sense, i'll admit i'd give it a whirl. yeah, i'd get sick of it after 2 days (i coudln't run CM7 for longer than 24 hours on my Inc because i couldn't stand AOSP), but i'd still try it out.
Any phone that Cyanogen will support can get "full AOSP"
everyone needs to remember not everyone likes the same things... I prefer sense over asop and that's why i have this phone... I think asop is plain as well and i commend HTC for making Sense as nice it is... no other manufacturer comes close with their own UI
I think AOSP functions better than Sense, that's purely why I like it.
How do you guys like it? I'm still tempted to go bareback and toss sense out. I gave it a shot, awesome job guys, but don't like how it wants to stuff facebook in my face all the time. If there is a way to reorganize the main page I haven't seen it. Ended up nandroiding back to meanbean 3.09 for now. Runs slick as glass. If I download and install the bareback superlte does that include the camera drivers so there is no loss in quality/functionality?
Also what is svn lol. I just downloaded the sense 5 port directly to my phone and flashed it, s-off, but I keep reading Bout svn. Is that update software? With meanbean I just used the ota updater.
Sorry kinda new

I absolutely love it.
I don't use Facebook either, so I froze it using app quarantine from the play store and it doesn't pop up anywhere anymore.
Svn is a way to get the latest updates without having to download the whole file. It downloads only the parts that have been updated reducing download time.
You also get downloads in advance.
Switching main screen is in the pinch on home screen widgets layout. You hold the screen you want selected in that window and drag it to main.
I love sense 5. Smoothest ROM I've ever had, especially with the arc reactor kernel.
I currently also have a 7582 quadrant score because of the ROM.
Turtlesvn is a svn client (I think that's its name) from there follow the thread listed about svn to get it set up.
I will never go back to sense 4.5 or aosp, they are farrrrr behind sense 5 and I know when you get it figured out you will agree.
Have fun!

Also for the camera. Freeze it an app quarantine. Use extrims camera from themes and apps. Gives you sense 4.5 camera back until camera is fully functional.
Also. I haven't tested this as I'm still playing with sense 5 it should work tho

Thanks for the peptalk I need it! Ill wait a few weeks until things get ironed out, maybe try will release sense 5 on their own LOL.

svn is a version control system that developers use to check in their code. It allows other devs to pull the changes down to their machines to make sure they're working with the latest files. The sense 5 repository is public, so anyone can pull down the files needed to flash the rom, but it's still intended more for the developers.

I love Sense 5. Personally, I think it's the best thing to happen to Sense. It feels like Cyanogenmod and HTC had a baby. It's zippy, it's smart, it's gorgeous to look at, and it's simple (For some people, too simple lol http://www.androidcentral.com/htc-sense-5-app-drawer-making-simple-complicated )
Link feed is pretty neat I have to say. I can't wait for a working gallery so I can see in person how the zoe moments work. And I can't wait to see how the devs theme it.

I think it's the best version of sense yet. I hate sense and only used it when I needed to do something that wasn't working in AOSP, AOKP, etc. Sense 5 is actually very handy and flexible. The development of the port seems to be coming along very nicely and my hat's of to all of them!
Also, igotlostintampa has done a kicka$$ job of putting together a great FAQ that has helped me greatly in getting this to be a DD.

Gallery is working.
HTC Zoe is a Camera feature.
I definitely like it. My only complaint is I can't set blink feed as a "middle" panel for a home screen with pages to the left and right of it.

Sense 5 is the first OEM skin I've ever used that I feel is as cohesive and attractive as stock Android. It's better than Touchwiz, better than not-Blur, better than Optimus UI, and most importantly, WAY better than any prior version of Sense. I think I've finally found an AOSP replacement. I was actually planning to buy an Optimus G on eBay and sell this phone, but Sense 5 has convinced me to stick with the Evo. Using Arc Reactor kernel 0.41 (1.7) along with Sense 5, this phone is pretty close to the G performance-wise despite only having 2 CPU cores.

I like it but Im still waiting for a desensed version.
I mostly use nova or chameleon laubcher so I just like it for the pretty menus and functionality lol

I initially said I liked Sense 5, but have since changed my mind. I don't like the blink feed being forced on me. I can't remove it nor can I change what page it is. I feel as if HTC just watered Sense down. It is very light. Not so much a UI anymore, buy more of a skin or theme similar to Touchwiz. I know this move will be praised by some, but if you're a fan of Sense, you might be disappointed as I am. I like the Sense widgets. Now they are either watered down to look more AOSP or simply gone. No HTC bookmarks, no HTC Music. Calendar looks weak. I keep flashing the newest daily in an attempt to like it (as this is the future) but I keep coming back to my nandroid. I give the Devs all the respect in the world and this rant is in no way a reflection of my thoughts to their hard work to bring the port to us. I'm grateful to have the ability to try it.

I completely agree about the widgets. They look like crap. Blinkfeed you can edit to exclude a bunch of junk. Back on the widgets, gonna buy android pro widgets, I need the agenda view on the calendar widget

OK. Back to AOKP for me. Tried it for about 2hrs to check it out, and the devs have done an amazing job, but sense is still painful compared to AOKP to me. HTC did do better with multitasking, a lot (unless it was the wicked xda devs that fixed that). Still, sense is too blocky and in my face for me to use.
That said, there were a few cool new features, like if you have a contact that is Google and Facebook , sense gives you option to pick which icon pic. Cool, but doesn't stand a chance against AOKP/Rootbox/slim bean/CM.
Wish I knew what all the sense users see. Hell, there's not even an email widget (which 4.1.2+ has now).

If you got the Bluetooth fix hit me up

I want to move AOSP full time but I can never get mms, mms over WiFi and gps to work as well as sense can.
I love the theme chooser and wish I knew had to port some of those themes over to sense. Much more involved than doing an image replacement in winrar.
