[Q] ext4 formatting utility - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What is the advantage of navenedrob's ext4 formating utility? When should it be used, ie before or after a Rom is flashed with CWM? After an ODIN flash?

I use it every time I flash a rom ...its very useful I recommend it

Basically it's just a deeper wipe than the standard set. It does a complete reformat. You should do it before flashing the ROM, at the same point you would normally wipe data, cache, and dalvik.

Does that hold with flashing CWM or ODIN?

Help unrooting

I just flashed my stock kernel and CWM and Superuser are still there to my surprise, i tried doing this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501719 but i do not have an external SD card to put the files onto. I'm just worried incase i need to take it into Samsung for some reason. Thanks:good:
Did you do a full wipe? And wipe dalvic cache! Then try again to flash the official ics firmware.

Guys please help - ROM flashing issues

Weird problem with my phone chaps, can you please help?
I can flash CM9 & CM10 with no issues. I can flash it via restore (CWM) or through a wipe.
I can flash CheckROM V4 Via ODIN with no issues, but I am unable to flash anything I download through the kitchen. I get a bootloop or it gets stuck at the Boot up Samsung logo.
Similarly, I am unable to flash any other ROM apart from CM9/CM10 via recovery. It gets stuck at the boot logo. I've wiped all the caches, and even tried to flash checkrom via Odin to see if this resolves the issues, but unfortunately not.
Is this a case of flashing an original Samsung ROM, then re-rooting and starting over?
I will be grateful if anyone can offer some assistance!
Are you doing a full wipe factory reset in recovery before flashing a ROM? you mentioned you wiped cache thats it

Maybe Megawipe or Superwipe script can help. You can try it if you haven't gone with flashing original firmware.

You have to use cwm to restore. As posted above you might need to root.

Probably a corrupted sdcard, save important files to the pc and format the card from the phone. Place the files back, see if you are rooted and if not reroot with CF-Root and try again. Do not superwipe this time.Just do data/factory reset, wipe cache and dalvik cache and format system and data in mounts and storage.
Hello, sorry for reviving this old thread, but it seems that this would be a logical place to ask if it's recommended to do a super wipe before every non stock ROM flash.

No. Just wipe data, cache, dalvick, and format system.

[Q] About recovery.

Now I have got two questions: First, should I flash a ROM with xRecovery, or CWM? Second, what order do I need to wipe data, dalvik-cache, cache partition?

The recovery version doesn't really matter. For stock kernel both xrec and cwm are available (I recommend xrec), but the nAa custom kernels all have cwm preinstalled.
The order of wiping data, dalvik-cache and cache partition doesn't matter at all, pick whatever you want .

i prefer using CWM.. just go for CWM.. or use both?
wipe data, dalvik-cache, cache partition b4 and after flashing any custom rom once..
make sure u hv the correct kernel for the rom..

[Q] Do these WIPE the internal memory??

Hey!
simple question!
which of these measures wipe the INTERNAL memory? ((T or F))
- Stock ROM from ODIN
- Stock ROM from ODIN with PIT repartition
- Wipe Data/Catch
- Custom Recovery (CWM/TWRP?)
- Custom Kernel
And thanks in advance.

1 Stock ROM from ODIN: depends on in which ROM you are, you you are in any other tom than official than you need to wipe after flashing else you will be stuck in bootloop
2 Stock ROM from ODIN with PIT repartition: wipes everything because you are re-partitioning the internal memory.
3 Wipe Data/Cache: will wipe you data and cache both
4 Custom Recovery (CWM/TWRP?) if you mean flashing custom recovery than the answer is no, it won't wipe anything..
5 Custom Kernel: It too wont wipe anything..
I hope you have got all of your answers..

Depends if u are on stock or custom recovery. The stock recovery will delete everything. Custom recoveries will not delete ur music, dcim, pictures, download folders.
