[Q] Which apps should not be moved to SD? - Optimus One, P500, V General

Hi all,
With the stock LG ROM, apps which should not be moved to SD had the 'move to SD' option grayed out. With Mik's CM7 though, all apps can seemingly be moved to SD. I understand that some apps need to be on the internal memory to function correctly. How can I determine which apps can be moved safely and which cannot?
Thanks!

Apps that has widget. And UI apps.

Widgets, themes, keyboards, and launchers should be kept in internal.

apps that interferes with android system (keyboards, launchers, settings ...) should be in internal storage and the rest (mainly spacey games) can be freely moved to SD

It is better not to move the apps like Facebook, Twitter, Gmail, Yahoo! Mail to the SD Card. For two reasons: 1. Their widgets will not work. 2. After you reboot your phone, your sync accounts will vanish from the "Accounts & Sync" menu and you would need to add them again.
I'm not completely sure whether the 2nd point happens to everybody, but it happens to me all the time

Apps2sd on Froyo

Most of us are somewhat familiar with how apps2sd works on Froyo. It does not use a sd card partition like the ones we are used to. All system apps, apps you run widgets from, homelaunchers, etc need to be saved on internal memory (you don't have a choice with the system apps) to avoid errors when you reboot or connect via usb. Since the apps are physically located on the sd they become unmounted when the sd card is no longer mounted.
What I'm curious of is where the apps are saved on the sd? I imagine they would save to a hidden file. If this is the case, is it possible to manually move system apps with root explorer or adb commands from internal to the sd card? Obviously, you wouldn't want to move anything crucial to the boot or remount but apps such as e-mail and maps (memory hogs)?
I've noticed when moving apps to the sd from internal that only about half of the file size is actually moved. So does this mean my above question is impossible?
Does anyone REALLY understand how apps2sd works on Froyo?
Is it possible to install another apps2sd (one that allows an sd partition)?

All you need to do to move apps manually to sd is from home go menu> settings> applications> manage applications, then you can select the app you want to move and select move to sd. This works for any app. If the "move to sd" button is grayed, make sure you check the box in "cyanogenmod settings" to allow moving any app to sd.

I get an error moving system apps even with the Cynogen setting on. I'm on KaosFroyo v24. Which one are you on?

When using froyo apps2sd you cant have an EXT partition on your SD card also if that isnt the issue check the space on your SD card, also turn on both "save to" settings in Cyanogen Settings to external and also in the applications settings

He's talking about System apps. What that specifically means I do not know, but I know trying to move say Facebook to the SD card gets an error message stating System updates cannot be installed on external media. All other apps (outside these system apps: Facebook, Maps, etc) can be moved without problem.

Thats what I meant. Thanks for clearing that up.
So I was thinking, maybe we can get around this. What if we delete the file for whatever system app (we'll say FB for this example) and re-download it from the market (or install from a file on your sd card). Would it still be a system app? Could we then save it to the sd?
I think I'm going to try it. I'll report success or failure.

SUCCESS! Using root explorer, I moved the facebook files located in system/app and data/app to my sd card. I then used linda manager and installed facebook.apk. I opened the app and all seems well. I then went into manage applications in settings and moved it to the sd card.
I'm going to do some more testing and post a new thread for guys like me who can't have TOO MUCH free internal memory.

[Q] App Icons Keep Moving

Hi All,
In the Applications screen, I have arranged the icons there but after reboot or disconnecting from PC, my icons rearranges themselves.
I have searched and in xda-dev, only one guy has posted the same problem in xperia mini:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=998357
I don't have any SD card inserted so I'm not sure why.. (I've seen discussions that apps moved to SD card will make their icons run around)
Can anybody please assist?
Running Android 2.3.4, GINGERBREAD.UHKG7
Thanks!
Mine also does the same
Unfortunately I don't find any solution yet

I use AppZorter to put the apps in alphabetical order
Genius and saves me alot of time trying to move countless icons to different pages whilst trying to get them in order ... Only for somd of them to move on reboot.

hi chrisjcks,
thanks for your feedback but I don't want to arrange it alphabetically.
I want to sort it by my preference which would be in pages: apps, games, settings+mod, etc.
You can create folders and move your apps into them. I do it, the folders keep arranged as I pleced them. The apps inside, however, keep re-sorting as before. But if you have small folders, it's much better as if all apps are in a complete mess as it's without having folders.
Hi skr68,
yes i understand about the folders but it's sad having to create folders when we can have as many apps pages as we want..
can anybody else assist in advicing how to stop the icons moving around?
i'm currently using other launcher but it will not allow pages to be not full..
go to settings > applications > manage applications and the "on SD card" tab
the galaxy s2 partitions its internal memory in 2gb of ROM and the rest as an sdcard, so whether you have an external sdcard inserted or not, apps might still be being installed on the "sdcard"
have a look and see if any are ticked, open them and move them to the phone memory and see if the issue persists
Well, that might not *quite* be what he wanted to know...
We are talking about the icons here, not app installation paths.

Yes it the only thing I don't like about Touchwiz, You will have to use a 3rd party launcher like launcher plus or ADW launcher if you want that feature.
hi viva.fidel,
yes there are items listed "On SD Card" but they are not ticked - i opened them and the option is to move to SD card, no option to move to phone memory..any further advice?
Thanks!
hi jhernand1102,
i don't think it's limited to touchwiz, you can see the same problem with xperia mini at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=998357
hi, any help?
I think what is being said is that apps on SD are displayed after others because it needs to mount and scan at boot time, this is what is killing the order in the launcher.
What I really want to figure out is if there is some way I can modify the touchwiz launcher to always arrange alphabetically.

hi alias_neo,
yes i understand that but i don't have any sd card installed and if you see post ten, none of the apps "on sd card" is ticked too..
anyway, gave up and decided to use after market launchers..currently using GO Launcher
I'm running KG6 on a SGS2 and I was also having this problem. I found a solution though.
1. Install AppZorter Lite from the Android Marketplace.
2. Open AppZorter and select 'Settings'.
3. Select 'Advanced settings'.
4. Select 'Recover application menu'.
This will reset the application menu on the home screen and the icons in the app draw.
5. Move applications to your desired locations in the app draw.
6. Restart and enjoy app icons where you want them to be.
@ _Sledz_
thanks for the valuable input!

A simple solution would be to use adw free or paid. You can make catalogs and sort your apps as you want.
However touchwiz does not have any such features except moving apps around and making folders
app icons keep moving
my app icons keep moving around after I place them where I want them too. Probably the most annoying thing I've discovered about this phone.
Infuse 4G

worked for me

Is it safe to move apps to SD?

Hi,
I have a 32G SD card in my TS and was wondering if it is safe to use an app like this:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.a0soft.gphone.app2sd
To move apps to the SD card to free up some space?
Any downsides to doing this?
Also, is the above app the right choice or is there a better app?
Thanks,
D.

I've used the Rom Toolkit from Casual Operative for it and so far the only problem I've had is I needed to move my preferred keyboard back to the phone for it to stay selected as the default, and Enhanced Email back for it to remember my work email account (at least, I think that's the culprit...I just moved that back over just now). The other caveats I know of are you can't move over apps that supply widgets you're using or apps that are system apps, and if you reflash while you have apps on the SD they end up still there but without the phone knowing about them (wasted space).

Android apps taking up 4gb of internal sd card memory. How can I see which APPS take

the most space?
Also which apps can't I for sure move to sd card? I remember trying this with chrome and it didn't work. Any other apps or rules to keep in mind?
I don't think of Chrome as a system app but I still couldn't move it
A little cumbersome, but just going into the Application Manager in Settings will show you how much the apps take up when you click on them individually. I don't know of a separate app that does this... There are plenty to analyze your internal and external storages but not specific to app storage usage. But Chrome is typically installed from the factory so would be a system app. When you update, it places most of the data in the /data partition, but still considered a system app. Chrome and Facebook are 2 apps that take up a ton of space typically.

How to move apps from Internal Storage to SD Card

I just stumbled upon it and I though it might be useful. In order to move an app from your phone's internal storage to your SD card, you just need to
1) open Settings -> Apps
2) Tap on an app
3) Tap on Storage
4) Tap Change
5) Tap SD card
PS: Obviously apps will take more time to open (the delay is noticable in facebook).

You don't even need to do that. Just long press any app then >app info>storage etc...

Welcome to Android! :silly:
And for anyone tempted to try, the onboard 64 gig is far faster than any SD card you can currently buy. Many apps will run poorly, if at all. Moving apps to the SD card should be an absolute last resort, right after you've figured out which apps you really didn't need in the first place.

I tend to agree, I moved a much of apps to my SD now things run much slower I regret doing so.
Moving apps to SD is soooo kit kat....
Depends on what apps you moved i guess.
Ive notified NO CHANGE on the apps ive moved. WhatsApp is on the SSD card and behaves just as it did on internal.
Let's see.. samsung internet , Firefox, textra, all amazon apps, google drive, instagram, Snapchat, outlook, pandora, OneDrive...
NO DIFFERENCE at all.
Now there was one app, samsung gear 360, it did NOT like to be on storage card (kept force closing even though i was not using it when this was happening) so i moved it back to internal.
Also not ALL of the apps data is moved to the SD card. Some data of the app still lives on the SD.
EDIT: i dont use crackbook aka Facebook, so i cant speak on that, but i use WhatsApp, for example, and it opens up normally. No lag. None of the apps i moved are behaving out of normal. Again this is dependent on other factors, but in my daily use environment i dont notice any lag.
I also dont use the memory and storage optimizer (killing apps in the background from running)...
The internal storage is faster than sd unless you can find one of their new faster sd cards...if you move a lot of apps you may see performance loss...
