Just wondering what can be done with the full size USB port. I've connected two cameras and my Droid X too it and none were recognized as mass storage devices. The only use I have found for it so far is that it can charge my phone. I would love to be able to be able plug in my camera (Sony, not SD card) and dump them on to it where ever I am for editing or uploading.
Thanks
Keyboards usually work right out of the box, so that can be a nice feature. Also, I think hard drives can be hooked up, but the tablet can't really power them, so they have to be connected via a powered hub. I think thumb drives/flash drives work as well, but I haven't tried them.
For me, being able to easily get a cheap, generic keyboard working has been a very nice feature of the tablet.
I believe I recall reading that you can use it for USB GPS receivers as well. I have not tried it myself.
ahhh a Keyboard, that would be a nice addition. Now that I think about it I am going to see if my bluetooth keyboard will work (don't have a USB one)
GPS is something I am missing more than I would have expected on a tablet
I have a 32gb thumb drive that works perfect. In fact, I have 5 thumb drives all with different data on them ranging from documents to videos.

That is what I use it for as well.
Anyone had success making USB controllers work for emulators? Seen the wiimote bluetooth setup, but I don't have a wiimote.

Interesting someone said that the USB port cant power usb devices, i connected my bluetooth gps to my usb port yesterday to see if it would power the gps, it did, so im not sure why we would think it does not power usb devices, as mine seems to be working fine.
Im setting my gtab up in my car and wanted to know if id need a second power souce for both the gtab and the gps. Seems to gtab will provide power to the bt gps ok.

It's not guaranteed to power them. Some 2.5" external drives and devices take a bit more than 1 USB slot can handle, even on laptops. Ever had a 2.5" external drive that randomly shows up or pops up then disappears? Also, ever seen a mini usb cable with 2 male USB connections? That's so that if the drive has issues using 1 port, you can plug another in and your devices will work. Even some flash drives at high capacity+speed may give trouble. There's def. the propensity for other usb devices to behave that way as well. Keyboards generally don't have that problem unless they're advanced (have lights, usb ports/hub on them), also mice don't generally have that issue either but anything else can.
What can work?
I'll say more than likely any powered external hard drive.
Some USB powered 2.5" external hard drives (my 320GB is seen and is usable, my 40GB is not as it is older and requires more power).
Most flash drives.
More than likely, any usb device engineered to worth within the constraints of using a single usb port (wireless controllers, remotes, mice, some keyboards, some gps units, etc.)
What probably won't work?
High capacity, high speed or OLD 2.5" usb powered external hard drive (750-1TB)
Advanced devices with a usb hub on them or lots of lights or moving parts, powered solely by the usb port
High capacity, high speed flash drives (though I'm sure this is vendor specific)
Interesting, so low powered devices will be usable, but not high powered ones, thats fair enough, both my bt gps and my fm transmitter seem to be working fine.
Ive ordered a 4 port usb hub which i planned to use to connect both the gps and the fm transmitter to the usb port to give them power, no biggie if it isnt able to do that, as i can use the hub elsewhere, but be interested now to see if it will work. Thanks for the heads up.

I also have an 'official Malata' USB to ethernet on the way for review to see if I can get it to work and see if there would be any interest for us in the States. I should have the demo today and will report back any findings?
IT2STEVE, I think you'll have takers on that USB->Ethernet adapter. I still stay at one hotel when traveling for work that does not have wireless (though most do). And sometimes at work, the wireless flakes out. This would be nice to have.

Have you tried tethering to your phone? I used my MyTouch 4g hotspot feature at two diners this past weekend and it worked well.
Wondering about the usb nic driver, is it provided with the usb nic ? or do we need someone to develop one ? Ive had a quick look on ebay and can see a few of these available, naturally none of them are official Malata' USB to ethernet. so that raises the question of using none Malata ones ?
I use it for a flash drive too.
The issue is that I copied mp3 from the flash drive to the g-tab..and when I use File Explorer I can see and play the songs, but in the Music app they dont show up.
320 external hard drive
Hello. I am looking to buy a 320 GB hard drive for my gtab. I am wanting to buy the Western Digital My passport essential. Do you think this will work with the USB on this device? It is usb powered. Thanks.
the tab usb will not power a standard hd
Anybody ever tried a USB TV Receiver? I'm doubting it would work, but would be cool...
I was looking to use the usb port to load pictures from my camera's sd cards via a card reader onto the tablet when I travel. Saves me from taking my laptop with me. I can do everything I need with a smaller device like a tablet now. (Might have to save them back on a flashdrive though in case the Gtab decides to delete your pictures...)
And I guess you can always use the the port for your USB Pet Rock. (thinkgeek.com/geektoys/cubegoodies/c208)

This poster says their 320 GB hard drive is powered by it. So will the 320 GB western digital essentials be powered by it?
Is it possible to connect galaxy s2 and HDTV with hdmi (mhl) adapter and at the same time use the wireless (but not bluetooth) mouse and keyboard connected to galaxy s2?
(i want to use my internet connection on galaxy s2 and browse the web with mouse and keyboard, all that on the TV)
I manage to do this separately, either Full HD via MHL adapter, or using both mouse and keyboard via Micro USB to USB converter and dongle for wireless connection. Dont know how to combine those together though.
I think that bluetooth mouse and keyboard would work, but would like to know about mentioned method.
Maybe self powered USB would help?
thx
Wireless mouse and keyboard will obviously require a USB dongle to receive, so I seriously doubt that you can do this. It's not often that you get a mobile device that is capable of being a USB host, so I find it very doubtful that you could plug multiple USB devices into it at the same time.
I know you said you don't want bluetooth, but I really, REALLY believe that this won't be possible any other way.

So for those of us who can't get our hands on the USB connector kit, I was thinking of a possible workaround.
Using the stock USB cable, would it be possible to use a USB female to female connector? Or for controllers like the PS3, a USB to mini USB adapter?
No. It was tested and it doesn't work. I tested it myself on my original transformer.
What do you need a USB connection for?
I am not trying to start an argument but if you are straight up looking to transfer files to a PC, Dropbox on WiFi is nearly as fast as a USB connection for most average-sized files and is far more convenient to use.
You could also make use of the 8GB Asus gives you in the "My Cloud" app which also works pretty well.

He might need it for peripherals -- like connecting a gamepad or mouse to the TF Prime.
That said, yes, there is circuitry required for the USB connector/host feature, so you can't just use a "dumb" cable to get support.
I was wondering how do you go around to surf the internet on your big screen tv and also use an external usb mouse/keyboard?
I would need a "Micro USB Host Mode Cable" to hook the mouse/keyboard to the phone AND I also have to use a "MHL Adapter Micro USB To HDMI Converter" to see the phone in the tv and both use the one and only usb micro from the phone... Is anyone using a usb hub with usb micro to usb micro connections? Has anyone tried to use a regular usb hub to connect more than one usb device? Do you need to be rooted to do this?
I guess one option is to find a bluetooth keyboard/mouse but that seems to be expensive...
Thanks!
I know that most people us the MHL adapter for hdmi and bluetooth for keyboard and mouse.
Is there a list anywhere as far as which bluetooth mouse/keyboard works fine? I hate to go that route since I will be using the phone this way at both home and work. I dont really want to be hauling the keyboard/mouse back and forth. At least if I could connect using the usb I could use bluetooth on one place and usb in the other....
Anyway, if you can point me out to where there is a list I will appreciate it...
I still like to hear if anyone is doing this just using usb...
Anyone knows a list of proven bluetooth keyboards/mouse?
Guess not.

I bought this keyboard and mouse and it works great. You can buy it for $44 shipped (they will accept your offer).
Multi-touch is a no go, but it is still pretty slick.

I can't get my transformer prime to work with a generic ebay wireless mouse. It works fine in windows, shows up in device manager as HID-compliant mouse. But in the transformer prime I get no input. The same happens to a wired GE mouse. But logitech mice work fine, I tried a wired G5 and a wireless mini mouse my friend was using with his laptop before.
Also, with the USB Host Controller app it's detected as SINO WEALTH SINO WEALTH
Btw, this isn't the only time I'm having trouble with the usb. I have a 32gb flash drive that won't mount when plugged in, while my other flash drives work fine. But when I test a friend's drive too, sometimes it won't work. I somehow got the 32gb drive working once when playing around with some usb apps from the market, but after disconnecting I couldn't do it again.
Never had a problem connecting a mouse to my prime dock and using it, used lots of different mice however most of my mice are logitec (like the brand, good CS keeps me coming back)
Its my experience with knockoff ebay perifials that they use firmware that "just barely works" with windows and has very limited compatability. Every mouse i have bought from a store has worked, no problem... Perhaps when you buy your next mouse you can take your prime with you to check compatability
Aside from that not sure what to tell you. The prime has generic USB drivers, you can try finding a driver for your mouse for linux and porting it over but since its a ebay special i dont think thats going to work.
Only other thing i can think of is buy a new mouse and make sure it works before handing over the money
Good luck! Let us know if you find a fix!
I also tried a wired GE mouse. This one. Neither work, but they do get detected from the USB Host App. It's weird that even some flash drives do not work. I'll see what I can do.
I'm using wireless Logitech G700 and it's perfect!
works without issue, scroll wheel, extra buttons, just as on Windows.
The only issue I have with it is that on Windows I was able to remove the "acceleration" of the mouse pointer speed, but on Android there is no such option.
