Unhappy*[Q] Villain Rom Error (not signed)_________________________________________
hi guys
i'm trying to install the villain rom on my sgs 2 (got it yesterday so nothing is modified except for the rooting)... now i've rooted the phone and i can start into the loader-thingy (with power, vol down and home)... but when i go to the option update from sd it tells me there's an error and the rom isn't signed...
now, i've tried it with and without whiping the phone but it still doesn't work.
i haven't renamed the villain rom file or anything...
can someone tell me what i need to do to flash the rom or how to make this error go away.
sorry, for my not-nerdie lingo but i was an iphone user from gen 1 til iphone 4...
thanks you so much for your help!

simple..
when u goto recovery -> install from sd--> there u see a option called signed/unsigned-> select it.. there u can enable or disable... once done.. come back .. goto sd and flash it...
*Press Thanks Button if it helps U*
In recovery you need to select install zip from sd card. Definitely not UPDATE.ZIP then this should work. Shouldnt have to toggle signature checking i dont think.

We always sign our zips!!!!!
You will never need to use "flash update.zip" always use "install zip from sd" in cwm.
hmmmmm... i don't see any of those options...
i see the following:
android system recovery <3e>
enter Ok key, select: vol up/ vol down
reboot system now
apply update from sdcard
wipe data/ factory reset
wipe cache partition
so i chose apply update from sdcard
then i mark villainRom-1.4.0.signed.zip
then
install / sdcard
finding update package...
opening update package...
veryfying update package..
e: signature verification failed
installation aborted.
????
You sure its 3e not 2e .You are looking for >>> choose zip .
What colour is the recovery ??
Why not flash 4e rom .
Its your recovery that is wrong not the rom .
jje
nope, it says <3e>, the revovery menu is all in blue and the status messages are yellow...
there's no option "choose zip"
and what is 4e rom?
very sorry, it's all new to me... the last time i flashed roms was with win mobile about 10 years ago...
and where can i get this 4e?
aaaaaaaaaa....i'm so incredibly confused... :-s
ok, i think i found the problem.... i have the stock kernel...or whatever it is called. damn...!
so basically i need to flash/ install the CWM thingy... i'll try that when i get back home!
thanks anyway to all of you who have replied!!
Look for chainfire's cf root kernel kf2. It includes the latest 4.0. 0... recovery. All you do is flash the file via ODIN (1. 85) as pda. Look for that thread and it tells you how to do it.

CWM/ClockworkMod is a recovery. CF-Root includes it.

Hey everyone, first post!
Before I begin, I should tell you that I have tried the search function, but it is currently down.
I'm having an issue flashing the latest Villianrom to my phone Which I read about and downloaded here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1198334
I followed these instructions to update my phone: http://androidadvices.com/how-to-up...ii-i9100-to-gingerbread-xwkdd-2-3-3-firmware/
Then followed these instructions on how to root: http://androidadvices.com/how-to-root-samsung-galaxy-s-2-i9100-tutorial/
Everything seems to have gone well, aside from the yellow yield symbol displayed on startup. I have downloaded Rom Manager from the market, pushed the 'flash ClockworkMod Recovery' option, and that seems to have gone smoothly as well.
Here is where the problem comes...when I go to 'Install ROM fromSD Card' I scroll down and select VillianROM-2.4.2-signed.zip. I check the boxes marked 'Backup Existing ROM', 'Wipe Data and Cache', and 'Wipe Dalvik Cache'. From there it wants to Reboot and Install, saying press ok to reboot into clockwork mod recovery and continue you the installation.
The phone reboots, and I'm getting an E:failed to verify whole-file signature and an E:signature verification failed installation aborted.
Does anyone have any idea why this is happening? What have I done wrong?
Some basic info:
Phone - Samsung Galaxy S II
Carrier - Bell
Android version - 2.3.3
Baseband version - I9100XXKDH
Kernel Version - 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKDD-CL161513 [email protected] #2
Build number - Gingerbread.xwkdd
Upon further reading it seems I haven't been booting into CWM recovery...please disregard and close this post
Good job finding the answer by reading
Just an FYI, rom manager wont work with most CWM kernels (only codeworxs), and you also cant flash CWM via rom manager (it just does a fake flash). (Go cf-root in cause you didn't work it out)
Get odin for pc
Flash the cf-root kernel (or whatever kernel you want that also includes Clockwork recovery)
Then enter recovery mode on your phone, and flash the villain rom zip file from within recovery.
--
You are getting verification errors because you dont have clockworkmod recovery - you have default 3e recovery)
Ditch rom manager and follow my steps above.
Read up and learn before flashing/installing anything.

I know mate - I meant no disrespect. Was just funny. I try very hard these days to make sure I've read everything before posting. There's been times where I've gone off on one only to find out that I'd totally got the wrong end of the stick through not reading!

Hello everybody,
First I'd like to thank to community for the hard work. I v read a countless amount of pages of this forum and I can't even imagine the time people spent helping on issues or writing tutorials.
So thank you if you re up to spend few minutes on my specific case (and sorry for the bad english).
Here is my device and the different version of kernel ...
1/ Rooting my device (tutorial in french translated from xda)
http://www.cnetfrance.fr/produits/guide-rooter-son-galaxy-s2-39763841.htm
S-Root version used: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125414
Everything went pretty well when I rooted the GS2. I got the Superuser app so i figure it's ok.
I just used a modified kernel found on xda who was corresponding the my base band version (just the PDA in Odin).
2/ Installing a new ROM (Cyanogenmod by Rom Manager)
I followed : http://www.redmondpie.com/install-cm7-on-galaxy-s2-using-rom-manager-how-to-tutorial/ and http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S_II:_Full_Update_Guide (official guide) using Rom Manager premium.
When i tried to reboot in Recovery (manually or with Rom Manager), i can't find the "Install the zip" option, I have 4 available: "Update from the zip", the 2 wiping/delete options and the reboot.
So obviously if i try to wipe files, wipe the cache then to update with the zip I have the following Error:
E: failed to verify whole-file signature
Do you have any idea what went wrong in the process ?
Should i flash the phone withOdin and change my base band version to another one ?
For info, I did the Permission Fix option in Rom Manager too. Didnt help.
Thanks a lot.
U need clockworkmod instaled first..

You didn't install ClockworkMod Recovery.
Thanks for theses answers but I think I installed it with Rom Manager and i flashed it to the last version.

When i reboot in recovery mode here is the only options available (and it's the problem i pointed out) :

Maybe a problem with my SD card ?

As we've already said, you haven't installed CWM Recovery. You see at the top of your second photo where it says "Android system recovery (3e)"? That's stock recovery.
you can't install CWM recovery thru ROM manager.
just flash the CF Root Kernel for KI4 thru ODIN , you will have CWM recovery.
Hmm I understand about the CWM version I'm booting with, but as you can see on the first capture, my kernel version is a modified one i got after using Odin (puting this Kernel : GT-I9100_XXKI4_insecure.tar from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1101671).
I got the root access by S2 Root.
Ok I think I installed only the Kernel and not CF Root available here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
I ll try to redo Odin and stuff and let you know if I'm still alive.
So it's not great right now. I have installed CF Root with Odin, so I had CWM on my phone (I could see the application). Then after reboot with CWM Recovery and installing Cyanogenmod, the phone doesnt want to start anymore.....
I tried to apply the insecure kernel again with Odin but still impossible to download. I'm stuck on the screen with the yellow sign and written Galaxy S2.
HALP !!
I just tried to put back the official firware version : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278 and put it in my phone with Odin.
Ok, I dont have the yellow sign anywore but the phone is still stuck on the boot screen (where it's written Samsung GALAXY s II)...
What should I try ?
I'm still able to boot with CWM recovery but I didn't make any backup and nothing work.
Do you think the phone is dead ?
5 posts in a row?
So, just to clarify, you've tried to install CM7, which amongst other things tells you to do a nandroid backup, and also to flash twice in succession. Did you do either of these things? The instructions are there to be followed, don't just ignore them.
Ok my bad I didn't backup anything because I had no data to backup. This was maybe a bad move...
Anyway, I tried to flash it twice yes. Right now, i'm working with a modified Kernel (with CF Root), and booting in CWM Recovery. When I want to flash again by installing from the .zip I get a Satus 7 Error.
In CWM, every advanced options are apparently available but I dont know anything about them.
And just so you know, on my SD Card i have 1 update.zip and the update-cm-7.1.0-Galaxys2.... .zip from Cyanogen.

Flash a stock rom with Odin and then root your phone again. Start reading and follow procedures when you want to flash custom roms again .See Intratechs`s thread for a stock rom
Thanks for your reply.
I did it, it didn't work, I mean i could flash with Odin but the reboot doesn't work : the start screen appeared without the yellow sign, but it's stuck on it.
--- update
FYI, I installed Rom Manager yesterday, it way interact in a bad way with CWM Recovery.
For now i can mount USB by CWM Recovery but cannot do anything else.
If you have a method to clean completely the phone ? Maybe the bootloader is broken...

I re partitionned my SD Card with Odin and tried to install a new stock ROM. Everything pass with Odin but to finalize the set up (while reboot), I got some errors and still the same problem during the boot. It's stuck !
I installed a insecure Kernel so I can access CWM Recovery but still stuck and now I can't mount anything .

Hello everyone at XDA, Today i have an issue with my Galaxy Ace. I decided to upgrade my Galaxy Ace at version 2.3.4 (Rooted) to this CyanogenMod i found today @http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1490867.
So, after placing the custom rom into my sdcard, i booted my phone into recovery mode and pressed the update option. It seemed to update normally. After the installation was completed, the phone rebooted and after the normal Galaxy Ace startup, Instead of the Samsung logo flashing, It showed a word "ANDROID" with spaces in between and in Times New Roman. Then, after 10 minutes, it was still at that same black screen with the "ANDROID". Then, i tried going into recovery mode and i tried to factory reset it, it showed
"E: format_volume : rfs format failed on /dev/stl13
Formatting /cache...
E: format volume: rfs format failed on /dev/stl14
Data wipe complete."
Then, i tried rebooting the phone. The same thing appeared.
So, Can anyone help me PLEASE?
PS, I can still access my Download Mode, Recovery Mode and Dump mode.
Also, im a noob at this, can someone post a detailed tutorial or something helpful? Will give thanks and $$$ if it worked

But i have the zip on the root of the sdcard though.

U need to use clockwork mod recovery 5.0.2.6 to flash cm roms. Older 4.0.0.9 might not work. And do format data/factory reset prior flashing

The Only Problem you have is that you dont have CWM Recovery Installed on your PHone. You need it for flashing custom ROMs on the phone. Get the latest version in the Forums and flash it via the instructions given.
Then try Reflashing the ROM.
How am i supposed to install CWM when my phone cannot start up?
Also, i cannot factory reset using recovery mode, If that is possible, How do i connect my phone to the computer using recovery/dump/download mode?
If you don't have the CWM recovery zip in your sd card, paste it. (By Card Reader) Or if you've got it, go into recovery mode and just flash that zip. [Install zip - Choose zip - Select]
After which you can flash CM7

Boot the phone into recovery mode
Flash the CWM file that you said is already on the phone
Reboot the phone into recovery mode again - this time it should load CWM recovery instead of stock Samsung.
Select to do a Factory Reset and repeat again
Select to Clear Cache and repeat again
Go to Advance Menu and select to Clear Dalvik Cache
Return to the Main Menu
Select to install zip from SD Card NOT INSTALL UPDATE.ZIP
Browse to your new ROM and install
Reboot the phone and hopefully it will boot up.
If not, I suggest you go to samfirmware.com and find a stock ROM for your phone and flash it with Odin by following a guide which you can find easily here or on Google... there's even Video Guides on YouTube so you don't have to read anything.

Hi everybody. I'm from Italy.
I open this thread because i can't post in correct zone of this forum.
I havo some question about the rom HD revolution.
Is compatible with every original firmware installed?
The step to flash are:
Download ROM and place it on your virtual SD card
Download "Super Wipe" script & place it on your SD card (optionally if coming from earlier version of my ROM, obligatory if coming from stock or other custom ROM)
Flash boot.img from the downloads section
Boot your phone in recovery mode (vol up + home + power)
In main menu, select "install zip from sdcard"
Select "choose zip from sdcard" and browse to the location of "Super Wipe" script
Once again select "choose zip from sdcard" and browse to the location of Android Revolution ROM
After flashing process is complete, reboot the device
They're correct with new phone?

Samsung needs no boot.img only htc.
Just place the HD rom and the superwipe script on your external sd card. Flash superwipe script and than the hd rom. Done.
So, i din't need "root" privileges?
The recovery mode is accessibly with default rom and no previously mod?
This firmware, if i understand, is full, so there's no problem abount language and version of original firmware installed?
This firmware has italian language?
You need to have clockwork recovery to install the custom rom.
Just flash the correct CF rooting via odin and you will have everything you need. Thankfully Samsung don't do ****ty semi-unlocked bootloaders, which means once you're rooted you can pretty much do everything directly via your phone

I use Odin Multi Downloader v4.34
The data partition not formating would be a cause for concern, if I was you I would try formating it with ClockWorkMod by doing a data wipe/factory reset.
If it was me I would use my computer to put CyanogenMod 7.2 .zip file on the SD (its stable and handy for getting things working)
Most stock ROMS won't flash through CWM.
So to summerise I would try this:
Go into download mode.
Link up with Odin and select your OPS file (make sure GTI5500 OR 5503 appears at top and not the word Android)
Select "One Package" in Odin options
Download a .zip of Clockworkmod for galaxy 5
select it as the One Package and don't touch the other boxes...
let clockworkmod flash into the phone and let it boot into it
now try the data wipe in clockworkmod
install the cyanogenmod zip from the sd and reboot
good luck
I've attached my Clockworkmod Zip file. I use it at least once a week so its good

Yep! There is no key combo for recovery on Galaxy5, if I need to boot recovery and cannot load the rom I just put it in download mode and use odin to reflash clockworkmod, then when its finished it auto boots into cwm and I do whatever I need to
