Long time Sprint user who has been anticipating the new Evo 3D. Well, I received it Wednesday evening via the Premier early release and love how smooth the interface is. WiFi is super fast. It is definitely a great experience utilizing the multimedia aspect of this phone. Spiderman was pretty cool, but haven't really played with 3D yet.
My first call the person on the other end said I sounded a tad hollow. Made a few other calls with no problem besides sounding hollow. I am in San Antonio and 95% of time have pretty good reception. Now in most areas when making calls, the reception goes in and out with the display on the phone corresponding by going dead then back on. Tech support had me perform a hard reset, update my profile with still no fix. They suggested to take to a Sprint repair center and I told them a new phone shouldn't be performing like this. I am pretty bummed as the other aspects of this phone are killer. Any ideas besides replacing with a new one?? Thanks everyone.
Hmm that's weird. I have no suggestions other than to take it to a sprint store. The first call i made, the person on the other end said i call quality was awesome.
Good luck
I'd almost say I'm seeing the same. I had the NS4G for 12 days, before today switching to the e3d. While the NS4g would have a low 1 bar, and terrible wifi, it would hold call quality. Today inside the house, the e3d all calls seem to fade in and out corresponding with bar, and dba. I'm hoping it is something that others are seeing and will be fixed.
Otherwise I guess I still have about 14 days to swap this one out.
No issues here. I talked to my 90 year old grandmother today beside the building generator(while it was running) with no issues. I could hear her fine and she could hear me fine.
lol apparently I roam in my house, according to sprint this area is completely covered, with 3g even.. and I get about 300kbps
about to be regretting paying my ETF
I'm having a similar issue. I used to get 5 bars in my home on my Evo 4G, I get 1 Bar on the 3D. I'm not sure why this is happening, my wife now has my 4G and is getting 5 bars sitting next to me. Maybe I got a bad radio or something.

If you switch back to your previous carrier your ETF would be credited back, if it's T-Mobile you should just get the Sensation 4G..

Did you ever get the phone replaced? My girlfriend's 3d is getting bad or no reception in places where her Hero worked fine. I'm wondering if I need to get it replaced too.
I , too, have bad reception on my EVO3D. My hero used to have good quality. I think it's a bad radio as well.
I took the OTA update. Call quality & reception has been terrific and thats feedback from fellow Sprint pals in addition to AT&T and Verizon users. I am in Columbia, SC where 4G does not exist yet.
Also noticed that my speaker (not speaker phone) volume is much louder after the OTA...

I also took the OTA. Louder speaker volume, no reception issues. I fluctuaute from 4-5 bars. Spouses is the same way.
The only issue that I have is the tunnel effect. People can hear me fine and I can hear them fine, it just sounds like they are far away. Loud, but far away

Finally used the phone after owning it for 5 days. To me, it sounds fine. Of course, had 3 bars of 4G being in NYC.

Have been having issues here in NE MA with horrible 3g, GPS dropping too often and a bad phone signal to the point of not being able to make or receive calls in areas that are marginal...but areas where my EVO always showed 2 bars and worked fine.
In what I would call "strong" signal areas, still had GPS and 3G issues no matter what. What I found with the phone signal is that in these areas, mit works fine, although it fluctuates every few seconds from a full set of bars, to 2 or 0 and then jumps back up again....constantly.
In the "marginal signal" areas where my EVO 4G worked fine and always showed 2 bars, the 3D shows none and won't make or receive a call. What is most perplexing is that even though it is set to "automatic" on the networks, it is not roaming to Verizon...and my buddy taking the ride with me had a full boat signal on his Verizon phone.
I was totally unable to get on the internet in these areas, although I could still send a text.
I don't get it???
Sprint re-provisioned the phone twice, and today a service center wiped and reloaded everything and also claims to have installed a "fifth update" which my phone never got.
My tests were done post upgrade and it did NOTHING to fix these issues.
With your fifth update did you check to see if you had S-OFF? lol
I just sent a reply back to HTC regarding Bluetooth and Roaming data issues and GPS issues... I await their response... However, I may be returning it and going to some other device.
I've found my old Evo3D, and the exchanged one to show 0 bars in places the Evo4G showed 2-3 bars. For the first time in my life, thanks to the Evo3D, I've had a dropped call, and it was in a place the Evo4G gets 2 bars and perfect voice.
Yeah, today at work I missed 3 calls and couldn't read XDA in the bathroom. That was the final straw. I reactivated my 4G, did some tests...and...well...the 3D has gone back home. Perhaps just for now. The 3G radio on that thing sucks. Maybe a radio update will fix it, but I'm not so sure.
Since I'm impatient and have kinda decided to go the Nexus rout from now on I stopped by the sprint store afterwards and did some signal tests with the NexusS4G--which has known 3G reception issues. Well, it had identical bars...that was a good sign, so I dug in a little deeper and it had nearly identical reception as my E4G.
The .3" of screen size will be missed, and it'll be hard to get used to the light weight...but I think tomorrow I'm gunna buy it. Sure, no SD slot, but, 16gb should be pretty damned good...I never did replace my 8gb card, though I did bump the limit a lot. I'm also sure the camera is way better...
...or I'll just wait for the SGS2. I'm not so antsy to get a new phone now after anticipating one so hard and being mostly disappointed. It's funny, the one thing I was the most critical of beforehand ended up being the only thing I'll really miss...the 3D. Lol to that.
Unfortunately I did a stupid thing and traded my EVO 4G in when I "upgraded" to the 3D.
I tried to get Sprint to do a swap....take back the 3D, take away the $150 trade in credit and give me a new or used EVO 4G for the time being and they absolutely refuse to do it without using up my upgrade to get back what I traded in.
Looks like will deal with this phone and return it on day 29, activate my BB Tour (YUCK) and live with that till something reliable comes out hopefully at the end of July or more likely in August.
This sucks.
I am having nearly similar issues. I am dropping calls in area's that have 4-5 bars. I look and when it reconnects it will be down to 0 signal and then back up 4-6 bars. Really odd.
Sad thing is I am coming from ATT and I only have till early next week to decide to stay with sprint or not.
Ohh decisions... not fun and not a good sprint evaluation.
Yeah, I really hope this is something that they can tweak with a radio update. My old Hero got a lot better reception than my Evo 3D.

I can assure you it is not Sprint...it's the phone. I had the same/similar with my 3D...but never with the 4G.
Download Open Signal Maps. It will show you what tower you're connected to. I noticed something similar with my phone (the signal bars fluctuating). I checked Open Signal and lo-and-behold, my phone was tower jumping between 5 different towers in my area... I didn't even know I had 5 different towers in my area.
Ideally, your phone should lock on to the strongest signal in your area and not jump from strong signal to weak signal to slightly-less-weak signal, to strong again... Also, check out this thread:
http://androidforums.com/htc-evo-3d/361044-official-solution-3g-issues-3d.html
This problem doesn't affect everybody. For instance, my brother got a 3d the same day I did, and he's consistently getting 500-700 kbs d/l in the same places I'm getting 11 kbs d/l.

Do ##786# (or 768, not sure). Then click menu key and due a reset. This will also factory reset your device unfortunately. But I was having eh same problems, getting horrid 3gs speeds of around 50 kps. Once I did this my evo3d is constantly getting better 3g speeds than the 4 other evos in my family.
For some reason a lot of the evo 3d did not get the data set up right on one end or another. This seems to fix it.
Looking at that link now. Yes I've had open signal maps installed and I too have noticed that I am jumping between towers "a lot" say every 10-15 seconds or so. And that can be just sitting still in a parking lot and dropping calls :-( Will take a look and glad to hear that it is more with the phone than the actual network. I may have to downgrade to the 4G or NS4G.

Anybody confirm that this works? My girlfriend's 3D gets a lot worse signal than mine. I'd definitely try this but only if it might actually work. She really doesn't like the factory resets because she has to redo all of her preferences.
Her's is so much more worse than mine that we've been thinking about getting it replaced.

##786# will do a factory reset on your phone. ##72786# will do a "Data Only" reset (i.e. you don't lose any installed apps). I would try that before ##786#. You will need your MSL for both. I have done both. Unfortunately, in my case, the 3g improved for only a couple of hours and then it went back to tower jumping both times. I now have an appointment with the sprint store to replace my 3d later this evening.

#786## worked to fix my 3G speeds. I was consistently getting under 100 Kbps up and down before walking through this procedure with Sprint a week ago. Since then, latency has gone down and speeds have improved significantly.
It did not fix persistent problems with GPS not locking and having poor signal reception compared to the 4G. Between these issues, overheating and the locked bootloader, I am pretty close to returning this phone (although I like most other aspects of it).
Looks as though the Photon 4G cleared the FCC today.
I think I will live with the 3d a bit longer just in case they come out with some miraculous software fix, otherwise return it, activate the BB until the Photon comes out.
Hopefully, for where I live and work at least it will have much better reception.
That's strange that a few of you guys have had every issue that was reported in some of those awful reviews. I've actually found my 3D has the exact same signal as the 4G sitting right next to it. It also recognizes changes in signal faster than the 4G. I must have been lucky to get one with no issues.
My EVO 3d is straight out of a snoop dog song, my calls are droppin like their hot!
My 4G never did this crap!

I don't believe that there is anything wrong with the phone itself, however I do believe that there was a bad batch of radios installed on some of the 3vo's. Like I said, my brother's 3vo is working just fine while mine seems to be a lemon.
Is anyone having trouble using the 3D as a phone? I'm finding that this phone drops calls WAY more often than my TouchPro2 did. Drops them in places where the TP2 sailed right through. And even when the call is well-connected, I find that I can't understand what people are saying to me over the phone, and they report the same thing about my conversation to them. I'm constantly saying "What? Could you repeat that, please?", and so are the people at the other end.
This is an amazing device for many things - Hotspot, Navigation, Music and Media, Games, etc. - but as a phone, it leaves a lot to be desired.
I haven't had any trouble with dropped calls, but I usually have good signal when I use it. I do think the sound quality sucks compare to the evo. I called XM radio on my 3D and I could barley understand what the guy was saying. Stupid offshore call center doesn't help of course but still call quality was better on my evo. My speaker almost sounds kinda blown but I put another 3D side by side mine it sounds exactly the same.
I have an old sanyo 7050 for my work phone, call quality on that runs circles around the evo.
Do a search and try some of the tweaks to get better reception. If that does not work exchange it.
I gave up on it and took it back to Sprint yesterday. It just kept dropping calls in weak signal areas, and even when calls were connected, intelligibility suffered in both directions. So I'm back to using my old Touch Pro 2, and everyone is telling me that the sound is much better. I'll miss all the cool features of the 3vo - it really is a great device in many ways - but at least now I can count on my phone to make phone calls.
Of course, I'm running Android on the TP2, so it's not as bad as it seems!
Now I just have to figure out what's the next great phone coming along on Sprint. Hopefully they'll come up with something new sometime later in the year.
I get the same amount if dropped calls as my EVO. Either your area has some signal issues or maybe you have a defective phone.

You mean maybe I "had" a defective phone. Could be. Yes, my area definitely has signal issues, always has. Sprint has the best coverage in the area, but it's not that good. Still, the difference between my TP2 and the Evo3D is dramatic. The TP2 gets through the weak spots without losing the call (in most cases). The Evo3D just drops them. I never owned the older Evo - maybe it would have had trouble here, too. But quite a few people have said that the new Evo is not as good as the old one in this area.
Maybe the next HTC will be better. I hope so. I'm sure that the 3D will be fine for those who spend most of their time in strong signal areas. But I don't recommend it for those who are farther out from the city and/or suburbs.
Definitely sounds like it was an issue with your phone. I went from a TP2 to the 3D and haven't seen any real difference with the signal I'm pulling or my call quality. My wife tells me I sound the same, maybe better than before.
Yeah I'm having issues also. My signal isn't great at my house, but my evo usually was fine, did drop calls though. The 3d is killing me, its impossible to be on the phone for any duration. Only have a few days left, wanted to throw it last night, sucks i really like this phone, but may go back.

Just to close the loop on this discussion, after I returned the EVO3D, I waited for Sprint to come out with an Android phone that would have better call quality. On Saturday, I bought a new Motorola Photon 4G. It is an excellent Android phone, quite comparable to the 3D in most respects. Obviously, it doesn't have Sense (which some people seem to really like - personally, I'm indifferent to it). And it doesn't have the 3D gimmick (which I consider a blessing - the Photon has an 8mp camera instead!).
But most important, the call quality is excellent. It has a much better grasp of the signal than the 3D, it has yet to drop a call. And the voice quality is much better in both directions. This is what drew me to this phone - all the online reviews that I found were consistent in noting the very good call quality. Turns out they were right.
I'm sure most people here are delighted with the 3D, and I was as well - except for the call quality issues. If you live and work where there is a strong Sprint signal, you'll probably never have a bit of trouble. But for those who live farther out from the city, where the towers are farther apart, the new Photon4G is a very good choice. I'm really glad that I made the switch!
Either way, enjoy!

Perhaps so. But the new phone is on the same network, and it's not dropping any calls. For that matter, neither did my old TP2. I guess that's really my point - the 3D doesn't do nearly as well as other phones with lower signal levels. As long as you've got good signal, it works fine. Sprint coverage is better in some places than others, so YMMV. In any event, I'm not knocking the 3D - it's a great device. It just didn't work very well as a phone in my geography.

Hm my 3D gets better coverage in my house than my Hero or Evo did, and about the same as my epic4G did.
ill be honest. this thing blows when it comes to signal. maaybe a different radio may fix it. But I used to have sprin and the OG evo(switched for tmobile and came back for the 3d)..and the coverage was so so inside my apartment. the 3d doesnt work at all. People keep telling me they are calling me and **** and my phone doesnt ring. My brothers OG Evo works fine. I want to exchange it, but I dont think a new one is going to change anything. Call quality is also terrible even in good signal areas.
Im getting my phone replaced since my camera went bad, but my biggest concern on this phone would have to be call quality. I could barely understand the sprint rep when talking to me. If they don't fix the call quality on this phone, I will have to replace it. This is ridiculous, and my HTC Hero was amazing in call quality. HTC Hero and HTC EVO 3D ran on the same network, so it must be a phone issue.
I haven't had any issues with quality, but I guess u live in an area with strong service

I did the same thing, except my evo 3d had a major screen-freakout I couldn't fix. I also had sprint buy-back my otterbox and that money went towards the car-dock for the photon (which is freaking awesome btw). The Photon is actually a wonderful piece of hardware too. It's much lighter, so it "feels" cheap, but in all actuality it's comparable build quality. The Moto UI they have in it is a lot closer to vanilla android than HTC sense IMHO, but I'm flexible as far as that goes.
There are some features I'll miss about my 3vo, but frankly the 3d imaging made me nauseous, I didn't care for Sense, and the photon does seem to have better signal/call quality.
I'd put both devices in the same tier. Dual-core powerhouses that will provide plenty of use for a long time... but I'm kinda favoring the photon, which surprises me more than anything.
Newbee to this section and photon in general. My son has an epic touch 4g and is very much unhappy with dropped calls, texts that arrive hours later, things that pertain to the phones ability to make calls etc. I have heard that the photon is very good as a phone, maybe it has a stronger antenna or something? I myself have an evo 3d and it's not the greatest as far as phone calls either. To me all of these devices are pretty close spec wise (dual core, good graphics, etc) so i was thinking about trying to trade one of the phones for a photon. Do you think i would notice an improvement in call quality? If i do trade should i look for a phone that has not been updated past a certain point (for rooting purposes)? thank you for your time.

would definitely notice a difference, p photon been a great phone best I've ever owned....yeah try to get on thats on 2.3.4.... if your planning on unlocking, I think root can be done either way but if you want to unlock the bootloader need the older version, granted I have no idea if the newest photons on the shelves have been updated though so might be worrying for nothing, but best to play it safe ya know

+1....Compared to E4G and ogEVO the Photon is miles above them for signal strength and overall "phone function" usage.
The photon definitely has a better radio than other phone I've seen. I have friends on sprint who will barely hold 1-2 bars of signal while my photon has a solid 4. I've never had a single dropped call and only had late texts one time, and a simple reboot fixed it.

i agree to all. High quality radios in the Photon that will provide you with great communications. For smartdevices, its up there but not 1st. for a phone where communication is key, it is untouchable. you will be impressed by the call quality if you buy one.

As a phone, it gets some weird popping sounds sometimes, like a short in the speaker. Makes me think the other person hung up.
There was an audio routing issue at launch that has since been fixed and not the MoPho is superior in many ways. CDMA is reliable so far as retaining calls, dropped calls are typically a network issue, that said the issues you've seen with other phones dropping calls are probably device specific and should be regarded as such. Unless you're talking about a device sounding "tinny" or garbled or echoes ect. call quality is usually network related.
Photon owns. Best phone I've ever had. Out of box, Modded, whatever. MoPho.
As a phone the Motorola Photon 4G is the best phone on Sprint. Motorola is known to make great wireless radios. You will get better signal with the Photon than any other phone on Sprint.
So if you're a person that actually counts on getting all your calls, text, and voicemails on time, currently the Photon is your best option on Sprint. I use to have the Epic Touch, great device in all aspects except for being a phone.
Sprint is the worst major carrier in the U.S. in my opinion. I've been with all 4 majors. The only thing good about Sprint is unlimited plans. Their prices aren't too far off other carries. You may save a few bucks but it's not major. Just good plans. I changed to Verizon. You pay more but I get signal everywhere and I'm a person that relies on phone calls.

Ever since I switched over from my EVO 4G, signal strength became very poor.... I constantly has no data and voice!? It has never happened to my original EVO... is anyone having the same problem?? Is there anything I could do on my end??

When did you switch? My LTEvo started doing that I guess around Friday sometime? I got a few texts and calls here and there, but now .... nothing incoming. But I can make calls out. Factory reset/cdma only/with&without wifi/prl&profile etc, *2 prl&profile also no luck, waiting to hear back from a tech. May take it to swap if theres any in and see. I got mine 24th? and had been great untill the other day.
I've had the same problem since last weekend. My phone keeps going to roam with 1-2 bars, whereas before it would be on Sprint's network with about 3 out of 6 bars.
Download speeds are slower than normal over the 3G as well. I used my OG Evo 4G in an area without WiMax, so I am used to Sprint's 3G speeds, but they definitely seem worse on the EVO LTE.
I try downloading Profile & PRL updates every other day, as well as rebooting daily, but it doesn't seem to help.
I also got mine on the 24th, and it has been bad ever since... I did some updates but seem no improvements, wonder if the signal booster apps from play store help...

It seems pretty wide spread about signal strength, data speeds, and wifi signal drop. I'm hoping it's a software thing and not a hardware thing. Software can be fixed with code, hardware...you're screwed! My wife has the LTE and has had this issues as well.

My phone started doing this today too. I really hope it gets addressed and it's not hardware, I don't feel like taking it back after just setting everything up.
Let's listen to ourselves and think about this for a moment....
:My phone started to do this today".
I guess it must be contagious because my wife's Epic 4G and my work Blackberry both developed it our home location as well.
An epidemic outbreak!
I have a sneaking suspicion that Sprint messed up the latest prl.
Also, wouldn't hurt to update profile and prl from Settings/System Updates
I was reading about signal issues on the Nexus S 4G (which is what my wife has), and they recommended turning NFC off. I tried this on both my Evo LTE and her NS4G, and it seemed to be better for a little bit, but when we woke up this morning, both of our phones were back to roaming.
I think the only thing left to do is blame Sprint's PRL update, since this problem seems to be affecting more than just our new Evo LTE's.
I was happy to see a thread on this, I got mine on Saturday and having had Sprint prior the signal strength is way less. It also tends to swing a lot, going from full to 1 or 0 bars. Sometimes when I pick it up and turn the screen on there is no signal at all.
My wifi has been awful, I turned of nfc and its fantastic! Thanks! I did have the missed calls and texts not going thru and I swapped it out at best buy and hasnt happend since
Edit: First few speed test where awesome, but when I leave the room my routers in the speed goes from 13mps to 4mps...
I've had my Evo LTE since launch, and have had call issues since the beginning. I came from the OG Evo, and knew Sprint had bad coverage in some areas around me; but this has been much much worse. I would say 4 out 5 calls drop immediately upon connection. I will have half or more signal when I call and as soon as it connects it drops off and I look and there are 0 bars. Oh, I'm also not in a town which has the updated network/LTE. I had done the HTC Unlock immediately, so I was nervous about trying to take my phone back. But thanks to this amazing guide, I can get it back to stock. Has anyone else had issues like this fixed by getting a new phone?
My main question is who do I take it back to? I have the BB Black Tie insurance, so I was thinking that would be easiest/quickest exchange. But I wasn't sure how they would react since there is nothing visibly wrong with the phone. And I'm sure as soon as I get in Best Buy it will work flawlessly .
are you in an area that is currently undergoing Network vision updates? In my area (Chicago suburbs), sprint acknowledged that the NV upgrades were causing problems.
I constantly get "no data connection" when I have 3 bars (not roaming) :/
have try doing a service reset? ##72786#

I have not. I'm assuming it's okay to do this running S-Off and custom Rom (CM10)?
I have also noticed terrible 3G speeds, much much worse than my OG Evo.

I'm in north okc and have the exact same issue. I've been in numerous lengthy phone calls with sprint about this and I'm on my second phone to no avail. My girls phone is the same. This phone does not like the okc area whatsoever. I remember my 3d was the same. I am currently at the point of leaving sprint for this. I love this phone but its driving me crazy. And let's not get into peak hours data drop.... I'm so frustrated with sprint right now.

Well, I think I'm going to go back full stock tomorrow and run it by a Sprint repair store. Guys in IRC channel recommended I have them check my radios. I work with a guy who has a Samsung on Sprint and doesn't have great signal, but better than mine! I'm so torn right now, I know if i switched to Verizon I'd have great LTE signal all over town, but I wanted to support Sprint and see if they could fix their network. Now I'm regretting it but stuck in contract. But then again if I were to switch, there aren't really any phones I'm interested in on Verizon...
I love this phone but, I am.pissed and tired of repair stores, and sprint technical, and supervisors, and credits. They can see that most of my disconnects are device related and still won't switch me to another device or something. I really don't even want to switch. But, I totally believe its network being upgraded and this device is designed for something other than what's offered in my area.

Send it in to htc and have them fix it. They warranty it for a year.
I had one that dropped calls but my second one is perfect.
Well, I'm going to try to get to the Sprint store later this afternoon. Will update here with result. If it's just their **** network, think they might let me out of contract if I ***** enough? If they do, then where do I go? I freaking love this phone, but if it can't make phone calls I can't keep it...
--Update--
I went to a Sprint store on Saturday to see what they said. As soon as I mentioned dropped calls and crappy speeds he started apologizing. Evidently they have begun the network update in Oklahoma, which means that a lot of towers are down or not at normal capacity. He said this has been going on most of the year and that the network should be back at normal capacity by the end of the year. He also said he had heard LTE by June-July of 2013, but was just a rumor. He reset my profile and PRL and said it might help. I'm going to stick it out as of now and hope they can produce a solid LTE network. I do really love Sprint and their fight for unlimited data, just hope they keep it up.
Dropped Calls
I, too, have had terrible luck with calls dropping with this phone. I was on the OG EVO and did not have these issues at all. From looking at this site s4gru.com I do not believe that my area (Indy) should be under any network updating as of yet. However, it also looks like Oklahoma should not be, either - so maybe they started early
In the end...my old EVO did not have issues up to the day I upgraded, and the new EVO has had issues since day 1. I do not believe this is a network issue, but more of a hardware/radio/phone design issue. I hoped the newest updates (including radio) would help, but I am still dropping calls way too often.
