Tried 10 times to brick the phone and no success.. i think i give up
Oh, ok.
Jk, it took me 15 times to get it bricked, just be patient and keep trying

I got it on the first try... Wat really helped was the video... try doing it while watching the video..... I was doing what he was doing and unplugged it on his count to 5 secs

Re-read the guide, I updated on why many people are having issues bricking. let the device sit for about 2 minutes while it says vol up to update, don't press update right away.
Took me a bunch of times, but I tried different times (5 seconds didn't work, try 4 seconds, etc) finally got it at 3.5 but it took probably about 15 times. Just so you don't get too frustrated, think about this: IT IS HARD TO BRICK OUR PHONE EVEN WHEN TRYING!
LOL, this is a good thing.
Once again THANK YOU for the downgrade!

Keep trying, it takes the right timing, 5 seconds is just about enough time, you could also disregard the time aspect and simply look for the update indication bar. It's in the upper right hand corner, the INSTANT you see that bar, you pull the cord.
Never give up. Use live CD. Took me three tries, and hboot 1.4 now.
1st EVO 3d, Hboot 1.4
2nd EVO 3d, Downgraded Hboot 1.4
MeanRom
Anthrax....
Perfection, at least for me!
It took me 78 tries (yes, I kept a running tally) but did eventually get it. I stopped looking for the elusive "dim light" and just plugged it into my Linux box after every attempt. Took 3 tries after that.

The light is RIDICULOUSLY dim. I was telling my wife I don't know how it was figured out due to the fact that one could barely see it.
Make sure you use the stock EVO 3d charger and usb cord also plug directly into wall no power strip trust me it makes a big difference.

I never came back to this thread sorry. I was able to do it a day after I posted this and expressed my joy in the official thread
I know this is an older thread, but I just wanted to see if anyone knew why my HTC a/c charger turned the phone off every time I pulled the battery to brick? I have a Samsung charger and 2 HTC chargers. Neither HTC charger will keep the phone on after I pull the batter, only the Samsung... Rather frustrating, especially when all the forums say you MUST use the HTC a/c charger.
You don't *have* to use the HTC charger. I used a cheap two port Walmart charger and it worked fine. Use a charger that keeps your phone on...that's the trick. If it means using another brand charger, who cares, just as long as your phone stays turned on.

Thanks for the quick reply! Ok that takes some of the frustrations out a little. Also if I have bricked the phone correctly the phone will NOT turn on when I press the power button correct?

I think that's correct, but i never tried to turn it back on. I just saw that the lamp was just barely on, very, very dim and i moved to the next step. You can do it. And the power strip works well for some people. They say it's easier to time shutting the power strip off than pulling out the cable. But ymmv.
If your 3devo is bricked, all you will see is a *very* faint glow of the power led. So faint that you damn near have to be in a dark room...really dark. I did mine at night and could hardly see the faint glow.
It took me three tries. The first two, I waited too long. Third time was the charm.
I'm 99.9999% sure it won't turn on. Thus the term, "bricked."

Last night, for no apparent reason, my EVOLTE decided it didn't want to turn on.
I hit the power button to turn on the screen and got nothing. It was odd because I should have had plenty of battery so I held the power button down and still nothing, except the capacitive buttons flashed a few times.
I figured something happened and my battery drained completely. Got in the car and plugged the phone into the charger and didn't even get the orange charging light. Waited a few minutes, tried to power it on again, still nothing but blinking lights.
Then I just decided to hold the power button for a really long time. Lights blinked, then stopped. I kept holding the power button and still nothing, set the phone on the passenger seat (all this time it was plugged in about 15 min) and out of nowhere, boom, it starts booting up.
Once it booted up completely, everything was normal and I had 73% battery. No way it would have gotten to 73% in 15 min if it had drained completely.
Still no idea what happened.
Hopefully someone can help you that had the same issue but its definitely uncommon.

Are you running stock or a rooted ROM, dev ROM, etc.? If stock, you might be in a handset replacement scenario. Sprint can run diags on it.

I too have had this happen a number of times since the OTA update. I'm stock, non-rooted.
Very annoying to have to wait until phone decides it's going to turn back on.
I just had this happen for the first time to me right now. So far hasn't turned back on.
It happened to me at the first few weeks. I tried all combo's, not sure which one worked. Try holding all of them down, I may have just started button mashing towards the end.
I am stock unrooted and took the OTA.
I did try to boot into bootloader which also did not work.
Glad (not really) to hear that it has happened to others. Thought about taking it to Sprint, might still do that.
Anyone else that had this issue take theirs to Sprint for diagnostics?

No, it was power and volume up. I am on the phone so I don't want to search, but holding those together got my phone back.
That happened to me with fast boot enabled, holding power button brought it back. I don't use fast boot anymore lol

This same thing happened to me. Turned the phone off to take it out of my defender and wipe it down. When I went to power back on nothing. Plugged into power and got no led. I had fast boot on. I now have fastboot off hopefully I don't run into this again. But I agree I am somewhat happy to see this has happened to others since the OTA. Btw I am stock unrooted.

So i have had my EVOLTE for a while now (3rd one) and currently I was running OMJ's JB Sense Rom. Everything was working fine, but in the past day, my phone was a little laggy, so I downloaded another ROM and Kernel, and set my phone down to let it download.
I noticed that the phone was getting a little hot, but thought that when downloading large files, it sometimes did. Later I went back to check on the phone while it was on the charger, and it seemed to be going fine, but when I unplugged it, the phone turned off, and now will not turn back on.
The soft button lights will flash when I hold up and power or down and power, but the screen never comes on, and sometimes it will randomly vibrate. Ive been trying to fix it using the unlimited.io ubuntu tools, but I cant get any of them to recognize it as being plugged into the USB. My laptop just keeps seeing it as an MTP device. I am rooted but not S-OFF...
Please Help!

Did you relock the bootloader before trying the RUU? It won't work if it's unlocked. Can you get into the bootloader or recovery?

I've got nothing, then. Doesn't sound like a total brick, though, especially since the capacitive buttons light up. If you can let the battery die, plug your phone up and see if it will charge. This would be a good sign, in my opinion. Was your battery low when you were trying to flash the ROM?
Sent using my HTC EVO LTE and a magic wand
when i hold down the up and power buttons together, the bottom lights flash until it appears to go off and then it appears to reboot, by vibrating like it usually does upon boot, but that is the last thing that happens. The screen never appears to even come on...

You need to hold the power and volume DOWN buttons after doing the battery pull reset. That should get you into the bootloader.

If the lights still blink, then the device isn't dead. I'd throw it on the charger and forget about it for a few hours, and then try to get into HBOOT again.
It was on the charger from 10 pm till 8am and still nothing is happening... Thanks for all of your help

Trying powering it on again, and connect it to a PC. See if the PC recognizes it at all. That will help determine whether the device is on, and your screen is burnt out, or if something else is wrong. If it does acknowledge a device was plugged in, try an "adb devices" to see if adb can see the device.
If the screen doesn't come on at all, you should have no problem taking it to Sprint and getting a replacement.
So I recently got a replacement DNA from verizon, but I'm not sure if it's a refurb or not. Anyway, I left my phone for like two hour today on at least like 70 percent charge, and when i came back the screen wouldn't turn on. When i hold down the power button, the three LED buttons flash, but nothing happens. I tried plugging it in, but the charge light indicator won't even come on. Just making it clear, my phone is NOT rooted. What do i do!
I would go to a Verizon store, and ask the rep for another replacement. If the issue gets worse email HTC support @ HTC.com
Hope this helps.
Did you try like pressing and holding the power button until the lights flash AND it vibrates ? If not, try that, like next.

Isn't verizon supposed to test the device to make sure it fits the precirtifed stuff. I that's poor customer support and if that's the case I would request that they credit your account or provide you with some kind of benifit

My phone boots up for 5 seconds to the samsung screen and then it shuts off. I can not get into recovery. I tried going into download mode, but when it enters download mode approx 5 sec and then it shuts off not enough time for odin to run. My battery is fully charge. What should I do?:crying:
Does it vibrate and restart as well?
Could possibly be the power button is stuck. Happens sometimes.
And since it Powers up ... It is not bricked.

Stuck power button. . . or flashed an incomplete Rom from a bad download. . .just guessing because you didn't say what you did that led up to this.
How about a little insight on events leading up to the issue.

Last night i flashed Xylon 2.5 unOfficial Rom for quincyatt from ManelScott4Life off his site and then i flashed the recent 4Ace kernel and it was working perfectly for I used it for a couple hour before going to sleep. As I was listening to music on the way to school. It shut off and until now i need to take battery out n put back in order for it to boot for 5 seconds n shuts off again
Odd....But I still would not rule out a stuck button.
If you have a good backup that you can restore, you might could try a wipe and reflash of that backup.
The real test will be if you can boot into your recovery and it stays there. If it does not, then the problem leans toward a button issue again.
And of course, the battery could also be causing trouble. We have had failed batteries act the same as you describe. If you have a spare, try it. If not, plug the device into AC power and attempt the boot into recovery.
Either way, if the phone stays in recovery, you have a battery issue, or corrupted rom...g

I have a question. I have the same exact problem as the OP. However in my case I dont know what happened to the phone as someone just gave it to me since it didnt work and I have a Note they figured I could use it for parts. That aside At first i tried everything and no go. But today i was able to put it into download mode and like 5 seconds into it it shuts off. My main question is how do you know if the button is stuck 1. 2. How do you fix that?
Edit: well i opened my phone up and cleaned out the button and rubber thing and it did the trick! You guys are my heroes!!!

How did you clean out your button? I have the EXACT same symptoms, but my rubber buttons in the case, and white power button appears to be clean. I can hear the button itself make contact. I can't get to recovery mode, but I can hit download mode for 5 seconds.
leaving the casing of the phone removed, I have the same exact symptoms so it Has to be the button itself... *shrug
the button gets stuck even when you still hear/feel it clicking. open the phone and blast it with duster. Press and depress the button rapidly many times till it frees internally
