I didnt do anything in devoid froyo final before flashing new kernel..nd its working fine..

Flashed francos kernel on top of cm 7 without wipes. Just make sure you do a backup.

As far as I know you don't have to wipe "Data", but "Cache" seems to be recommended.
I recently updated my Devoid. Froyo-Final with the latest Franco's V18 Kernel and wiped only "Cache" and "Dalvik Cache". Everything seems to be working fine afterwards.

Thanks. Dude

Dalvik is actually like a java virtual machine and is used to run phone's apps under linux kernel.
Edit: and thus we have dalvik-cache which I suppose you understand what it is

It's the internal cache that the Android Virtual Machine stores for applications.
Which recovery do you have installed? CWM or AmonRA?
If it's CWM then the "Wipe Dalvik Cache" is located inside the "Advanced" menu.

I usually dont wipe anything before installing new kernels.
Just to test it out, i wiped cache while moving from v17 to v18 of franco's kernel.
My google account went missing on my phone. I had to add my google account and sync contacts and others..
So, I recommend not to wipe anything unless not wiping creates specific problems..

Maybe

Maybe you accidentally wiped all data or factory reset.
I've been using Franco's kernels & I only wipe cache & dalvik cache every time & haven't encountered any problem.

if u flash new kernel u have to wip cache & Dalvik Cache.
its best way to avoid problems with the new kernel.

Never mind the Q I'm going from mik cm7 kernel to FK v18 do I need to wipe ... cache/dalvik

[Q] Switching between ROMS?

Hey guys, quick question. I am currently running CM7 on my V but it is to unstable for me, too many FC's and reboots. I would like to flash That Ain't Sense ROM, found here:
http://androidforums.com/optimus-v-all-things-root/312747-rom-theme-wait-aint-sense-4-6-2011-a.html
Under the directions, it says:
how to flash:
put gapps and rom on sdcard
wipe the hell out of your phone
flash both and reboot
enjoy

When it says, wipe the hell out of the phone, what specifically do I have to wipe, and at what time during the process? Since I am moving to an entirely new ROM, what do I need to wipe?
P.S. I am running thunderc recovery.
Data, cache, system, dalvik cache and something else i can't remember. If am i not wrong, ROMManager doesn't work on the V, so you can't switch back and forth freely, unless there is another method.

Okay do I wipe all of that before flashing or after or what? Its been a while since my last flash.

You wanna wipe before flashing a new ROM. I wipe data/cache, then Dalvik cache then flash ROM, then gapps file

Is that all I have to wipe? I made a nandroid backup but I just want to make sure I'm doing this right.

This should be in Q&A
That's all I wipe. Wiping everything won't hurt though. Just don't do a factory reset through the settings with the phone booted up. Do it through the recovery.

Switching from CN to CM9
I am running CN ICS v3 and want to flash CM9 A2. Can I just wipe dalvik, cache and factory reset and flash the zip from CWM or do I have to do a complete uninstall and then install because of the different kernals? Thanks

I think you can just CWM the new CM9 A2 over your current ICS install. It will overwrite your current kernel.
Just make sure you do full wipe, cache and Dalvik cache wipe before you do the flash within CWM.
I just flashed mine from CM9 A.6 and so far so good... Have not tested the Netflix but it seems nice so far and no SODs for the last 4 hours since the flash... I hope never but will see...

Did you have Classicnerd loaded? I heard that if you don't do an uninstall it will leave parts of the kernal. I was hoping to do a very good wipe, wipe, wipe and wipe... and wipe some more. Or I can wait for CN to catch up. I do like Leo and the gang.
Thanks for your help.

I just did
Wipe factory data, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache each twice. Reboot. Wipe again. Then flash
Do not restore data inky case, YouTube does not work when I tried to restore from CWM. Restore from TB selectively.
Sound seems to be broken. I get no sound from keyboard and the volume rocker cannot control volume. The volume is either mute or maximum.

Never mind, a reboot fix the sound problem.

Do a full wipe then flash uImage remover zip found on classic nerd site, under ics betas folder, then flash cm9 and gapps.
That is exactly what I did and it works great. I wiped three time of each Dalvik, cache and factory reset, flashed the moboot kernal remover, flashed CM9 v2, gapps and rebooted. Went very smooth. From what I understand is that if you don't get rid if the old kernals and you flash over them they cause problems and that is why you flash the moboot kernal remover.
After I logged in I used TB to reinstall my apps and all is well. Very well. The CM team did an outstanding job.
Thank you all for your advice.

The not wiping anything part is probably your problem. You should always at least wipe cache and dalvik. Data and system can stay intact. Make sure you downloaded the right version aswell. (Cdma/gsm) wipe those and try again. If that doesn't work, perhaps try those fixes youre refering to and if that doesn't work, full wipe.

Which rom are you referring to? cm10 is his latest i believe? Is your photon unlocked & rooted? What Recovery did you flash? (joker has A CWM specially made for his roms) Unless you are upgrading a rom to a newer version of it, or you are using aroma installer, it is always important to wipe your phone prior to flashing. Im a wee bit OCD about it, so i
1) Wipe data/factory reset
2) Wipe Cache Partition
3) Format System
4) Format Data
5) Format Cache
6) Wipe Dalvic Cache
Then begin flashing. For safe measures always flash your rom twice to ensure it has been properly flashed
*edit*
Did you flash from a stock rom? If so, which gingerbread version was it running? and did you ensure to update it before you flashed?

I think i flashed Omega right because it's no Wipe????

Hey guys, i have flashed for the first time EVER a custom rom on my S3 Omega V13.1,i was on stock rom BLG8,and i wiped only dalvik cache and cache partition and preloaded cache before install with aroma which cool.
The thing is i've noticed no lags i tried calls,Wifi all the things works perfectly all my apps and games stood the way they were i havent lost anything of my data.iS THIS NORMAL since i flashed this custom rom over a stock one??
Ps: i'm rooted and i'm on SiyahKernel 1.5.2
Problems equal wipe no problems equal wipe not needed .
jje
Thanks man!!
It's normal, cause you didn't wipe data / factory reset in recovery. Although you don't notice any problems wiping data is recommended if you come from another rom than Omega

[Q] How to install this rom? xD

Hi guys, you can tell me how to install this rom? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2012666
What kernel should I use for better results?
I think like any other rom...
Put it into your sd-card, reboot to CWM and do the wipes(Factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache, format system) and the install the .zip
But first of all you should flash the kernel which is given in the download(together with the rom)
AW: [Q] How to install this rom? xD
I think he better should not format system
Just wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache and advanced -> wipe dalvik cache!

I'm doing it everytime I flash a new rom
Nothing wrent wrong :fingers-crossed:
Any ICS kernel is compatible. I strongly recommend MESA Hybrid v3.5 or LuPuS v3. I also recommend to format system before flashing new ROM. I've done it over 100 times safely. You'll avoid a lot of problems.

I think he should first do it without wiping system and incase it was required and he stuck in a bootloop, then he can simply do the process again with wiping system
Press THANKS if I helped,
Regards,
AJ
I tried the rom(with rage kernel 3.2), and always go in bootloop
make sure u already have ur ROM on sdcard and the others (wifi-fix.zip or whatever)
on CMW, u can safely wipe /system when u wanna flash new ROM, but REMEMBER not to reboot your phone AFTER u wipe /system. if u do this, u will see "new boot kernel animation" a.k.a BOOTLOOP.
after wipe /system,/cache,/dalvik,/data,/sd-ext then next thing is install ur ROM.
if u using TWRP, its not necessary to wipe /system bcoz TWRP will wiping /system by itself when u install new ROM.
yes, i sent from my phone using Xda Premium, so what?
