[Q] Ota then use RUU to downgrade hboot? - HTC EVO 3D

I was just wondering that if I did the OTA, someone said you could use the RUU in the development section. I was thinking that it couldn't downgrade the bootloader too though right? Since its been updated to a newer version?

nope it throws an error complaining about the bootloader version.

Yeah currently there isn't any way (that I know of) to downgrade the hboot from 1.40.

Well this blows...I have been noticing some bugs that are probably fixed with the OTAs...but I don't want to be screwed if the Devs figure out a way using the hboot 1.3. I know two others who have the OG Evo and the lady updated it in the store. They're screwed. Have been for 3 weeks already ssince the hboot ia secured and there's no exploit available. so I just don't want to take the chance that they did with updating the hboot.

<Warning> People on Evo 3D getting the new OTA: do not update yet, unless you've already ran Revolutionary to S-OFF.
Yezzir, just saw that
(I am Un-Rooted, But I want to root today!) Am I reading this correctly? do NOT update with the OTA (8/18/2011) update, UNLESS I am already rooted?
So if I root today is it safe to update with that OTA update that came out today *8/18/2011?
I think the update does patch the current root method.
Plus for piece of mind don't ever accept OTA updates from sprint or HTC if you like your root and s-off.
I don't know why some people insist on running a update knowing in the back of their mind they'll possibly/probably loose root, and who knows for how long. Just wait a day or two for the devs to implement it in their ROMs.
You can still take the update because HTC just released the bootloader unlocked method for the HTC EVO 3d.

HTC unlocker = clusterfuck
Revolution = the correct way.
yea not understanding htc way ... unlocked bootloader but you still have s-on ?
Nobody even knows how HTC's unlock even works. There are Sensation users with S-Off and they used HTC's method. Unfortunately, there's about 10 posts like those above to 1 post of actual information about it.
Its looks like its a partial unlock.
I'm sticking with revolutionary, I have root, everything is working awesome, n I didn't lose my warranty
So your saying since I have s-off with revolutionary, I can take the update and still have s-off? Also will this update break root?

If you take the ota through system updates and if you have a custom ROM and recovery it will not allow you to update. It will give you an error message. If you decide to lose the custom recovery and go forward with the ota it will lock your phone with S-on and you will have no way going back to 2.3.3. You will be stuck with lastest ota 2.3.4 with S-on and no root. Then if you decide after that you can't get back to 2.3.3 and think since you can't go back might as well go forward with HTC's bootloader unlock method. It will unlock the bootloader but you still will have S-on and noway of flashing a custom recovery which means no root. If your dying for this update check out the dev section and I believe you can update the prl, kernel, firmware mins the hboot. Check it out. If it was me I would wait for revolutionary or a team that knows what they are doing to release an rooted ota.

OTA Update today?

Anyone get an email saying an ota is available today? Got it for my EVO and 3d. Of course, I'm not gonna do it, just saying look out for it.

It's probably just that security update that came out a few days ago. It basically removes the carrier spyware and patches some holes. Nothing bad.
Is this ota ok to take if we're stock and rooted via htc method?

It probably says whether or not it is in one of the other threads about it
don't take the update. if you are running a custom rom you have no reason to remove ciq because it is probably already gone.
also, the update patches all known exploits to root the device... so if you are stock, and you are are not rooted, you might screw yourself.

Actually, the previous update with the 1.50 hboot patched all known exploits. This OTA doesn't update the hboot, so if you did the HTC unlock method because of your 1.50 hboot, you should be fine installing this. Granted, it might make some OTHER change to patch a future possibility, but that can't be guaranteed.
Shame on htc....

Remember that leak...

That updated everyone's radio and hboot, and then the release ruu came and it was actually a LOWER version number and none of the people who flashed the leaked ruu could flash the release ruu.
I cant remember what phone it was, does anyone remember? Or am I crazy?

Yeah, a leak from Verizon had a ICS Main Ver that messed everyone's main ver up so that they couldn't use the GB RUU. We got around it by changing the main ver via abd and su. What about it?

The fact that if he is right, we would be screwed. Unlike the main ver, the radios are the one portion we cannot, by any means, mess with (and as far as i know, that includes the version). So if they DO pull something like that, we would be SOL...

um couldnt we just change the mainver back to something low say 1.00.000.0 then we could ruu (phone thinks it's an update) and it would flash the radio back to how it was... so no we wouldn't be sol im pretty sure
Wouldn't it run into a Hboot older error? The Hboot was updated to 2.21 from 2.11.
If a radio problem is found, no one will be able to change unless a higher version number radio is released that fixes it. Hboot at least has a hope with the EVO 3d method of down grade.
S-On radio and hboot leak flashing is serious business imo.

Eris has a problem with 2.1 leak yes. I was victim. lol. those who waited.. got root the next week.
us who didn't weer stuck without root, on a leaked firmware that wasn't working well AT ALL
So what exactly happened afterwards with the Eris? This is making me a little nervous about updating to the new firmware.
Am I missing something? Can't we just flash an older RUU, which will flash a lower radio version. Then run the update?
I was under the impression that an ruu flashed the radios as well as everything else. Is that not the case?

I'm also afraid something like this could happen. I really hope bout because I'm screaming for ice cream with good radios, I've read that the new radios are really good battery wise.

You cant downgrade the radio with out s-off. You cant just run an older ruu if a problem is found.
I'm not trying to talk anyone out of upgrading. Just make sure you understand what your doing.

Can you explain? So running an older ruu doesn't flash the older radio as well.
Because I know it updated my radio when I flashed the leaked ruu.
Thanks for the info.

I remember reading about that when I was on the og droid..thinking that would suck. I've been running this since Friday and if I get stuck on it I am okay with that. I haven't noticed any limitations in my use from stock GB.
There r only do many improvements that can be made, truthfully not sure what more can be done for reception or call quality.

You might get the Rom, kernel, and recovery to flash with/from an ruu, but its not going to downgrade hboot or radio.
If I'm wrong, someone please let me know.

You wouldn't get past the Hboot check. With the new leak, it updated your hboot. It was 2.11 now 2.21. If they left the hboot alone, then maybe, just maybe it would have allowed you to reset the mainver and reflash an older RUU, but that won't now.

I don't think you can S-Off yet with the latest. DirtyRacun may support it now I could be wrong. Watch Qbking77's videos on YouTube to unlock and root your device. Good luck and welcome.

If you are already on 2.09 hboot, I think you have to use the hboot downgrade method to brick your phone and install an earlier hboot which will let you run dirty racun. It is by no means easy, and I don't know if there is still support for that method.

The only way to downgrade your HBOOT on this device IS to brick your phone (if you're S-ON, that is). I think you misunderstood. This device is much more locked down than the OG. "Forget everything you think you know."
But at this point, the downgrade method isn't supported (yet). I already bricked my Jewel trying it (granted, that was after the downgrade was completed successfully, but still).
The team that put together the downgrading tool is still working vigorously on confirming a method that will work reliably with the new HBOOT. Stay tuned.

^^^ This. The OG EVO and this phone are not the same. What worked on one won't necessarily work on the other. Just wait for an S-off exploit for the new Hboot, otherwise you'll end up with an expensive paperweight, like the Captain did:banghead:
