Hardware related bug, hoping to bypass it completely.
Started happening about 2 months ago.
problem: When headphones/bluetooth are not connected, my microphone on the phone will not work. When either are connected, both the headphone/bluetooth microphone are working at the same time. I've been using bluetooth to place calls this entire time, Person on the other end gets a constant echo, if I cover up the phone microphone the echo stops(and they only hear what comes from the bluetooth headset).
I've flashed multiple roms, it seems to me like this is hardware related, but for the life of me I can't figure out how this seems to have got reversed in functionality (microphone on the phone should mute when headset is attached, not unmute)
Anyways, I'm perfectly fine using bluetooth, I never use my microphone on my phone for voice searches (I'm a southerner, it just doesn't work... yall.) i also never record videos. So, anyone know how I can keep the phone microphone muted full time?
That sucks
The same thing happened to my fiance's eris. I tried everything i could think of... its a hardware issue. She also had a problem with her track ball at the same time, it would not scroll down, only up left and right. She ended up getting a new phone, because nothing else worked. Sorry for your luck. Let me know if you find a fix.

Thanks for the response. I'm 100% sure its a hardware problem. If I cant figure out a way to permanently mute the onboard microphone im going to buy a dead eris and just replace the little board with the usbport/microphone. If that doesnt fix it, I will see if it will boot up with that board removed completely. (have a battery only charger already.)
But before I do either, I would love it if one of the genius' around here (no disrespect, some smart folks on these forums) responded with a way to permanently mute it.
10 day bump in hopes that someone knows something that didnt see it. Wont do it again. *crosses fingers*
Today I noticed that although I have my wifi turned off, from time to time throughout the day it randomly turns on without me doing anything. Has anyone else experienced this? I'm thinking it may be some app or another turning it on, but I'm at work right now and don't really have time to troubleshoot it.

I too have noticed this. Here's a question that may blow away my theory - Do you use AT&T Smart WiFi?

Indeed I was using AT&T Smart WiFi. I just turned it off. We'll see if that seems to make any difference.
I use the dumb wifi (i set it on or off as I need to... need NFC tags now) and no problem what so ever.
Ok, so I stopped using Smart WiFi. I have not seen the wifi turn on randomly since.
Bet your battery life improved along the way...
Yeah, battery life has been improved. Although it's still not great. I'm waiting for a custom ROM to fix it, but Android OS uses like 54% of my battery. Pretty sure that's more than it should.

Just bought a second hand GS3 from ebay, the screen had a small crack but otherwise was meant to be OK. I put Foxhound ROM on (I'm just used to having to upgrade the rom) and am finding that the sound will work fine after a restart, but then, after it has gone to sleep all sound will stop working.
I've tried clean wipes/formats etc. and also checked all relevant settings I could find (including turn off all sound in accessibility, what an odd option).
I've tried two ROMs and three kernels.
I've tried searching google and xda for hours but haven't found anything that wasn't related to the headphone port; this affects both speaker and headphone, although when the headphone is in and the sound has died I can hear some strange static noises when it's meant to play sound, could be interference or a clue.
I've dismantled the phone and inspected for damage, nothing obvious. While dismantled I tried applying pressure to the speaker flex cable and various other IC's to no effect.
It really seems like a software glitch since it only happens when the device goes to sleep;
You can turn the screen off and unlock within 3 seconds and it will be OK.
If you wait 5 seconds with the screen off - boom, no sound.
Any ideas? Is there some deep idle sleep setting that kicks in after 3 seconds I can disable or some way to log audio errors or... something?
Thanks

May Be The Phone Was Damaged, Try Stock ROM
i'm downloading a different ROM now but it takes hours (rural australian phone lines...)
same result with a different ROM =/ I've fixed many phones, computers etc before but not sure what to investigate here, guess i'll dismantle it and see.
A second rom and kernel same result.
Seems to lose sound as soon as it goes to sleep (screen off), really seems like a software problem but can't find any other reports on this phone similar.
Help!
Anyone?
Looks like a software problem but can't say where you can look.. If kernel is not the cause..
Maybe hardware after all..

The only way I can imagine it being hardware is if it's heating an audio ic during boot to make a connection and then when sleeping it cools and the connection is lost. It's a long shot but if it's software why is it not happening to anyone else? No weird software installed or anything.

Does the sound still work through headphones (after the sound stops working)?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
no, it doesn't seem to be headphone jack related.
the only thing I changed (aside from the rom) that I can think of that MAY have done something is some network setting for my carrier (vodafone .au) - there was an option in foxhound rom or something, but I can't for the life of me remember what it was called, I googled it at the time to see what it was but have since lost the browser history, it was some feature of the phone network that stops sending requests to the network when the phone is sleeping or some such... I'm really grasping at straws there though.
can't seem to find a stock rom for Australia either?
updated OP with more info, sorry for the bump, i'll let this die if no-one's got any ideas.

I think you are talking about fast dormancy toggle.. But I do not think it will cause any problems.. Also as you have already done factory resets an app should not be a problem..
I can only think of hardware faults..

yes i just finally remembered it and tried disabling, you're right, no difference.
I'm having trouble figuring out how hardware could be the culprit though, since it's triggered by the screen off for more than 3 seconds, there's something in software causing it.. but you're right, why does it persist over a wipe then? argh!
Downloaded stock rom, problem remains
I have a strange Problem with my HOX+ its unlocked and rooted (but with shipped rom) and whenever i listen to music over the headset, the music stops randomly. It happens on several players and always the beats audio icon in the notification bar disappears. Is anyone experiencing that too?
I'm having the same problem. It only seems to happen when the screen is locked for me.

I've got the same problem too. I'm using viper rom. Happens when plugged in to my amped car sound system via AUX cable. Really sucks when your sound is being amplified and it drops out like that. Kinda ****s up the amplifier/speakers a little too.
Can we get any devs to look into this?
Also, can someone test to see if this issue still happens when using Llior's CM mod? Are you on international or ATT?
I'm on ATT.
Try to disable Power Saver mode. It surely can be related to this.
Yes I have discovered that disabling the power saver mode helps this. But it still happens sometimes. Someone pointed out that it happens less with the screen on. Maybe I should try to edit the minimum clock speed when the phone is in sleep mode? Viper sets it to 50 Mhz. Not sure what I should try setting it to.
If you could try this simple and safe hack : Click!
Worked out for many bugs. Let us know the result please.
Just tried the simple and safe hack. Looks like I did everything properly. Will test out the aux port later today in my car to see if it really did anything.
UPDATE: The hack didn't work. I did test the leaving the screen on trick though. That definitely helps.
It's a hardware issue. My aux port just died today. I hope I have some sort of warranty.
Unfortunately those thing happens. Hoping they honour their warranty, it's an hardware defect after all, it is not a software bug. Time to restore by default.
Let us know how it went.
Actually upon further investigation, a reboot made the AUX port work again... I still think it's a hardware issue.
Hey all, does anyone else have an issue with Bluetooth keeping the phone from going into deep sleep? I have my Z2 connected to my Pebble and the phone hasn't slept all day since taking it off of the charger. I never had this issue with other phones so just wondering if anyone else is experiencing this.

Bluetooth isnt something sony seem to care about
Hence why its stupid
I have this issue too on all my xperia devices and tend to keep bluetooth off when needed
Not sure about Pebble but I have bluetooth connected to my Sony SW2 and headset the whole day and I don't have an issue with phone not sleeping.
When connected to my car, I get wake ups with the notification for "throw" constantly telling me it's connecting, then stops, then starts again. Anyone else have this?

Mine did this in my MB .suv. It would eventually crash the Bluetooth and then restart itself. Quite annoying if I must say. Never had a phone with unstable Bluetooth.

That's interesting, but I was reading the sony mobile forums in Taiwan and there were plenty of complaints about unstable Bluetooth. I had hoped the first firmware update would fix it, but it didn't happen.

Yes I can confirm I also have this issue when paired with my Audi car stereo. Constant wakelocks draining the battery. Is there no fix for this. I think it is related to the downloading of the phone book but I have tried disabling this feature and it still drains.
Sometimes even after disconnection they continue until I reboot the device. They also stop if I freeze / unfreeze the Bluetooth share app using titanium backup
Sent from my D6503 using Tapatalk
For anyone who's interested I used the xposed wakelock terminator on Bluetooth share and codeaurora.bluetooth and the issue appears resolved with no obvious side effects

For who is keep having the issue, try to take a look to what is happening to my Z3.
I have no solution (yet??) but it looks to be very similar to yours with the Z2.
