Hello! I am new to this forum. I have a Samsung Vibrant (SGH-T959), which I successfully upgraded to Froyo.UVKA6. How do I upgrade further, to Gingerbread (Android 2.3)? I tried to Root my phone using that one-click rooting program, but I guess I was doing something wrong, and it didn't work (three times). Thank you for your response.
No official 2.3 yet
and no stable 2.3 (?) for normal daily use yet

Actually there is. Go to the development and find cm7. Im using it right now, and its crazy fast. There is another gb rom in the dev section also. The only thing that is not working is gps.

he said "no official 2.3" CM7 isn't official but i suggest the OP tries out CM7 its fast, a few bugs, that will be fixed by the dev team, but besides that... its great!
Since there was a samsung gingerbread leak for i9000 a few days ago. I imagine we will see a vibrant leak soon.

Thank you for replying to my post! I'm not sure how to get what you suggested. Would you please give me step-by-step instructions? (I am relatively new to this whole thing.)

With All due respect, perhaps you should just stick to 2.2 for now. While CM7 is a semi-viable option it is a bit more complex than flashing many of the more "standard" 2.2 roms.
Be patient, there are many custom roms you could look into that will surely boost your phones potential greatly while you wait for 2.3 builds to grow and develop.
Try out Bionix Version 1.3 (I believe) or Trigger 2.7. Those are my personal favorites. Right Now I am using a 2.2.1 Rom called Sweet Honey, which is great, but I haven't had enough time with it to give a proper judgment.
Look at the more stable options first, get used to things, learn how to use Odin, about download mode, the different recoveries, even about jigs (if needed); before you dive head first into this cesspool of amazing roms, kernels, themes and talented developers. There's a lot of options that are far less likely to brick your phone.
This thread is a good way to start.

TV-out is not working on this build either which sucks because wiimote works. just cannot seem to get both worlds working for some classic gameplay without toting a frign PC(laptops included) around.
im seeing atleast 2 ginger roms being released every day......whats the point of ppl just going to crazy development mode and releasing a variant of stock ginger rom...
but the point is clearly that most of us will use only miks cm7 or andy's cm7 or noejn's or ciaox(almost forgot xD) along with franco's kernel
I should also add, what's up with billions new threads asking/requesting/announcing for the same things again and again and again. It's becoming tiresome tracking the usefull info around here
Full Ack, it's better to have some devs helping the 2-4 Maindev's and having 2-4 very stable Roms and Kernels instead of having 1000 of Roms and Kernels which are crap.
These 2-4 Roms and 1-2 Kernels (or 2-4) are very stable, and People can change the Launcher if they dont like the Preinstalled Stuff.
Sorry, that are just my 2 Cents.
Its just started and you are telling it to stop. We wont stop until number crosses the froyo roms. I believe we have more than 20 froyo roms. So until its 20, dont complain.

And where is the Sense in having 20+ Roms, where are the differences just minimal ? (Like Cosmetic : Launcher etc).
Imho : Senseless
Newbies are loosing the oversight, if there is too much. Which goes to Noob Questions like : Which Rom ist the Best, my Rom crashed why ? etc blahblah. Aka a flood of Stuff, many dont like.
Again, i dont have nothing against new Devs....but as in Companies or OS-Projects : Why dont bundle the Power of them into just some Projects (If the Maindevs likes to have help).
i think that mik and andy should work toghether on a custom rom. imagine that

The difference is that most of those 20 froyo roms, each one was making a step further into p500 custom rom making. Development was growing back then. Just a few of the old...void/devoid, megatron, LOL, nessy, Light etc. Today custom development has come to a peak. If someone can make something new or different from what our current devs can do then bring it on. But all I can see is clones nothing more
Everything is goin to die down in few days, and only the best shall survive. I say its a fair competition and best will survive.

Yeah there must be development of gb Roms as this will lead to a great rom.

Yes!! the problem lies in clones being made, and no new ideas or innovations...
I support new ROMS being developed, but it only makes sense if it brings something new and exciting with it, after all ROM devs can have the top kernels out here in it and focus on customizing and speeding up there roms, while adding new features and ideas. Its just a waste of time and effort if it just uses gimmicky themes and mods

So that means nobody should make another one? or another kernel? everyone must go to andy's thread or franco's thread to write"yay!" "wow!"?
Personal opinion: mik's great but buggy for daily use, andy´s buggy and franco kernel is the buggiest ever

well you could also write "yeehaa!" "wooh00" "bring it daddy" and other lovely stuff
Besides joking...we don't need clones.
If you can make something new (i'm not saying better), something different or innovative, for example franco has customized the kernel, ciaox made openscript, mik ported CM etc etc then we will all be very glad to have it.
Thats why is called "Development". Unfortunately not anyone can do it. So let those who know how to do it, to do it properly.

Hiya! Okay, I'm quite experienced with Android now, and I know this is a noobs question, and possibly frowned upon, but I was wondering what the best Kernel and ROM for my X10 is?
I previously used an X8 with CM7 (2.3.4) v.138 HACKDROID, and I pretty much want the same awesomeness on my X10 but better. There are a load here, and the Master Thread doesn't have any recommendations like the X8 Master Thread (which recommends HACKDROID).
I just need a few pointers and I won't post a noob question again. This is all I pretty much need to know.
Thanks
DM
If your into Cyanogen, check out CM7-ZMOD, butter smooth. If you want a more Sony Ericsson feel, check out Wolfs 2.3.3 rom. Again, butter smooth.
There is not really any kernel options at the moment. SE hasn't released the sources yet.

Thanks. Yeah, its just like Hackdroid I found a 'Power to The People' Kernel by DoomLord, but it seems to turn off my signal, wifi and the USB cannot be recognised at all?
Only two quams with the ROM is lack of Governers - Not unless this Smartass one is good enough?? And the Volume in general is far too low.
Wish there was a Kernel to improve the ability even further. It's got the potential.
if you want a fast, reliable rom then j's cm7 j004 with doomlord's custom kernel can't be beat. until se release sources for gingerbread. this is the best custom setup around... in my opinion...

As I stated, I'm no expert, in fact, I could even be completely incorrect. I have however read other peoples responses to similar questions about SE releasing their kernel sources. They state that the Linux kernel sources, which are licenced under the GPL, must be disclosed within a certain period of time, which I believe to be 15 days.
Apologies for my somewhat limited knowledge about such licenses.

Even the new Achotjan CM7 released... Just checked it now. Looks pretty awesome. I'd say try ZMOD one or The Achotjan CM7 if you are a Cynogen fan. I was using Wolf's 2.3.3 for almost two weeks now and I'd say thats the best if you dont want to use Cynogen ROM... Cheers
I'm going to give Wolf's a shot, but I really enjoyed ZMOD's, but it could be better. The HTC Mod keyboard doesn't work on it sadly. I've just resorted to using thumb keyboard, its pretty good actually
Went back to ZMOD. It's amazing. Plus, the new kernels are making it a better experience now. Its running like lightning now. And the battery has improved too. Doomlords kernel is amazing

No you don't have to update your kernel, and no you don't have to wipe anything. The custom kernel is optional. I'm using stock kernel on 4.0.2.1 and its extremely snappy. I'm going to update to 4.0.3 tonight.

So, what's the best ROM / kernel combo for you guys?
Hi,
[Off-topic] I'm newbie into Android stuff and XDA (installed my first custom ROM a week ago), but I have been intensely following General and Development sessions recently.
Following the {X10}[DEVELOPMENT] - CM7.1.0 - FXP028 IN PROGRESS - FreeXperia Project topic, I see ppl still reporting issues and bugs. Seems to me there are still several adjustments to be done until a actually ready ROM comes out (Am I wrong, or been unfair with dev team?)
On the other hand, official CM7 (which I guess requires excellency on quality/performance/stability/functionality) was already announced.
So my doubt is: what to expect with this? Shall we expect a fully functional and stable Official CM ROM? If affirmative, how this affect release date?
Being less specific: How this whole development proccess starts from now?
Sorry for bad english.
i'm also interested on this. looking forward for a real cm7 rom

Look for other ROMs which are more stable... if you find FXP is unstable and not your cup of tea then download Xperia X10s ROM or feralab ROM or something else which is stable... BTW you talking about CM7.2 or CM9..?
CM ROMs take time to become stable because drivers and other things have to be written from scratch as those are sony's properties (IP) and Sony don't provide them to developers.... read up on things before you shoot questions

Hi guys
I'm coming to you guys because my wife finally gave me her OK to mod her p500. :-D so i'm am not new to this at all, I have a x10mini and a NEO both running on cm7.

So i already got it rooted and custom recovery running. And did a nand backup.
So now i need to know a few things, which cm7 rom is the most stable and full featured? Since this is my wife's phone almost everything should work.
Is a custom kernel needed? Or can it go with stock.
And do you flash kernels separate with fastboot or is it part of the custom roms, i believe i saw a cm7 rom together with a kernel to be flashed with recovery. An if not which kernel would you guys suggest fitting to the cm7 rom.
I hope that that wasn't too many questions and someone would take the time to awnser them.
Thanks

I would as many others will, recommend Mik-os's Cm7 port... its what ALL the other cm mods are built off for this phone.
The latest stable 6.5.8 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=946354
Then as far as a kernel, its up to you, the latest goldenleaf for ultimate battery life. The latest GBS, which is as i like to see it a blend from the ultimate performance of the straight franco kernel and battery life of goldenleaf (made by fserve, same person who makes goldenleaf) Both found here -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1227682
Or the franco kernel which has the best performance but probably not the best batt life.... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1049518
This is NOT to say that goldenleaf has crap performance, in fact i prefer it for its battery life and great smooth performance.... gbs and straight franco have a slight edge in synthetic benchmarks but probably not by much.
As far as flashing kernels its just like flashing the rom..... so after you have the rom flashed , reboot once completely, then reboot into recovery, flash the kernel zip just as if it was a rom, reboot out of the recovery, once to the os, reboot completely and your all good to go.
Thank you now i have almost everything i got to know.
what about baseband? as far as i know she has the old baseband. and the 6.5.8 ROM needs the new baseband right? should i do a offical FW update first to get the new baseband? or would i loose root?
i read that you cant flash basebands with recovery, only with fastboot? the fastboot toutouial looks preety complicated.
But also very interesting because you can't flash a kernel with recovery by sony only with fastboot and htc works also different.

nono, it's uses the old baseband. The newer kernel is not related to any thing about baseband. A very common misconception here by users.
camera isnt that important she had her birthday last moth and she got a digi cam from me

Camera isn't that bad at all.
Most important - do all wipes needed before flashing a rom
6.5.8 has the occasional google maps battery drain bug. I just got it few days ago.charged the phone to 100% in the evening and when I woke up 46%. I use maps from time to time so uninstalling it is not an option. all other things are perfect though.

That is a bug with cm7.... itself... not just 6.5.8, it has to do with force closing an app which is using a sensor.... either GPS or Camera, DO NOT FORCE CLOSE an app that uses either of those... as the sensor never gets turned off which causes the batt drain. simply close the app (home button, or short press back button) and turn off gps via the notifications bar.
Run CM7 6.5.8 and the latest goldenleaf, with launcher pro, its the smoothest experience out there on our phones.
Just wanted to let you know that everything went well. I had absolutely no problems. And i am very satisfied.
