[Q] Making changes to framework and backup Q's? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi All,
The latest carrier stock rom KF3 has just been released and I noticed it doesn't contain a dbdata partition. I'm assuming this is so you don't lose your apps and settings when you flash it.
Just a couple of questions though.
1. If I make changes to the framework on the phone eg. adding a circle battery mod, and one day decide I want to revert back to the original stock rom, will I need to find a different stock rom (one that contains a dbdata partition) in order to revert back to a stock framework? .
I vaguely remember having to do this with my SGS otherwise I'd end up with a boot loop.
If I need a different stock rom that contains the dbata partition, can anyone suggest one that I can download? I don't particularly want to download random stock roms at 500MB a piece looking for one that contains a dbdata partition to rebuild it
2. What exactly is backed up when doing a nandroid backup? Eg. Is the /efs directory backed up as well? Is the Framework backed up etc? In other words, what is/isn't backed up in a nandroid backup?

[Q] How would i restore these files?

hi guys,
Currently i'm very happy with villianrom 3.0 and i don't have any serious issues at the moment.
My question is relating to the orange stock rom backup i made from my i9100P...
Since this is a P model and has NFC capabilities, i want to know if i wanted to reinstate the original orange rom, what method/software would i use, to RESTORE these files from a backup i made a couple of weeks ago:-
boot.img
cache.img
data.img
system.img
nandroid.md5
Also would it be handy to upload these to the forum for others to have or is this backup only for my use?

Its a nandroid backup so its your phone and you use the same procedure to restore except choose restore in recovery .

No use as it is neither stock nor official rom .

i tried doing a restore when i ended up getting a boot loop with another rom. But CWM didn't recognise the files/folder.
Just for my own information, Is there a way to restore these nandroid files without going to CWM Recovery? i.e. is there an app that can do this?

How do you backup existing kernel manually?

In the past, I used SGS Kernel Flasher to backup a kernel before flashing new one. However, I'm on ICS now and SGS Kernel Flasher say it is incompatible and supported after loading it. I want to try new kernel but want to take a backup of existing kernel before testing new one. How do I do it manually? Do I just take files and drop it in zip? Also, what's the easier way to back it up?
I'm have paid ROM Manager, Titatium backup, and Root Explorer.
If you look inside a kernel zipfile, there is quite a lot going on in addition to just flashing boot.img to the boot partition. To do it right, you'd need to copy not just the boot.img but all other files installed, and on reinstall you would need to do everything the updater-script does with permissions, etc.
If you are on ICS, and I'm not mistaken a full nandriod also now backs up your kernel.
Nandroid backup, try the new kernel, restore if needed.

Nandroid Backup of XXLSJ Leaked Rom

I have been using various flavours of XXLSJ and one time or another have required restoring my nandroid backup. Funny thing is that when I do a nandroid restore, it does not really restore the image like it was before. Example is if I changed my battery icon from green to blue and then decided it was not for me. When I try to flash a mod that would get me back to green it does not work. So then I decide to do a nandroid restore and after restore, my statusbar has not been restored like when I backed it up. Still blue battery. Ha ha. It appears the systemui.apk was not backed up and the restore actually does not replace the preload folder or am I wrong.
I think that because of the file structure of the leaked XXLSJ it has a preload folder where all the system files go. And when I changed my battery to blue, I had to replace my systemUI.apk which was in the preload folder. My question is: Does nandroid backup actually backup the preload folder? Or does it just back up the system folder which contains links to the actual apps? This is the only answer I can think of. Guys I am sure you had this experience. I am using PHILZ kernel if that helps since this is the only kernel currently working with the leaked rom. Anybody care to comment? Hope we get some answers.
I have had the same problem, one time I make a backup then tried a mod I didn't like restored the backup but it was only partially reverted. Some new features persisted will some did revert.
So the backup system definitely needs updated to deal with the preload partition.

[Q] Question about nandriod backups

So call me a fool, but I've never made a nandriod when flashing roms and such, but want to do that now, but lets say I back up with one rom, then flash another rom, is there a way to only restore apps, contacts, etc with out any system files, or no? Thanks!

[Q] Nandroid Backup - what does it contain?

I'm considering momentary switching ro android 4.1.2 from Gingerbread. Althou i have great battery life, but i also have Note 8.0 with 4.1.2 and i like some features not included in 2.3.6.
Anyway, if i do nand backup via CWM or via stock backupwill that contain installed apps, system settings, apps settings, desktops, icons, launcher and its settings? What else? Is this backup something like creating ISO image of whole hard drive partition on PC, or I s it just firmware backup?
If so, is there any way to create image of everything i have in phone including apps and settings?

From what I've experienced, yes, it will. It's a mirror copy of your phone.
Everything except the modem & the external SD. Restoring one also won't help you if you have borked EFS/IMEI, do a separate EFS backup with kTool/similar as well.
