Im really freakin out right here. Feel like I messed up my entire recovery.
I was on a stock samsung firmware, then installed cf-root, was working like a charm. Switched back to the original kernel. Then I decided I wanted the Litening rom on my device.
I had problems installing it, for Odin did not work. Then I installed Rom Manager, and installed their recovery. That surely was a huge mistake.
Now I can't flash any kernel or rom (the phone itself boots fine though), it says e signature failed.
I can't flash back to my backup file made with the CWM app, after I put on CF/root. If I try to go back into the recovery mode using the CWM app, im getting the recovery menu from Rom Manager.
I can´t flash the kernel using Odin. It keeps hangin at setupconnection.
What should I do?
you should have read the CF-Root thread.
CWM Manager
Because of incompatibility with ROM Manager, I wrote and included "CWM Manager". This is a new app (as of March 30, 2011). You can find it under Applications -> CWM. It is much faster to use than manually booting into CWM and selecting these options.

I have got a complete backup of my phone, made with CWM. Is there a way to get that one back in place. Or is there a way to flash back to stock using Odin?
Go to wwwDOTsamfirmwareDORcom/WEBPROTECT-i9100.htm They have a database of SII stock roms. You can flash the stock rom using ODIN in download mode (home+power+volume down, while the phone is off). Follow the instructions on the site. If you need help picking a ROM, just ask me. This site is safe. I've used it before when I screwed up my VillainROM installation.
you should also uninstall rom manager. that should be the first thing you do.

First of all, i apologize if any of what i'm asking here is stuff that has been covered before. I have been searching myself for answers for the last several days and have found plenty of good info, but i am new to android and i think i need to ask some question to help get a base level understanding of what i need to do. I am a bit nervous about bricking my phone so i maybe haven't been as adventurous trying to get everything running as god intended.
Firstly, i have used and understand Odin, using it to flash roms and such. I have rooted the phone and installed ROM Manager and clockworkmod 4.0.1.5 on the phone, but when i boot into recovery mode, it is still on the android recovery 3e and i cannot do the update.zip, I get signature verification failed. Now i KNOW this is cause of the android recovery 3e, and i have found this issue has been encountered plenty before, but my confusion is in some of the solutions i have found. Mainly the terminology and how the steps directly apply to the phone. For example, I found on another forum thread :
1- Copy the Zimage from your rooted kernel and paste it to SD card of your phone.
2- Flash the Stock kernel via Odin to get rid of Yellow triangle.
3- Flash the Zip file (Zimage) via CWM which you've already pasted in Step 1.
i don't really understand what the zimage is. Why do i need it, what IS it frankly? Where do i get it or a stock kernel for my phone. Does versioning matter much? i read that for the most part the kernels are almost identical to each other, and the fact all i really need is for the android recovery mode to be 2e or whatever it is (so it will not do the signature check on the update.zip file), that i don't really need to pay much attention to the actual kernel version.
What i really need i guess is for someone to break it down for me and either explain the steps or give me a detailed step by step on how to get clockworkmod recovery working so i can proceed with the cyanogen mod running on phone (not enjoying touchwiz at all).
Again, sorry if i am giving anyone spasms at my noobish-ness, but i have been searching for my answers for a day or two now and i haven't been able to find anything that really tells me what i need to know.

That means you have not installed it flash CWM and \Root from here .

You are confusing yourself .
Flash correct CWM from above link .
Choose the custom rom and follow the instructions posted for that rom .

Thanks for the reply. I have been doing more reading and i think i am understanding the rooting process a bit better.
I looked at the link you posted (thanks for that, i saw the forum post for the i9000 but i never could find the i9100 post for some reason) and i DO have another question after reading through a good chunk of the posts on it.
There is no CF Root for my kernel, but the reply that was made to someone else with my kernel version was :
"Flash the Stock 2.3.4 ROM (XXKG5, XXKG6 or XXKG7) and root with CF-Root-XXKG6."
I understand that process and how it works but i thought you were only supposed to flash roms based on your firmware version? My KDD kernel version is running on 2.3.3
Will this cause any issues if i flash the stock 2.3.4 ROM?
Download cm7 zip for the newest nightly.
Copy it to internal sd card.
Flash any cf root kernel
Boot into recovery
Wipe data and cache, you will lose all your data on your phone, so backup sms (I recommend sms backup +), also you will lose App data so you might want to back that up first using something like titanium backup.
Wipe dalvik cache (under advanced)
Chose install zip from sd card
Select the cm7 zip
Reboot
If you get stuck at the boot screen go back into recovery and flash the zip again

I think i'm ok with the CM7 install process. I am probably going to wait until i really feel like i understand the whole process from front to back before i start messing with that though.
I can't get to that point yet however since i haven't been able to get CWM recovery working yet. I have the Android Recovery 3e, which will not install from zip files that aren't digitally signed.
So i'm trying to get CF Root installed and working, however, as mentioned in my previous post there is no CF Root for my kernel. I would like it clarified if it is ok for me to flash to a 2.3.4 stock ROM (i'm running 2.3.3) and then use a CF root for a the new ROM.
I was under the impression that this was not a good idea.
If i should not be doing this, is there a recommended way to upgrade my firmware to 2.3.4 so i can use a newer CF Root?

Pick a new stock rom, I would go for kg6, flash it via odin.
Then flash the kg6 CF root kernel via odin and you will have cwm recovery.
Don't put the pit into odin and don't tick repartition or update bootloader.
There is a good thread with all the info you need on flashing stock roms with odin and a list of all avaliable roms.

Hi,
I have rooted my phone using the quick root guide found here and therefore I have my stock kernel back w/ root. Do I need to install a cf root kernel?
Also, when the new ROM gets flashed how does one recover the apps and data lost?

Use Titanium Backup PRO for your app. You can backup all of them then restore on any rom.
Is there anything that Titanium Backup doesn't back up for which I need to use another application?

OK, I know this has been asked before but I can't actually find a working answer! Installed rom manager last night, didn't work I assume because of 3e recovery. Installed latest FW for SII and loaded CF-Root - still didn't work. Re-flashed (I assume that was OK?) with speedmod - still doesn't work. Is there a working solution to get rom manager working?

IIRC Rom Manager needs CWM recovery.
So flash a kernel that contains the CWM recovery instead of the original (3e) one.
Like, for example, CF-Root (CF-Root doesn't work with Rom manager), my one (v sig v - but not sure if it works, never tried, would be cool if you could and tell me ) or the CWM kernel from the CWM-initramfs-template thread in the dev section.

It does indeed need CWM recovery. Installed CF-Root but as you say, it doesn't work. Also tried speedmod but that doesn't seem to do much either!
Now, if I flash with yours for example, can I literally just flash over what I have now? I did that this morning with CF->Speedmod and my phone has already crashed once. Or is there a correct way to re-flash, such as putting the phone back to stock first?
I **think** its working as your kernel allowed me to turn off image verification and so ROM Managers update.zip seemed to install OK. Backup started anyway.
So.... the phone rebooted after backup by itself, is that normal? And, I assumed the backup would be on the SD card - it appears to be on the phone though under \clockworkmod\backup\ - is that right? Is that everything on the phone backed up (apps, settings, layout)? Can I restore that if I trash the phone completely?
Edit: OK, don't think its worked. When I reboot its still trying to install update.zip and failing :-(
Yeah like other posters have said, you'll need to flash a CWM kernel. chainfires kernels have CWM so I'd guess you're not actually flashing the kernel..

OK, put Hellcats kernel back on, didn't try and install any updates from Rom Manager and just got it to download a new rom. Rebooted phone and it instantly fails to install. Select install from zip, turn of verification and it worked!
Now, I see some features such as BLN support have now gone, I assume because the rom updated the kernel - can I now reflash the Hellcats kernal or could that screw the rom up?
To use rom manager flash this kernel
As it wont work with chainfires tweaked clockworkmod recovery in CF-root.
BLN is a kernel thing, if you want BLN use a BLN kernel, for example Ninphetamine (mysig) and use the CWM manager app you can find if you search the forum.
ROM manager will ONLY work with codeworx's kernel and that doesnt have BLN etc.
Thanks veyka - I'm a bit confused what Rom Manager is actually is doing (or needs to be able to do) now. Is it just trying to install a modified CWM?
As I say, using Hellcats kernel which has CWM built in already, I was able to use Rom Manager to download a new rom then manually install with CWM. So I'm not sure what Rom Manager 'working' would actually add to that?
And as per my question a few posts up, now I have a new rom installed (TK-Rom for now), can I happily change the kernel and have no issues?

A few days ago I rooted my phone, but I didn't install any custom roms to it. Today I installed Rom Manager from Market and from there I installed ClockworkMod Recovery.
The only thing I cant figure out now is how to actually remove it again. I found this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1227464, but doing what these guys says does not remove ClockworkMod Recovery from my Galaxy S II. I tried it three times now, and when I install Rom Manager from Market again it tells me that ClockworkMod Recovery is still installed (in top of the app after you start it.) I can even boot into it using the second choice in the app, without even touching to first one first.
Do I really have to flash the entire stock rom along with it's kernel to get ClockworkMod Recovery out of my way? I cant really find out anything about how to remove it from Galaxy S II, but I it would be great to know how to remove it just in case the phone ever need's a trip to the hospital.
This is the first time I'm playing around with S II, and I'm not very good at these things. Would be great if someone could help me out here.

Method depends on which model you have as the firmware you need to flash will be different
International or American seems to make a big difference. If you have an american model then maybe listing the carrier would help as well.
I tried to flash a stock kernel @nikzDHD, that was the content of the link I had in my first post. Didn't work. =(
Crap. I was hoping I didn't have to flash a stock rom since I'm already running it, but if that's the only way to get ClockworkMod Recovery out of my way I guess I'll just have to get it done.
The phone was bought in Norway, Europe and it isn't locked in any way. I flashed the kernel with Odin, so I would guess I could flash the rom with it as well? Is there any guides on how to flash a rom for the first time to Galaxy SII?

I just downloaded a file I found here: http://droidangel.blogspot.com/2011/09/i9100xwki4-android-234-samsung-galaxy.html. After extracting it I flashed it with Odin, and everything looked fine. That version var 2.4 and I used Kies to update to 2.5, everything working great.
Now, the only problem is that I'm still not getting rid of that ClockworkMod Recovery. It's seriously starting to piss me off, that ClockworkMod Recovery thing. What I did is quite simple. First I deleted cache from ClockworkMod Recovery, then factory reset, turned off phone and booted into Odin mode where I flashed the stock rom from Odin on my laptop. But why the heck is Rom Manager still telling me that ClockworkMod Recovery is on my phone? I can't really understand why this is just not going where I want it - Off my phone.

Found another rom somewhere out there, flashed it, same result. The only thing is, Rom Manager is showing that cwm still is installed, but when I click the button to reboot into it, it just show some kind of error-message. I guess that's good enough for me, all tho I can't understand why that Rom manager app is telling me that it's actually there. :S

I would just like to confirm if these are the steps to do a complete HARD reset (exactly like bought fresh from shop), not the reset set by phone itself.

You'll be able to find your stock firmware on Sammobile.com. Search for it on there & follow whatever instructions they have for flashing firmware downloaded from there. Then do a factory reset, and if the flash counter in download mode is showing anything other than no/0, use the jig to reset same.

I would like to know if this method worked for anyone and was the phone really turned back to the factory conditions or not
I am new to this and thinking of flashing a custom ROM trying to understand the consequences before i actually do the update.

ROM Manager is NOT compatible with CWM. It f*cked up my phone before. It somehow gives you two recovery images. For example, going to recovery mode from ROM Manager will take you to its personal CWM Recovery Image. But if you go to Recovery Image manually (Volume Up + Menu + Home), you will also be taken to a different CWM Recovery (the one you got by installing CF Root or a custom ROM with CWM Recovery... I know these based on experience. So what I do is that I only use ROM Manager for downloading stuff. And manually go to CWM Recovery (or use CWM Manager app) for backing up and restoring ROMs.
Unfortunately, I don't think you can remove CWM Recovery without getting rid of root. Some form of custom recovery always comes with a rooted device.

I rooted my Samsung Galaxy S II (Sprint) right after I got it in 2011. Recently I upgraded to the SGIII so I want to remove my ClockworkMod and restore to Factory so I can sell the phone.
I've seen some instructions like "Flash with Stock ROM". I agree with others... sorry but that info just confuses me more.
Can anyone provide instructions? Clear, simple instructions? I tried finding stock firmware at SamMobile but I had no luck. How do I find the stock ROM for MY phone..a Sprint Samsung Galaxy S II? How do I know if it is a P3100 or other?
Then ...once I have the Stock ROM, how do I "flash" it..what else do I need?
Then..steps to follow.
If you don't have time, do not reply. Like I said, "flash with Stock ROM" doesn't help me. If you can provide the info and steps, I'll be eternally grateful.
When I start up my phone and press Volume Up, I get the ClockWorkMod Recovery v5.0.2.7 screen. Does that mean my phone is still rooted? If so, how do I remove the CM Recovery?

Doesn't CSC or any other single one of the 3 files be enough to flash? Do we need to flash modem also to get the stock recovery back?
PS: none of the experts here could extract and make a flashable stock recovery installer, as a sample if not for each stock version?

I have tried to find an answer to this question on XDA forum and tried to google it as well, but came up with nothing. So if it has been answered before, I apologize in advance.
I have rooted my i9100 using CF-ROOT. I was running XWLP8 so I used the corresponding rooted kernel and all is well. Currently I am using Resurrection Remix latest version.
No I want to have official clockworkmod touch recovery on my phone. I have installed ROM Manager and downloaded recovery-clockwork-touch-5.8.1.5-galaxys2.zip from clockworkmod website. I flashed it using CWM that came with CF-ROOT.
This is where things go wrong. After I flashed the new recovery and tried to reboot into recovery from ROM Manager, I got a blank screen. Tried to press some buttons but it gave me an intermittently flashing white screen, nothing else.
I tried to reboot normally again but it wouldn't do that either. I guess it was a soft brick.
So I had to flash CF-ROOT kernel using Odin, and then flash Resurrection Remix again. After that, things are ok. But now I am reluctant to try the new touch recovery.
So my question is, has anyone encountered this before? If so, is there a proven way to this?

Rom manager doesn't work on S2.
Get the zip file and flash using cwm as normal and it will be updated to touch.
NOOOOOOOO DO NOTTTTTT use rom manager.
That thing is responsible for so much damage over the last 12 month, it sucks big time.
Look whats the issue here, if you have flashed cfroot kernel then you alread have a version of recovery on your phone which is no different to the official cwm recovery, get the same things, and you get the cwm app in ya app drawer, very very powerful little rom and kernel flashing tool indeed.
SO, what is it you really want, at a guess id say, you really want to the touch recovery, because the normal one isnt going to give you anything different to what you already have.
Goto the recovery site or use google to find it, download the latest version for your phone, stick it on the root of your sd card, reboot to cwm recovery that you already have, and choose to flash zip.
Done.

Please let me explain in detail:
1. I had original ICS and flashed CF-Root with ODIN
2. Flashed new JB-Polland with ODIN
3. Lost root access and CF apps
4. Re-flashed CF-Root, CF apps and root access granted
5. Opening CWM i get the following msg: "This version of CWM should be used with CF-CWM v1.1" Now from reading other posts, i think this error is due to CF-Root not supporting JB.
Therefore what are my options?
1. Can I flash a new root over CF-Root, that supports JB.
2. Do I do the triangle away and try to clear CF-Root
3. Any other suggestions?

Whenever I'm flashing a ROM, I flash over the previous one.
I installed CF-Root, flashed MIUI, didn't like it so flashed CM10, didn't like it so flashed to stock again then reset my flash count to 0.
Or use it as is. Everyone who uses CF-Root with JB gets that message. You can still perform backups, updates and ZIP installs through CWM recovery.

Depending on what you are flashing, what is on the phone will be "overwritten". For example if you flash a kernel you will replace just the kernel, if you are flashing a full rom, everything that the rom contains will overwrite its equivalent in the phone (which is why you needed to reflash the root).
If you want to ensure you can get back to original state you needed to have done a nandroid backup at the beginning from which to restore later.
