Hello,
Could you explain me, how can I get best possible quality of photos ? I mean, I can read here and there, that X10 has got really, really good camera with 8MP and so on.
Thruth is, though, that I can't get any photos with reasonable quality. I mean picture is blurred and in locations inside house, photos are rather dark.
I really like this phone but I also have HD2 with Android and looking at picture quality of photos made on these two phones I'm positive that HD2 makes far better ones (in spite of its worse specs).
Buy vignette software -with the appropriate settings and a bit of picture taking practice by you(you need to learn how to use it properly).
You can produce high quality pictures with vignette, much better than stock camera app that comes with phone.

Or best of all, use this camera mod thanks do 28spawn
Thans for advices. I'm using camera mod v10 but it's still not quite what it should be. Maybe I just must get used to

Try fxcamera or 360camera from market. Both are better than stock.

vignette is the best by far
Use spawns but use touch to capture mode it made my pics much clearer since it was really easy to hold the camera still

I think that in the X10's case, the phone's camera hardware is better in quality than the stock camera software.
I too had lots of high hopes for the built-in Sony Ericsson camera app. Unfortunately, although many of the pictures I took seemed to look okay on the phone screen, they were actually terrible when a computer or HDTV screen revealed the blurriness of them all. The speed in which the app captures an image is just too slow, particularly if I tried using the actual camera button on the phone. Even with image stabilization enabled, I would rarely get a decent picture. Using the touch capture feature helps a little, but not much. Taking pictures indoors generally yields the worst results. I've taken some good shots outdoors as long as the lighting is bright.
My favorite camera app is Vignette. With so many options to choose from and so many high-quality effects, it is the best one out of the few I've tried off the Android Market. The only thing I don't like about Vignette is that by going full resolution plus using its 'superfine' quality mode, it can take a while to process after you've taken a shot and start to save.
We're not alone in the hard-to-use stock camera app department, though. My girlfriend has an HTC EVO 4G (known also as the HTC Supesonic), and the indoor pictures she takes with her stock app often has similar blurriness issues as the X10.
I still use my Sony DSC-W290 or DSC-TX7 point-and-shoot cameras if I want better quality, but the X10 and Vignette will do in a pinch.
Thank you very much for all the answers. I'll try vignette, fx, 360 and spawns. Hope it will change my current opinion, which is similar to xdadevelopers1222's point of view
So I am loving my photon. Have had it since launch day, and the one thing I am less than happy with is the camera performance indoors. Both my epic and evo shift 4g took good pictures indoors, but it seems pretty hit and miss with me and the photon. I cant decide if I should return it and wait for the Galaxy S2 or if maybe they will improve the camera software in an update.
Example as to what I mean with the pictures.
I took a picture, with flash on and settings in auto on my friends atrix, and side by side with my photon. The picture looked more natural on his screen, but on mine, the colors were weird and it wasn't focused very well.
Thoughts?
Only giving my opinion because no one has answered this yet.
I have noticed that the camera is not great indoors. However, one must remember that indoor shots are difficult even with good cameras because of the low light.
But since you are comparing your shots to another phone, all I can say is that hardware is different. Hard to say what is causing it and whether or not the camera on the Atrix is really better.
What I would do if it was me as a first step is to call Motorola and ask them why the camera sucks compared to the Atrix and see what they say. Maybe someone can shed some light on things.
If not, might just have to bite the bullet and buy an app such as Vignette from the Market if you can't get the satisfactory settings on the stock camera app. It might have some set profiles you can use that would make the pictures come out much better. I did see that someone posted taking pictures on the Photon with Vignette produced really good pics but don't know where the shots were taken.
Again, I'm not that knowledgeable on this so these are just suggestions.
I think it's because the flash is less than white. I think it actually gives a more natural picture and looks less like a flash was used. You can edit the photo after you have taken it on the phone. Moto built in some decent editing software in the gallery view.

The Photon actually takes the photo before it finishes focusing causing pics to look really bad. Having played with several Photons, I decided to just use Vignette (from the market) instead. Pics now look outstanding.
My comparisons were done between EVO 4G & MoPho. Hope that helps.
I would say that my HTC Heroc's camera is better then the MoPho which is a big disappointment. It's also worse the the Evo 3D's which I played with for a month. The crappy pictures aren't just indoor, they also aren't very good on clouldy days. Is there a better camera app out there that can take nicer pictures or any roms that have camera tweaks?

sorry bro.....photon....ergggg....all moto devices always have the wroste camera on phones soo :S....you have no lucky to that
I just downloaded the free version of vignette and the photos are much worse than the stock camera. I mean real bad. Is the free version not so good?
Photos colors are way off.
vignette free sucks because it only saves effects in .3mp, however the full version can take forever to process the effects. luckily you can just keep taking pictures and it processes in the background. btw vignette is better than stock.

Vignette only helps so far. What we need is an update from Motorola that addresses the camera issues. But Motorola is silent when it comes to the camera...
I have recently been looking at the photos out of the Nokia N8. If only my MoPho could take images like that!

The problem I have with the default camera app is that on anything but the brightest of sunny days everything looks blurry. Vignette seems to be much better in that regard. At least inside pictures are fairly sharp.
I'm really feeling Camera ZOOM FX right now, pictures are really nice and sharp indoors. The steady shot give you a readout of the accelerometer and wont take the picture unless you've been stead for 0.5 , 1 or 2 seconds. It's $0.10 on the market today and I would strongly recommend it. The only problem is you don't seem to be able to change picture quality settings.

I find the Photon camera pretty decent, actually is the best camera I ever had on a phone. For the low light issue thing I would just like to say that it does not take the greatest pic on low light conditions but what actually makes it worse is the Pentile display (and I'm not saying is not a good display like most people), because if you transfer your pictures to your computer you can actually see that the pictures aren't as bad as they seems when you view them in your Photon.
As for camera apps I use Camera360 Ultimate and HDR Camera+
I really don't like camera zoom because you can't save pictures in actual resolutions. (at least when I used I couldn't get them) Maybe they fixed that now.?
Is it me or does our camcorder suck?? I recorded my dog in the house blinds were open and everything so I can have light in the house but my video still came out dark which is crazy really starting to think our camera is wack I love the phone don't get me wrong but I'm considering trading it in I mean its like I have to be outside to get decent quality....in the daytime anyway

Maybe too much light or cam was pointing the bright areas. All cameras will do this. The shutter is taking in all that light.

I'm a professional video producer and hobby photographer. I haven't tested the Evo 3D's camera for video yet, but the problem you described is common in all auto cameras.
When a camera is automatically adjusting exposure, shutter, iso, etc. it adjusts for the brightest dominant subject in frame. The camera thinks you want everything perfectly exposed and is programmed not to blow out the highlights. So, what happens is it sees the bright window and thinks "ok, lets expose to that so it isn't a white blob." If you want to avoid this type of thing, lighting has to be as even as possible to the windows (which is almost always impossible) or you frame your subject without the window in the background. You also avoid this by using manual exposure settings, but I'm not sure how much control you'll have on the E3D.
What I would be weary of is the bitrate the E3D records video at. HD is only a resolution, but if it's a crappy bitrate, the video will look like crap. If you're not familiar with that, search youtube for some sample clips of videos in different bitrates. This probably can't be adjusted in the settings, but might be adjusted with some development if this is lacking. I remember when I was on my Samsung Moment which was android 2.1, that was adjusted in the build.prop but I don't know if that's the same here.
EDIT:
Some examples of what I described -
Bitrate comparrisons:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xNG6gw4cxU
Some background to the above clip, this is testing the Q scale of a hacked firmware for a DSLR. The Q scale is just the piece of the firmware that controls the video compression/bitrate. The lower it is set, the higher the bitrate it uses. He starts at about a 44Mbps bitrate in the above video and moves down to about 10Mbps or lower. I'd be surprised if the E3D records even 2 or 3 Mbps. But if you jump from the beginning to about 1 min 30 sec. you can see the difference more. Watching it through, the changes are so subtle you might not notice much.
Couldn't find a video to demonstrate, but this forum post about the subject might help:

No problem. There's a lot to factor into better low-light picture. The tiny lens on mobile phones doesn't help. The new Mytouch HTC just released this summer has a back-lit sensor which lets more light hit the sensor, for example (the sensor is built backwards so the wiring is behind it - in a nut-shell). It's like a "duh" technology but JUST emerged recently. A lot of cameras compensate by adjusting the ISO (digital equivalent to film speed or sensitivity to light) but that causes more noise/fuzz to appear. You may want to try that though if you can for video, I know you can on photos. But feel free to ask me anything about video or photography and I'll do my best to respond. I don't sign in to XDA often, but I'd be glad to exchange emails or something.
Turn up the exposure, under image adjustments.
Does wonders for me.

Hey guys I was testing our 1080 p and noticed that our camera was horrible when looking at things with lights like a TV screen or something you really couldn't see anything on there it just looked very bright. It happens when your filming people and there's a light in the background also it just shows up as a huge glare and its horrible. It's on all roms and I think its just the camera in general. My friend also has this phone and I tested it and it resulted in the same thing. Light sources are being shown to much I guess and trust me it's horrible to try and show off your phone and claiming to have one of the best phones in the world and your camera 1080p is filming horribly. It's retarded as hell and up until this discovery I've had no complaints about this phone. So my question is what can we do to fix this. I've tried lowering the EV Control to negative 2 and it still gave the glare. Do we have to wait for an update to fix this problem or what.

meanwhile, as a workaround i use 720p mode that somehow makes video kinda okay.

This problem can not be fixed.
The detector has a limited dynamic range- smaller pixels have lower dynamic range. The lens needs to be small, otherwise the device isn't pocket friendly. Lens size must be matched to pixel size, so even if a manufacturer wanted to include a high dynamic range imager in a cellphone, size-constraints make it unlikely.
It isn't realistic to expect a phone camera to compare in quality to a dedicated (and larger device) camera.

That's not relevant at all. There are multiple phones that have great cameras such as the Xperia arc. And I expect a device that outperforms others. That's why I bought this phone. And even my old Xperia x10 camera was able to cover white balance a lot better in certain areas. Our camera should be better. It takes great still shots but horrible video in lighted areas I guess. It doesn't make sense.

If someone could modify the Camera to accept tap to focus and exposure in video mode it would be perfect. That's what the issue is. However, I notice that during recording it is a LOT better than what it is when you just set video mode and look at it.

So why don't HDR apps work properly on our phones?
One manufacturer I contacted insisted that it was because the EVO 3D doesn't utilize the android api properly to adjust the exposure setting. I even confirmed this with HTC. You can try it out as follows: If you open the camera app and play with the exposure slider in the options, you'll see that instead of changing exposure, what it does is just bumps up the brightness of the image.
HOWEVER, yesterday I noticed that the exposure does change properly but not when you use the slider. Best way to try this is sitting next to a window on a sunny day. If you point the camera towards the window, the exposure auto adjusts you can see the details outside but anything inside the room still in the frame just looks dark. However, if you point the camera so it's mostly pointing inside the room, you'll notice that the exposure auto-adjusts again so you can now see details of objects inside the room but any part of the window still in the frame is now completely washed out. So..auto-adjustment of exposure works.
Now in most of the these HDR apps work by taking a picture on high, medium, and low exposure and then stitches them all together. However, the app isn't able to adjust the exposure settings properly and this is probably because it's tapping into the "exposure setting" in the camera's api...the same thing we are able to change when using the exposure slider on the camera app. As I said before though, the exposure slider is actually controlling the brightness. But I'm now certain that the camera is actually able to adjust the exposure but only does so through auto-adjustment. What's broken is the ability to set the exposure manually. How would one fix this?
where should i post this to get the attention of the devs who might know how to fix this?
The issue is it is a hard question. lol I don't have any idea. haha. I think the issue is we have two front cameras.

Interesting... I've used a couple of hdr apps on gingerbread and they appeared to work. Although I didn't do rigorous testing. All I did was compare normal pic against hdr app and I noticed a difference. However this was last summer. Maybe something changed since then.

Oh and the stock camera app in ICS, or at least in the couple of roms I've tried, has hdr as a feature. Except it isn't true hdr I don't think. It snaps 1 pic then processes it. I didn't think there was any difference at first, but I did notice a slight improvement.
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA
There will always be slight differences between stock vs HDR pics because the HDR app usually does some post-processing however, if it's not taking 2 or more pictures that have the exposure adjusting drastically, you're not really getting the HDR effect.
Yes, I know about hdr... The processing and everything. I just hadn't tested these things like you have and sharing my experience.
Anyhow... I had also read others claim htc didn't use the app right months ago. Not sure why they messed that up. I'm going away for the weekend and might mess with this myself. If I see anything worth adding I will.

That's excellent news! Are you sure the exposure setting works properly and doesn't just change brightness? I know you probably tested it before posting but if you could do this for me and write back, i'd really appreciate it.
From inside a room from a distance, point camera towards a window. Are you able to see detail inside and outside the room by changing the exposure slider to either extreme?

I haven't had a lot of time to play but it did work. I'm a photographer and video producer so I know what to look for. My quick test however was as a passenger in a car. I pointed it to the seat where part was in bright sun and then other was in shade, plus some of the frame of the car in shade. Stepping down showed the detail in the seat in sun, increasing it showed it in the shadows.
I also tried hdr + (I think that's the right one) and each of the 3 photos was at a different exposure, granted not by much.
There is still a bug where the front camera flips the photo left/right after it's taken, however, you only seems this after reviewing the pic.
Edit: the app was hdr camera

awesome, perhaps HTC got around to fixing it in ICS. Several months ago, I actually contacted them describing to them what was wrong with the camera. After a lot of back and forth and escalating the issue internally, I was finally able to reach the team that actually works on the stuff and they confirmed the issue and said they will include a fix "in a future release" but did not make any promises. Maybe they got around to it
I'm going to have to flash a ICS rom to test this myself once I find some spare time
