Inverse 3D - HTC EVO 3D

Anyone notice that on youtubes 3d videos sometimes you need to look at the screen at a slight angle because if you look at it straight on the 3d will be inverse? This is only for some videos, I'm wondering if there is a reason for this, left and right images swapped or something.

Someone said that viewing it with the bottom of the phone to your left accounts for that....

The side by side encoding is reversed from the way the evo 3d screen handles it. The YouTube app really needs an update to give us options to address this. The website version of YouTube lets you click the 3d option on the player and change things like swapping the side by side, switching to anaglyph, etc.

Something still tells me, that it has more to do with the user taking the video's, and as i have noticed when they take pic's, seems everyone is really different. I have seen a good bit of really great video's on youtube that xda member's have taken, then some not so great, so i don't think personally it's youtube, same goes for still pics have seem some amazing stills, even the one's i have taken turned out clear and crisp looking 3D.

Since there isn't a boatload of 3D content available yet, I figured I'd start a thread where we can share the 3D content we've made with each other. Here is a video I made of my friend's salt water fish tank the day I got the phone, and it looks awesome! He insisted on keeping the lights in the room off because the "tank is prettier", but due to the low ambient light, the image is sometimes blurry while the lenses focused, but most of the video is very good.

Sorry, but I had to zip it up because if not, the link would start playing the video directly on the phone and it would buffer a lot.

I can....I'm uploading it now. I wanted to offer the option to download the file directly because with a slow connection, the video will buffer a lot. When it's done uploading, I'll add a link for YouTube, too.
Edit: YouTube link added to OP.
great video, watched it on my pc with glasses.. nice fish tank if its yours too
Oh, you saw it with glasses? I'm dying to see what the videos look like that way. When the fish cross the screen, do they pop out at you?
That's my buddy's tank, by the way. He's still setting it up (according to him; I don't know much about salt water tanks) and he plans on adding a lot more fish and live corals. It is a very nice set-up, though.
They pop out a little bit, there is a definite depth to the whole tank with the fish being in front of it though and unlike a lot of the videos I've seen with these glasses the colors look great.. the fish stand out a lot.

That looks awesome man. Tell your buddy nice tank. Salt water tanks are a ***** to keep up too. Peace my fellow Cubano
I played the video through my PS3, and it worked fine. Some of the camera motion resulted in a bit of blur (maybe from the camera trying to hold focus, not sure), but the fish looked good and the tank had some impressive depth. The coral was very cool.
From an artistic standpoint, it seems like less overall motion would result in a better experience. Foreground motion was not a problem (fish), but when the whole scene moved, it was a little blurry.
I found the mpo file format works better for pics on the pc with the red and blue glasses.

what color glases do you need to see the images in 3d on your computer? the red blue, or magenta green, Im guessing the standard red blue, but not sure.
Look at this picture through your phone. Its sooo trippy, the flowers are popping out at you. It takes a few seconds to focus
So when we upload 3D pics/videos we can view them in 3D on a computer or TV with the aid of 3D glasses? Just want clarification on this. And as someone said earlier do we just need red/cyan glasses?

The same thing happened to one of my friends, but I don't know why. It works fine on my phone. He said that he went to YouTube via the browser and was able to see it, but using the YouTube app he got double images. Very weird. YouTube app works fine for me with this video.

I could not agree with you more. This was the first video I shot with it.....we'll have to keep this in mind in the future. However, as in the OP, the low light in the room was not helping much, either. A fixed position or panning across the tank more slowly would have yielded a much better video.

Yup......I'm pretty sure the ones you need are red/blue. If anyone knows otherwise, feel free to chime in.
I view videos on youtube with left eye on the left, then view like a stereogram so your eyes relax
for mpo files I load them into Sterephoto maker (freeware) where I can view in the same way as videos or I can save them out as jpeg or jps and view in the same way. This software also allows you to view with any type of coloured glasses (orange/blue, cyan/red, cyan/green etc)
Personally, I feel if you can view a stereogram then you can view these files off the phone with no glasses

I couldn't get it to focus right. I think the pic was taken to close, maybe. I tried taking some 3D pics of some of the live corals in my boy's fish tank, but I would have to get really close and the pics came out kinda like this one.
I originally read somewhere that even with glasses you can't view 3D content on a non 3D monitor.

I don't see those options on the YouTube app, but using the browser they are there. Good to know! I always thought the "3D" was an icon and not a functional button.

Is it just me or is the 3d easier to se ethan reviewed

OK, maybe i have bad eyes, and according to the optometrist i do Anyway, point being, i seem to have absolutely no trouble seeing the 3d effect and i can see it from, not a wide angle range, but i dont have to be in the "magical" spot. Even all the photos and videos i took look great. Far better than the ones that came on the phone as samples. Lastly, the 3d content on youtube was awesome and very easily viewed to me. I am one to get motion sick easily and for some reason, i have no issues with this device. Like i said, maybe iim the exception, but i'm 110% satisfied with the device and the "gimmic" 3d
Yeah I think the 3d mode is pretty good. All though at extreme angles it will mess with your eyes.
I agree, 3d is very easy to see for me. It looks amazing too
I thought the same thing.
I played with a ds3d and hated it. Knowing that this phone had similar tech made me question its quality and ease on my eyes.
Well i can say now that the 3d is very good! Just got done watching green Hornet 3d and my eyes feel fine. I did fine myself loosing the 3d at times but I think that's cause I was looking at it for so long.
Pictures are a little harder to tune in and are harsher on the eyes, but the 3d affect is amazing! This phone is definitely a win in my book.

now...I think its cool for short recordings and pics, but theres no way im watching a whole 3d movie on it.
had to take aspirin after about 8 minutes of green hornet.
or maybe its just cause I think that movie stinks

Agreed, Worst Seth Rogan film ever. Hurts my eyes too.
Now the 3D effect, is bad ass! Yes you have to have it at the correct angle but with a Kickstand case, no problemo.
Last time I got my eyes checked, about 3 years ago, I had 20/15 vision so I would say that my sight is pretty good. The 3D effect is good but I find, at least for me, that the window is extremely narrow. It really has to be in the prefect position, otherwise it's nauseating.

I must admit the 3D is much better than I expected, especially after reading the early reviews. I'm fortunate in that I haven't had the eye fatigue or headaches reported by some. But as far as the 3D effect it is very good, even the pictures I've taken; and practice makes perfect. As mentioned above, holding the phone still in important.
The YouTube videos are awesome. I upgraded from the 4G to the 3D for the new processor and Sense 3.0; 3D was really not much of interest yet that is all I've been playing with since I got the phone yesterday.
At a price of $199 after rebates, why would anyone in there right mind complain about a feature you do not have to use anyway. It is amazing that this thing has 3d along with all of it's other top specs of any device and still came in at the price point it did.
The only thing they might have done different if they did not add the 3d in would have been to up the camera to 8mp but even then, it would probably be the same camera we have now but just shoot larger pictures so who cares.
I also bet all the people who screamed gimmick are starring at there phone right now trying to find anything in 3d to view.......
Although right now, I am starring at my phone fighting with myself if I should push the button to upgrade my software or wait to see if they root the non-updated software!
Anyway, 3d is a win on this device! Don't know how much better they could have made it and cannot understand how any reviewer can complain about the way it was implemented.....

[Q] Buggy 3D perfomance

The 3d images and videos on my phone doesnt really work all the time. The two images dont really line up properly. It seems like the phone is having convergence issues or something. The images look somewhat 3D but there is a lot of double images and ghosting. Nothing like when I got it out of the box. The 3d effect was perfect. Sometimes a hard reset will tame it, even tried a factory reset but the problem keeps coming back. Does anyone else have this issue?
i too have this issue.
My hypothesis, is that it cant or didnt auto focus correctly
EDIT:
Also i have the "out of box" software. these OTAs might have fixed some 3D rendering software

i went to a baseball game yesterday and took some pics... i seriously have to cross my eyes to see a solid picture. it seems the 3D camera works well for pics between 3 to 50ft away, anything farther seems to strain your eyes when trying to focus. The players were doubled (with lots of space between them) and focusing before taking the pic isn't that accurate(even in 2D), the samsung galaxy s has much MUCH better focus abilities. Took a pic of the city skyline and it wasn't as crisp as i thought it would be
i hope software updates in the future improve this (ie the camera from the new mytouch)

I have all the OTA updates. It's a real problem and I think more people have it than realize. But as long as its a software issue I can hold off on trading it in. My handset is perfect as far as build, so if its not fixed in a few weeks I'll just exchange it as defective.

Another symptom is that 3D pictures in the gallery don't work in portrait. It just shows the two pictures interlaced together with no 3D effect at all.

You can adjust the image after you take it. Use the magic wand and align 3d image. Pretty simple.

I've seen a video on youtube that looked like you describe, but it seemed to be a fluke, most of the other things looked as I'd expect.
Our cameras are fixed and can't adjust for different distances like our eyes can so the 3d effect will be lost of trying to capture somethin far away....
As far as 3d in portrait it works but it wasn't meant to be seen that way
Bussin Caps n 3D
I've notice this also but I call it a bad take on a picture. Just like it was stated above the camera might not have focused correctly. Usually another take does it. And I've noticed that looking at 3D content doesn't strain my eyes like before because I trained my eyes for this this type of media. Now I could see a 3D pic in an instant.
My ''xDU4L C0R3 SH00T3Rx'' shot you down in 3D!
Nah its not a bad take and pictures are being taken properly. I know this because after a hard reset everything shows up fine for a minute or two before reverting back. (3d effect in landscape but not spaced properly so lots of ghosting and double images, no 3d effect AT ALL in portrait just shows two interlaced photos.) I know the 3d isn't optimal in portrait but its not working for me, period.

Anyone Over the 3d Feature Yet?

I think the 3d fun has lived a short life. I don't find myself shooting 3d video's or taking 3d pictures anymore. If the 3d had more of a pop out of the screen look, then maybe but most of the 3d available just looks like a hologram.
The thing that really convinced me I am over it was playing Asphalt 6 3d. I decided to put it in 2d mode so I can use the tilt feature to steer and then realized how much crisper and clearer the picture was and the colors were just beautiful. It made me really appreciate the 3d's screen. Put it back in 3d mode and everything just became so bland and dull with a hologram effect. Maybe if the car popped out of the screen or something it might seem much cooler, but until we start seeing things like that, I won't be purchasing any more 3d items.
At least it will be easier to jump ship in the future to a non 3d phone as I thought it would be something I would miss in the beginning.
Now after saying that, at least I still have a beast of a phone to play with!
Anyone else starting to feel the same way about the 3d and starting to use it less and less?
Hell no. I watched transformers 3 in 3d and can't wait for that. An avatar 3d.
The phone is awesome for 3d movies.
The games is so so.

3D is a bonus with this phone, and shouldn't be the main reason to get it. Mostly mine is used to show the phone off to friends. That and the printing capabilities. It took me 5 minutes max to get over the unique 3D experience glow. When I can lay the phone flat on a table and watch a movie play out holographically atop it I'll be impressed.

So confused why people think if it would think that if the 3d would "pop out" then it would be better. I think that looks cheesy and holographic. 1) you want that get creative and try new angles. It will have the effect. 2) Glad it doesn't I would have to wear glasses. to use and play with my phone.
sorry I'm a big fan of depth of field, and not Back to the Future II where Jaws pops out of the screen and tries to eat him.
I find myself taking almost all my pictures in 3D as I can convert them to 2D But I would hate to take it in 2D and later say Dang I bet that would have been awesome in 3D

For me I was over it a few hours after purchasing it. 3D didn't play any part in my purchasing my 3Ds. The other specs had me drooling. I've gotten mostly good reviews from people who I have told I had the 3D and showed them some scenes from Avatar & Clash Of the Titans that I had encoded but for me 3D is a fad.

omg, the 3d is awesome! I wish the whole world was in 3d!
I love the movies but the games are lacking. I do get a bit of eyeache after a bit forcing my eyes to not focus farther away (through the screen) because it does look like the phone is my window into another world at times. I look away for a second and they feel better so it doesn't bother me to much. I think I will get used to it eventually
NOVA3D is great. (I have OC'd to 1.8ghz too) The shot's fired at you actually come "at you" so to speak. Also the guns being held have depth to them and the shotgun blasts are fun to watch.
Also I'm still taking pictures in 3d and 2d. I like to see the difference between the two. It's not even why I bought the phone, but it's really fun.
I see the 3D the same as I do the 4G...I don't use it all the time, but it's a nice feature to have.
I actually really like the 3D. Games are okay and pictures are pretty cool, but videos and movies are awesome. Although I don't always use it, I like being able to when I want to.

Camera preview issue

It appears that after you take a picture and the phone shows a preview that the image that is actually saved is a few milliseconds ahead or behind the preview... For example, I took a picture of my dog with his mouth open in the preview but when I look at the saved image his mouth is closed. I'll try to do a screenshot to demonstrate but I wanted to put this out there. Can anybody else confirm this?

Weird, it's definitely reproducible on my phone. If I slowly move the camera to the right I can tell that the preview is maybe a quarter second behind what's actually saved. I.e. if a chair is in the left of the screen in the preview it will be in the middle of the screen in the saved image. Bizarre. Still can't get the screen shot to capture the preview though, it's too slow.
