Camera preview issue - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

It appears that after you take a picture and the phone shows a preview that the image that is actually saved is a few milliseconds ahead or behind the preview... For example, I took a picture of my dog with his mouth open in the preview but when I look at the saved image his mouth is closed. I'll try to do a screenshot to demonstrate but I wanted to put this out there. Can anybody else confirm this?
Sent from my EVO using XDA

Can't seem to get the screenshot to catch the preview even when I set it to five second preview... I'll keep trying
Sent from my EVO using XDA

your dog is playing tricks on you
my camera has no preview issue

Weird, it's definitely reproducible on my phone. If I slowly move the camera to the right I can tell that the preview is maybe a quarter second behind what's actually saved. I.e. if a chair is in the left of the screen in the preview it will be in the middle of the screen in the saved image. Bizarre. Still can't get the screen shot to capture the preview though, it's too slow.

You must've gotten one of the defective ones...that's a really weird issue though...if its reproducible then try to take it back and get a new one

Same thing here. I just got used to not going by the preview at all as its a little different then the photo that's actually saved. I don't like to nit pick tho that's just me

[Q] Buggy 3D perfomance

The 3d images and videos on my phone doesnt really work all the time. The two images dont really line up properly. It seems like the phone is having convergence issues or something. The images look somewhat 3D but there is a lot of double images and ghosting. Nothing like when I got it out of the box. The 3d effect was perfect. Sometimes a hard reset will tame it, even tried a factory reset but the problem keeps coming back. Does anyone else have this issue?
i too have this issue.
My hypothesis, is that it cant or didnt auto focus correctly
EDIT:
Also i have the "out of box" software. these OTAs might have fixed some 3D rendering software

i went to a baseball game yesterday and took some pics... i seriously have to cross my eyes to see a solid picture. it seems the 3D camera works well for pics between 3 to 50ft away, anything farther seems to strain your eyes when trying to focus. The players were doubled (with lots of space between them) and focusing before taking the pic isn't that accurate(even in 2D), the samsung galaxy s has much MUCH better focus abilities. Took a pic of the city skyline and it wasn't as crisp as i thought it would be
i hope software updates in the future improve this (ie the camera from the new mytouch)

I have all the OTA updates. It's a real problem and I think more people have it than realize. But as long as its a software issue I can hold off on trading it in. My handset is perfect as far as build, so if its not fixed in a few weeks I'll just exchange it as defective.

Another symptom is that 3D pictures in the gallery don't work in portrait. It just shows the two pictures interlaced together with no 3D effect at all.
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
You can adjust the image after you take it. Use the magic wand and align 3d image. Pretty simple.
Sent from my Evo 3D using that one app for forums...
I've seen a video on youtube that looked like you describe, but it seemed to be a fluke, most of the other things looked as I'd expect.
Our cameras are fixed and can't adjust for different distances like our eyes can so the 3d effect will be lost of trying to capture somethin far away....
As far as 3d in portrait it works but it wasn't meant to be seen that way
Bussin Caps n 3D
I've notice this also but I call it a bad take on a picture. Just like it was stated above the camera might not have focused correctly. Usually another take does it. And I've noticed that looking at 3D content doesn't strain my eyes like before because I trained my eyes for this this type of media. Now I could see a 3D pic in an instant.
My ''xDU4L C0R3 SH00T3Rx'' shot you down in 3D!
Nah its not a bad take and pictures are being taken properly. I know this because after a hard reset everything shows up fine for a minute or two before reverting back. (3d effect in landscape but not spaced properly so lots of ghosting and double images, no 3d effect AT ALL in portrait just shows two interlaced photos.) I know the 3d isn't optimal in portrait but its not working for me, period.

Inverse 3D

Anyone notice that on youtubes 3d videos sometimes you need to look at the screen at a slight angle because if you look at it straight on the 3d will be inverse? This is only for some videos, I'm wondering if there is a reason for this, left and right images swapped or something.
Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk
Someone said that viewing it with the bottom of the phone to your left accounts for that....
Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk
The side by side encoding is reversed from the way the evo 3d screen handles it. The YouTube app really needs an update to give us options to address this. The website version of YouTube lets you click the 3d option on the player and change things like swapping the side by side, switching to anaglyph, etc.
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
Something still tells me, that it has more to do with the user taking the video's, and as i have noticed when they take pic's, seems everyone is really different. I have seen a good bit of really great video's on youtube that xda member's have taken, then some not so great, so i don't think personally it's youtube, same goes for still pics have seem some amazing stills, even the one's i have taken turned out clear and crisp looking 3D.

[Q] Gimped camera focus?

My amaze seems to like screwing with me when taking pictures.
The problem is simple.
Start camera application, tap or hold camera button to focus. As soon as it gets perfect focus it jumps back out. It will almost never stay focus regardless of setting.
have you ever tried tapping the screen, say for instance if you're taking a picture of someone, tap their face, and it should focus on where you tapped.
have you tried cleaning the lens? sometimes when the lens is dirty it messes with the focus when I try and take pictures.
I have the same issue.
At first I assumed that my settings weren't correct, tried a number of 'fixes' that seemed logical and here I am.
It happens more often than not, but 99% of my pics are my kids, you got ONE shot at capturing a great moment.
blurred...
I have taken random shots of random objects and nothing will keep the focus...focused.
One second brilliant clarity of HD candy as it zeroes in, and °dink° blurrrrrred again.
sucks, i ditched my hd2 windroid for this camera so any info, possibly a bug fix kind of thing is what I'm looking for.
My hd2 took pinkish pics, so I'm no stranger to 'gimped' code.

The extremely pleasing picture of a very mundane subject occured when the camera fired as I grabbed it up and knicked the softkey with my finger, my screen sensitivity is extreme (gotta tweak those values...).
Here's another wtf picture for the books...woke up at 5am for early contract, made coffee, reached for creamer.
Groggy and blinded by exhaustion, I confused the two because of the unfortunate placement.
Steamy espresso berry coffee.

try knocking your res down to 5mp, that helped my old phone, plus it made it quicker, and still had good print/display quality.

Possible camera defect/glitch

I'm getting a green Aurora over the camera in the viewfinder over light/white backgrounds and it's translating to some of my pictures. tested on a white piece of paper with flash enabled and still had green. Sample images attached.
Insight?
Should I return the phone?

Thanks for the reply. I was almost hoping for someone to come tell me it's normal. I'm only on day two of my thirty and I've already downloaded so many apps
Anyone want to try a test of a white sheet of paper?
Just tested on paper towel in a different room with different lighting both with flash and without.
It would be really helpful for a sticky with known defects so we can completely check out the phones for defects in one place.
I'm glad I didn't buy the phone off of Amazon. Would have made the exchange process a lot more difficult than driving down to the store...

Its your flash... Mine does it too, think about it though, there isn't nothing wrong with it its just that the light bounces off the white surface giving you that effect. Will only happen on a white surface, I say don't worry about it as its normal. It's normal we don't have high tech flashes... We have to live with it Haha
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717
Only two of all these test pictures have flash. The one with my hand where you can see it's shiny (flash).
And the top paper towel pic without the phone shadow.
All other pictures other those two were taken without flash. Green effect visible without flash. Seems to be slightly less notable with flash actually.

Looks normal to me. So this is a rare issue I'm guessing. Will try changing the options as suggested and report back.
Now that I have taken those few test pictures I'm starting to be convinced that my camera is defective. I'm using stock everything never messed with any camera settings. Pictures were taken with opening the camera app and immediately pressing capture along with trying to focus by tapping screen before taking picture. Green results both ways.
I'm just glad I haven't put my 35 dollar glas t screen protector on yet...

I went through three Notes (display issues), and they all did this. Every Note in my AT&T store does this as well. Every iPhone I've ever used does the same thing (except it's red instead of green).
I've always assumed it was normal for these types of cameras, because I haven't used a single device in many years that DIDN'T have this type of problem. I never notice it taking pictures because...how often am I taking a picture of a white piece of paper?

will update with new notes pictures
Wiped my phone and exchanged it. Right out of the box I tested the camera in front of the store rep. Same green issue. The green issue is also noticeable in the viewfinder for the camera. I didn't specify that before.
so the rep wouldn't let me take back my phone and made me keep this defective one. She rudely told me to go exchange it in a different store. I'm sorry I paid three hundred dollars and signed a two year contract expecting a functional non defective device. I'm guessing that stores batch all have the defect. But I tested both note display models in store and no green in either.
These are all the pictures I've taken with this new note with flash and without with default options as well as auto contrast and matrix metering.

Funky Front Facing Camera

Just got my s5 from T-mobile last night and shes beautiful

Your head may be defective, I'd take it back to a T-Mobile store and see if they can help you with that.
Perhaps if you posted a sample image (not necessarily of your face) to see if something it obviously wrong. The front facing camera does have a wide angle lens which might be what it causing you to perceive it as "squished." If you rotate the camera do you observe the same effect?
I knew one person would say that lol thanks for clearing the air Haha.. Anyways I'd be more than happy to share..
Also would like to add that I went to T-Mobile and all their phones including my friends front camera are doing the same problem it may be a glitch in the software. It's just how you angle it it had to be at the top of the screen or bottom.
Here is a picture of my face in the center and on the edge, I'll let you be the judge and try it on your phone as well. I am holding my phone horizontal for this one and it made my face wider if I hold it longitude my face will be longer.
Notice how the center picture looks perfect versus when you position yourself at the bottom or the top of the screen.

I think I have an idea about what you're experiencing, I always thought I looked funnier than I normally do when talking a photo with the front facing camera lol. I found that I look normal before taking the picture but then after taking the photo and when reviewing it something always looked off. I then found out about the "Save as flipped' option when you press the settings button while in the front facing camera mode. I turned that on and it was better, granted all its doing is flipping the image but it just looked so funny when that setting is off for some reason.
Try it out and see if its the same for you.
It's not that. When you have the phone in front of your face taking a "selfie", try moving the phone up and down as far as you can while still seeing the screen and have the camera on your face. You'll notice your face and head starts to distort.
Sent from my SM-G900T using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
My guesses:
a) The lens itself is distorted intentionally to fill the extra "widescreen" areas of your display with an otherwise 4:3 ratio sensor.
b) The digital picture is distorted intentionally to fill that same extra void when viewing a 4:3 ratio picture on a 16:9 display.
Think of the days when HD (720p) was brand-new. Some of the first broadcasts that were in "HD" were simply 4:3 ratio videos stretched on the sides to fill up that extra space on your TV (versus having the "black bars" fill it instead).
It could be that the front facing camera just isn't very good, poorly made. I mean it's 2.1 mp. People still use their back camera for selfie lol

Hey more knowledge to you my friend! I did a test with distance and I got the same distortion no matter how far i stood from the front facing camera, if I got near the top of the bottom of the screen, I would become bulging, and a little longitudinal.

You bring up a great point with the "widescreen" but it is 2014 don't you think they would have thought of a way to get a wider ratio with out distorting an image? This makes the front facing camera unusable to some. The HTC one also has a front widescreen screen camera but does not distort.

Hey good idea and it made a difference, I lowered resolution to 1.6 mp1440x 1080 and the effect was still there. 4:3
I put the resolution on 1mp 1072x1072 and the effect is completely gone. Ratio is 1:1
Then I put the resolution on what seems to be the lowest 640x480 .3 mp ratio 4:3 and the effect seems to SLIGHTLY be there by hardly noticeable.
For now I will be leaving it on. 3 mp it seems to be usable and not noticeable. But when I opened any third party applications that utilizes my camera like Snapchat it is distorted
