I've been on MIUI 1.6.24.1 and it's been working great. I tried upgrading to 1.7.1 and every time i try to flash I get installation aborted. I've downloaded it multiple times and I'm using CWM 3.x red recovery. Has anyone else had this problem or have any suggestions?
I think you have to use the yellow recovery. Not sure, though.

So how would I go about getting yellow on my phone? I can't seem to find a download.
You should already have it, open up terminal emulator and type su then type reboot recovery and that should get you to the yellow recovery.

I just tried that. It booted me into orange and when I tried to flash I got the same status 7 installation aborted.
Look at the first post in the cm7 waiting room thread in the general section, they talk about what to do to fix that.

OK will do. Thanks for your help.

I can't get ANYthing to install via clockwork, everything says can't open <insert file name>.zip, (bad), installation aborted. Uninstalled ROM Manager and reinstalled, etc... can't get anything to install. I apologize if this is a dumb question or if I'm overlooking something but any help would be appreciated, thanks.

How are you getting into clockwork? Try rom manager of you're not. Also try downloading the roms again

It is ROM Manager, as stated in the OP, and it's not ROMs I'm trying to install, it's various .zips like the new Swype, original i900 Boot Animations, etc...
Oh I see, what rom are you currently running?
As for the swype, try and use a file manager to open the .zip and manually install it.

Stock ROM, rooted and lag fixed. The swype isn't an APK.

In rom manager, did you click "flash clockworkmod recovery"? If not thats what you need to do, select the vibrant option and your phone will reboot into clockwork. Search the forums here there is a good walk through of clockwork installation and usage

It sounds like you're trying to flash from the stock recovery, not Clockwork. Make sure you click "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" in ROM Manager and possibly "Reinstall Packages" if it still takes you to the stock recovery.
It was definitely from clockwork, but I got it. Apparently by coincidence, all four separate files I had tried to install had been corrupted somehow. Re-downloaded through Skyfire, re-flashed and all is well.

Thanks for the help anyway guys. Even if it did imply I was clueless

Was not intending to make you sound clueless friend, have seen others miss that step, and you didn't list it so thought it might help. At any rate, glad you got it resolved.

I try from rom manager and the side button, takes me to stock recovery. I hit reinstall packages and still doesn't get me in. It says e: can't mount and sd can't find update.zip? This is first time this has ever happened.

go to rom manager and flash clockwork recovery..
once it tells you "successfully flashed CWM" go to Files and check if there's an update.zip if it's there you are good to go..
then go to recovery.. re-install package ( may have to re-install twice until you see green text) flash away!!
****, I went to reinstall packages and it installed update.zip even though my phone was already rooted now my super user is a ninja looking thing instead of skull and when I try to use anything requiring root it says force close super user not responding

I kept getting the message "an error occurred while downloading....." i think and hope its a server issue. What i did was i copied the clockwork update.zip from my brother's vibrant and clicked reinstall packages in the stock recovery. was able to flash bionix v no problem.
I an having the same problem. Very frustrating. I am taking a break and calling it a development/server issue that will be fixed when I come back and try again.

Ok so when I had stock 1.83 I used the native recovery app to flash the leaked ota of gingerbread. And ever since when I try to go back to it, it'll just sit with the ! And little android dude. I tap around the screen and nothing. I installed rom manager and tapped flash cwm recovery and went to reboot in cwm recovery and same thing. Any ideas?

You should flash Tenfar's new CWM as the old one isn't compatible with 2.3.4. The one in the Rom Manager is incomplete and not recommended for us yet.
You have the link or version number?

do i have to always use a cmd prompt on windows to load into CWM? cause when i reboot and do volume down key and pwr and do the android recovery i get the basic recovery not cwm. and if i use the rom manager it does the same.
Like the title says how? I have tried flashing to the partition from terminal emulator, tried using old rom manager and replacing the file before flashing.....anybody figure out a way to do it without fastboot?
