simple Fix for light leakage - HTC EVO 3D

Caulk it!
Being in construction field for over 25 years Ive learned caulk fixes everything.
Ok before taking on this project make sure your device has real leak.
You can do this by placing piece of black electrical tape over captive buttons.
If you still see light seeping out sides you have leak.
Now to the fix:
A couple Items needed.
1:Black Caulk- I recommend DAP premium indoor/outdoor sealant , It can be found at Lowe's hardware for 3.89.
Its crackproof ,water tight , Permanently flexible and most importunity easy cleanup thus no worries of beating up your screen
2:small sponge
3:Water
4aper towels
The key to success is taking your time , Don't get the stuff all over the place work clean
Arep around light leakage area making sure all grime is removed.
I did this using damp fiber cloth.
B:Take some caulk out of tube place in paper plate so it easy to work with.
C:Apply small dabs of caulk at light leaked area pressing it in firmly with finger nail.
D: Damp Sponge away excess cleaning up area.
You many have to apply areas a couple time in order to get good seal to block light but hey its well worth it.
After leaks are sealed clean screen damp cloth.... make sure no leftovers are on screen/device & let sit for a couple hours until caulk dries.
Mine had leakage on entire bottom and a slight 1/4" up both sides.
LIGHT LEAKAGE IS NO MORE

Hmmm.... a ballsy Mod that I might actually do. the light leakage doesn't really bother me too much, but I'm use to my EVO 4G's light leakage issue, lol
good going though!. can we have a pic in total darkness and one with a lot of light to see how it works, and how it looks on the phone itself?

This actually works, it has been done on za original EVO.

LOOKS LIKE I HAVE IT AFTERALL. Oh well, not too bad and I use Screen Filter app from Market for viewing at night.

I just looked at mine in the dark and have determined that the light leakage on bottom and sides is just a reflection from capacitive buttons and not leakage.

No prob. I'm gonna see if tape over the buttons kills the "leak" make sure it's a reflection or actual leakage.

That's how mine looked....a tad worse on the bottom though

Or if you put it in a case, you will never see the light leakage.

wow really?. I never thought that covering it witha case would block the light from emitting from the case as WELL!
Obviously not everyone wants a case on their phone, I know I've never liked cases to add extra bulk to the phone. as much as I do is a screen protector

I have leakage on mine, and I am super picky with phones. For some reason this light leakage doesn't feel the same like other light leakages. I mean the LED is so strong on the buttons it actually feels like it shines on the sides and the bottom. I cant even see it during the day, only in a dark room. So I am actually not bothered by it. I had the thunderbolt for a week or two and at the bottom it had two white dots sticking out, now that bothered me.

Or you could simply turn the light from ur buttons off by using screen filter from the market. Plus it will same battery which has already Berenice amazing.

Interestingly enough, I looked into that. The "rear flash pack" the guy is talking about doesnt exist. The static image at the beginning of the phone with the back off is PHOTOSHOPPED to show an LCD on there. Yay, he touched an app on the screen that "turned on the lcd"! I could disassemble an lcd flashlight and tape the contact point, battery and lcd to the back of my phone and duplicate this video. I could even put an icon on my desktop to press too, just to make it look nifty! Notice how nowhere in the video does he show the back of the phone ON video in good light.
Oh, and very interesting that people have been asking the guy for the link for his "rear flash pack" for almost a year and hes given 0 responses.
Theres no proof of concept there. You know how ridiculous a mod like that would be? Not only would you have to have the knowledge of the circuitboards to solder the lcd leads on, but you would also have to know android well enough to know how to activate those specific contact points. Hell, we cant even figure out how to crack the rogers coding yet, what makes you think that someone out there figured all this out?
EDIT: Heres proof:
This is the "picture" from said video.
Increase the image to biggest size and notice the following:
-The LCD holes arent round.
-The LCD holes are PIXELATED
-The LCD holes are drilled right through a flimsy metal clip under the battery door. Look at it on YOUR phone and tell me how thats possible without the clip breaking into pieces and falling off.
-the rim of the LCD holes has obviously had the burn tool in photoshop applied to it (notice how its darker around the edges than any other part of the phone.
Oh, and the coup de grace: THE PICTURE IS AN UNBOXING PHOTO FROM THE PHONE'S RELEASE LAST SEPTEMBER. You can see the G1 box and all of the box contents on the floor right under the phone!
Well.. that brings us back to square one, ill bust out my nikon as soon as I get my phone up and running again, ran into some minor (i mean major) technical difficulties.

Red HTC logo mod on rezound battery door

I didnt like the black on black look of the door with the logo on the same backround color, so i took the letters out and painted them maroon red with spray paint and put them back. They are held together original with double tape, but if your going to do it, take it off very careful with a razr, they break easy.. (i broke the h and T but doesnt really show lol)

I would do this but I keep a case on my phone at all times, so no point in the end. But does look much better though!
i may end up doing it one day i like the look of it
That does look pretty good. They should have made it that way to begin with.
Not pink like the 4 buttons at the bottom?
Also, it'd be more work then it's worth, but rather then removing the HTC letters you could also carefully place masking tape all around them & leave them on while you spray paint.
Oh wait.. The whole battery backing... Spray paint the entire thing like shiny silver or something.... Or the entire phone shiny silver(minus the screen/buttons ofcourse.

All I've seen you do is just bash the phone again and again LOL. Just drop the damn thing and get the Prime or RAZR .
You guys thought i was bashing it from the spray painting comment?... heh... Actually, i think it would be cool to customize it in such a way(or any phone for that matter). If i was confident in my spray painting abilities id give it a go.
p.s. the pink buttons are cool to (i did used to have a Toyota Supra that was heavily "riced out" w/ a custom 2 tone candy pink paint job & rims painted green... the pink buttons on the phone made me laugh & remember the car).
i would paint the phone but its never like factory, they use special adhesion stuff and ya ive painted phones before but never comes out perfect specially rubber ones dont stick they come off easy. But yea the logos come off easy too so not to hard to just take off and paint

i'm thinking it would be cool to paint around the edges of the phone itself, just cover the screen with something....
as for the back cover, since it is rubber... the antenna parts... i wonder if it'd be possible to just temporarily remove them & then dunk the back cover into some sort of 'flexible' paint meant for rubber materials & coat it in primer to.
i think i'm going to test on one of my old Thunderbolt cases

Reading in the Dark

Can someone give me an idea of the feasibility of creating a glow in the dark screen protector? It would have to be somewhat transparent ( doesn't have to be comepletely transparent) and unnoticable during the day but still glow in the dark.
If that isn't possible, could I buy a screen protector and paint it with transparent glow in the dark paint to get similar effects?
And then if none of those are possible, could someone tell me where o could find glow in the dark tissue paper or wax paper. (Yes, I'm going to try it)
Any other ideas? I kind of want to stay away from clip on flashlights. Something about them bothers me....oh and don't say built in flashlight case either because those bother me too.

Wouldn't this defeat the purpose of reading on an eInk device? Even worse, not only will it shine in your eyes as long as you're reading, it will also bring the contrast way down.
When i want to read in the dark i use my $.99 book light i got off ebay.. I would suggest looking into one. much easier.

Flex Lighting's LED film looks promising, but I can not find it on sale anywhere. (sorry I can not post links yet, so please google )
That looks like something they designed to be built into the reader and not added on. There are no visible wire or anything. The description said that its a film applied to the screen that is powered by a single led. Looks like they turned it on with a switch on the bottom of the reader. Very cool concept but i think its going to be something used on new models..as a built in function.
If you go to their website it shows an exploded view of a kindle with the film under the the bezel.. they have a very broad list of possible applications. and then ask you to connect them with your specific application. I would assume so they could quote you on a custom order base. So to me it looks as if they as gearing themselves to manufactures and not consumer addons.
Now is possible that you could get quotes from them for an order of 1 but then you would have to place it in the nook tap into the power of the nook and install an on/off switch.
saw flex light articles earlier which partially inspired the glow in the dark screen protector idea.
To me, it seemed like a built into the device kind of thing, like persichini is saying. But then again, I don't see why it would be so difficult for them to create an external film for people with old e-readers. Of course it could be too costly to design a individual screens for all the popular e-readers...
Hopefully Amazon and B&N don't take forever to implement flex light into their designs.

Chip05, I just realized that it might be a great idea. It seems that there are some "glow in the dark" paint/tape/spray on Amazon. We should try it! Haha, if it works then the Flex light film idea will be dead! Maybe it can be patented!

I've been thinking about adding a Joule Thief to my nook cover, but I haven't had a chance to pick up the parts. I don't like the clip-on lights as they don't work too well and are bulky, but I think I could add a joule thief in relatively easily.

But its on 3 AAAs. Maybe smaller it would be better for NST.
1. Screen protector + glowing spray = fail.
Why? Learn physics.
1. How long do You think it will glow? Most of fluorescent materials shine for several minutes to an hour after being "charged" by exposing to very bright light.
2. How bright do You think it would be? The glow is very dim, so You just can see it, but You wont be able to illuminate anything with it.
3. Transparency. The thing was discussed here. To the low light conditions You are adding the lowered transparency of protective screen.
4. The glowing film as the light source is situated between the screen and your eyes. It actually obscures the vision of the text.
Maybe there are paints that have the above problems resolved but they will cost.
You are free to experiment. But IMHO You are going to get either useless thing or something as expensive as You reader itself.

Back cover flex - sounds cheap

Really like the N10 but this makes build quality seem a little shoddy.
It's annoying to hear the click every time its re-positioned in my hands.

I'd like more people chime in and let me know if it's worth the RMA or something really common with a lot of them.
If i was you I would call google mine doesn't do that either, very solid build here
Mines fine here too
This wouldn't bother me anyway tbh. I'm concerned about bad backlight bleed.
Same here, no flex.
You press on your car hood and it's going to dimple and make noise too. Are you going to RMA it too?

it's irritating simply because its noticeable every time you switch hands or re-position the N10 in your hands--something you do often while holding a 10" slab of glass that weighs over a pound for an extended period of time.
If the hood on my car made a sound every time i turned i would probably RMA it too.
I'll be honest though, i am torn on a RMA because i think a lot of people return too many items driving up the cost for everyone. I'd never return something because the screen looks uneven with a pure black image in a completely dark room because it's something i'd never notice in regular use.
If it was just flex i wouldn't give a crap but the sound however is hard to ignore when reading or browsing the web in a quiet environment.

Is not uneven, it's areas of the screen that are much brighter than others on a black screen.
You would notice it in normal usage if your planning on watching dark videos on it.
I agree, slight bleed is ok because you won't notice it at a lower brightness level in the dark.
However bad backlight bleed where a reasonably big portion of the screen is alot brighter than the rest would be very distracting whilst watching a dark film.
I have a bit a flex (well, its not flex, more like its hollow underneath) right around the 'S' area of the Nexus. But i dont care.

If I really push I get a slight click. As I don't push on the back of my device with force too often I'm not seeing it as a problem.
I was more concerned about dead pixels. I have none, I do have some light bleed though but since its only noticeable in the dark when I have brightness up maybe 25% its not a problem as it is only noticeable at 100% brightness

I noticed today I have this flex in the back too. I also have some bleed in both bottom corners and a small amount at the top. None of this is really bad enough to bother me that much. I was just wondering if there could be any correlation between this flex and light bleed. Anyone that doesn't have the flex, do you have light bleed?
Mine just came in about an hour ago. The little bit of light bleed I can live with, but the back cover looks like somebody stepped on it in the middle, there is significant bowing, and associated creaking and popping.
Already processed an RMA with Google, replacement should be on the way.
But other than that, this thing rocks so far.

it's irritating simply because its noticeable every time you switch hands or re-position the N10 in your hands--something you do often while holding a 10" slab of glass that weighs over a pound for an extended period of time.

Bro, do the RMA. That's not normal, on mine there's a slight give when firm pressure is applied. It feels natural though, like that's what's supposed to happen when that much pressure is applied. You definitely can't feel any play or hear any clicking noises while handling it. I get that your trying to be considerate and everything but there's a limit, you paid good money for the device, don't sell yourself short.
If you can take the back off, maybe you can take a hairdryer to it and gently melt it flat. Can't say I know anyone who's tried this though, just a random thought

Protective Film... Did you get it ALL?

Okay, I've had my phone for 4 days now, and thought I had all of the protective films off of it. I found my wife had missed the ones on the edge 2 days ago, so she got all of those.
But did you notice there's one on the power/volume buttons?
Yeah, me neither. It is now OFF.
So, we have...
1. Screen protective film
2. 4 thin films going around the edge of the phone (if your phone edges feel rough, this is why)
3. Film that looks like a Tie Fighter covering the power button and volume buttons.
Some may know of these, but I bet you I'm not the only one that missed them...

Neither really, I was just kind of entertained to find another one settings somewhere. I know at least one other person just found it on theirs. Lol

Ok, I missed it too. Thought I got them all the first night. Love the little TIE fighter.
Edit: Taking the little sticker off, I have now learned that if you hold the down volume button while the phone is off will bring up your camera.

yes I had all and how did you get this one off!?!?! I cant get off to save my life!!!
Ancient Chinese secret...
Actually, old Army Secret. Always keep a fingernail handy. Used it like a scoop and scraped the edge till it pulled up a bit. Slid my nail under it and peeled it off. I LIKE the texture of those buttons.
I still cant get. I will just leave mine on until it falls off haha

Turn your phone sideways (landscape), then scrape down the middle (powerbutton) with your fingernail.
I got all films.
Anybody know how I can remove the audio and charging port letters to keep the stock film? I tried nail polish but it didn't remove them.

Ha, yeah i noticed the next day when i took it out of my case.. like what the heck is that on the side.. oh.. its on everything.. and whats that on the volume... heh.. good stuff, wonder how many people will find it because of your post
Two days ago I started to feel something was wrong with the volume up button. I was like oh no the build quality is horrible. Then I realized it's a film that started peeling off!
I'm guilty also. Didn't realize till I saw the post. ?

No worries, we aren't stupid, just differently smart.
Missed that volume one. Thanks!
Not a problem. May the Force be with you.
Anyone else?
I just noticed the ones on the side when I took the case off. I like the Tie Fighter looking one but now I see why I can't find the volume buttons fast.
Get them all? The only one I took off, was the one on the screen. I want to keep this baby in as good shape as possible, so it's worth more when it comes time to sell it.
