Sup guys. I just wanna know if this is a problem or wat.
Ok here I have 2 3d, and 1 of them the colors on the screen are different from the other, for example. The white in one is really white and in the other is kind of cream, and white but not as white like the other
More info?
Do they both have screen protectors
If so are they the same brand?
Are you looking at the phone from the same angle?
Try closing one eye and looking at both
your eyes might be playing tricks on you

There is a theory (don't think anyone's confirmed it yet) that there are two different types of screens being used for the Evo 3d's...similar to how it was with the Evo 4g, which had some Novatek LCD screens, and some had Epson LCD screens. There was a clear difference in the colors of the two screens. I suspect that the same thing is going on here. Mine has the 'creamy white' style white, while the display model in the Sprint store has a FAR brighter white. It has nothing to do with the brightness of the screen or screen protectors IMO, and there is a clear difference between the two. I suspect in the future we will learn that there are in fact more than one type of SLCD screen being used, for whatever reason (in the case of the OG Evo 4g, it was a shortage of a supply on one brand, so HTC started using a different manufacturer of the screens, resulting in the difference in colors)
I just returned one of these yellowish tinted phones. Some say it's a SLCD effect but I find that hard to believe when I'm looking @ my new one with great whites and vivid colors that pop. I have a a feeling HTC is using 2 different panel makers just like they did with the OG EvO. Nova panels had better whites and cooler colors and Epson panels had a warmer color temp. And they also looked washed out to me.
Maybe those running temp root can run terminal to find out what kind of screens they have. I would bet anything it's 2 different manufacturers.

Same thing with the Sensation. There are two manufacturers of the screen, one being Sharp the other being AUO. You can check which panel you have by going into terminal emulator and typing in "dmesg". The scroll down and find panel type.
On my device:
Panel Type = Panel_ID_SHR_SHARP_NT

Thank you sir, I forgot the command to check that. I had checked it on my Evo 4g one time long ago. I have the same type as you do. Panel Type = Panel_ID_SHR_SHARP_NT
What other ones are floating around out there? Start checking, I'm curious to know. With the OG Evo the Nova panels only supported 2 or 3 point multi touch (don't recall) where the Epson panels supported 4 or 5 point multi touch (don't remember) I wonder if anything similar exists here, if it is confirmed that there are more than one type of screen out there, which I definitely believe there are.
I'm glad this thread is here finally. I noticed this too. When I got my phone, the screen seemed to have a yellowish/cream tint which was especially noticable with white backgrounds. I then compared it to several other 3d phones at best buy and a sprint store, all set at max brightness and all at the same wrbsite(google.com). There is definitely 2 set of screens. One has a much whiter background capability. I think I am going to exchange mine. Seeing both my screen and the other screen type side by side, it was pretty clear the other screen had a truer color representation.

Pretty sure on the Evo 3D HTC is only using one panel supplier, because Sharp is the only one producing the parallax barrier screens in any large quantities. The 3DS uses the same Sharp-manufactured screen in a different size, and I'd stake a bet that the Optimus 3D is using a Sharp panel as well.

Sharp here also, my whites seem pretty white, no complaints here.

Interesting. Did it list the same numbers as the other ones listed? If they are all the exact same screen and the numbers match up, then maybe there is a problem with some of them. Mine is definitely the creamy white, and I've seen others with the bright white, and the difference is very noticeable. I would've bet that it was two different screens...or at least different part numbers. I don't see how the same screen could have such a vast difference in color.
I'm gonna go down to my local Sprint store and check this out myself. I've had 2 of them and haven't noticed any difference yet. Makes me feel like I'm missing something. I'd hate to want to exchange my Evo3d when I like it so much as it is now. (which means I probably wont anyway)
there are 2 different screens..
1st one i owned looked great.. bright whites..
screen panel novatec/sharp ...
2nd one is only a sharp... it appears the SHARP only screens do not have the bright whites.
3rd one also sharp..

Qhd is not a screen technology, its a resolution.
And the problem with the colors isn't that they're dull or unsaturated compared to a super amoled., that's to be expexted. The problem is that the colors are just wrong compared to just about any screen you want to compare it too, load up some websites on the phone and a well calibrated desktop monitor and you'll easily see the difference.
Compared to my captivate im really happy. That thing made skin tones green or orange.
It has to be reiterated. The oled display technology OVERsaturates the colors. As in, the colors are overly vibrant. The atrix will more accurately display colors.
Ok, saying this again. We (at least I) am not saying this in comparison to a samoled screen, the colors on a regular LCD will obviously never look like that, the colors on the amoled are completely wrong. However that doesn't mean the atrix has them right, just look at the screen compared to a well calibrated computer monitor.

Bumping this to get some attention on this issue.
I'm considering returning my Atrix because of how bad yellows and blues look, compared to OTHER LCDs, not compared to Super AMOLED screens.
I lined up my Captivate, Atrix, iPod Touch 4, and my wife's HTC Evo Shift and fired up Words with Friends on all of them. While it's clear that the Captivate is oversaturated, if you take that out of the equation, the Atrix's colors just look bad compared to the other two LCDs. The yellow tiles look "dirty" like they have a brown or greenish tint to them. The light blues in the tabs on the home screen of Words with Friends look like they have a greenish tint as well.
I've seen a lot of people say that they think it's one of the greatest displays ever, up there on par with the iPhone 4. If that's true, I really hope mine and other people seeing this just have defective models that can be exchanged.
I'm going into my AT&T store sometime tonight or tomorrow in hopes of putting two or more Atrices side by side to compare.
If anyone else seeing this problem could do the same, it would be very helpful. Especially as it seems likely that a random one pulled out in store could have the same defect.
Scott, I have my atrix boxed up ready to go back for the same issues. I went to the at&t store and looked at their 3 demo units, all of them looked the same.
If you go to a verizon store and play with a motorola droid x you'll see that its screen looks the same as well, it's just whatever panel maker motorola is using. People that are saying "It's the greatest screen evar, just as good as the iphone 4" are suffering new gadget love and can't see the flaws. It's not the worst screen ever but it is a definite step down from other manufacturers screens.

I would have to agree, the iphone4 has a pretty good display. It is a bit oversaturated, but does look pleasing to the eye. The iphone is also much smoother when using the pinch to zoom feature. With the Atrix having a dual core processor, I thought it would at least be on par with the iphone, but for some reason it's definitely not as smooth.
Oh well... just my 2 cents.
So I went in to an AT&T store last night and compared my Atrix with their demo unit.
The colors seem a little bit better, but interestingly, the demo unit's display didn't seem as bright as my Atrix, and it may have had slightly higher contrast.
I got one of the associates to look at it and agree that mine had a slight color cast to it. They said they would do a replacement for me if I came back with my paperwork from my online order, so I said I would do that today or Saturday.
I went straight home and compared my Atrix again to my wife's HTC Evo Shift. In doing that, I still felt like the color on her screen was significantly better than on mine, and in seemed better than I remembered the store's demo unit, as well.
So, I think I need to get my phone and her phone both in there, side by side with the demo unit, and see if I could live with the screen if it was exactly the same as the demo unit. I think probably yes, given the other major advantages of this phone (qHD resolution, Tegra 2, 1GB RAM), but as a graphic designer, bad colors are hard for me to take. And colors that are off in the way the Atrix's screen is off are a graver sin to me than oversaturating a la Super AMOLED.
Bottom line, I'm still on the fence. Has anyone else done any other tests?

Wait, so now the iPhone's IPS LCD is oversaturated too? Let's face it: Atrix is weak on colors -thanks to the RGBW PenTile display, where they tried to prolong its life by replacing some Blue tiles with White tiles -which makes colors pale.
It does look great with flesh tones though. Ill give it that.
People who complain about wrong colors have been looking at way oversaturated screens... as a semi advanced photographer, I can agree that the atrix screen is very very good color wise ...

Or they got an Atrix with a defective display, like me. Ony my Atrix, there's no getting around the fact that yellows look dirty and brown, and that certain shades of blue look greenish.
Hello, I just got a Thunderbolt through my work and I noticed the screen tends to wash out at angles. I had this same problem with my T-Mobile HTC Glacier or MT4G. It turned out to be 2 different vendors Sharp and Sony displays being used in this model. Once I got the good display it was a noticeable difference in the quality of the better display vs the bad one. Direct viewing from straight on is ok just as it was on the HTC Glacier. So I just wonder if anyone might have a good one and could post some pics to show.
Here is my original thread for the HTC Glacier with the Screen issues. There are some pictures and videos to compare the differences. I'm seeing some washing out at angles, especially around the clock digits where this problem is easily seen.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=863679
Here are some pictures of mine with the Sharp screen. The noticeable areas are the clock widget black areas where they flip.
I'd say it's possible. I'm sure they have more than one place that manufactures the devices. There's been some variability in the build quality of the devices, so it's not too far fetched.
I don't have a camera other than my phone to take pictures, though. It looks like a really good display to me and doesn't "wash out"
You're right there are two displays. I went to the store last week to compare my phone with the display. Because I used to have the mytouch 4g and it took three tries to get one with a nice display. So I was surprise, when I saw the display model and colors were not as vibrant as mine. Man did I get Lucky, first try and it's a winner.
This is interesting. I ran a "dmesg |grep panel" and it returned sharp. I wonder if anyone would get Sony.
Mine is noticeably worse than my MT4G that had the good screen.

If you ask me, there is no doubt that there are two panels for this device. My first TBolt (which had several problems) had a really bad screen and I complained about it in another thread like this one. I had it exchanged and the new one is VERY much better. The first one was not crisp, colors were bad, looked blown out next to my DInc OLED. The replacement is crisp and the colors are beautiful.
I didn't get a chance to compare side-by-side, but everyone who had seen my first one, even my wife who is pretty oblivious about these things, would say that the new one is dramatically better.

Thanks, could some of you with good screens do a dmesg in terminal and report if you have a sharp or Sony panel. Make sure you restart then immediately run the terminal and dmesg command. Mine is a sharp so I'm thinking it is the bad display. Also if you can post some pictures of the screen from the side at extreme angles.
I will try to take some pictures of mine and post them tomorrow.
Before some of you start stating your opinions about looking at the screen at angles, yes there are situations where you are viewing at angles. Also it has been proven at least in the MT4G with the bad sharp display that the colors are not as vivid as with the sony screen even when looking straight on.
Mine is made in Taiwan. If you have a good one post where it was made please.

Reading this board may not be enough to tell. I will be interested to see if anyone has a Sony screen to compare.
The point is, everything I do on this phone can be done at that angle, in relation to using the screen. Colors do not change, only the brightness, as to be expected from a gloss screen (and gloss screen protector).
I personally think that shows a quality screen.
Definitely not something to worry about.
FYI : I have my dpi set to 200 if that matters
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA Premium App
Here are some more pictures which stand out more with green colors. You can really tell the difference as you tilt to angles and the deep green contrast is lost and it is hard to define the icons. The middle picture is taken from straight on and you can see the difference. I think on the Good Sony displays there will be no difference when looking from angles. I really suspect that the same display problems are following from HTC and the MT4G.

No I doubt it, we could never tell with the MT4G. The only one thing that seemed to hold true in the beginning was the ones made in China had a higher percentage of the good screens and more of the ones made in Taiwan had the more of the bad ones.
i have a sharp panel as well. i'm no connoisseur apparently because i think my screen looks just as good as my old incredible.
I have one made in taiwan and it is essentially flawless, only thing wrong with it is 2 very tiny dots of light leak which can only be seen in pitch black

Odd, mine is made in Taiwan, are all bolts produced there now?
dmesg says sharp panel, but I have no complaints about viewing angle or contrast after quite a bit of fiddling with it and trying to find something to whine about.
I have a sharp panel and it's better than the display model at my local store. I used to own a mytouch 4g, it took three tries to get a good display. And the good display was made in china. My TB is made in Taiwan.
This would explain why some claim to have gorilla glass style display that can't be scratched and others are getting scratches from car keys.
My first phone the digitizer went out after a drop out of the car (no glass broken or cosmetic issues just said touch panel- fail) and the second phone has light leakage not just at the bottom but at the corners too. There is a gap at the right corner for whatever to get into my phone.
I want to know if there is a different 'nicer' panel. It seems quite a few people are popping up with broken digitizers...
The phone I have is a Sharp lq043y1dx04
How do I know? Because I busted mine open to try and fix my broken digitizer. You can see pics and read the story in my post "Anyone want to see the inside of a thunderbolt?"
Still no replacements out there :-(
Digitizer or LCD
I have not taken this phone apart. But I did replace the digitizer on the HTC INC. The Digitizer is separate from the LCD in that phone. Does anyone know if the Digitizer is separate in the Thunderbolt? If so, it does not matter who the manufacturer of the LCD is.
I to agree with this thread that the digitizer on the Thunderrbolt is very easily scratched especially compared to the HTC INC.
I just recently switched from an Evo 4G to a new Evo 3D. After about an hour of having it I noticed something was off with the screen. It had a yellowish tint to it (I've had an Evo 4G and a Nexus S 4G do this out of the box also). Now I did return the phone to get one that had a correctly functioning screen, but my question is this: Has anyone else experienced this with the Evo 3D? I did notice that the serial number on the 3Ds with the yellowed screens were HT17 models and the one I ended up with that had a good screen was an HT16.
P.S. I just want other users thoughts on this. I don't want people telling me to just exchange the phone. Has anyone else with the HT17 models experienced this? There were three Evo 3Ds that I have seen do this.
I have an HT17 serial number and my screen is not yellowish tint at all. Very happy with the whites.
My best guess is that this Sprint store received a bad batch. Or I just have bad luck considering I have run across 5 yellowed screens across 3 different products.
I have a ht16 now and i got the yellowish screen. I had 2 before that was bright whites but I dont remember what they were. I dont know if i really wanna exchange again since everything else is good and dont want to end something worse
Sent from my GT-P7510 using Tapatalk
my original 3D was a HT16 I got through the premier order deal and had a slight tilt to the screen so I got telesales to send me another. The new one is an HT17. Now on to the differences I've noticed so far.
HT16(original)
Screen-> darker/slight yellow whites(or more realistic) when compared to the new one.
dmesg showed the following:
"panel: mipi_cmd_novatek_qhd"
"<6>[ 1.797454] mipi_novatek_panel_type_detect: panel_type=PANEL_ID_SHR_SHARP_NT"
HT17(newer just received yesterday)
brighter whites somewhat fake at times i guess you could view it.
power button was very mushy and much tougher to work compared to the HT16 which was very firm and clicky.
dmesg showed:
"<6>[ 1608.757825] Panel Type = PANEL_ID_SHR_SHARP_NT"
Now on to the odd thing. I took pictures with both phones in the exact same location and settings and you can tell when viewing on the phone the one has lil brighter(maybe faker) whites. I thought possibly that it could be just because of the screen and the photo taken would look the same on a PC but they dont. you still see the diff in whites on home PC. Also somehow the photos size were different with the HT17(brighter whites) coming in at 611KB, and the older HT16 file was 776KB.
Now whats even funnier is that when you select the photo in the gallery and view details the HT17(brighter whites) lists it at 478KB and the HT16(original) lists its size at 613KB. This is different fromt he size thats listed when you email it, and even whats listed next to it when you attach it in an email.
anyone explain what I posted up at all?
I'm gonna try mine with the same picture test. How do you find the HT#? I'm sure it's so stupid obvious I'm just overlooking it.....

its on the box your phone came in and also should be under the battery.
As for your issue with the picture file size, that just sounds odd. Were both phones the same software version?
the yellowing could possibly be glue that hasnt dried all the way yet. it happens if they are moving units real fast. if this is the problem it should dry out in a few days and your whites will be white again. could be a defect too. if anyone else has this problem try giving it a few days and see if it goes away.

I've had 3 Evos...2 with the yellowish tint, and one without. I honestly don't think most people notice since it seems other colors are fine and sharpness is still good. It's only apparent usually when you go to a app or webpage with an allwhite background and even more apparent when you compare it to another phone with a nonyellow tint(which I did).
i just got a replacement yesterday and the screen has a yellow tint. i dont know if i should keep it or return it.
I'm using a HT17 and the screen is very yellow. If I max out the brightness it gets washed out and the blacks goes almost grey. Next to my Desire Z the screen doesn't even come close to representing the correct colors. I notice this especially in the search page and a blank internet page.
My Sensations had totally different screen as well. The first was nice and white and the second was yellowish... I'm so frustrated...
I noticed that side by side, the evo has cooler colors (blue tint) and I've noticed that the 3d has warmer colors (red tint). May just be the nature of the screen

I purchased the Photon on release day and have had no problems with it (shutoffs, reboots, screen of death, etc.). I came from an Iphone 4 on AT&T because I wanted unlimited data. My only gripe is what appears to be touchscreen sensitivity/preciseness.
When I look at my Photon with the screen turned off in the sunlight at an angle, I can see a grid of boxes that appears to be the touchsensing grid. When I look at an Iphone the same way, I can see a similar type of grid.
The difference in the grids is substantial, the Photon grid boxes are significantly larger than those on the Iphone.
I've noticed that in general, the Photon has worse touch sensitivity than the Iphone 4 did. Making exact screen presses on website links, for example, is simply not as fluid or precise. Not even the unlock keypad works as well.
I haven't had an opportunity to look at the Epic Touch (GS2), I'm wondering what the grid is like on this phone?
Anybody else here notice a lack of preciseness with the Photon touchscreen? Is it an Android issue or a hardware issue?
The grids are becuase the screen has an arrangement of pixels and subpixels called PenTile Matrix, which makes it appear as if it had more resolution than it actually does.
That does not affect, however, the touchscreen quality. The SGS2 does not have the square thingy.
You have too much time on your hands.

No, I am familiar with the pentile nature of the screen.
l am referring directly to the capacitive matrix grid above the lcd used to sense finger presses. The grid squares are very large in comparison to the iPhone. That makes me wonder if the touchscreen is less accurate. Look at both phones with the screen at an angle in direct sunlight. Each has a grid.
I would definitely agree its not at fluid as other phones I've used but damn can it be touchy. Scrolling down a webpage always seems to end up in a unintended click for me.
Yeah mine can be touchy as well. Mostly with the xda app

My brothers has cool whites and I have warm whites...yet our panels are both Sony...so I don't get it.
mine is also a warm-toned screen, nonetheless it looks great
I posted about this yesterday but it already got buried. Unfortunately you can either hassle with taking it back and hoping for a more blueish white panel or you can get used to it. I hated the look when i unboxed, I have the same yellowish tint on white. But im already used to it for the most part. There is an app on the play store called "Screen adjuster" that you can add some blue back in but its not perfect and it has to run in the background i haven't tested to see how much of a load it puts on the phone if left on all day. Also a good app to use to visually inspect the colors your panel is showing is "dead pixel test". So software can be used to help the tint, but as far as a permanent solution, I believe that would be up to HTC. Maybe some devs can do it eventually once we have s-off.
I've just starting to really notice this, and its driving me nuts.
The whites are not white at all, they are more yellowish eggshell (or as I like to call it 'light puke'). You can really notice it when your in natural light. I held it up to something pure white and you can see an epic difference.
Does this not bother anybody else? I forget, but don't some ROMs (for other phones) have options to change screen tones? Is this something that I can look forward to ? Or perhaps my eyes (and mind) are just playing tricks on me.
I dislike 'warm' tones a lot. I wish I gotten a 'cool' tone phone instead, I can handle the blue tone a lot better.
I wonder why this is I mean it isnt like amoled n the screens should be.the.same.... Maybe dim lights inside?
Root it and try chainfire 3d, it has the option to change screen tone in I believe the pro version. Added bonus, works with all roms to my knowledge. I haven't tried it yet myself as I'm completely happy with the tone on mine, but I used it on the og evo for a long time.

Thanks, I'll give it a try since I'm already rooted. I messed around with 'screen adjuster' and 'filer your screen' and neither seemed to do the trick.
EDIT: Looks like I'll have to wait a bit longer to play with chainfire 3d. Requires S-off (or probably just unlock bootloader). Only have root. But chainfire looks promising.
This was a problem on the One X for AT&T but most of them cleared up after a week or so. My advice would be to keep the brightness up for a while when using it.

We have two EVO LTE and one of ours is much cooler and blue and the other is much warmer. How do you check if the display type to see if they are different?
My screen is warm also. At first I thought it was the ZAGG HD screen protector that was causing that yellowish tint, but after I removed it, it was still there.
If anyone with two EVO LTE phones can post a side-by-side picture of the warm and cool screens, I'd greatly appreciate it.
TIA
Here is a picture. Its not the best quality so it might be hard to tell a difference. The difference is much more apparent in real life.
Supposedly its due to the adhesive. There is a thread about it in the HOX forum. My screen seems to be whiter than it was a week ago but that may be a placebo effect- I need to do another side by side comparison with my iPhone to tell.

I was dreading a problem like this. I can deal with blacks not being black (have to deal with it with the very nature of LCD) but whites... Yeah, they need to be white.
Here's to hoping my device doesn't have this issue. I will update this post with news.
get an app called screen adjuster
then increase the blue a little bit, to about 15 or so
woooooorks wonderss!!!
On my NS4G, there was a kernel mod developed by SuperCurio that allowed you to adjust gamma levels. I always ran my phone with very cool blue whites.
Maybe something like that would be possible for the Evo?
I think I have the warmer screen color. Things like this doesn't bother me at all. I've seen thread like this everytime a new phone comes out. After a few week your eyes and OCD levels will adjust.

You can def tell the one on the right is the warm though. I'm sure in direct natural light the difference is huge.

I'm hoping this is the case. Its weird because I think it changes. Like after it goes in direct natural light it gets really bad.

Same. I can deal with the black but not the whites. Whites need to be crisp and clean not yellow. I repainted all the eggshell whites in my house to pure white. To me it takes away the crispness of the screen.

Man you hit the nail right on the nail. I had mine set at 14 for the past three days. It helps but it still isn't ideal. Plus its consuming resources.
dont think its an adhesive bonding process still "curing"
i think the color temp is permanent.
hopefully a dev will allow color temp change because its a little awkward staring at my pc monitor, then looking at the phone's brown and yellow drab lcd tint.

This is what I am praying for. But enough people have to be annoyed by it for somebody to do something.
The best test is to open the settings menu (Evo white) and compare it against a piece of notebook paper (real white). Its gross.
