[Q] What kernel to use to root? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Planning to use this method to root
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125414
BUT not sure what unsecure kernel I need.
I have done the *#1234# thing and it says:
PDA: 19100BUKE5
PHONE: 19100BUKE1
CSC: 19100VODKE2
Which one gives the right info? Phone, PDA or CSC?
Thanks.

No one has any idea?
How did y'all root your phones then?

Your phone is KE5 firmware .
jje

ok so I can flash any insecure kernel e.g. KE7 for example?
EDIT: also, if I use an unsecure KE7 kernel and then reflash a secure KE7 kernel, a. is this ok, and b. I will then have KE7 firmware I think?
Cheers.

To do it in tue good way :
It seems you have an operator firmware
First you must flash using Odin a samsung official firmware like (KE7 last KIES update for european people) to find the samsung offical firmware for your country, look in the official firmware and root thread of intratech.
Then You can flash the CF-Root kernel corresponding to your new firmware.
The yellow triangle is really nothing bad. Just meens you didn't use all offical samsung stuff ...
Edit : in Intratech thread, for choosing you firmware : find one with same csc as yours or a multi CSC firmware.
Or after flashing any firmware you want, re-flash with
ODIN, your CSC (present in Intratech thread)
in ODIN, use CSC BOX not PDA and don't touch anything else

Ok so I have the KF2 firmware for flashing.
It came with three files:
Phone_I9100XXKF2.tar
PDA_I9100XXKF2.tar
CSC_I9100XEUD1.tar.
I am on Vodafone UK. So I think I should replace the CSC .tar file with this one that I found:
CSC_I9100VODKE2.tar
This CSC .tar is the same one I have already: thus I should have no issues with connectivuty settings etc after flashing.
Is this correct?

That's correct.
Or you can just reflash after updating to kf2 your specific CSC using Odin and CSC box
CSC are specific from a region/country (keyboards langages ...) that's why you should use one specific to yours

Ok great stuff.
So: I use Odin to flash the firmware to KF2.
Then I can root it with the XXKF2 unsecure kernels etc.
Cool.

Nop, you should use Chainfire CF-Root kernel (kF2)
You will be directly rooted and will have CWM recovery mode.
His KF2 kernel is in his 3rd post i bolieve
But don't forget to download and flash your CSC with ODIN in the CSC box if you don't want to loose your specific country configuration.
You will find your CSC in the Intratech thread : official firmwares and how to root.
The how to ROOT from Intratech is older than the CF root from Chainfire.

[Q] Ripping kernel from phone

Hi,
I recently updated my KF2 (VAU) firmware to the KF4 (VAU) firmware.
I am going to root using CF-Root KF4 but want the original kernel. Is it possible to rip it from my phone? I don't have a tar to receive the zImage because I had to update through Kies and nobody on here has the KF4 update for Vodaphone Australia.
Thanks.

Why not use your nand backup and do advanced restore of boot.img? That is your kernel and should work.

[Q] Galaxy S II Firmware Upgrade 2.3.4 Help!

I have been researching the net on this and the posts in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278.
I haven't been able to post in there as I am a new user, but if someone can help me with this, it would be great.
I'm trying to upgrade my firmware to XXKH3 - Android 2.3.4.
My current version is:
PDA: I91000XWKE7
PHONE: I9100XXKE4
CSC: I9100OPSKE4
My Galaxy S II is rooted and it's on the OPTUS network in Australia.
My question is, how should I go about it?
Do I download the XXKH3 Stock Kernel: http://www.multiupload.com/C4DRUIJTLL and place that in PDA and PHONE in Odin?
And for CSC do I get this: Optus OPSKG1 CSC: http://www.multiupload.com/EPWZTIMS1F and place it in CSC?
I want to be able to use the OPTUS network on XXKH3, but without OPTUS bloatware. I'm just not sure which files to get so I can be with OPTUS on an Australian firmware if that makes any sense.
My last question is, would this then wipe my data? Or not?
I appreciate any help on this.

you are referring to the right thread. clear instructions are given on that thread.
choose the PDA option.
CSC has nothing to do with what languages the firmware supports and it will not add keyboard language support either.
You don't have to change the kernel or root or unroot to flash a new stock firmware.
You can then flash the kernel of your choice.
If you want the CF-root KH3 kernel. refer this thread
If you want to flash stock KH3 kernel you can also do that.
as far as operator bloatware is concerned search for operator specific bloatware removal scripts which can be executed using Gscript app . or a simpler option would be to freeze or uninstall the bloatware apps using Titanium back up Pro.
Thank you for the fast reply.
So pretty much all I need to do is put the XXKH3 Stock Kernel in the PDA option and that's it. So the OPTUS network will not be affected correct?
Then root it and I'm done?
Thanks again!

let me know how you get on,am severely tempted to flash new firmware just for a change!
Hm. I just put XXKH3 Stock Kernel in PDA and flashed it but my phone still says Android 2.3.3. I used the CF-root KH3 kernel as well to root it again.
What do I need to do to get it to Android 2.3.4? Do I have to place it in PHONE as well?
The ROM is 2.3.4, just about any ROM in original development is. What you are trying to flash is kernel. Best of luck.

Er, Kernel is kernel and firmware is firmware. Flashing the kernel won't update the firmware, just the kernel.
Alright I think I understand now.
Downloading the package, which should do it and I guess the stock kernel is used to root/rid yourself of the yellow triangle.

It went well, the phone is working great.
My data didn't get wiped.
Follow this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278.
Download the XXKH3 package.
I also used Titanium to backup my apps just in case and MyBackup Pro for contacts etc. but haven't needed to use it.
After you flash that (if you want to root the phone) go to this page http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399 and get CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_KH3-v4.1-CWM4.zip. Put that in PDA and flash it.
To get rid of the yellow triangle, follow this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14283369&postcount=2.
That's it. Thanks for all your help guys!
ok so lets say I chose new stock firmware to avoid the triangle, then later wanted to be official, could i plug my phone into kies and updatd to official 2.3.4 without problems?
i would like to try oranges firmware without rooting the device and voiding my warranty!

After flashing with KI3

Hi,
Recently i've updated my SGS2 to the latest via Kies having the below version
Check using *#1234#
PDA: DXKI2
PHONE: DXKI1
CSC: XXKH1
Gingerbread 2.3.3
After that i've downloaded the stock firmware of XXKI3 from Intratech cause i want to use 2.3.5. And flash it via odin. Now when i check my setting, its reflected as the same above.
However when i go to settings, the kernel version change to XXKI3. And still Gingerbread 2.3.3.
I need advise what i did wrongly.
Thanks in advance

It seems that you downloaded and flashed a file that contained only the kernel and not the entire firmware. Their are two download links, one for the full firmware package and one for the stock kernel.

I think I only flash the kernel. I'm now downloading the full firmware on XXKI3. So just to confirm that I should be flashing the full firmware of XXKI3 in order to get Gingerbread 2.3.5?
Thanks

Yes.full firmware is something 200+mb and kernel file is only 5+mb.
Be careful what version of ki3 you are going to flash
The original one has the new bootloader and you can not reset the counter with jig

[Q] Firmware Update Queries

Hi,
Bought a GS 2 a couple of days back and its running the following firmware
Baseband : I9100DDKE4
Kernel: 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKF3-CL276555
BUILD NUMBER - XWKF3
Have a few queries regarding flashing firmware
1) Can i flash the KJ1 firmware from Intratech's official firmware list?
XWKJ1
Android 2.3.5
This package has: PDA: XWKJ1| Modem/phone: XXKI3| CSC: XEUKH2
Download: http://www.multiupload.com/QYQLC8KGJ8
XWKJ1 Stock Kernel: http://www.multiupload.com/3W4XXTHFSZ
Password: [email protected]

2) The firmware mentioned above has only one file.
If the package only contains one .tar archive then it will have everything, pda+phone+csc, in the one file.

3) Since the above package only contains one file, updating to the above firmware would change the CSC. I'm from India. And hence i would lose the settings.
How should i proceed?
I am very much new to this. The above questions maybe / are silly, but would like to know how this works.
Many thanks in advance.
Yes using odin, you can always flash another csc after, I suggest you read the thread and understand the basics of flashing firmware, before you proceed, flash cf root using odin so you will be rooted and reboot into recovery or use cwm app that comes with cf root and do a backup, so if things go wrong you can go back into recovery and restore back.
You can find cf root in original dev section.

The firmware update contains a baseband for a different country. If I update using the above, would I lose my network/data connectivity?
Thanks,
Shray

So if i update to the package without flashing the original CSC back, would i still be able to access my mobile network and data?
In other words, does the CSC have any carrier settings? I own a unlocked the GS2
Any help on my query?
Yes will be able to access the internet.
I tried a firmware of different country and even after that my GPRS and general call and text were working fine.
Later i flashed Indian CSC.

The CSC contains some customizations, but responsible for your baseband/network and data connectivity is the Modem/Phone part.
As there are many other users of your region/country running on Intratech's ROM versions, this should work for you as well.
P.S.: I prefer Frankenstein versions, as you can combine them with any other Modem/Phone and/or CSC.
Just download the files you need/want to use, put them into the corresponding section in Odin and flash them at once to your phone.
Good luck !

If you used MobileODIN, try reflashing the same ROM, but having the .md5 in the external SD card, not in the internal storage.
I had this issue once and that's what worked for me.
Anyhow, forget about the Brazilian ROMs (such as ZTO). They are all outdated already.
Get one from NEE (new) or ITV (newest). They are better, newer, leaner and work flawlessly in Brazil (and yes, they both contain Brazilian Portuguese).
may I ask you to show me which one (ITV) should I use? Or just tell me what country I should look for in checkfus!
Thanks !!

Raphael, if you're going to use the non-GUI version of CheckFus Downloader, this is the command line to get it:
Code:
CheckFusDownloaderCmd.exe -dl I9300XXALF6/I9300ITVALF1/I9300XXLF5/I9300XXALF6 ITV GT-I9300
Otherwise, for the GUI version, just copy/paste the parts below in the "Firmware info" of CheckFus Downloader 2.1:
Product Code: GT-I9300MBDITV
PDA: I9300XXALF6
CSC: I9300ITVALF1
Phone: I9300XXLF5
then click on "Check Firmware" and then "Download".
it was not so easy to find it in checkfus...I didn't find in gui version, and on nongui I downloaded, but after the download the program crashes and broke the file. 3 times.
But I found it at Sammobile, downloaded and already flashed! Thank you again!
Mine's also says CSC Unknown... I'm on Official JB Polish rom... do I have to flash that CSC package?? But what is the one correspondent to the Official JB Polish??
I have the same thing after the Polish ROM. Does having an unknown CSC actually matter for any reason?
Threads seem to indicate that it doesn't, and my phone is working normally, but maybe I'm missing something obvious.
CSC may play a part if your network has fast dormancy .
CSC essentially contains a list of network setting for local areas .
Example
<Country>UK & IRE</Country><CountryISO>GB</CountryISO><Region>EUR</Region><SalesCode>BTU</SalesCode><NbNetworkInfo>20</NbNetworkInfo>-<NetworkInfo><MCCMNC>23410</MCCMNC><NetworkName>O2 UK Pay Monthly</NetworkName></NetworkInfo>-<NetworkInfo><MCCMNC>23410</MCCMNC><NetworkName>O2 UK Pay & Go</NetworkName></NetworkInfo>-<NetworkInfo>
CSC code is part of the HDSWVER code that is used for Kies /Ota updates if anyone actually uses that route .

You have corrupted CSC, Flash the rom again in Odin as CSC, i.e. put the MD5 file in CSC instead of PDA and it will fix the problem.
You have better reset your firmware by using "Firmware Upgrade And Initialization" in your Samsung KIES 2.5.0.12114_1.
You don't need a correct CSC for your phone as it will just download the firmware for you according to the serial number you provided to the software. However, please back up your phone first as it may delete all your data.
Is there a way to fix this WITHOUT resetting? I didn't encounter it until recently. I assume it's something related to using Mobile Odin, but not sure.

I am not sure about that. Maybe you just try to download the CSC corresponding to your firmware version and flash it with odin, but I don't know if it will reset your phone.
Anyone who really does know how to fix this (or if it is even necessary)?
I also had this problem. Reflashing the firmware again fix it for me.

Reflashed via desktop Odin, rooted via Chainfire's latest root method. Reset. Flashed CWM touch. Device status is Normal and CSC is correct.
Just for future reference, in case anyone searches for this later. This was the actual problem.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1950082
Simply reflashing the ROM via Mobile Odin and allowing the stock recovery to be flashed solved it. Flash the CWM recovery later, if you want it.
Works like a charm.
