I've been wondering about this since I just saw that the Galaxy Ace is a legacy device but how does a phone become legacy? I first thought legacy = old phone but that doesn't appear to be true.
My x10 mini pro is more a legacy than ace, the last update was sometime is last year and it's discontinued at 2.1, and ace just got official 2.3 released. Why can't there be a standalone section dedicated to galaxy ace? The specs are pretty good and potential for developing.
XDA ♥
The XDA admins really have incredibly little clue when it comes to handsets not sold in the US market, hence some really bizarre decisions.
Why the Huawei Ideos lacks its own section when it has 10x the count of released ROMs and more traffic on the misc android section (>50% of the threads there) than the Galaxy 5 and Galaxy Ace sections COMBINED is really beyond me.
Will informing them make a difference? And who governs the section management?
XDA ♥
Does it matter where this forum is placed? Developers know the specs and the phones and so does the users.
Yeah it does because nobody memorizes specs and phones so the placement of the section might play a part in determining its attention. I never knew there was an ace section because I don't browse legacy devices, in the end google brought me here

Even if this forum is not in the legacy section, it still wont change a thing. Devs are more interested to phones that are much marketed by manufacturers and telcoms.
Plus, there's a bunch of phones already in the index.
However, just for the sake of argument, Xperia X8 section is in the index and not in legacy even if GAce is much better in terms of specs and firmware but I see more activity here than in there.
Just shows that forumers would rather use the search function above than skim through the list of phones in the forum index.

When people are making changes to their firmware based on what they read here its important to be sure you are definietly looking at the right device section.
I thought there could have been another 'Galaxy Ace' which was now a Legacy phone. It's confusing when you see a new handset listed as Legacy.
True!
I've been thinking about this since I first day I entered the sub-forum.
I mean, how come LG P500 got its own section and SGA doesnt?!
We can compare P500 and SGA side by side in the term of specs and when it comes to dev-support I believe SGA isnt really far behind. (CM7 is currently being developed and SGS' GingerReal ROM will also be available for SGA soon)
So what's the deal with it? :/
Should we contact a moderator about this?
edit: Sorry, rubbish internet connection messed me up.
i guess a mod mistakenly put the sga to the lagacy cat. it's then got indexed by google and now it's too late to move it to the proper place since it will cause a huge amount of page not found from google serp.

Good point. A site will lose ranking if majority if pages are not found. However, an updated sitemap.xml could solve all that when the Google bots crawled xda-developers.com again.
Also, they don't have to worry about serp. xda forums is in vbulletin and the site is in Wordpress. They're using W3-cache and google sitemaps already soooooo... that's probably not the reason for the Galaxy Ace being in the legacy forums.
I'm trying to resolve this issue.
Please be patient.
Cheers
Thanks zecan! Honestly think this can attract more attention to ace in xda.

it would be so a fresh news ! We need to have a section in the index page ! We're not so old !

I'd really like to get the Galaxy S2, but not without Cyanogen Mod support. What do you think are the chances that the Galaxy S2 will get CM? The Galaxy S still has no stable CM Rom.

Polar bears don't.
But why doesn't the Galaxy S have a stable CM ROM then?
Stock Media Codecs > CM
if they find a way to keep all the goodies from Samsung then I'm all for it
Frankly, I don't care about the Samsung programmes. If it can be turned off, then ok, but I'd rather have the whole CM experience.
This hardly seems like the right forum for this thread...
So what's the right forum, if not the Galaxy S II Android Development Forum?
Android Development should only contain threads based on actual projects/ROMs/kernels/etc being developed. Discussions about what may or may not be coming to the device should go in general. Best rule of thumb in my book: if you're not actually developing something yourself, a thread shouldn't be started here.
Sorry if I came off like a prick - I just know that this ends up becoming more work for the mods who have to comb through and move threads around.
Also I apologize for theoretically hijacking your thread - Just trying to help keep people in the know
hopefully it will get CM

Maybe a moderator can move the thread into the appropriate forum.
What I really like to know is why the Galaxy S still hasn't got a stable release. Is this also to be expected with the S2?

I agree. Good post, and yes, this should have been in General. Just keep that in mind for the next time We are all excited for this phone, and i personally think that Samsung stock ROM is also quite good. However, to each his own, and I am sure that CM will be out for this phone too

The SGS2 is similar to the SGS in many ways, therefore CM will be difficult to port over.
Especially that there is no Nexus S 2 (a lot of CM7 is from the Nexus S)
Don't expect CM7+ to be running on the SGS2 anytime soon, although it probably eventually will. That's unless anything else happen (a/a genius comes along b/samsung open source more stuff c/Nexus S 2 is released d/sgs2 shares even more with the sgs than I though and current work can be ported over more easily)
This phone is fast enough without CM7. A clean up of the stock ROM, a new launcher and its sweet enough!

It will still miss the CM Tweaks.
A shame that Cyanogen has chosen the G2x as his next phone. The Galaxy S2 is way better than the G2x.

i'm not aware of the history, why exactly was it difficult to bring cyanogen to the original galaxy s, and hence this SGS2 as well? wasnt it like any other phone, the source was released, and cm team built from that?

When I clicked your link this thread was the number one result. And absolutely nothing on that page pertained to what he was asking about, the rest was stuff like a Mac Os X Snow Leopard In Depth - Android Market or 25 Android Apps to Learn About Any Disease. Trolling like this is getting to obnoxious levels on this forum.
To the op... Personally I use the Pulse app(it's a rss reader), and using it built in search added pretty much every thing with android and a couple others like engadget cnet, and lifehacker. A lot of the stories are the same but theres enough exclusive stories on each source that I keep like a bunch on there. Plus I go on here or search google if I have something specific I want to find.

Get us a CM9 port, that would boost the activity here
bad news... I don't know what coolya said about definately having an official version, but after that I really doubt it boys. Honestly so far CM7.2 by vo-1 is a very good rom, in my opinion is the most complete and stable and something tells me that it won't get any better than this.
I mean even if we won't get official, our ACE is still one hell of phone with this version of cyanogenmod on. And afterall, it's just a phone!!!!
In my opinion the thing is, all ROM cookers are separately working instead all collecting under the same roof and starting a big project (pointing at MIUI). Most of the phones which have CynogenMod or MIUI are on the main index, bacause? Its because those ROMs are made collectively by many developers at the same time.
It goes like this:
The bigger the project is - the more bugs spawn - more suggestions come - more mods come for them - more fixes - more themes - which ultimately leads to more activity in that particullar forum.
So as a viewpoint from a user, I'd like if all our developers come together no matter how much education he has about Android but they can contribute to the bigger goals. Make an official ROM for our Ace with widest possibilities of modding in it. I think we would gain our position back on the main index.
So what do you guys think?

I talk about it exactly as you said in the very recent past and never got an answer for that. I absolutely agree with you.
The bottom line is this... mobile phone market as every electronics market is moving so fast that our ACE is now cosidered an old device. Keeping that in mind along with the fact that ACE happens to be a mid range phone then game is over. So if we haven't got an official CyanogenMod by now that means that will never gonna get one. Actually if we haven't got anything by late January 2012 GAME IS OVER!!!

Copy that. But the device never gets older till it gets updates from the dedicated dev's who constantly develop for it, making those phones accomplish bigger tasks than the newer phones. Samsung Galaxy S is the biggest instance, which's still on the index.
Couldnt care less

Boy, is this a needless complication?
Android original v android non-orginal development is just confusing. More confusing when you look in the "original" section and there are loads of roms in there that are "CM7 based" which surely is enough to qualify them as non-original, or maybe they are original if they are original enough. Seems to me a lot of room for confusion amongst users, confusion among devs who feel their work qualified as original when perhaps mods think it isnt, and a lot of work for mods who are going to have to move things backwards and forwards.
it involves a lot of two and frowing for the forum users as well *headscratching*. If you wanted to split things down a bit why not just Rom Development, and Kernel Development/Scripts at least that wouldnt be complicated.

sorry if this is in the wrong place, but i have recently bought the A5 (a5009) and have searched high and low on xda, but cannot find any support for the phone on this forum. As it is related to the alpha line, i was wondering if this sub-forum will be the place for news or ROMs for the A3/A5/A7? or have i missed something?
i feel its a great phone, but touchwiz is so ugly compared to stock android (in my opinion), and this could sway me away from the phone if there is no support.
i have noticed that it can be rooted already, but i dont see much point unless there are custom roms available or am i missing the point?
many thanks

If you can, return your A5 and get the alpha! . It is the value for money phone of the new series... It has 3x faster cpu and many times faster GPU and better camera than A5. :good::good::good:
To be honest, i don't think that anybody with some hardware knowledge will buy A5 or A7 at least until the price drops to adequate levels.
I don't want to turn this into a comparison thread as I just wanted to know where on xda I can find out about the new A series, but the alpha here in the UK is more expensive.
With my job, having an expensive phone is not a good idea as it can get damaged easily, that's why I went with a mid - range phone this time. I still have time to think though, so I may change the phone yet.
Has the alpha got many roms available for it?

There is ongoing CM11 port and there are 2 custom roms based on stock ROM.
And i think, that there must be separate subforum for A series...
If you root your phone you can remove samsung crap and install launchers... and you'll get whatever software experience you want, you just need to spend some time with it.
P.S. look here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1660354&page=1712 it seems thet there are several requests for A5 forums... Just wait (and maybe add request) and there will be forums for your beautiful device to!

congrats on the cm progress. I would love to test out what you have and having a forum would make it easier

I bought it for that reason, i have the hardware knowledge and it's a qualcomm cpu, i've requested a forum for A3/A5/A7 devices, i've got kernel sources and msm8916 device tree for cm11/12,
now i just need the forum.
darkspr1te
@darkspr1te cool, do you have the sources uploaded? I would like to help out, I have the A500F.
Keep up the good work Darkspr1te. I am a bit of a noob on this and don't understand everything you say, but I'm looking forward to a mod for the A3.
Hopefully a forum will be opened soon.

Standard kernel sources can be found at samsung open source center. I have A500H/DS , sadly the sources i pulled wont even compile yet. Been busy on projects past week so i will only get into the sources again this wkend.
Still no feedback on a forum so i might hijack a thread here for now so I can at least start sharing.

Looking forward to a rom/mod for the A3!
love to see a galaxy A Custom Rom community.

you might want to start a thread on miscellaneous android dev.
Hello all, I have been following everything about the A3 recently since a cousin of mine just bought it; it´s so sad that there isnt a forum about this device. I would be happy to help on any new brews
It would be nice if they create a Galaxy A series forum. I have an A3, its a great small phone. I use it as my side phone(got a Note 4).
Recovery
Hey guys, I just found a Recovery, but it's Chinese. Working fine on A500M. Just flash with Odin. Now we can try to port Roms from other 410 SoC based devices!
ps: turn the phone on normally, and when the screen turn on, press volume down + power + home (yup, the same buttons of the download mode)
Srry by the bad english, I'm Brazilian
I was looking to get the A5 tomorrow...but the lack of a forum and ROMs is really making me hesitate.
