I am rooting soon and would like to know what rom is close to stock but takes out the bs apps like footprints and such, runs quick, lets me overclock, live wallpaper, has the basic functions working (google voice, marketplace, voice input, etc). Also why choose other roms vs. what I need? Do other roms have better functionality? Thank you for all for the great community especially the devs. Love you guys!

If you're looking for a rom that's close to stock try plain jane OR XTROM.
If you're looking for the fastest thing out there you'll want one of the froyo ROM's but they aren't stable yet.
try the plain_janeT2....... pretty much stock 2.1....... can overclock, a2sd, wifi tether...... removes apps like footprints, amazon, peep, stocks....

I had problems with web views on apps though with Ivans - presumably because it uses the 2.1 leak instead of the OTA. Id recommend PlainJain for HTC goodness, but XTROM for sweetness and speed. That thing is peppy.
Also, you can very easily remove stock apps yourself. So whichever ROM you choose, adb commands (or Root Explorer app), can get rid of em for ya.
I use titanium backup to freeze/uninstall apps.
I did a search for XTROM and nothing came up.

You realize that by dignifying his rant with a response, you've given it at least a small amount of validity.
Ignore him. That's pretty. no one I'd acknowledging his rant but you. Just let it go.
Also, check out evil eris in the coming days/weeks. I bet framework adds a lot more to it.

KaosFroyo, you don't need to partition SD cards to install apps to SD, Froyo does it automatically if set to install to SD.
I have a dream of becoming a developer, I absolutely love computers, and I absolutely love phones, especially androids, Iphones suck. So if anyone can give me a short guide on what to start downloading, etc. in order to start developing and any guides to developing would be nice. I current have access to my LG optimus T, my friends HTC Desire, and a LG Optimus S. Yes i realize the Optimus S and the Optimus T are basically the same, but those are the phones I have access to, any help to get me started would be much appreciated.

I think you can PM any one of the developers and ask them the details. They would surely help you.
firstly, learn about cooking a rom Its a really easy once you get the hang of it
have a same question in my mind!
but I am thinking about making one kernel not rom
because it's simple than making rom
I don't know any pro language

just don't be a troll with that 'iphone suck'.
Apple's phone in the 4 version is a good device.
My brother has one, got for a cheap price here in Brazil. (R$ 500,00 something like $200,00)
Using the system we can see how apple approach is on the minimum details level and Android isnt that cos we have too much fragmentation. (Btw, samsung have a very good android mod on Galaxy SII, gratz Samsung!)
So, i like android, i'm not going to try buy a iPhone, but hey, that thing has his merits, until 2007 we all are stuck with phones like blackberry or nokia, no touchscreen devices Thank you apple, AGAIN, PC+Phones. (but i never had a **** from you )
About development, good luck, i dont know how to build a custom rom yet

Kernels are harder to make IMO
Well... I'm myself embarking on this trip of developing Android apps (I'm a Software Engineer but I have not touched a line of code in a few years), and I can give you a couple of suggestions about it.
The good thing about Android apps development is that is totally free to start since the two main tools that you'll use are completely free: The Android SDK and Eclipse IDE. Tools-wise those are the only two things that you'll need initially (beside a fairly decent computer of course).
If you can spend a few bucks I've found that the book "Learning Android" is pretty good, with a good level of detail on the inner workings of the Android OS and a hands-on project throughout the whole book (and Android Twitter Client). The book is fairly recent (March 2011) so it covers Android Gingerbread, unfortunately the only issue with the book is that the Twitter client project was created before Twitter switched their authentication api from simple login to oAuth (a token based authentication API very popular nowadays), so the code on the book will not work right out of the box without some modifications on the authentication module. There's a new Andorid development book from the same publisher (O'reilly) available on Amazon called "Programming Android" which was released earlier this month, so I would guess that whatever the project is on that new one it should work right out of the box.
If you wanna get the hang of it without spending a buck you can start with a great tutorial series on Android development available on Youtube here: "TheNewBoston Android Tutorials". The tutorials cover Android development in much of the same way as most books, starting from scratch on installing and configuring the Android SDK and Eclipse to basic development and some advanced topics.
I must say that compared to the things that I was developing when I was still coding a few years ago (Java Enterprise Apps) Android development seems pretty much straight-forward, and I think that what really matters is changing the paradigm to "Mobile Apps", since they behave pretty much differently than normal enterprise apps.
Hope that helps.
Thank you so much, I used to do some Java coding for games so I know alot about Java, but ill check out all those things you all offered. Thanks! Oh and the iPhone thing, they're a good phone, but I can't afford one and prefer android.

I think the first thing you should and really most important thing to do is pick ONE problem and try and fix it. Maybe this is "I don't like that battery icon" or maybe it is something like "I want my kernel to swap out less and keep more data in RAM so it's a bit speedier".
Unfortunately there is so much going on in Android that probably no single developer can walk you through all of it, not even Linus Torvalds or Larry Page (like we say "We all stand on the shoulders of giants"). If you are new to Linux in general (which Android is) and you want to do some kernel work, a good first step is to start dual-booting Ubuntu or another friendly Linux distribution.
I am some experience with linux in computers, ps3's, even an experimental build me and a few others devoloped for an xbox which turned out unsuccessful. I just honestly dont know where to start to apply what I know to android phones.
here's a slightly dated but pretty good howto on Android kernel building
http://forums.androidcentral.com/htc-hero-rooting-roms-hacks/8072-how-build-your-own-kernel-package-source.html
lots of stuff comes up on google's pages about building Android
http://source.android.com/source/initializing.html
have fun!
Just want to know if anyone else knows about this new app that is in dev at the moment.
It is a way of having a dual boot with ios5 and android

As said in the other thread, Im not sure whether its a fake rip off or a real one. Apple hasn't and wouldn't give source codes for their crap.

Wow it would be really nice to have ios running on my SII. i love android, but showing the fanboys that our device can do both. It's priceless. keep up the good work
im interested in this project mostly because would be nice to test performance on the s2 but then you would run into issues like their retina display, apple would never allow it since there platform is copyright, but luckily this guy is named Anonymous

If he could create a script or program that could take an IPSW (Firmware file) and make it "android ready" for lack of a better term, he would be completely safe. As the user would be downloading the IPSW and supplying it not him. Also the IPSW are available freely on Apple's site so they couldn't come after the users at that point at all. He just has to find a way to do that (not going to be easy).
Also iOS source is available on apple's dev site for anyone to look at it. It's just mostly copywrited (besides the BSD portions). I'm not sure if all of it's there but I have looked at some of it in the past for hints to exploits for jailbreaking.

I have some development background, and from my knowledge of iOS and ARM Devices this would be quite a task if this is what he is doing.
I really want to believe this is real but I just found a link from github by someone called Peter42 who freshly uploaded a "BootDroid" code.
Last update to his blog dated 24 March is the same date the files were uploaded.
I have a Motorola Xoom and believe I can't test them.
Could anyone (for God's sake!) confirm whether they were real or not?
If possible, I already downloaded the files and would upload them for you in case original was removed.
this should be awesome, running ios in the powerfull SII... just for shutup the izombies xP
Even better, the upcoming Galaxy SIII!
But for real, can anyone try that?
I just ran the installation process on my Motorola Xoom and didn't notice any difference like a new app nor by or through restarting.
I'm kinda hyped up on this and would love to brag about how Android is superior to iOS if it was true

But as I said before, these files were uploaded the day he last updated his post.
You can download it from there.
I don't really know how this should work since it doesn't even have iOS firmware files but I figured someone with a supported device could try and see for himself.
Nothing appeared on my Xoom at all which is not supported!
And, you can uninstall it from the same installation wizard.

So, ive made a big switch. I went from a Captivate with 2.3, to my EVO 3D. Im currently running on 2.3.4 and Hboot 1.49.
Im looking to root the dev so i can remove some of the onboard rogers crap. Stuff in the background is running when i don't want it to. And some of the games and junk on here, i just want to get rid of.
Im reading several threads, but none of them are specific enough. Can someone point me to the proper rooting thread for this build? I dont plan on using a ROM, this OS is stable as it is.
As well, can someone recommend me an Antivirus? Ive heard of people starting to use these, maybe someone can suggest me one.
Thanks in advance,

Apparently you haven't read the important threads, otherwise you would have posted this in the right forum :')
Antivirus is overrated AFAIK, it's pretty much only an issue if you plan on installing unknown APKs or using third party app stores. I've been hacked once when I installed an unknown APK on my tablet, which resulted in a password reset of my Google account because my credentials were compromised and some prick attempted to log in to my account from Argentinia
I've looked at the other forum regulations and this was the one that came the closest to the subject. Then again, i also haven't been on the forum for about 6-9 months.
If someone can direct this thread to the proper section that would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

this forum is for ROM development. Your thread is about a question you have. That means this thread should go into Q&A (I honestly feel sorry for doing this, the Q&A forum is a very dark place where you can easily lose your mind among the imbeciles)
Definitively off dev thread ;-)
Depending on your hboot version many subprocesses are related.
My advise is to precisely indentify tour default settings then you will easily find out your happiness to clean what you dont want.
Btw, in dev section there are severals cleaned stock roms.
Depending on what you are looking for and consequences (root needed, s off, ...), make tour choice and enjoy.
Personnaly my favorite for daily usage is the Mwakious 3d one, but official ics update is coming since this morning all around the world (do not know for Roget)
Jump and enjoy this really Nice and Effective toy.

The Goal
To bring a new standard to the android platform, destroy, improve, rebuild. also, to put aside our egos and opinions and to work together as a community. if you dont like it you can always not use it!
>The journey, I my self will say if you just want the end product please leave this isnt the place. this is here to teach not to give.
Planned features
>Implement WebOS, FFOS or B2G in the the android platform. this is not another rom. it's a new firmware.
>Better multitasking, or true multitasking
>better handling of how the framework corresponding with the system. e.g. caching commonly used thing's for better load time over a crappy connection.
> a patch method so this can be merged with other UI's.
!Want to help?!?!
granted you may doubt yourself, dont just dont. anyone is free to contribute suggest etc. to make things easy here's a template. if you suggest something and it is not in this type of format, sorry it'll be ignored.
:UI
:System
:Hardware/software (E.g Lefty Mode. swapping the buttons layout to fit those who are left handed)
Ideas so far
MIUI theme chooser, say what you will it's a large customization option.
A new UI concept. if you have ideas just copy paste the format and add what you think is good/

this OP is subject to change, as more information is collected
thread gathered information
Web OS features, such as?
Social intragration into the android platform, e.g. Facebook, twitter G+ the mobile websites of these perform better than the apps, if we string some apis together for pictures sharing/posting and just load a webpage event in the "Social app" e.g. web.event.load="m.facebook.com" and share.event.activity.camera.post"userdefined_image _id"
suits vs folders string app categories together such as phone, mms, IM. tools calc, gps maps so on so forth. most likely will be a default.xml listing to categorize these into the proper groups. gapps wont be included cause the rom will be AOSP so im thinking calling external apks in a nice defined layout with gesture controls to switch
Focal points
Statusbar, I think It should do more. it's accessed from most apps and important things should go there, not just notifications. a simple mms grid layout with input for mobile number and text input also a list of unread messages. this could also push over to im services.
launcher: the dockbar should be optional imo, im thinking just have the all apps list in a corner with along press the dock pops out, also scroll able. so not just 5 apps sit there (some people dont like having apps on screen.
widgets: yea they're a thing to consider. as for the sense on other launchers, itd be easier to make widgets that look like it than integrate the actual ones
configuration. I think a major lacking point of android is user mapping for key's, why dont we have a leftie option? we all arent right handed. ill keep things in the thread as is so others can express there thoughts and add to this op will be updated later tonight.
OP/OC
So I see that our device has a huge collection of developers such as myself and many others. so I got to thinking (well the ambien did) and I thought (or it) that if all of us joined together and made a community driven rom (im talking better than the synergy collab here people) not just a rom but a little bit of the spirit that drives us enthusiast, noobs kangers scriptkids drunks stoners hell even moderators, any one who loves the ability of a rooted device. if we all came together put aside our differences and alliances just to bring something new, something innovative im not talking about some dinky apk that changes a few features on sense no im talking about something brand spanking new something that will make other device owners envy our device we can do it if we come together and work as a whole for the greater good, or should I say rom?
well who's with me?
noobs, themers users developer lurkers etc come forward step up lets see what ya got! call me a dreamer call me w/e I could care less. this could be the next big thing or the next nothing, it is up to you. ask not what your developer can do for you, but what you can do for your device

I see. Well, I suppose, since I've already posted something in evo 3d about a project i'm running, here's a link to it and let me know if maybe we post it on the first post. Maybe we can make a list of the projects going on..

Not sure what you mean by that BUT I will say that I'm not going to break any rules or get away from doing things the right way.....even if is not the popular thing to do at the time!
BUT this ain't about me or you or kangers or whatever, this is about something bigger then that!
Let's get this party started!!!!!!!!

put aside the differences and focus on collaborating to get more out of our device(s) the one thing that holds back developers is the ego and politics. so lets do away with that, thanks
