I bricked one Atrix already a few weeks ago, and have since gotten another...(don't wanna think about it)..
I had toyed with unlocking it, and 'rooted' using the gingerbreak method. I was then, bored, one day and installed CWM paid version(Since I had it on my Nexus One, and it popped up under 'my apps'). Out of curiosity I installed the bootloader via CWM, thinking it would fail before it broke anything..wrong.. It froze after a reboot, but after taking the battery out and back in came back up. Didn't think any more about it, and figured i'd finish the unlocking/flashing part some other time..
Meanwhile the annoying pending system update kept going off, and I inadvertently clicked download... it downloaded, so I figured might as well install and not worry about roms since with root I was able to use the google adhoc wifi apk, which is what I care about most. The install was stuck in an infinite loop. It would 'fail to load RSD', if you took the battery out it boot to android then reboot automatically for system update over and over. I tried using the RSD lite program at this point to flash back to stock rom, and ended up hard bricked...
So, forgive me for being a complete noob as I never had an issue with my nexus one. I am at 4.1.83, android 2.2.2. and baseband 1.7.15.. Which of the many tutorials and post should I follow? How safe are they? Did I brick because I had a partial 2.3.x install, and flashed back to a pre 2.3 base? I've read many post, but definitely a bit gun shy of bricking another Atrix. The phone keeps bugging me to update, and I keep hitting 'cancel'.
I'd like to unlock the boot loader for custom roms.
I'm also a heavy linux user, majority of tutorials seem to only imply windows with RSD lite? can this not be done with adb, and fastboot via linux?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1154600
I would personally go HERE Read through the entire post, then read it again. And go with the ATT 2.3.4 pudding+root
That of course is after reading and re-reading THIS post! (also linked in the post above mine.
Just my opinion.. and make sure you read and nkow what to expect!

That references 4.5.91 and unless I missed it, doesn't explicitly state it's backwards compatible with 4.1.83 and 2.2.2. is it?
Should I update first, to be at those levels and just know not to flash to an earlier build(pre 2.3.4/4.5.91)?

Nope, don't update. It's safer to unlock BL while you are still at 4.1.83, you just need to download the correct unlock file from the pudding thread.
Otherwise the unlocking steps are exactly the same.
The easiest steps to unlocking are here:
http://briefmobile.com/how-to-unlock-the-atrix-4g-bootloader
From there you can flash CWM in one minute.
From there you can flash any rom via CWM in two minutes.
Good luck and don't do anything stupid.
Wow I’m really drained I’ve spent a lot of hours trying to update to gingerbread (OTA) but just can’t get anything to work.
My phone Atrix 4G currently running build OLYFR_U4_1.8.3, the phone is rooted and has the webtop hack.
What I have tried so far
I have tried to flash the spf file using RSD lite with the new gingerbread update. No luck about 10 min in the program stops and says flash failed . I tried using RSD lite to flash back to an earlier version again same problem flash fails .
I have tried the over the air update and it failed; I got the yellow triangle, when I got the yellow triangle I swiped the bottom of the screen and it said DockService.apk failed, so I searched and found numerous people saying I had to revert back to the orginal files if I did the webtop hack. I reverted back to the orginal files using super manager but now my DockService.apk, PhonePortal.apk, and DockProvider.apk all say (no install); it looks like this:
DockService.apk(no install)
I tried installing the apk files using super manager and it attempts to but fails .
I’m really at a loss here I have no idea what to try anymore this is just really kicking my butt, could someone please help me or point me in the right directions. Thank you in advance.
are you trying to unlock your bootloader? or just upgrade?
Have you tried flashing the pudding SBF?
I had a problem with the update and originally flashed the Fruit Cake img files using fastboot. Maybe that will work. Look for the Fruit Cake Thread in the Dev section, or try the pudding SBF..

I just want to upgrade.
your best bet would be flashing back to 1.8.3 stock and then trying to upgrade

I saw the fruit cake thing last night, but I’m confused how to use it.
I know I see an option for fastboot when I turn the phone on holding the power and down volume button but that’s where my knowledge ends, can you tell me or point to a thread on how to Fastboot?
I haven’t heard of the pudding SBF I will look more into that now, thanks.

I have the spf file for 1.8.3 but when i try using RSDlite to flash back it fails??
Is there another way to flash back??
fastboot works in conjunction with the command prompt on your pc. It's much better than rsd
Anyone got any ideas on why in super manager my dockservice, portal, and dockprovider all say no install in the GUI??
Is this going to affect me in anyway?

Not true, he can flash pudding and not unlock. I hadn't unlocked for a month or so after I had pudding. It runs fine without running command line oem unlock. ^_^
I had the same problem.
I update my phone successfully only thru my PC.
Download and install automated update tool from motorola support site which will guide you through the update process. This tool will upgrade your device to Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) from any previously released version.

The guide worked perfect for me, easy to follow and straight forward. I am now updated and running the Alien Rom
I followed the instructions on this xda thread [http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1260517] to get 2.3.4, but instead seem to have a rather expensive paper weight. after Terminal had done its work, and rebooted the Atrix, i get the message "failed to boot 4. starting rsd mode." i cant boot into fastboot to do a hard reset, what are the next steps to hopefully bring it back to life? thanks

flash the .sbf that corresponds with your device in this thread here to go back to stock, and start over: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125944

you have to be in RSD mode for RSD lite to be able to detect your device, and to flash any .sbf
as long as you flash the right .sbf, unlocking is as easy as two quick fastboot commands. after you get past this, you get past the most complicated parts of customizing your Atrix.
sounds worryingly simple
also, is it correct that the original sbf should be around 650mb?? that seems enormous compared to the roms etc, and worse, will take hours to download on this holiday home internet before i embark on this, is that the right thing i'm looking at? or better can i flash straight to alien, which i already have downloaded? thanks

yes, .sbf files are a lot larger than ROMs. they include webtop, bootloader, and a few other things that increase the file size. you can't just flash alien without unlocking the bootloader either.
is reflashing the pudding files a smaller download option? or does it lead to downloading the same equivalent ammount?
i am having no luck getting any windows emulators to run, if i install linux can i run RSD from there?
are there any other RSD work arounds, without having the actual RSD application on windows? i dont have any access to windows cds to install VMWare or similar, and cant find any other way to do it on linux. I cant boot the phone into fastboot either to do a hard reset, is there another way to do that? thanks
*EDIT* for example can i use a terminal code like this "
chmod +x moto-fastboot-osx64
./moto-fastboot-osx64 flash boot XXXXXX.boot.img (work out what Tegra part you need to flash and change the XXXXXX to that!)
./moto-fastboot-osx64 flash system ORFR234-system.img
./moto-fastboot-osx64 flash webtop webtop.img
./moto-fastboot-osx64 reboot"
but change the img to the original atrix tmobile sbf?
im already rooted (used the old fashion command way)
i also need a good recovery (someone recommend the best one) ( i need to be able to do nan droid backups )
im going for jokers ICS rom ^.^
so please i need walk throughs that work with my version of atrix

the best way to unlock is to use the automatic bootloader unlocker !!

for how to do it, here's a youtube video describing the same !!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6a0BWquqAc
also do some research before doing it !!
and be sure, never flash sbf files or use rsd lite after unlocking the bootloader !!!
i unlocked my bootloader using the automatic unlocker (but i was on 2.3.4[4.5.91]) !!!
Well i need to unlock that to load custom roms right?

It has been a while since I rooted/unlocked the bootloader of my phone, but if I remember correctly, I followed similar steps as these.
Currently, I am using CWMs Touch Recovery, can be downloaded from their site, then flashed to the recovery partition using fastboot, I'm sure you know how to do this if you rooted the phone via command prompt. Do a google search, otherwise and current recovery image will do find for what you need, but read the reviews before flashing, some fail hard.
Once that is all done, you pretty much are all set, CWM Touch allows for backups to be completed, flashes to occure and wipes to happen.
I would also suggest that instead of just sticking with just jokersax, I would also suggest to check out turls, also available from jokers site. I personaly find turls to be a little more stable, and I seem to have minimal issues with turls, but everytime I see an update is available, I still jump to that one just to see what is up, then I may or may not jump back down, only because I can
After using turls and jokers ICS images, I haven't seen any downsides compared to stock, CM7, or any variants of the like, I love me my ICS. As far as official updates go, I wouldn't be too concerned about that, unless if somewhere else documented, I don't think the ATRIX will be seeing any official updates, but if something does show up, there is a script available on this site to resotre back to stock, then updates should work just fine. This tool seems to do the trick, I've used it personaly myself, got me right back to the stock moto install.
Stock ics from moto is official for q3 its on there site ^.^. But i want is sooner. Im just worried the new 2.3.6 update might of changed something

You have to flash an SBF File to your phone Via RSDLite your phone will reboot a few times don't be scared
Then go to command prompt and type in command
fastboot oem unlock
Will give you Unique ID
Then type in
fastboot OEM unlock ############ unique ID
Then bam Unlocked bootloader
Make sure you use the correct SBF File for AT&T
And make sure you have A fastboot.exe file in your android sdk
To flash CWM flash it through the app first then flash it to your phone via Command Prompt
On command prompt type
fastboot flash recovery recovery press shift should auto correct make sure it is in the same folder as your Fastboot.exe
CM9 Bell Atrix using XDA App
thank you so much! how hard is it to reverse this? ( the boot loader unlock) say if i need to RMA it to AT&T or something...also what do you guys use as a recovery and or what do you recommend?
Once you unlock your bootloader - you cannot reverse it - its permanent... you can never re-lock it.
so no more OTA updates?
Not easily - it can be done.... Most NEW Roms are built off the OTA's and are better than the stock releases..... OTA's are not really a big deal. Biggest issue with unlocking your bootloader is that it instantly voids any/all warranties.
*sigh* i know but mine is up as far as i know and i am already two years with the phone....so im just waiting for quad cores...
i was able to return my unlocked Atrix to AT&T by flashing the stock 2.3.4 blah.blah.91 sbf. This does not re-lock it but gets rid of the Unlocked msg at boot screen
thank you ! that's what i needed to know!
so can i install a new recovery before i unlock the boot loader? which would you recommend? as i need to do a nandroid >.< , i did all this on my moto backflip...a while ago..and well....it didnt need an unlock..

Wrong Version?
I am sure you guys are trying to help out, but most are missing an important fact in his request. I noticed this because I am looking for the same answer for the same version as the OP. 2.3.6
The solutions posted so far all refer to 2.3.4 and do not work with 2.3.6. The one updated thread with a link to a site that claims to work on 2.3.6, does not list the Atrix MB860 with 2.3.6, it does list it with 2.3.4.
This does not work, it gets an dialog box error "failed to chmod file: /data/local/tmp", then another that says "failed to get shell root"
The one thread that users claim it does work with 4.5.141.MB880.ATT.en.US, but that's not an option in the script. And they don't give a clue as to what steps they followed.
EDIT: Took a leap of faith, man that turned my stomach ( this is my wife's phone, I don't want to brick it ). I can confirm that the latest link past page 85 of http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1182871&highlight=automatic is valid as of 03/01/2012 and it is what I used. Followed the OP instructions and then then followed the prompts in the script. It did unlock, then I rooted and flashed CWM, option two.
Its the same as the 2.3.4 way. I figured it out an now have ics jokers rom

Ok I see that there are a couple of similar threads to this and I apologize in advance but I'm not sure exactly how to correctly interpret some of the answers on those threads...so I'm gonna start my own and see who can help lol. Once again I'm sorry if this new thread is considered obsolete by some or all.
I have a Motorola droid razr. Not the maxx just the standard razr. When I got my phone I started looking into rooting it after seeing one of my friends with a rooted thunderbolt. I successfully rooted my razr after doing a lot of research. I installed Titanium (not pro) and undelete. I'm fairly certain that I made a backup of everything on my phone shortly after installing Titanium Backup. Well through the course of tinkering around with my phone a bit I deleted certain files here and there that I considered useless or annoying to me that they were on my phone in the first place. Well when the upgrade to jellybean came out I tried to do a software update. It finishes, reboots my phone, then says the update was unsuccessful.
After some research I have realized that I probably deleted something that was important (lol yeah I'm an idiot) and so it wont let me update the software because of that. I realize that I could use titanium to restore those files but I have NO idea what files I deleted that were important. And I'm not all that comfortable with TB to just mess with it freely. TB has been something that I have used very little because I know I could probably cause some serious damage to my phone with it haha. I haven't done a factory reset because I know already that it wouldn't bring those files back.
If anyone can help me I would really appreciate it. I'm not a very technical person so I probably shouldn't have rooted in the first place but I tried my hardest to do the research first. Thanks in advance for the help everyone

It's never a good idea to do an OTA update over a rooted phone.
You should just download a rooted stock ROM from the dev forum (a 4.1 ROM) and flash it via your recovery (flash the zip file) or another custom ROM, they have some good ones!
OR I would just flash stock THEN do the OTA update, because whatever rooting method you used (I don't have that phone so I'm not sure) probably replaced your kernel with an insecure one or your system.img so you're failing the OTA update.

Is this a good source and video that might explain this to me a little better? I havent posted 10 times so i cant use the link but its a video on youtube called How to use fastboot files to return Droid Razr back to Android 2.3.5! It's the first vid that comes up. has about 9,300 views and was posted 7 months ago. I think my RAZR was on ice cream sandwich (not gingerbread) but it should be the same i guess? Thanks in advance everyone
The reason I suggest just flashing a custom ROM thru your recovery is once you RSD stock then do the OTA you're just going to want to root again and maybe flash a better custom ROM.
Just flash a CM10 ROM from the dev forum and see how you like it, it's jellybean with tons more options that the stock ROM.

The main issue i'm having is that after i rooted my phone flashing custom roms was pretty much the only aspect i didnt get into, so i'm not comfortable in the least with doing it. So just flashing a new rom might be a little strange for me. If i flash the stock rom will i lose everything i have? Like all my apps and pictures and info? And will it unroot my phone?? And if that video i posted above will work should i just try it that way?
I'm sorry to keep posting but I'm just trying to get some specific answers and I feel like if my thread falls too far down it will be forgotten lol. But that video title that I posted...does anyone know if that could be a viable solution? And if it isn't could someone explain. To me how to flash the stock rom so i can upgrade to ics. I don't think the razr has jellybean yet if I'm not mistaken
It sounds like you might be missing some of the stock apps. I had a similar problem while following the same upgrade path as you. I have a Verizon XT912 (standard RAZR) I'm lookin for a link to send you that helped with the issue...but basically there are several apps that would seem non-essential like Slacker radio or NFL Mobile that seem to have caused people trouble. If your update is failing at 30% or somewhere in the middle, this might be the problem. If this sounds like it could be it, Ill try and find the post that helped me find what I was missing.
watch your phone during the update, make sure its not actually cancelling and booting normally because of this error.
Do you know what version you were on before things happened? GB or ICS? You always use this utility just to start over and get back to stock. You could do like people are saying and get the files but this is easier. There is a version for either GB or ICS. Just need to get into AP Fast Boot mode and follow the directions. Also assume this is the Cdma phone? Here is something similar.
I would just start all over and flash.Make sure if you can that your phone is charged before starting.

I'm on gingerbread 2.3.6. So i can just go to the bootloader menu and use AP fast boot to do what? I'm a little confused lol sorry
So does anyone have any explanation? The only reason i'm so desperate is because i'm planning on potentially selling my razr for the note 2 and i cant do that if its unable to perform this update/missing apps/etc.. lol. please help
