ruh roh. Did this behavior just start on its own randomly? Sounds very similar to what mine was doing due to a failed USB port. I think there is at least one, maybe a couple more, other users on the forums here who also experienced USB port hardware failure. ended up doing a warranty replacement for mine.

Ya it completely started happening on its own.
Definitely seems to be the usb port.
Thanks for the heads up, gonna be contacting att in the morning

Yea that's a common problem. USB port defect.

I've already brought back 2 of these because of the same exact problem. I'm really starting to think it's because there is no cover/door over the USB port. Loved the slider on the cappy. Need a case that covers the port

There's a few threads on this. I personally started one. Best thing to do is just take it back to att.

While I certainly can't argue that covering the USB port is a bad thing, I carried an HTC aria (same port location, same type of case, same pocket) in a construction environment for more than a year with no USB port problems. While it certainly could be caused by lack of protection (pocket lint was my first thought when mine happened) I suspect a bad batch of Ports made it into the assembly line, due to the number of reports I've seen here. My bad one was purchased on launch day - anyone else have one go bad on a significantly more recent purchase?

Mine was doing the same thing, as well as going into "car mode" randomly and freezing up completely. I found a thread that suggested swabbing out the port with rubbing alcohol and a small paint brush. I did that and it cured the problem, but I also bought a case that covers the usb port (otterbox).
This all went down about three weeks ago and it hasn't happened since.

Wow, good to know...I was getting the car mode deal too. I'll be keeping this in mind for post-warranty issues. Thanks.

Seems like a common problem from a specific batch of them, so shouldn't be an issue to get a replacement.
Good luck!

Got my first one on black Friday, second one two weeks later, third one, a week or so after that. First two were a 1108, and 1110 builds from what I recall. Not sure what my latest build is, but I got this one at a different best buy (first two from the same best buy) so hopefully if it was a bad batch it won't happen to me with this new one. Knock on wood. This time I got best buy insurance. Seems good, $9.99 a month, no copay for replacement.

same usb problems
I am having some of the same problems. My phone thinks it is always charging, the fully charged notification is almost always up, and my computer cannot recognize the phone. I would send my phone in for a replacement, however the water indicator sticker is red (it got slightly wet).
Does anyone have any idea on what to do. Has anyone else had the rubbing alcohol method work?
I just went through this same issue, but I managed to fix mine on my own. I don't have the phone insurance through ATT, and the overseas warranty support center did everything that they could to deny service. Every time that I would call, they would repeat the steps that we had already been through in troubleshooting. I knew from reading here and other sites that the usb connector, or usb board was my problem. I started out cleaning it with alcohol and that seemed to help a little bit. The ultimate answer was to bend the pins in the middle of the USB connector in the direction of my screen, just a little bit. I have been three months now with no problem whatsoever. I didn't tell ATT that I did this, but I wanted to get a new phone, thinking that this fix would eventually cause the port to break altogether.
This ordeal was extremely frustrating for me, because I have been into phone hacks/flashing roms since the WinMo days. They tried to tell me on one of the calls that they had pushed an update to my phone that would fix it. I promptly told the lady on the phone that she was full of @#$#, as I knew the phone had obviously not been flashed or updated by her text message. She finally backpedaled and admitted that she was lying. It was hard to deal with this conversation without admitting what I knew about these phones. The sad fact is that at this time, my phone wasn't even rooted yet.
In the end, I did get a new, factory battery out of the deal. These idiots thought that a new battery would resolve the issue, even though I told them exactly what the problem was.
I was really pissed about the service I received. I am over an IT helpdesk for a software company. If any of my employees treated our customers like I was treated, they would be looking for work. I expect that they are just doing their jobs as supportbots, just like ATT wants them to.
I decided that if I ended up having to replace the USB board on my own dime, I was going to fix it, root it, unlock it and fleabay the thing. I was going to use the proceeds to pay the early termination fee and say goodbye to ATT forever.
I know that this was longwinded, but I have been holding this in for a while now. I posted this in one of the earlier threads, but then deleted it, thinking that I might need to reference the thread to show ATT that the USB issue was a known problem.
I don't have this issue, but a friend does. What would one do if this happened while their phone was rooted? How would you get back to stock with a dead port?
I had this issue a few weeks ago. About 100 times a day the phone would chime, thinking it had just been plugged in/unplugged. I cleaned out the USB port very well with rubbing alcohol (used a small paintbrush), as well as the internal battery contacts. I also stopped taking the phone in the bathroom while I showered, thinking that perhaps steam from the shower could be causing the problem. I'm not sure if the alcohol or keeping it out of the bathroom did it, but within a day or two the problem stopped, and hasn't repeated itself for 3 weeks or so.

I had the same issue and I manage to get to stock usingh Mobile odin, I went to the DSC or how ever is spell The repair center for att. and the guy took it tried to fix it but was no good, so he gave me a new one. And as the chatter kept going he said they would still take them even if there rooted becouse Samsung can just restore them back to stock much easier than we can. Maybe he was blowing smoke but sounded kinda true.
he said mine hjad some sort of corrosion on the USB port that made it think it was connected that's why it showed that.
I am currently having the same issue. I have an SGH-S959g, which is Straight Talk/Net 10's S II. I'm posting here because my phone is physically identical to the AT&T S II. At the suggestion of multiple forums, I've tried cleaning it out with rubbing alcohol. I even took apart the phone and cleaned the soldered connections to the logic board. There was virtually no corrosion on any of the port. I tried bending the pins slightly forward as well, because that has helped with other phones (Samsung and otherwise). None of this is solving my problem and, unfortunately, my month-to-month service means I have no option of being sent another phone. Any help would be immensely appreciated (especially if it contains a new idea or two to try).
Thanks in advance.

Had same issue, fixed it with ebay item 270993875674. I can't post links so you will have to search. I bought my S2 in fall of 2011, tried a different board it did not work. The Q&A forum led me to this ebay item to fix it. It's an easy fix, takes maybe 15-20 mins if you are being ultra careful.
So I'm more interest in this phone than the Tmobile version. I want the square body and don't need the bigger screen. I intend to unlock it. Don't care much for data cuz I got wifi everywhere.
Anyway, I keep seeing threads with hardware problems and it's discouraging me from buying one. I realized there will be lemons and bad batches but the more threads I see, the less confident I have.
I plan on buying it through craigslist, maybe a new one with all accessories + box (and possibly receipt) to avoid buying blacklisted/stolen ones and have warranty just in case.
did many of you guys have to do warranty exchange on your device? I would love to hear some feedback. Much thanks. Hope to join this forum soon. Getting tire of my vibrant. Haha!
What hardware problems.

If you are worried about hardware issues then buy new. Any hardware issues will occur with the first month. If that's the case then it's easier and faster to get an exchange.
I got mine the first day it came out back in October and never had any issues what so ever.
USB port failed on me.
No other issues unless you count the 2.3.6 update issues (software issue, not hardware).
Bought 2 on launch day. One had USB port failure roughly 6 weeks in. Second original and replacement have been fine.

The main issues you'll encounter are a screen with blotches on it due to SAMOLED screen (all Samsung phones with that screen type have those issues, including the T-mobile variant) and a USB port that is very sensitive.
That means plugging your phone in and not touching it afterwards (other than to unplug it, dope). For whatever reason, Samsung put no cover over this port so it's susceptible to whatever chucklefuckery you subject it to. Other than those two issues, the phone is good, even great.

Thanks for your input, guys. I usually take good care of my phones but I'm afraid of design flaws. I will probably pick one up this coming week. It's a great phone and I know I'm missing out. Can't wait. Thx again.
No hardware problems here...
Defects can affect anyone, and often they're more likely to happen in certain areas. The most likely places you'll have a problem are covered above - but they are not very common.
Remember, if you're on Tmo, no 3G. (Consider a GNex if you're going to be running a non-subsidized phone on Tmo, as I understand it the GNex is one of the first phones to have pentaband HSPA+)
hmmm had the phone since launch and didnt know about the USB thing lol, ive been hard on the USB and it has been perfect... I guess getting squaretrade warranty will give you a peace of mind.
Some people have had a defective USB port that shorted, but not many. Seems to happen fairly early if it happens.
USB ports that just don't work when a cable is plugged in (not charging, intermittent data) can usually be fixed with a new cable. MicroUSB moved the spring contacts (the most failure-prone/wear-prone item) from the device to the cable.
No issues at all for me from the hardware, best phone ever.
I know where your coming from, I was looking at the Nexus when it was released and all the bad publicity it got online kept me from getting it, and now I regret it because it was such a great phone

If it was a piece of Army equipment, I'd say hit it with a hammer. Phones don't react well to that maintenance system.
exact same thing happened to me... when a TINY amount of water got in the micro USB port. You're pretty much screwed, if it's water damage. You can either get a replacement or try and fix it, but I don't think you'll get very far if it's water damage.
I'm sure someone is going to flame you about the search button but it sounds like its the USB PCB it cost $7 from eBay, also the service manual can be found online takes less than 30 min to replace

phone works fine,
Hey guys,
Terrible tragedy here, had this phone for just a couple months and the audio jack started going wonky. Audio would cut out of one channel unless I spun the wire exactly the right way. Got tired of this, so I ordered a new jack for a few bucks and waited for it to come from China. When it finally did, I pulled my phone apart carefully following this guide:
dozuki-guide-pdfs.s3.amazonaws.com/durapowerglobal/guide_4_en.pdf
Not my first rodeo here, so it was pretty simple to take to apart, snap in the new jack, and put it all back together. Turned it on, and sound works, volume rocker, haptic buttons light up, vibrates, indicator light, all that good stuff. But the screen won't come on! Step 3 of that guide (the image is a little hard to see) has a black outline around the screen flex cable. Reseated that thing some 50 times already crossing fingers and praying to gods I don't believe in. Still nothing. I swear I was more careful with this repair than I've ever been with anything in the past, didn't crack anything, twist, bend, break anything, didn't go crossing wires or doing it while the phone was on. I can't see any reason why the screen won't turn on :crying: And the pricetag on a new screen is just about what the phone is! That, and of course there's no guarantee that a new screen would solve the problem if the issue happened to be on the board side of the connector.
Any advice? I'm grabbing at straws here and really don't want to have to drop money on another one just a few months after I bought it. Help greatly appreciated!
I am not sure what you can do, but since you had a legit issue with the phone that you didn't cause by doing something you shouldn't have, why didn't you get it exchanged under warranty?

Interesting... that thought never even crossed my mind. I guess my presumption was that a problem like that could be deemed damage to the phone if they insisted I had a wire plugged in and bent it or something to that effect. I guess I'm just so used to warranties not ever fixing anything that I forgot they existed. My natural reaction has become: something's broken? I'll have to fix it.
Though, I guess I could put it back together and bring it to a Verizon store and say the screen turned off and won't turn back on. Playing dumb may be a viable option.

Now that is fraud and I don't condone that. One thing to have a legit issue and they would have sent you a refurb with no issues.
Now that you have damaged your phone you should pony up and pay to get it fixed.

Ye warranty man wth lol....but thats what that 5 extra bucks a month goes to huh......i mean your insurance you got on your 700 dollar phone right now that its really messed up
My mistake, I didn't mean to cite fraud on this board. I'm simply frustrated with something that doesn't make sense to me and looking for a viable option that doesn't involve a $700 price tag. If I dropped it or got it wet I'd pay the bill, no problem. That I can clearly say is my fault and I messed up. I'm just astounded as someone who builds and repairs laptops, has fixed countless cell phones, ipods, etc. that simply unplugging a wire and plugging it back in would make the screen completely stop working with no signs of life. I just can't make sense of WHY it happened. If I could, I could blame myself and accept the bill for it and call it a lesson learned. But I haven't learned anything, other than that 99% of the time when I carefully replace parts everything will work fine, and 1% of the time - the time when the replacement bill is over 200% the original bill - something will strangely go wrong without any reasonable explanation.

Samsung doesn't charge an insane amount to fix the screen. Not anywhere close to 700.
The end of the day, the screen worked fine, you took the phone apart, screen now doesn't work, your fault. You did something. Everyone makes mistakes. You have a lesson to learn here, you just don't like it. Your lesson should be to have it replaced with a refurbed unit through Verizon not fix it yourself while under warranty unless they deem your issue not covered by warranty.
Warranties are interesting things. They sometimes cover things they shouldn't and don't cover things they should. Laptop warranties cover the AC port. I've sent laptops off for customers in the past where they obviously broke the AC port by putting extreme force against the AC cord. MFG still covered it. Not every company is out to get you.
I've only had to do it once with my Rezound. Got the refurb in a few days and sent my original one back. Was simple. I also didn't pay a dime.

I was going to wire tether and I plugged it up via the stock USB cable that came with it and all the sudden it started smoking and I unplugged it and my charger port is ruined. So has this happened to anyone? I just had a mouse plugged in the same port and it was working fine! So anyone have this happen to them? Also how can I do warranty? Screen issues, etc. Anyway exaxtly a week after the first phone came my entire account of 4 lines got cut off!!! 3 years of paying the bill on time and no problems they marked my account as fraud and the fraud department wouldnt do anything!!! They said it was marked as fraud cause I had two insurance claims in one day on the same line.... so two of my htc ones was insurance replacements even though they were supposed to be warrenty and on top of that I don't even have insurance on any line of my account!!!!! Att got all of there phones back except for the good working replacement. I was forced to open up another account with them as they wouldnt open the other account.. they didnt charge any etfs so all of my lines recent upgrades can now upgrade again

Instead of opening another thread about this, I'd thought I'd post here instead. This is all still fresh in my mind as I type this because my micro-USB port also fried on me no more than an hour ago.
Just over an hour ago I went to plug in my HTC One into the same charger I always plug it into every night and the red light indicator did not show up. I thought maybe it was not fully connected so I unplugged it and re-plugged it up close to my face to make sure I was making a proper connection. That is when I smelt something burnt. I quickly removed the cable before any more damage was done but unfortunately it was too late. I tried other cables and they all producing a burnt smell on both the phone end and the charger cable end. I charged my phone just fine to 100% the night before with no issues. I have never had an issue charging any phones in the past and never had an issue charging the phone until today. In fact, my charger is plugged into a surge protector which is even more baffling to me. Anyhow, I was able to pull the cable before any noticeable damage was done to the port but obviously damage was done since it smells burnt and won't charge my phone at all.
I will be taking this phone to ATT tomorrow afternoon after work to get a new phone. I do have insurance on my plan but they had better waive the $120 fee for a new phone and give me a brand new phone because I take immaculate care of my phone and my phone looks like it is in perfect, brand new condition (no scratches or any visible damage). I keep a case on it at all times to prevent damage and I don't mishandle the device. This is alarming to hear that other people have had this issue with an HTC One as well and makes me inclined to think that it maybe more than just a fluke accident like a surge of current.
Has anyone else had this issue with their HTC One? I've never had a phones usb port fry so this is quite new to me and I was wondering how common it is and if it is, is it more common with the HTC One?
