ruh roh. Did this behavior just start on its own randomly? Sounds very similar to what mine was doing due to a failed USB port. I think there is at least one, maybe a couple more, other users on the forums here who also experienced USB port hardware failure. ended up doing a warranty replacement for mine.

Ya it completely started happening on its own.
Definitely seems to be the usb port.
Thanks for the heads up, gonna be contacting att in the morning

Yea that's a common problem. USB port defect.

I've already brought back 2 of these because of the same exact problem. I'm really starting to think it's because there is no cover/door over the USB port. Loved the slider on the cappy. Need a case that covers the port

There's a few threads on this. I personally started one. Best thing to do is just take it back to att.

While I certainly can't argue that covering the USB port is a bad thing, I carried an HTC aria (same port location, same type of case, same pocket) in a construction environment for more than a year with no USB port problems. While it certainly could be caused by lack of protection (pocket lint was my first thought when mine happened) I suspect a bad batch of Ports made it into the assembly line, due to the number of reports I've seen here. My bad one was purchased on launch day - anyone else have one go bad on a significantly more recent purchase?

Mine was doing the same thing, as well as going into "car mode" randomly and freezing up completely. I found a thread that suggested swabbing out the port with rubbing alcohol and a small paint brush. I did that and it cured the problem, but I also bought a case that covers the usb port (otterbox).
This all went down about three weeks ago and it hasn't happened since.

Wow, good to know...I was getting the car mode deal too. I'll be keeping this in mind for post-warranty issues. Thanks.

Seems like a common problem from a specific batch of them, so shouldn't be an issue to get a replacement.
Good luck!

Got my first one on black Friday, second one two weeks later, third one, a week or so after that. First two were a 1108, and 1110 builds from what I recall. Not sure what my latest build is, but I got this one at a different best buy (first two from the same best buy) so hopefully if it was a bad batch it won't happen to me with this new one. Knock on wood. This time I got best buy insurance. Seems good, $9.99 a month, no copay for replacement.

same usb problems
I am having some of the same problems. My phone thinks it is always charging, the fully charged notification is almost always up, and my computer cannot recognize the phone. I would send my phone in for a replacement, however the water indicator sticker is red (it got slightly wet).
Does anyone have any idea on what to do. Has anyone else had the rubbing alcohol method work?
I just went through this same issue, but I managed to fix mine on my own. I don't have the phone insurance through ATT, and the overseas warranty support center did everything that they could to deny service. Every time that I would call, they would repeat the steps that we had already been through in troubleshooting. I knew from reading here and other sites that the usb connector, or usb board was my problem. I started out cleaning it with alcohol and that seemed to help a little bit. The ultimate answer was to bend the pins in the middle of the USB connector in the direction of my screen, just a little bit. I have been three months now with no problem whatsoever. I didn't tell ATT that I did this, but I wanted to get a new phone, thinking that this fix would eventually cause the port to break altogether.
This ordeal was extremely frustrating for me, because I have been into phone hacks/flashing roms since the WinMo days. They tried to tell me on one of the calls that they had pushed an update to my phone that would fix it. I promptly told the lady on the phone that she was full of @#$#, as I knew the phone had obviously not been flashed or updated by her text message. She finally backpedaled and admitted that she was lying. It was hard to deal with this conversation without admitting what I knew about these phones. The sad fact is that at this time, my phone wasn't even rooted yet.
In the end, I did get a new, factory battery out of the deal. These idiots thought that a new battery would resolve the issue, even though I told them exactly what the problem was.
I was really pissed about the service I received. I am over an IT helpdesk for a software company. If any of my employees treated our customers like I was treated, they would be looking for work. I expect that they are just doing their jobs as supportbots, just like ATT wants them to.
I decided that if I ended up having to replace the USB board on my own dime, I was going to fix it, root it, unlock it and fleabay the thing. I was going to use the proceeds to pay the early termination fee and say goodbye to ATT forever.
I know that this was longwinded, but I have been holding this in for a while now. I posted this in one of the earlier threads, but then deleted it, thinking that I might need to reference the thread to show ATT that the USB issue was a known problem.
I don't have this issue, but a friend does. What would one do if this happened while their phone was rooted? How would you get back to stock with a dead port?
I had this issue a few weeks ago. About 100 times a day the phone would chime, thinking it had just been plugged in/unplugged. I cleaned out the USB port very well with rubbing alcohol (used a small paintbrush), as well as the internal battery contacts. I also stopped taking the phone in the bathroom while I showered, thinking that perhaps steam from the shower could be causing the problem. I'm not sure if the alcohol or keeping it out of the bathroom did it, but within a day or two the problem stopped, and hasn't repeated itself for 3 weeks or so.

I had the same issue and I manage to get to stock usingh Mobile odin, I went to the DSC or how ever is spell The repair center for att. and the guy took it tried to fix it but was no good, so he gave me a new one. And as the chatter kept going he said they would still take them even if there rooted becouse Samsung can just restore them back to stock much easier than we can. Maybe he was blowing smoke but sounded kinda true.
he said mine hjad some sort of corrosion on the USB port that made it think it was connected that's why it showed that.
I am currently having the same issue. I have an SGH-S959g, which is Straight Talk/Net 10's S II. I'm posting here because my phone is physically identical to the AT&T S II. At the suggestion of multiple forums, I've tried cleaning it out with rubbing alcohol. I even took apart the phone and cleaned the soldered connections to the logic board. There was virtually no corrosion on any of the port. I tried bending the pins slightly forward as well, because that has helped with other phones (Samsung and otherwise). None of this is solving my problem and, unfortunately, my month-to-month service means I have no option of being sent another phone. Any help would be immensely appreciated (especially if it contains a new idea or two to try).
Thanks in advance.

Had same issue, fixed it with ebay item 270993875674. I can't post links so you will have to search. I bought my S2 in fall of 2011, tried a different board it did not work. The Q&A forum led me to this ebay item to fix it. It's an easy fix, takes maybe 15-20 mins if you are being ultra careful.

So I was up one night, with my rooted eris. Lying in bed, texting my girlfriend because she refused to let me sleep, I thought nothing of it. My phone was plugged in, and I fell asleep on top of it >.<
Now most of the time my phone will automatically scroll to the left.
I have reset my phone and tried other ROMs and it's all the same. I read in the forums that there is no fix but that was as of 5-xx-10
So i was wondering.... Is there a fix now or am I going to have to get a new phone??
And if i do have to get a new phone Would it be a refurb or would it be a NEW phone???
I would prefer to get a new phone... My Eris just doesnt seem to cut it anymore.
I had this issue and it turned out being a hardware issue. I traded it in for a replacement. It was refurbished from different parts. I haven't had any problems with the one I have and I have had it longer than my first Eris.

Lucky you, i haven't even got a year into my NEW contract with this phone yet. I would love to have verizon give me a new phone, but somehow im doubting they will
my wife's eris was doing the same thing, but when we took it to verizon they it didn't do it in front of them (kinda like how a car's "doing something" until you take it to the mechanics... figures) and so they told her they can't do anything about it
this is actually the 2nd phone to do it, the first was brand new this one is a refurb

When I took mine in, they replaced it with no questions asked. It is a known issue that many people have had. In that situation I would probably try to speak to someone else. Also, I remember that the problem seemed to happen more when charging.
it is an issue with the trackball and the insulation around it in some eris's. take it in and verizon should give you a replacement.
Customer Support
I'm on my 3rd Eris now, after having the left scrolling problem on both phones. My first was not rooted, second was, and ultimately proved to be a common hardware issue. In my experience, the store itself can be quite difficult to deal with. What I have done, which has yet to fail me, is call technical support and go over your symptoms. They connected me, both times, with someone from the more advanced technical assistance. I told them that I had the latest update and had no physical damage, and they told me it needed to be replaced. Ask them, and they happily agree, to call your local store and see if there are any replacements available in stock. They will then put an indication on your account that a replacement is necessary and when you arrive at the store, you will not have to go through the staff in the stores judgement. Just let them know they will need to replace the phone and to look at notes on your account. Otherwise, the techie will simply send you a phone from the warehouse and you must send back the defective one, charging you nothing in the process. I know some of that is repeat information, but unfortunately have not had much luck with this phone. I mentioned the issue to the tech support and they mentioned that you can usually claim a new upgraded phone after 4-5 warranty replacements. Just some FYI from my unfortunate experience. Good luck all!

I started having this problem a couple days ago on my 2nd Eris. I called Verizon and explained the problem in a calm manner and they denied any knowledge of this being an issue with Eris. Naturally they are sending me a replacement Eris but the weird thing is they agreed to send me an Incredible at no charge if I have any trouble with the Eris that is en route to me. So, um yeah, they know this is a known Eris problem.

So, I'm assuming you need to have insurance on the phone in order for them to replace it??? Or will they simply replace any defective Eris??
I bought my Eris virtually unused from a guy on craigslist (he, obviously, bought it through Verizon)...is there any chance they would replace it?

OK so Verizon is sending me a replacement for my auto-scrolling phone. Kind of annoying only having one screen but at least I can use my phone until the replacement arrives.

I fixed mine by replacing the usb port and cleaning the Tball rollers with alcohol.
But what I think was most helpful in correcting it was;
The usb port and Tball are on a separate daughter board, held down by 2 screws. When removing it, I noticed the screws seemed loose. Putting it back together, I made sure they were tight.
Replacing the usb port (daughter board) was just because I had a spare. I think its a matter of the board coming loose and maybe dirty rollers.
At the same time the Tball started messing up, I noticed the usb port was getting wiggly.

Dropped from my night stand to the floor. Even has a case on it. Will no longer turn back on, tried everything possible. I'm a little confused, I know the phone wasn't made from the greatest material, but this is a little ridiculous. I pre-ordered it for $750 a couple weeks before release, I can't accept that my investment is ruined from a very minor accident.
Probably a long shot, but can anybody think of what could have possibly happened inside the phone that could cause this non-operation? Perhaps something came loose or just broke off? I'm so desperate, I just might disassemble the whole thing and put it back together out of hopelessness. I'm going to contact the UK Samsung soon as I can and see if there is anything I can do, but I doubt that will get anywhere. See I KNEW the ONE time I didn't buy an Otterbox for my phone, something like this would happen. The SGSIII is just too damn big for an Otterbox.

Yup did it all, even brought it into AT&T and they tried putting a different battery in it from another SGSIII. Nothing comes on, no LED, no sounds. Very strange, the only thing I can possibly think is that it is defective because no phone in existence should stop working so easily.

Any updates?
Definitely request a replacement, had mine drop from really long distances and had no scratches / still functions perfectly.
I've heard of Galaxy S3s suddenly losing power altogether ie. totally unable to power on etc. My telco CSO told me that it was a hardware defect found in the first batch of phones. That might be your problem and the fall could just be a coincidence. Definitely request for a replacement. And maybe get an Otterbox this time? I'm using a Commuter and I don't find it too bulky at all! Cheers.

I've yet to get ahold of the UK Samsung, as the US Samsung doesn't handle the GT-I9300. My backup phone has an issue calling the international number, so as soon as I get another phone I'll have to give them a call and see what they can do.

That would make a lot of sense, seeing as a lot of other people have had their share of drops with the SIII and it still works fine, as most of todays smartphones should. I really hope Samsung will be able to do something about it, I recently lost one phone I just bought in the mail (sent to wrong address, stolen off porch, $430), and if I lose this one that's about $1200 in phones in the past 2 months.
Anyone have any tips for a Note not charging? Tried a few cables. It is rooted and has a custom ROM, so I feel like I am stuck between a rock and a hard place.
Anyone have any experience with this that maybe could point me in the direction of how to get my phone back to working normally?
Flash back to stock?
Does it still connect to your computer? If it's not charging & not connecting, your charging port is probably broken. You could probably manage with an external battery charger & a couple of batteries you can charge & rotate, like these-
Try blowing the port out with compressed air? Otherwise, yeah, you're looking at a replacement phone.

Same thing happened to a 'friend'. That part is very easy to change out. I don't know if you can buy it by itself though. What I 'heard' you can do is buy a new note from BB switch the charging ports and return it. Just make sure the battery is charged when u return it.

Yeah. I tried around 3 or 4 chargers (car, oem, etc.), and none worked. I got home last night... Plugged it into my computer with a cable I had left at my computer, and it was charged in the morning.
Maybe I can give it some more time to make sure it wasn't something just disrupting the pin connections.

The exact same thing happened to me. My Note stopped charging completely. As previously stated, you can get an external battery charger but your best bet might be a replacement phone.
From what I was told by a local phone repair shop, its not an easy fix. I'm not sure how correct that is.
However, AT&T replaced mine and it was quite an easy process.

I am little worried about the replacement issue I called them and they are replacing it but I have two hairline cracks in my bezel I hope they don't charge me for physical damage :'( :'(

My phone just stopped charging. Luckily, it has 50% charge left, and I have a backup iPhone. Has anyone else experienced this problem and had their phone successfully replaced?
If so, did you go through AT&T or Samsung? If I go into an AT&T store, will they be able to give me a replacement right there? If not, will they at least be able to start the repair process?

I claimed a warranty exchange. Went to AT&T and they gave me the warranty number. I don't think I've ever had a phone swapped in-store even though I have insurance.

Your charging port could be broken, you can always buy a wall charger for cheap on amazon to charge your battery..and might as well pick up another battery while your at it. Very convenient.

That's a good short term fix, but it's inconvenient and by the time you get that wall charger you'll have a new phone via warranty exchange.
I have a OEM charging cradle and battery I got on shopandroid for cheap. It was well worth it.

Just for those looking at this thread that have this problem, I had a good experience getting my phone by replaced for free, and rather quickly by AT&T. My full post can be found over here.

Anyone have any tips for a Note not charging? Tried a few cables. It is rooted and has a custom ROM, so I feel like I am stuck between a rock and a hard place.
Anyone have any experience with this that maybe could point me in the direction of how to get my phone back to working normally?

I have the same problem with my 3 month old note (At&t i717). No pressure pull or anything was done to the phones USB port in fact it happened in the middle of the night while charging, it just stopped charging on its own. It's stock rom never rooted 2.3.6. Picked up the phone this morning was about 50% i didnt pay too much attention, got in the car and plugged in and noticed it is not charging. I thought its my trusty Chinese charger but it was not, came back home tried home charger the laptop plus USB cable and non worked. I am using original home charger and samsung USB cable. Cleaning the port did nothing. Rebooting few times and pulling the battery out did not help either.
And then the strangest thing happened. While it was plugged in (without me even touching it) after 20 minutes of being plugged in suddenly it made its DING sound and started charging. It has been charging everywhere since then, that was a few hours ago. I am worried it may do this again. It is definitely a software issue to me. I didn't touch the phone and started recharging all on its own!
I bought this note off Craigslist and its only about 3 months old and still under warranty but I don't have the receipt so Samsung says f/u. Very pissed at Samsungs poor customer service, really rude people in the Philippines at customer service, when I told them I bought the phone on Craigslist used, they acted like I have stolen their family jewels and did not want to talk to me. They came up with lame BS excuses like warranty doesn't transfer to second owner (it does, it's mandatory in the USA magnuson moss act ). HTC in contrast has always services my used phones without receipt using the IMEI they check and know it's still under warranty. They place a temporary charge on the card but they have never charged me anything and have promptly repaired my phones multiple times over the past couple of years.
I've replaced my phone twice under a try warranty. It was super easy and the second time they sent me a brand new device. Also have your charger replaced as well, it a warranty issue also.

My phone charges but it seems to be thinking it's always charging even when unplugged. I use it to play music at the bar I work at & it kept going in car docking mode which I never use. My battery was almost dead but it fully charged after the night was done. I went to change the battery to see if that was the problem and when I turned it off the battery charging image came up while it was off with nothing plugged in. Now my battery status keeps flashing & changes from regular size to mini size. Has anyone ever experienced this?

Searching goes a long way here my friend. This is a common problem for a lot of people. (I've never experienced it, but many others have). The solution seems to have been cleaning out the mini usb port on the phone with some 91% isopropyl rubbing alcohol and a que tip. Or if that doesn't work it may be a bad usb port.

I don't know what kind of Que tips you use but the ones I have don't fit. I used tissue folded over and it's still screwy. I think something's loose in the or something because sometimes shaking it makes it stop for a bit. If I get a new usb port from e bay will the one for the i9100 work in mine?

I guess I'm in the same boat with you. Noticed a couple of days ago the phone stopped making the little chime when you connect/disconnect the charger. Yesterday I took it off the charger and after a couple hours it was down to 40% without me using it. Today, I swapped batteries and had the same problem with the battery icon. One second it shows about 3/4 full, the next it says 100%. Then I couldn't get it to boot, just kept cycling through the battery icon. Got it booted and not only does it say charging when not connected, the USB icon is in the Stat bar saying it is MTP-connected. Guess it is time for warranty.:crying:

Are you on a custom rom too? What do you think will be the replacement, the s3? I have insurance on it too, might have to go back to stock tho.

I'm on stock, but rooted. If they will give me an S3 I will be very happy. Having seen how many people have had issues with the crappy USB connector on this phone, I may have to insist.
The likely option will be the sky rocket... maybe the oneX. Unfortunately, I don't see them giving out S3's.

Isn't that like a downgrade? If rather fix it myself by buying a usb port from eBay.

Sky rocket yes. I wouldn't say the one x is a downgrade necessarily
At this point I might be ready to get away from Samsung. My SI had to be replaced 3 times. The S2 has had some weird issues, but worked until this started 2 days ago. I had an HTC before (WinMo) that is still working fine today. Maybe I'll have better luck with the 1X seeing how apparently Samsung can't make phones that last.
I got an S2 as a replacement. Not a Skyrocket, so it depends on when you call. Otherwise all they would offer me was the skyrocket or 2 windows phones.

What do you think would be easier, getting the part & fixing it myself or using Odin with a tricky usb port to revert back to stock? I also lost my att splash screen by using that gs2 boot screen changing app. I got rid of the app a while back & have used a couple different roms but it seems permanent.

I don't think switching out the part will be too difficult. I have the same exact problem and am planning on switching the port and ribbon sometime in the next couple weeks. I think I've read that the i9100 one works just fine.

I think the problem is actually in the logic board and not just the connector. Even if you fix it the problem will likely reoccur in time. I don't want my phone repaired, even by AT$T, just to have it fail again, but out of warranty next time. I had to have my Captivate replaced 3 times. Maybe it's time to go back to HTC. It sucks, because I love this phone.

Mine started happening after I spilt water on the end of the charging cable and didn't let it dry off completely before plugging it in. Do you still think it would be in the logic board? Then again, it seems like more and more people are getting this problem. And of course, it's just as the warranty is expiring on these phones.

I may have splashed water too, I'm not sure cause I didn't check at the time. I was working at the bar playing music. It seemed to be just a drop on the screen. What's the logic board? Could maybe flashing a new rom fix it?

If it's a physical problem with hardware, no software changes can fix it.

Mine had nothing to do with water. I just think the micro USB connector is a poor design for something that has to be plugged and unplugged as often as a smartphone does and in the kind of environment we use them, especially in the car. The logic board is what the connector mounts to. It takes the signals from the connector and relays that information to determine whether the connection is for charging, PC connection or some other I/O function. Over time the process of disconnecting/connecting will weaken the solder joints and/or cause the thin traces in the ribbon cable to possibly short against each other and create the issues we are seeing. That's why the problems can be seen even after the cable is unplugged. Replacing just the connector will likely not solve the problem.
Talked to support. They are sending me another SII (refurbished). They wanted me to do a factory reset and download an update as part of their troubleshooting. I insisted that no software update would fix a hardware problem. *****ed enough to get them to drop it and send me another phone. My phone is rooted stock 2.3.4. Do you lose root with a reset? If I send it in rooted will that cause me trouble with the warranty dept. even though it isn't relevant to what is wrong with the phone?

Nick says they don't check. I dunno. All I know is if they can prove you messed with the phone and voided your warranty you'll get a bill for 400$
I know this thread had been on here already and i look for help but still found no resolution to the problems. So Please i am bringing it up again to see if any help can be offered again.
This started back in April, my phone suddenly stopped charging one day from any outlet, charger and even through the computer. There are times it charge but very slow and other times it won't charge at all. I have tried new chargers, batteries, outlets, rebooted and even had new roms in there. All did not do anything to help. I purchased this phone from Expansys- USA. The warranty was still good so I sent it in. The wait time was 6-8 weeks.
Those bastards at Samsung made me wait 3 months and I barely got it back this week. After 3 GODDAMN months in repair, it came back in no better condition than when it left. WTFFFF!!!!!
Now I am extremely angry for wasting my time like that. Since it came back, i have more problems than when it left. The phone now does not recognize any charger other than the Samsung Official charger. It will only light up the charging symbol from a Samsung charger or when i plugged into a computer. Other than that it won't recognize any other charger. Now the first day i got it back, it charged fine. Then a few hours later, the same problem surfaced and now i am back at square one.
Please help me, this is really frustrating and i have not found any solution anywhere on this forum or other sites. Even Samsung didn't do jack for me. Now my only options left are to get a new phone (which i do not want to) or replace the USB ports, and I am not even sure if it is the USB ports.
PLEASE HELPPPPP!!!
It is sad to hear that your S3 is not working, nevertheless be careful with what language you are using .
maybe this will help: https://www.google.com/search?q=S3+...xda&rls=com.microsoft:en-US:{referrer:source} ??
you could try to get back to the service centre?
otherwise, if you are not satisfied with Samsung buy another phone...
get a short, thick charging lead, this solved my charging issues.
Sent via TCP/IP
Thanks, but the service center is in the UK for international S3 and i have no contacts with them. Expansys USA won't give me any info.
Try use another cable, i encountered the same problem, i changed 3 charger but my problem was cable.
Okay thanks for reassuring me that warranties are not only carp in my country. Maybe your port need cleaning, also does your phone enter driving mode at random? As I had a similar issue.

Problems with electronic items aren't uncommon, failures with Samsung don't appear any higher than most other manufacturers but do occur.
Buying a model with no warranty service in your continent is probably best avoided, you might have been lucky but the chance of requiring a repair during the two year period is worth considering.
The phone is not a piece of crap Its just your unluckiness. Hope you get your device repaired soon

I dont mean to offend anyone, I apologize for it. I mean to say that Samsung is not helping me out as it should. I have tried numerous cables and also clean my ports many times.
Unluckiness may be this time for me, but my issue is not an isolated incident. However, coming from a high tier phone like this is disappointing.
I have tried contacting Samsung UK who told me they handle warranty repairs through a 3rd party. I contacted that 3rd party, and i'm not sure if that 3rd party is the one Expansys-USA sent my phone too. However, that 3rd party said they don't handle international repairs -__-, back to square one. Now that i got my phone back, I really don't know what to do. I believed i have exhausted all my options and now trying to replace the port. But I don't see any issues with it, but i'll update after. I really can't afford another phone.
I had a recent similar problem with my phone refusing to charge or taking 2-3 hours to increase by a few miserable percent. This followed some slight liquid (beer) entering the reverse of the phone following a boozy night out that resulting in no recollection of what actually happened. I suspected the battery had suffered liquid damage and following contact with EE regarding a possible replacement on the insurance I paid for they refused to replace it (I never told them what actually happened). A week or so later I simply tired using another charger which worked without any issues at all. Reverting back to the original for confirmation, this did the same thing as before. I was fortunate not to have ruined the phone and/or battery and the issue came back to the charger. It's always worth a shot
WEll the phone finally wokrs now!! ANd the problem was hardware this entire time -_-.....i replaced the usb port and everything good again. The usb port didn't appear to show any signs of wear and tear either. Well now this is my solution for those with similar problems. thanks for all your help again.
