[Q] flash rom or radio first? - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Quick question. I couldn't find the answer searching. I am upgrading from bamf 1.6.3 to 1.8.6 and will also be upgrading to the mr2 radio. Should I flash the Rom and then the radio? Or vice versa? Thanks.

Flash the ROM first. You won't have service. Then flash the radio from bootloader.

Really, though, it doesn't matter. The thing to avoid is getting into a bootloop where the ROM won't boot completely, but the radio is still named pg05img.zip on the root of your sdcard, so you can't get into recovery and fix the ROM.
As far as I'm aware, the only side effect of having a mismatched radio/ROM combo is that you'll have no service. Can someone verify this?

Ok Thanks guys. I have everything downloaded currently and on the root of my sd card. So going to flash the rom, then rename radio file, and flash the radio.

Ok, I flashed rom then radio and everything looked good. I did a restart after restoring everything with titanium backup and now its stuck on the Thunderbolt screen. What should I do? It's been like this for 15 minutes.

If everything went well before TB, reflash, and don't restore any system apps. Some suggest not using TB to restore data either. Makeva nandroid before restoring anything.

Did you restore system data too? sometimes that can bugger things up. I usually only restore system settings that are in green, if any.
You can always just wipe and reflash the rom.

Ok. I just pulled out the battery and rebooted and all was fine. I did restore system settings that were in green. So I guess that may have been it.

I would like to add that's the H BOOT not CWM. I know its common sense for some but Ive seen this cause issues in some of the other threads.

I had the same question when I started out. I'll make it easy on you.
Go into recovery, use the volume buttons to toggle up and down. Go to wipe data / factory reset. Select it and then confirm it. Then go to wipe cache partition and do the same. Then go to advanced and select wipe davlik. THAT IS HOW TO WIPE. This is recommended to do before flashing a new ROM.
Can't get past the update

That's easy to get past. Just load a PGIMG05.zip file onto the ROOT of your SD card. ROOT means without being in any folders. If you're on BAMF 3.0 then you're on Gingerbread. So find the RUU file for unsigned Gingerbread RUU and place it on the ROOT. Then do an Hboot. Which is Power down and volume up at the same time when the phone is off. Make sure you don't have any PGIMG05 files on the ROOT. You probably do because you rooted your phone. If you don't you could end up with S back on.
**You did flash the correct Gingerbread radio...right?
**I have no clue where the Gingerbread RUU is. If you find it, please post it. It will be a fairly large file. Probably around 300mb+
EDIT:
I'm sorry but the RUU for Gingerbread isn't out yet. Try Hbooting the MR1 then Hboot the MR2 Radio RUU which is 2.3.4 base.
Link to Jcase radio thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=997724&highlight=RUU
I'm pretty sure, you'll need to flash the "PG05IMG_Mecha_VERIZON_WWE_1.13.605.7_Radio_1.16.00.0402w_NV_8k_1.41_9k_1.64_release_182727_signed.zip" on that page which should be the last link.
Take your SD Card out, put in a reader or another Android phone and delete the radio file from it.

I've had this problem too and I've wiped and reflashed from scratch to fix it.
But this happens to all my backups, making nandroid backups virtually useless to me now. Anybody know why this happens? I've never had a problem like this before and it started after trying to restore from the new CM7 back to bamf 2.1....
A common solution would be to backup the SD Card and reformat it in Clockwork or with SDFormatter.. NOT IN WINDOWS.
When the house gets dirty, you have to clean it.

I have search every possible thread regarding restoring a nandroid and have tried every possible fix... my only solution, which DID WORK, was to format/system, do a full wipe of all three, and then flash the original zip, I cant use any nandroids at all!!! if any one know why please tell me how to restore a nandroid for future use. thanks
format did not work for me either.
restores worked for me at when i came off of Synergy's ROM back to bamf3.0, but coming outta CM7 to bamf 3.0 busted it again...very strange.

I am using th3orys inj3ct rom and just wanted to see what Synergy was all about, when I wasn't impressed i tried to restore my nandroid (which i made right before i flashed synergy) and that is when all the trouble started... i tried everything that I know of and just had to reflash the original ROM and start from scratch, sux but at least my phone is back on.
I had this issue over the weekend. However I did do a restore prior to getting the error... I was texting my gf, and all of a sudden my screen wouldn't turn on... Pulled the battery and when i booted up I kept getting the error.
I had a PG05IMG.zip on my SD card so if I tried to boot to recovery from boot menu it wouldn't let me.
I took my SD card and plugged it into a PC using an adapter. Deleted the PG05IMG.zip and then booted to recovery. Restored my latest backup (3 days old) and everything worked.

[Q] Is it safe to restore individual partitions? If so which ones?

For some reason my backups using Romracer's CWM don't work. I get stuck in a bootloop every time I restore and I'm clearing data, cache, and dalvik cache before restoring. So I was wondering if instead of restoring the whole backup, if it was safe to restore just the system partition and not the boot partition (since currently the phone boots up fine)? If so, I could restore my system and data and not have to deal with whatever's causing the bootloop. The phone is running CM7 beta, so the boot partition is whatever is used with that.
The beta uses a specific kernal so it wouldn't work with anything either than CM7.
But yes if you restore just the system it will work.
What kind of bootloop is it? Do you make it to the boot animation? Or not past the logo

Sorry, that confused me. You're saying that in general, if I was running stock, I could only restore the system partition and it would be fine. But since I'm running CM7 I can't restore a stock system partition, only a CM7 system partition?

It doesn't make it to the boot animation. But this is only when I'm restoring stock. If I flash a stock fruitcake to get back to factory settings and then root. I can flash a CM7 recovery just fine. It's flashing back to stock from CM7 (or even just being in stock and flashing the stock recovery I just made) that's the problem. I'm going to give it one more shot, but not until the weekend. So if it works or doesn't work then, I'll post back here.
I'm just curious as to which version of romracer's CWM you have? It sounds like the problem described here is similar to what you're seeing.
I recently rooted my atrix, unlocked the bootloader, and updated to faux enhanced 0.20 stock kernel as my first test into flashing anything. I wanted to start flashing ROMS, including CM7, so this thread caught my attention. I'm really trying to avoid any problems so I've been trying to read as much as possible about potential issues before making any major changes.
I only have backups made using atrix4.1, so if this is the same one you have I may just end up holding off on flashing anything other than the kernel for now.

Accidentally Updated After Rooting

Hi,
I accidentally updated to Gingerbread on my Thunderbolt, and I forgot I rooted my phone, by the time I remembered it already had a blue android and an explaimation mark. So I did some random crap, and probley made it worse.
First I did the vol down power thing went to factory reset it loaded CWM v4.0.1.4
I wiped cache patition
Dalvick cache
and Battery stats
then I wiped data/factory reset
It loaded like it was brand new everything seemed fine till I updated and did same thing so I wiped the data again and now it keeps auto updating so I have to keep my internet off
and it's annoying as crap
I'm a noob so I don't understand stuff
should I go ahead with this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1009423
I couldn't understand it and if your not rooted why would you unroot I don't get that part...
Do I still have root?
What does flash exactly mean?
Current Specs (I don't know what to give but I'll guess)
Thunderbolt
Top says
Mecha XD S-OFF
HBOOT 6.04.1002
eMMC-boot
Android Version 2.2.1
(tell me if you need any other info)
Should I upgrade to gingerbread any way
Download a customer rom, put it on your sd card and flash it in CWM. I'm running BAMF forever and like it. There are plenty of roms to choose from. This should stop the update. After running the rom if you decide you like stock better you can flash the stock rom back and take the update. You will loose root.
Pull the update off the SD. It will stop flashing it

2) is the recovery stock or CWM?
3) do you have a recent back up made?

1. it boots up all the way, turns off after 10-20s each time, regardless of what action i'm taking

3. no backups recent or not
4. i don't know if i 'have it' but when i load hboot the status is 's-off'
Does it crash or shut off? Maybe a hardware problem?

If you clear the cache, the shutdowns will stop.
But the OTA will download again, and in a few days you will have to repeat the process.
A custom ROM fixed me, but now the same thing poped up.
May go back to stock .... trying xdabolt, but in the process lost my data.

sounds like you still have s-off. Anything you are trying to save like app data is gone if you do not have a back up. I would down load a customer rom or even one of the rooted stock versions with the latest OTA and flash that with CWM recovery. Be sure to clear cache and dalvick wipe first when you flash it. There are RUU you could use to return it to stock, but you will lose root. I'm running BAMF forever 1.0.9 and like it. Play around with some roms and if you don't like them use a RUU to restore you back to stock. Most important is make sure you read up on things first.

unrooting is good and all, but if that happens again, just look around for the newest ruu and find a rooted version. most ruu get rooted that day... heck i had 2.11.605.5 rooted b4 verizon released it (the 2nd leak, the one WITH working vm notifications) thanks to eris of course. then you'd be up to date, stock, rooted... all you'd have to do is wipe dalvik, cache, and system... keep the data (if coming from sense 2.1 rom) and you'd be good.
i don't mess with sense 2.1/3.0 hybrid or 3.0 roms anymore, for this very reason. a ton of incompatibilities between the roms and framework, causing you to have to wipe data when switching... what a pita! i haven't wiped data in months. keep the data always to make life easier...
if you have problems, use clockwork's "fix permissions" and reboot. problem not solved? then retry rom installation WIPING EVERYTHING, then at least you tried to keep your stuff. titanium backup is great for backing up apps + data, so you can import the data back when you're stable on the new rom... just restore the apps + data for the necessary apps, and app only for the stuff that doesn't mnatter... never restore system apps + data for roms with severely different basebands or from completely different roms. unrooting won't be necessary next time

If the phones rooted you can prolly get into recovery VIA hboot.
If its not rooted you can prolly find a ota ruu and flash it in hboot. U can do that if its rooted too but ull lose root. Or if its a locked s off there's methods to roll back to factory and turn s on. And yes delete the orig update off the card

[Q] Problems after CM7.2; more problems trying to revert

Decided I better ask for help before digging a deeper hole...
I had rooted my Vibrant around September 2010 and tried some ROM at the time, don't remember which one. I didn't keep it for very long...I accepted one or two stock OTA updates thereafter, ending up with 2.1-update1/KA6.
Fast forward to yesterday, when I decided to try to go to Gingerbread so as to be able to install an app I wanted. I chose CM7.2. I presumed I wasn't rooted anymore after the OTA's, so used CWM to run the update.zip that I still had on the SD card from 2010. I did a Titanium backup. I started following the abbreviated directions, then went to the full directions here:http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Vibrant:_Full_Update_Guide
So I actually made two nandroid backups as a result of switching between the two sets of directions and getting distracted after I made the first one.
All went well, except after CM7.2 was booted and everything restored from Titanium, I had the following issues:
1. Messaging was broken
2. Most contacts were missing
3. GPS wouldn't lock
I poked around for fixes and tried some, but it was not looking promising. I decided I didn't really need that new app after all, and today tried to revert to stock. I supposed it would be a simple matter of a nandroid restore followed by a Titanium restore. Unfortunately the nandroid restore failed.
Research revealed this is a known issue with "different hboots".
I then compounded the issue by accidentally pressing the power button while in Recovery. The phone rebooted but stuck on the "Vibrant" splash screen, because of the corrupted restore attempt. No amount of 3-button resets got me back to Recovery. The phone is now connected to my laptop in Download mode.
I think what I now need to do is odin, per http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=13132341#post13132341
I will then be able to do a nandroid restore and Titanium restore and be back where I started? Any additional hints, warnings, etc?
Thanks in advance.
Be careful about what you backup with Titanium on stock and then restore on CM. Did you backup your Messaging app or any system data? If you restored system apps or data from a TI backup onto CM from stock, that could cause issues.
And about the contacts, where did you store them before? On Google, SIM, or in memory?
I may have clicked, in Titanium, "restore app and data" rather than just "data" for the messaging app. Thinking that may have been the case, I thought that reinstalling the ROM or Google apps zip files might fix it. It didn't. (this was before I soft-bricked)
Since I needed a working phone this afternoon, I went ahead and did the Odin thing. That went well. I am back to JFD and my contacts are back.
If I do a nandroid restore now, followed by a Titanium restore, it should get me back to where I was before starting the move to CM7.2, right? Except I would still have a JFD radio? (because nandroid does not touch that, as I recall)
In that case, finding a KA6 to install with odin would be best? And would there be any point to the nandroid restore if I did that?
GPS took a very long time to lock after going back to JFD, too. I think perhaps I need to try the antenna fix.
Maybe I will give CM7.2 another go...

If you do a nandroid restore you don't need to do a TI restore as nandroid will restore all your apps and data. (Even down to which wallpaper you're using and Wifi networks)
If the KA6 modem works best for you then go for it.

You don't need to be rooted, you just need a way to install. For example when you install from stock, you don't need to root it, only flash the custom kernel that has CWM, and then flash, since root is a state of the ROM.

[Q] Suddenly roaming with full bars and triangle on top

I think i might have got to comfortable with my phone and possibly screwed something up in the process.
I recently have been Installing and Removing various ROMS on my phone so I can find one I am happy with and stick to as a DAILY.
I recently deleted from the SD Card all the folders in it besides DCIM, MUSIC, and my own Media. I figured its just an SD Card even if I removed it the phone should still operate. But I haven't touched anything Internally on the phone itself. Just always making CLEAN installs before installing ROMS under Amon Ra WIPE ALL. Which it skips my SD.
So for some reason now I have no Mobile Network on my phone it says its Disconnected. It also shows Full bars but with a TRIANGLE
over it now. I want to go back to regular data. I have a Nandroid Backup of my HTC Rezounds FACTORY ICS Build. While it help if I reverted to that? and started over with the ROM I like?
Have you tried long pressing on Mobile Network in settings and seeing if you it shows LTE/CDMA?
It does, and it is selected.
Take a look at this.
I found a way to take it off of ROAMING. In system select I switched the CDMA ROAMING MODE from Automatic B (I think it was) to Home.
I have a feeling it has something to do with a rom I installed last night. MIUI it might have change some options in the phone internal system
to thinking its not in the US. Im running stock ICS HTC at the moment from my NAN backup of Amon Ra. But at the moment its showing FULL SIGNAL BARS
& then seconds later no Signal Bars with an X over it. The verizon wireless rep told me that I was connecting to their SERVERS. I can also make calls but only under Automatic B settings in Roaming.
Im not sure what to do at this point. I wish there was someway I could reset the phone SIGNAL OR DATA OR CONNECTION SETTINGS or radio or something. o DEFAULT. I even reset back to my NANDROID Backup and WIPED all before I did that and I was still having the same problem. It doesnt make sense to me unless its a TOWER near by that is Out of order.

You always have the option of flashing a RUU and with that putting your phone back to bone stock.

i would say start from scratch, flash the global ruu twice, pull the. zip followed by a factory reset. thats what I would do, if I was in your shoes.

Or reflash your ROM. If you can do a dirty flash you can just flash over it and I think you won't lose your set up. That should restore any necessary folders/files if that's the issue.
Oh! What about this... Format it in recovery or via your phone in settings. Since there's that option it should put whatever is needed on there.
If you can't tell, I'm just brainstorming here... I don't know what the files and folders are but seems to me formatting it from within the phone should work or why would you be able to do it?
EDIT: I just reread your post where you posted the pic. I guess you probably have more issues than just the ext sd. Probably best to RUU it and get back to stock and start from scratch. Then you know it's all good and clean.
Thanks

Where can I find the right GLOBAL RUU for my phone?
So I flash the RUU twice one after another. Delete the zip? and Boot and do a factory reset?
I would appreciate any links you can forward me to for the Global RUU!
:victory:Thanks in advanced.
It used to be here:
http://www.androidpolice.com/2012/0...ull-ruu-build-4-03-605-2-for-the-htc-rezound/
But I just read today that all those mirrors are taken down.
Check the Developer section in the Vigor Shipped RUU thread.
Here's the link from that thread:
http://www.androidfiles.org/ruu/?dir=Vigor
You don't need to factory reset after running the RUU, it puts it all back to factory stock anyway. Relock before you run it:
fastboot oem lock
And after it's done you'll need to unlock again and flash a recovery, root, then flash custom rom.

I went into Amon Ra and did a CLEAN WIPE. I wiped everything in the internal storage it was completely blank (I check it under My Computer)
I then restored my Nandroid Backup of my STOCK ICS from Verizon and HTC and Im still getting the same error.
"I found a way to take it off of ROAMING. In system select I switched the CDMA ROAMING MODE from Automatic B (I think it was) to Home.
at the moment its showing FULL SIGNAL BARS & then seconds later no Signal Bars with an X over it. The verizon wireless rep told me that I was connecting to their SERVERS."

Are you S-On or Off? If S-On, your nandroid may have missed a file that is necessary that can only be replaced by flashing a RUU. Just throwing ideas against the wall.
If I remember correctly, a nandroid from S-On can't touch the kernel and coming from MIUI there may be files that are missing or modified.
In that case, you may be able to pull the stock boot.IMG from the RUU you were on and push that to restore the files.

I am S-On. Its so weird I cant wrap my head around it.
Another funny thing is I've before restored my Nandroid backup when I needed it with a ROM I had that was Unstable and it was working like it should I was back to normal.
Im thinking it has something to do with their towers in my area. But I called a friend that has Verizon as well and he seems to be handling alright.
I just dont get it. Im going to try that RUU flash and see if that works after I eat dinner and possibly relock my phone.

Free-flow thinking there. Lol. It's looks like a RUU is going to be your best bet.

It used to be here:

But I just read today that all those mirrors are taken down.
Check the Developer section in the Vigor Shipped RUU thread.
Here's the link from that thread:
http://www.androidfiles.org/ruu/?dir=Vigor
You don't need to factory reset after running the RUU, it puts it all back to factory stock anyway. Relock before you run it:
fastboot oem lock
And after it's done you'll need to unlock again and flash a recovery, root, then flash custom rom.

The android police website did have the RUU files but they are .zip only to flash in recovery they where PH98IMG.zip files.
So im not sure what to do.
hey
Im trying to run the RUU .exe files but the arent executing. I double click the .exe files but nothing happens. I locked my phone so now I dont have access to the bootloader =( I feel like throwing this thing in a river:crying: at this point.

Quoted the wrong post this is for the zip files.
You should only have to shorten the name to PH98IMG. All the RUUs I've seen are some longer name (usually the name of the site hosting them_PH98IMG.)
Then just place it on the root of your external SD and boot into Hboot.

Are you still working on this?
You should be able to RUU from a zip file. Just make sure it's named PH98IMG.zip, put it on your card and then boot into hboot. It should find that file and run it. Let it run through a few times, do its thing and it should reboot when it's done.
I came back here cuz I just ran across this post from another thread:

Could it be because I don't have an SDcard? My phone doesn't read SDcards anymore, so I'm using only the internal storage.
Thanks again!

So that guy is using his phone normally without the external card. What happens if you boot up with the external card out of the phone?
I think it has something to do with the hardware on my phone that started not functioning. I did try going into recovery wiping the whole phone wiping my sd card and then placing the zip file in my sd card. I then booted into H boot and from ADB locked my phone rebooted and then it started to read the zip file and reinstalled to factory reset. I let it reinstall the files let it do its thing it restarted a couple of times reinstalled everything needed went back into the lock screen and was still having the same issue till now. But it's okay because I called Verizon Wireless spoke with him on the phone and I still have my extended warranty on the phone and they concluded that it was a hardware issue so I got to replace my phone for free lol

Although the problem wasnt solved I still appreciate everyone's help on the matter.

Go to phone dialer and put *#*#3646#*#* then go to phone information. Look for a drop down menu and make sure its on CDMA/LTE Only (or anything really with CDMA and LTE in it, that specific one may not show up on your list depending on what ruu your on.) That changes the specifics of how the radio operates incoming connections. Set your data settings back to HOME and turn off roaming. Lemme know if that works.
