I am pretty sure the answer is send it back and get a new phone, but I thought I'd ask here first.
I tried an Odin flash of my own ROM pulled from my phone via using dd on the different partitions. I had a SUCCESSFUL Odin flash, and the phone turned off to reboot after the flash, as it always does for me.
Instead of turning on, however, the phone is completely dead. No power, nothing on the screen, the power button does nothing. I have tried pulling the battery, plugging it in, and all sort of combinations of power and volume keys. Nothing.
Bricked, or does anyone have any suggestions?
An actual true brick? I'm both amazed and saddened at the same time.
My condolences in your time of loss

I am assuming it is a true brick, but the other 25 times I've assumed it was bricked, it turned out that I could recover with a little more effort. So far, thought, no luck on this one.
I would think if the power button is unresponsive like it is, you stated you also tried after battery pull, with battery, with just power cable, with both, tried the volume buttons incase something got remapped, that she's a goner. Did you try usb to the computer instead of power? Or touching the home or menu button portions of the screen? That last one is a shot in the dark but cant hurt. Beyond that and every other button combo you've tried, I'm out of ideas.

Try this, get it into DOWNLOAD MODE AND ODIN FLASH IT.
here you go.... If you feel like you semi-bricked your phone and cannot boot into download mode.. there is a trick that might work for some or it might not doesn't hurt to try, but damn sure worked for me... Make sure phone is connected to computer with ODIN Opened,..
1. Unplug your phone from usb
2. Take out battery (and mini sd and sim)
3. Plug usb back into phone.
4. Hold down up and down volume keys while putting battery back into the phone. IT SHOULD BOOT INTO DOWNLOAD MODE. if not sorry. Sometimes when people flash back and forth the up and down volume keys get reversed... so try volume down and power.. or volume up and power. GOOD LUCK!!!

I had the same problem today and I tried this method and it worked
just FYI
Hello, I was trying to flash my phone using ODIN and Eugene's 2.2 ROM. Things were going well, until I accidentally nudged my computer, which apparently has a very loose USB port. ODIN tells me that the phone disconnected. Plugging and unplugging the phone again would not work, so I was forced to do a battery pull. I am now stuck at the Phone /!\ PC screen, and the Volume Up, Down, Power button sequences do not work. Am I totally screwed?
Thanks.

No, youre not screwed. Remember that the Vibrant is nearly impossible to kill. Reboot and hold both volume buttons + power at the same time and when you see "Vibrant" on your screen turn to black then let go of power and Download mode will pop up. Then do Odin.
My phone went to that screen as well. Didn't get there the same way but here's what got me to download mode...
Pull battery, sim card, and sd card. Put battery back in but do not turn on. Plug usb cable into computer and phone. Start Odin. Hopefully your phone shows the charging image, now hold both volume buttons and power button until the vibrant screen comes up. Immediately release the power button, keep holding other two buttons. It should boot into download mode.
Flash with Odin like normal and then replace sim card and sd card. I had to do this twice yesterday.

Unfortunately when I plug in the USB cable after putting the battery in, it does not show the charging screen, but the Phone /!\ PC screen. Additionally, starting up the phone while holding the Volume Up, Down and Power buttons also brings me to the same screen. It seems like my phone is the kind that does not have the 3 button download mode option. Is there any other way to get out of this screen?
Well, I've never had that situation but I'm pretty sure it's fixable. The Vibrant is almost impossible to brick.
You'll gave to keep searching and wait for someone more knowledgeable than me...

Well the help is much appreciated anyways! I hope I don't have to hack a microUSB cable with soldered resistors and such. Does anyone have any ideas?

i just fixed my phone when it was like that, just plug the usb cable in, hold both vol buttons and the power button, it may take a minute or so, but you will see your screen go completely black, let go of the power button and keep holding the vol buttons, and you will get in download mode, trust me, i panicked just like you, just keep trying it, it took me about 30 minutes to get in download mode
Thanks for the advice! Should the battery be in while I'm doing this? If so, should I put the battery in before the usb cable?

yes put the battery in, and then plug in the usb cable
Heres whats happening right now: when I plug in the USB cable, hold down the Volume Up, Down, and Power buttons, a few seconds later the screen will go black, at which point I unpress the power button. But this does not bring me to the download mode, it just brings me back to the error screen. If I press all 3 buttons again, as before eventually the screen will turn to black, but it will always bring back the error screen. It also behaves the same whether the USB cable is plugged in or not. I suppose this is progress, but am I doing something wrong? Arent I just supposed to let go of the power button when its black?
I am having the same problem except I am only getting the Vibrant screen. I have been trying to fix this for hours, and am about ready to go swap the damn phone out. It is literally driving me crazy. NONE of the methods to get to download mode are working.
[A] I'm screwed, arent I. (Brick, Phone ! PC, no download mode)
From what I hear, 1 in 3 Vibrants won't go into download mode in this situation. Mine does it just fine, my buddy's phone - no dice. I bricked it, so I fixed it. The solution was the spare micro usb + solder + 301k resistor(s). It worked perfectly, the 1st time. I'm a skeptic turned believer! It cost about $8.00 for the cable & resistors at Fry's Electronics.
Sigh, I guess I'm going to have to build this thing then, which is great because the nearest radio shack is 5 miles from my place. Ah well, better than having no phone.
I commend you in your efforts! Once you get out of this you'll be truly unbrickable. GL!
I was discouraged by the fact that I was far from a Radio Shack, but I looked online and it turns out you can actually create a resistor by drawing a line in pencil on a piece of paper. I have a multitester and stripped phone wire, and was able to duct tape the wire on specific points to get 302Kohms! Unfortunately thats where the project stopped, because I don't have a spare microUSB cable to butcher haha. And a friend offered to drive me to radio shack so I don't have to be the poorest electrician ever.
I might still try that method though! Just for kicks.
Try this
Ok, so I see some ppl offered advice on how to get into download mode. That is great, but I found their methods to be very different from mine. So give this a go and see if it works before you go into MacGyver mode.
Please note: DO NOT PRESS THE POWER BUTTON EVER DURING THESE INSTRUCTIONS.
1. Take back cover off phone
2. Remove the battery
3. Plug the USB into your computer, and then the other end into your phone.
4. Hold down both volume buttons (do not press the power button!) and while holding them both down put your battery back in.
5. Hold in place for approximately 2 seconds.
You should now be in download mode. Keep in mind, you said that your usb on your computer is "loose." Be extra careful not to bump it or anything b/c if the phone isn't being recognized as plugged into a computer download mode will not work. Hope this helps!
I got back to stock via odin. I tried to re root and it will not let me. When I do adb reboot recovery I click on reinstall packages and it takes me to cwm recovery. I then click instal from sd card and click on update.zip says it installed but didn't after reboot.

Hi, I had that problem before, here is what I did to fix my vibrant. take sim, microSD, and battery out of the phone. Connect the microusb and turn on odin. hold down volume+, volume-, and power down. while holding them down put in the battery and it should get to download mode once boot. also odin should detect it.
Hope that work.
I have returned! Unfortunately none of the many volume up/down button techniques were able to get me into download mode, as I must have a hardware locked phone. Fortunately though, I was able to get a ride to Radio Shack, where I spent 27 dollars on a microUSB adapter, a pack of resistors and solder. The adapter and solder I didnt even use. I twisted together 3 100kohm resistors and 1 10kohm resistor (my multitester read 305kohm total, I guess thats the 5% tolerance). I never ended up using the microUSB adapter because when I cracked it open, I couldnt find pins 4 and 5, so I cracked open the samsung USB cable that came with the phone. Plugged it in, tapped the two ends of the resistors awkwardly to what I beleived to be 4 and 5, and it worked! First thing I did was get Eugene on there, put the casing back on the USB cable (which still works!) and then marked that USB port to never be used again. The phone works great now! Thanks to however discovered that 301Kohm trick, you are a life saver.
Thanks all!
Volume Down + Home + Power.
Works for me everytime Best of luck man
Hello.
I got this phone a week ago and since the beginning I had this problem that the phone would not start right away when I press the power button.
It shows a loading circle on the screen and then a grey battery sign and then the phone just goes off.
The battery is full.
The same thing happens all time when I keep pressing the button.
Then after removing the battery and keep trying to turn on the phone, it will turn on randomly.........
It takes alot of time to turn on the phone and its very annoying.
I currently have Nero 3, but I am sure I had this problem on 2.1 stock aswell.
Can someone tell me how to fix this?
Thanks.
EDIT: I just plugged in the USB into the phone and it started charging the phone, and then I pressed the power button and it turned on. But it is not that there is no charge in the phone that is causing the issue, the charge is showing full when the phone was turned on.....
do you only have this issue cutting the phone on when plugged into the usb/power cable?
I only turn my phone on when not plugged in, no issues at all. It is hard when it's plugged in though, I notice I have to hold down the power button a long time.
I just had something like this happen tonight. My phoned started saying usb connected, then the media scanner, then usb connected etc....strange part is...I wasn't plugged into anything. I turned off the phone and it wouldn't turn back on. I got the loading circle twice then nothing. I had to plug it in and turn it on then unplug it for it to boot up right. Seems to be working now, but I want to know what caused it...

reset your phone, see if that changes anything. If not, Root, DL ROM manager and flash nero v3 then enable voodoo =)
Its amazing.
I think adfree is the culprit. Reverted and installed, and it's gone...

I still have the problem, I have rooted, odin back to stock, tried everything and still this is happening.
The only way to turn the phone back on when it is power off, is the insert a usb cable into it, which is connected to the computer and then hold the power button and then it will turn it.
Else, it will just keep showing that circle thing with the battery sign.
Any solution to fix this?
odin back to stock and start all over
I had to send mine in for a replacement. Sounds like everyone I have heard with this problem had to do the same.

I was using my phone last night, when all of a sudden it shut down and started boot looping. The only way I can get it to stop looping is to pull the battery. As soon as I put the battery in, it starts boot looping again. This has made it impossible to get in to either download or recovery mode.
It stays in the Vibrant screen for 4 seconds, then stays on the "OverStock - Smaller, Lighter, Faster" for another 2 seconds.
I've ordered a USB jig in hopes that it will allow me to get into Download mode.
Any tips?
my phone did that but started straight back up when i pulled battery and put it back in, it was well random
got it out of my pocket and my girlfriend pull it out of my hand then it went to vibrant then overstock then vibrant
maybe your power button got stuck so turns straight on when battery goes back in ??
have you tried leaving battery out for awhile then trying again ??
I left the battery out over night. Whenever I put it in, it immediately jumps into the boot loop.
That's a good thought about the power button being stuck. It would certainly behave this way if that was the case. It appears to be fine though. It's still clicking perfectly when I depress it.
You could always try
odin back to stock
1. Start Odin
2. Plug USB cable into pc
3. Power off the Phone.
3. Pull the Battery.
5. Plug USB cable into Phone.
6. Press and Hold: Volume UP + Volume DOWN + Power, all at the same time.
7. Re-insert the battery.
8. The phone will power now, when the screen starts a cycle of going to a BLACK screen, release ONLY the POWER button.
9. When you see the download icon release the volume buttons,
10. Odin back to stock by putting the PIT file into the appropriate area and the .tar in the PDA area.
Or try that same method without holding the power button, just the volume rocker (up and down) when plugging into usb that works for some ppl

I'm unable to get into download mode. Since the phone powers on immediately after inserting the battery, I've tried holding down the volume buttons as I'm inserting the battery, but it just enters the boot loop. I've tried pretty much everything at this point. I'm hoping the jig fixes it.
ok try this
pull out battery
hold volume up and down (if you are using gingerbread bootloaders volume up only)
DONT PUT BATTERy BACK IN INSTEAD PLUG USB
then you should be able to get into download mode

thanks button if helped

Did you have odin up and running?
I was able to get it into download mode. The problem is that it's restarting 3 seconds after it enters DL mode.
I have ODIN up, I'm holding down the Vol+ button and the power button. I insert the battery in the back, the phone boots in to DL but immediately restarts again.
I think I might have to send it in to be JTAG flashed.
i can't stop thinking that button is stuck
In case someone still faces a similar issue. Reboot loop happened to me today. I have a vibrant. I use for work and it was off for about 3 weeks and it entered reboot loop when I tried to charge it and could not get into recovery either. It has cm7. It seems like with cm7 the phone does not enter charge mode until it boots the OS and battery did not have enough charge to boot forcing the loop. Luckily, I have an Epic 4G as my personal phone. Swapped batteries and was able to boot the vibrant. Charged the vibrant battery using the epic and then swapped them again. Don't know if this is your case, but sometimes battery statistics are messed up and phone reports battery has enough charge, but it is almost dry.
Hope this might be of help to somebody.

So earlier today my home application died, so I tried sbfing my phone back to 2.2 (was previously running stock GB). After the SBf, my phone went into bootloop, and I'm pretty sure the battery died while looping. The phone is unresponsive, unless plugged into a power source, which it then shows the green charging light, as if it was charging while powered off. Any help restoring it would be greatly appreciated.
Have you tried to charge it in recovery for a while to get a charge then SBF back to stock?
Take out the battery, insert the battery, hold volume down (until it gives you a menu) and press power(you can release the power button but hold down the volume down until menu appears.
or if that dont work, try removing battery and do the button sequence with a wall charger.
Just rmemeber once you get to recover let it charge or you wont have no juice to do the SBF.
Thanks a lot, that did the trick I realized that I just needed to be plugged into a wall charger, my laptop apparently wasn't giving it enough power.
