[Q] I'm afraid to flash a secure kernel, help me people? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I had soft bricked my phone yesterday. Thank god I recovered finally but I'm stuck with an insecure kernel. Devs, can you guide me what should I do next?
It starts like this:
1. Updated my phone's firmware to KF3 (official) yestreday.
2. Then, Installed an insecure kernel, "GT-I9100_XXKG1_insecure" from this thread:
[KERNEL] Insecure Kernels for use with rooting
3. Rooted my SGS2. Success. (used this tutorial)
4. Now flashed the leaked 2.3.4 firmware from this thread:
Updating to 2.3.4 firmware - if you don't want to root
5. Now I needed to root again since I had just updated my firmware. The boot screen still had that yellow sign so I supposed I'm still on an insecure kernel. So I opened S2 Root and tried to root it but it was stuck in the middle of the process so I cancelled it.
6. Then, I again opened Odin and flashed a secure secure kernel from that same thread.
But instead of using Odin 1.83 as it was mentioned, I used 1.85. I don't think this could do any harm. But Odin failed to flash that kernel and my phone was stuck in a boot loop.
The phone didn't go further the boot screen with a yellow sign at the bottom. I was able to enter the download mode but NOT the recovery mode. So wiping the phone was not an option.
Then I decided to flash that 2.3.4 firmware again and this ****ed up my phone. Odin failed to flash it and my boot screen was then replaced with that infamous screen saying that the FIrmware Upgrade encountered an issue etc.
I thought I've bricked my phone but was finally I was able to recover again by flashing that insecure kernel again.
I think I created a problem in step 5 and 6. But I'm afraid to go and flash a secure kernel again. People help me?

You first flashed the insecure KG1 kernel and then the KG1 (2.3.4) FW ROM?
Wrong order AFAIK, but nothing that could harm your phone.
Try it once more, all over again from step one (this is also how I installed and rooted 2.3.4 KG1 over my (CF rooted) KE2 before CF-Root for KG1 was released):
Go to downloadmode, fire up Odin, connect everything, put the "CODE_I9100XXKG1_CL349526_REV02_user_low_ship.tar" into PDA and the "GT-I9100-CSC-MULTI-OXAKG1.tar" into CSC.
doublecheck nothing else is selected (no repartition, not PIT and all that)
Hit "Start" and watch the show roll....
after the flash, the phone should reboot into recovery, do some stuff and reboot again into the OS - all userdata is wiped during this flash, so IMO no manual wipe via recovery required here
now flash an insecure kernel and apply root using SuperOneClick or similar tools, or perform the the few step required manually via adb (that's what I did) - or simply flash CF-Root for KG1 instead of a plain insecure kernel (I'd suggest CF)
if you want back to stock kernel now (if you have CF, why would you? ) flash the KG1 stock kernel via Odin
This procedure worked perfectely fine for me.
If Odin keep failing to flash in download mode, there might be some connection problem, maybe.
Try reinstalling the USB driver, connecting to a different USB port, not using a USB hub if you previously did....

@OP- Flash with CF's rooted kernel. It's a lot easy and hassle free. Why insecure kernel?

Umm okay, I'm a beginner in rooting so I hope you don't mind if I ask you some help? Do I need to download the KF3 firmware again? I've reached my FUP and it'll take more than a day for me
Is it possible to go ahead somewhere right now? I just want to remove that insecure yellow triangle sign from the boot screen. Any secure kernel to do this job?

@itthehappy I followed what was written in the tutorial. So now when I'm on an insecure kernel, how should I flash with cf?

No, you don't have to redownload any FW if your fine with the one you currently have.

Sure. If your root is working already and you just wanna go back to stock (secure) kernel, you can find the stock kernels for most, if not all, firmwares here:

CF would be best option IMO.
First flash the CF kernel - again watch out it perfectly matches your FW.
On first CF boot it'll install it's CWM app, after that flash the stock/secure kernel to get rid of the triangle.
You can then re-flash the CF kernel with the CWM app without the triangle comming back

I can't find KG1 in that list. Although there is KG1 listed under ZSKG2 but that's for "GT-I9100T".
Should I use the stock kernel given in this thread instead:

This sounds the best option. But one question, before flashing with CF kernel, should I flash with stock kernel or flash CF directly on top of my current insecure kernel?

Should be fine flashing directely over whatever kernel there is at the moment, as it get completely replaced anyways.
Just make sure its the KG1 CF and no Kies crap running in the back while running Odin (use Taskmanager to kill them all).

[Q] Updating to KG5 via kies from 2.3.3 KF2

hello, i recently bought a SGS2 and i was just wondering, if i use kies to update the current XXKF2 kernel to the new KG5 one (also jumps from 2.3.3 to 2.3.4 right?) will this process factory reset my phone? will i get to keep my current layout of apps and cellular operator settings or is it all gone?
oh, i forgot, is there an insecure KG5 kernel yet to root with?
Hi! I really dont know if it will reset the phone but if its just the kernel it should no change it. I would recommend you to do a nandroid backup (google) with clockwork. There should be an insecure kernel, after the backup update it. Then root it go into clockwork - advanced restore and restore ONLY DATA. This should work.
Note: if you need the insecure kernel please tell me the build version i'll provide a link.
Sent from my GT-I9100
Kies does not update a kernel its a full firmware update .
Kies updates do not normally wipe the phone but you should have a backup .
jje
Scratch that, kies is being stupid and wont connect to the server so i cant update this way anymore, but i guess i can still use odin, im just not sure what kernels to use for the update and what kernels to use for the root, there are so many threads about this, im just getting more and more confused lol.
im currently running:
baseband:XXKF2
Kernel:XXKF2
Build:XXKF2
i'd like to update to the latest root-able firmware,
so if you can provide me with the link need i will appreciate it,
from what i gathered i need to flash the updated stock files, then flash the insecure files, the reflash the updated stock to remove the yellow warning sign, i think.
thanks.

Hi! Link to download nearly every version you want: samfirmware.com register, its free. Cilck toolbox (upper right corner) firmware then android. Select galaxy s2 and download the package of your choice. (stock kernel will be in the package too)
I am new user so if you want the rooted kernel links for kg5,... Please pm me

And yes, you're right. Backup, stock firmware flash, restore data, root kernel flash and stock kernel flash.
If you are doing this with odin your data will be wiped so a backup is needed.

[Q] Installing Modified Roms

Hi,
Firstly I will mention I'm a noob. I hgavent installed a modified ROM before, I currently have the latest 2.3.5 KJ2 firmware which I flashed using ODIN.
I want to installed a modified ROM mainly to get a digitial battery display in percent on my notification bar. However it appears all these modified ROMS require flashing through your SD card. The problem is I dont have an SD card. Is there a way to do this through USB only (i.e. Odin)?
Also what ROM and kernel would best suit my simple needs?

save the rom of your choosing on your phones usb storage...there you can flash it easily...so download rom and you will find it if you go in my files then search the folder download and it should be there ready for you in a zip file..
just follow the instructions at the main page of the rom thread that you want to flash and you should be fine..
first though if you are not already make sure you flash a cf root kernel so you get rooted and then go ahead and flash a rom....once you have cf on then you should have cwm were you can flash your rom through there...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
follow the guide in that link (im sure you have done but its late here so sorry) and then will see you have cwm and then flash your rom of your choosing
I'm rooted but I rooted the old way --> flashed an insecure kernel, downloaded this program called S2 root and rooted via USB, then flashed the original kernel back. It appears that by doing it this way, I don't have clockworkmod recovery..
Should I always flash using the way you said?
Ok.. so let me go through the process..
1) Get a CF root Kernel which will allow me to have cwm. Question: Does the kernel version always have to match the 'ROM' version? When I updated to KJ2 I see that under phone info the 'Baseband Version' reads I9100XXKI4. Does baseband mean ROM, i.e. I have KI4 ROM but KJ2 kernel?
2) Flash following instructions from the modified ROM. I can simply store the rom on my phones memory and flash from there. Do I have to do anything after this? e.g. wouldnt I have to flash another kernel from that modified ROM, and in doing so would I lose my root and cwm? How important it for ROMS to match kernels?
Also, when I install the CF root kernel I get the yellow triangle on boot right.. I read the method on your link to remove it but it seems complicated. What is he actually doing to remove the triangle? Is he flashing back the original kernel?
The method he mentioned is the easiest way to flash a custom kernel, without having the yellow triangle.
The kernel doesn't have to match the ROM version. A custom kernel, e.g. like hardcore's speedmod (can be found in the original android section) installs root and CWM automatically.
Flash the custom kernel with Odin. The yellow triangle should appear after that. But CWM should be available and you're rooted now.
Reflash the original Kernel with CWM to remove the yellow triangle.
But wouldn't reflashing the original kernel using cwm defeat the purpose of flashing the custom kernel? Also do I use 'flash an update' or :?'flash a kernel's what's the main difference?

Any stock kernel is flashed through ODIN after rooting to get rid of yellow triangle. Afterwards, to flash any kernel of your choice, use DarkyROM tool.
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.ficeto.darkyrom&hl=en
Just copy the kernel tar file in to your usb storage and you can flash the kernel within phone using darkyrom tool (no need of pc). Also this method won't give you back the yellow triangle again.
And to be safe, it's a wise idea to buy an USB jig to reset your binary counter.
Thanks for your help Droid. Interesting I noticed that I did not get the yellow triangle after flashing siyah kernel over cwm. Original kernel before that was the stock one modified as per crikelos instructions to get the speedmod.. is that normal?
Ohh I don't get the binary counter thing. Why do I need to reset it? And how and why can a USB jig do this? A link would help. Thanks!

Cant flash CF-Root with mobile odin

Hi was looking for some help with an issue.
I am running unbranded ICS 4.0.3 with root access.
IML74K.XWL7
Kernel:: 3.0.15-1900XWL7-CL340913 [email protected] #3
I have some moisture damage so cannot connect via usb to use odin pc.
I'm trying to get CF-Root kernel so I can use CWM to flash RR 2.6.1
I select the tar CF-Root file : CF-Root-SGS2_XW_XEN_LP7-v5.4-CWM5 from "open file" and then select flash firmware, it says its flashing kernel and then resets the phone as if it has worked but the kernel remains the same, it hasnt worked.
What am I doing wrong here? Never had a problem with Mobile Odin before.

You can try flashing a zip file in stock recovery that will give you temporary Cwm. From that you can flash any kernel you want.
And I have no idea where to get that file...

[Q] Need help with rooting [official ICS 4.0.3][UCLE5]

Hello guys, So I'm fairly new to rooting (first android/smartphone/ but good experience with PCs) and was wondering if anyone could help me out. I'm using the ICS 4.0.3 build from kies, with the UCLE5, and build number IML74k.CLE5.
*from reading the stickies I've learned to NOT use ROM manager, galaxys2root.com, and to not use the STOCK ICS method as it has a brickbug ( the ones on forum)
Last night I tried rooting my phone by using Doomlord's guide but it didn't work ( I had unknown sources, and USB debugging on*but my phone was on and not on download mode or anything* )
Then I tried SuperOneClick root and it was just stuck on one of the steps, and the only way to stop it was to end task the program and ADP...any tips on what I'm doing wrong? Sorry for being a nub lol
*please move to Q and Q accidently posted in general section
Just use Odin to flash any ics kernel u want.
so I guess Ill try to flash using step 3. on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1285894 using ODIN3, then install a kernel ( i want to use 3.3d Siyah ) and then flash a custom ROM (like semi_v17) *the guide from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1650948 correct?
I also want to add that after i Root using 2c.) How to root by flashing Entropy512's Return/Unbrick to Stock, Kernel + Rooted System Package with Modem using Odin3 One-Click Downloader (Windows) that method, I boot into 3E recovery and perform data/factory wipe, wipe cache, dalvik and reset extweaks profiles...then install semi_v17 ROM while in recovery mode and done? Just making sure before I do anything with my phone
I know that relying on the sticky posts leaves some confusion because of Gingerbread and ICS versions. The Entropy512 stock plus root is a Gingerbread firmware with stock kernel and root. If you go that route, you then need to install a Gingerbread custom kernel, and then you can flash Semi from ClockworkMod Recovery if that is what you want.
In my opinion, since you are already on UCLE5 stock, the best route would be to flash the UCLE5 stock plus root package that you can download from the development section, and then install a custom ICS kernel. I know you were trying to avoid the Emmc Superbrick Bug, but since you have stock UCLE5 with the stock kernel on the phone now, you already (supposedly) have the Emmc Superbrick Bug present in the stock kernel. All the instructions needed to install a custom kernel are contained in the OP of the UCLE5 stock plus root thread.
If you have additional questions, just ask.

So I flash the build from this [Heimdall][Odin][Stock][Root]UCLE5 Stock ICS with Root..(no need to flash according to thread)
pick one of the the three kernels (prob going with AJ siyad) and install using Odin lite..then ROM? (like Semi v17?) it gets confusing at some parts cause on the Stock ICS + root section is says to wipe before flashing if coming from another base (im guessing since im on the UCLE5 base i dont need too)

[Q] Hopefully fairly simple

I am about to install the international S2 JB ROM, and want root. The solution I have seen so far is the Siyah Kernel (6.0b4/5).
My question is this: If that kernal installs root, will I lose root if I change back to the official kernel that is inside the Firmware download (zImage)? What I might need is the CF-Root kernel, but I can't find it for JB (yet). Is it just a case of waiting for this?
I'm not familiar with ADB but am willing to teach myself, if this would help once I change to the siyah kernel (have looked at the quick root guides here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278) but all the downloads are flagged by both Chrome and Avira if I do decide to continue past the chrome warning)

after installing siyah kernel v6.0b4/5 by flashing the tar file of the same thro ODIN ur phone will be rooted with the latest CWM recovery installed.
if u flash back the original kernel (zimage) again thro ODIN u will not loose ur root but it will be limited in its functionality

Thank you very much for your quick reply. I see now, the recovery seems to be part of/linked to the kernel. But I should still have superuser for use of titanium backup?
The only question I asked is: Do I keep root/busybox/cwm recovery
Lol of course you'll lose root and cwm, common sense. You will be flashing a new ROM package, new everything.
The only way to keep root (doesnt actually keeps, roots while flashing) is mobile odin.
I've found the answer, I do keep root, you were wrong.
