Hello guys, So I'm fairly new to rooting (first android/smartphone/ but good experience with PCs) and was wondering if anyone could help me out. I'm using the ICS 4.0.3 build from kies, with the UCLE5, and build number IML74k.CLE5.
*from reading the stickies I've learned to NOT use ROM manager, galaxys2root.com, and to not use the STOCK ICS method as it has a brickbug ( the ones on forum)
Last night I tried rooting my phone by using Doomlord's guide but it didn't work ( I had unknown sources, and USB debugging on*but my phone was on and not on download mode or anything* )
Then I tried SuperOneClick root and it was just stuck on one of the steps, and the only way to stop it was to end task the program and ADP...any tips on what I'm doing wrong? Sorry for being a nub lol

I know that relying on the sticky posts leaves some confusion because of Gingerbread and ICS versions. The Entropy512 stock plus root is a Gingerbread firmware with stock kernel and root. If you go that route, you then need to install a Gingerbread custom kernel, and then you can flash Semi from ClockworkMod Recovery if that is what you want.
In my opinion, since you are already on UCLE5 stock, the best route would be to flash the UCLE5 stock plus root package that you can download from the development section, and then install a custom ICS kernel. I know you were trying to avoid the Emmc Superbrick Bug, but since you have stock UCLE5 with the stock kernel on the phone now, you already (supposedly) have the Emmc Superbrick Bug present in the stock kernel. All the instructions needed to install a custom kernel are contained in the OP of the UCLE5 stock plus root thread.
If you have additional questions, just ask.

So I flash the build from this [Heimdall][Odin][Stock][Root]UCLE5 Stock ICS with Root..(no need to flash according to thread)
pick one of the the three kernels (prob going with AJ siyad) and install using Odin lite..then ROM? (like Semi v17?) it gets confusing at some parts cause on the Stock ICS + root section is says to wipe before flashing if coming from another base (im guessing since im on the UCLE5 base i dont need too)

Yeah just use mobild odin to flash a kernel and then boot into recovery then wipe then flash semi. I really wish we could update those stickies. They are pretty confusing
One last question...sorry for being a complete noob lmao after I get the kernel, I boot into CWM recovery wipe...and use mobile odin to flash semi?

OK so i got the siyad kernel installed now with the phone stuff wiped (no apps installed yet, not even google account set up) so just put the ROM i want into SD card boot into recovery mode, and install zip from SD card?

Firstly I will mention I'm a noob. I hgavent installed a modified ROM before, I currently have the latest 2.3.5 KJ2 firmware which I flashed using ODIN.
I want to installed a modified ROM mainly to get a digitial battery display in percent on my notification bar. However it appears all these modified ROMS require flashing through your SD card. The problem is I dont have an SD card. Is there a way to do this through USB only (i.e. Odin)?
Also what ROM and kernel would best suit my simple needs?

save the rom of your choosing on your phones usb storage...there you can flash it easily...so download rom and you will find it if you go in my files then search the folder download and it should be there ready for you in a zip file..
just follow the instructions at the main page of the rom thread that you want to flash and you should be fine..
first though if you are not already make sure you flash a cf root kernel so you get rooted and then go ahead and flash a rom....once you have cf on then you should have cwm were you can flash your rom through there...

I'm rooted but I rooted the old way --> flashed an insecure kernel, downloaded this program called S2 root and rooted via USB, then flashed the original kernel back. It appears that by doing it this way, I don't have clockworkmod recovery..

Ok.. so let me go through the process..
1) Get a CF root Kernel which will allow me to have cwm. Question: Does the kernel version always have to match the 'ROM' version? When I updated to KJ2 I see that under phone info the 'Baseband Version' reads I9100XXKI4. Does baseband mean ROM, i.e. I have KI4 ROM but KJ2 kernel?
2) Flash following instructions from the modified ROM. I can simply store the rom on my phones memory and flash from there. Do I have to do anything after this? e.g. wouldnt I have to flash another kernel from that modified ROM, and in doing so would I lose my root and cwm? How important it for ROMS to match kernels?
Also, when I install the CF root kernel I get the yellow triangle on boot right.. I read the method on your link to remove it but it seems complicated. What is he actually doing to remove the triangle? Is he flashing back the original kernel?
The method he mentioned is the easiest way to flash a custom kernel, without having the yellow triangle.
The kernel doesn't have to match the ROM version. A custom kernel, e.g. like hardcore's speedmod (can be found in the original android section) installs root and CWM automatically.
Flash the custom kernel with Odin. The yellow triangle should appear after that. But CWM should be available and you're rooted now.
Reflash the original Kernel with CWM to remove the yellow triangle.
But wouldn't reflashing the original kernel using cwm defeat the purpose of flashing the custom kernel? Also do I use 'flash an update' or :?'flash a kernel's what's the main difference?

Any stock kernel is flashed through ODIN after rooting to get rid of yellow triangle. Afterwards, to flash any kernel of your choice, use DarkyROM tool.

Just copy the kernel tar file in to your usb storage and you can flash the kernel within phone using darkyrom tool (no need of pc). Also this method won't give you back the yellow triangle again.
And to be safe, it's a wise idea to buy an USB jig to reset your binary counter.
Thanks for your help Droid. Interesting I noticed that I did not get the yellow triangle after flashing siyah kernel over cwm. Original kernel before that was the stock one modified as per crikelos instructions to get the speedmod.. is that normal?
Ohh I don't get the binary counter thing. Why do I need to reset it? And how and why can a USB jig do this? A link would help. Thanks!

Yes,, you need to flash a custom kernel.
1. First post your full ROM details
2. Can you confirm that you have ROOT access?
3. If your USB is buggy, you still flash Siyah kernel using mobile Odin, or the temporary CWM recovery. Root access is needed.

1. Stock 4.0.4 from samsung; Kernel version 3.0.15-I9100XWLPT-CL941023
2. 100% have root access. Running Droidwall (which is working) among other things
3. I'm unsure if it's the phone, USB port or drivers which are buggy.
Is it possible to get a definitive procedure to flashing Siyah with mobile Odin? (presuming it's safe to do so). After that, is it safe to just flash the full CM9 ROM with CWM?
The safest way to avoid the emmc bug is to flash a custom kernel. Like siyah or dorimanx. If you have root access, and CWM, you can install one of them. Do you have CWM? well then follow these steps.
-Download a custom kernel. Eg the .ZIP file of the latest version of siyah kernel for S2 from gokhanmoral's site.
-Store it in your internal SD card on your phone.
-Boot into recovery. ( Vol-up + Home + Power button )
-Go to: install zip from SD -> install zip from internal SD
-select the kernel's zip file
-select 'yes'
Let the phone reboot once your done. You should have a custom kernel and no chance of the emmc bug bricking your phone.
The reason I suggest using CWM rather than Odin, is incase you have a faulty usb port, that might pose a problem while installing via Odin.

I have root access but no CWM. When I originally rooted the phone the sole reason was for droidwall.
Is it safe to install CWM and flash a custom kernel as long as I don't do any data wipes?
Can I install a custom kernel and have the phone as is (without noticeable differences) until I flash a custom ROM?
What happens to SuperSU and it's settings when I flash a custom kernel (and will I still have root access)?
Finally, if anything screws up what is the recovery procedure? I don't have a copy of this kernel/firmware as I installed it as an OTA update.

you can download cwm or temporary CWM. Just have a look around for the links.

yeah it is. Even wiping data won't cause problems. Siyah isn't affected by the emmc bug.

yea your phone will still look the same. A custom kernel doesn't change your ROM or data.

You can make a nandroid backup with cwm. That will create an image of the current state of your phone to restore incase necessary. Just make sure u have a custom kernel and follow steps mentioned in the guides on this site and you shouldn't need to worry

I've installed FlashKernel (v2), there was a v1 higher up the page but I'm going to assume that v2 has some bug fixes or other updates (please correct me if I should be using FlashKernel-I9100-v1 rather than v2.
Now, I'm not sure where to go: Should I install CWM or flash straight to Siyah kernel. CWM seems safer since I can do a backup and hopefully have some access if anything goes wrong.
How do I flash CWM with Mobile Odin? Which flash (mode? partition? not sure about terminology here) do I choose (Kernel, ..., etc) and probably importantly: which version of CWM should I be using? I've seen many threads talking about CWM4/5/6. Are they simply updated versions? designed for different kernels/android versions? Flash Siyah kernel straight using mobile Odin. It comes with a permanent CWM recovery too.
Todays almost all kenels are safe
so resure yourself
And be careful, when you flash rom in recoverymod
if. battery is off when flash rom, your device have hard brick
so you must have change your main board

When it comes to choosing the Kernel does it matter if its JB based or ICS because I'm on the stock ICS rom.

You don't have root access, right? Flash a custom kernel with Odin (like Siyah), but make sure it's compatible with your firmware. So if you're flashing Siyah, flash the version (v4 and/or v5 is what I thought) that's meant for ICS, otherwise your phone won't work.

Actually I used another method that allowed me to gain root access, but I'm on stock kernel and rom. I kind of feel safer when flashing a kernel and rom from recovery.
So say I use Siyah ICS for my Stock ICS rom, If I wanted to flash a JB rom like the one leaked from samsung would I need to also flash the Siyah kernel for JB too?
I have I9100T as well and 4.0.4 on it, what do I do? Will Siyah work for me?

Try cf-foot ( kernel ) or try the zip methord ( i forgot the link , search in google ,this is a little bit safer )

Cf root will just root the phone ryt ?? What i want is to have CWM recovery to be able to install custom roms

Cf root will give u root and CWM recovery, so u're be able to install custom rom
1. Download any version of CWM from here
2. Get desired rom (kernel too if you want)
3. Place everything in Externel SDcard
4. Boot into stock recovery (Power+Home+Vol up)
5. Use stock recovery to flash CWM
6. Backup Current stock rom
7. Wipe the usual
8. Flash Custom rom (Or just kernel)
9. Reboot
10. ?? Profit ??
Now you got Custom rom or Kernel + Full stock rom backup (can always get stock rom from sammobile if you lose it)

Thank u for the response. But im a bit scared flash or wipe in temp touch recovery. Because a friend of mine got his s2 super bricked while trying to flash on stock 4.04 kernel. does this emcc bug affect 4.03 stock kernels as well? So can i just flash the latest Siyah Kernel using ODIN ??
Any time you root/flash a Rom theres a chance to brick your phone. What -Grift- said is the easiest and best way to flash a custom Rom in my opinion. Just make a Nandroid backup, delete data and cache, install the zip file from your SD card. I've flashed 4 Roms so far with this phone, all successfully. Currently I'm running Cyanogenmod 7 on my DINC 2. Good luck on whatever method you choose.

Thank you for the info. I know few things about rooting and custom roms. I have flashed so moany roms with my HTC. Im new to samsung and odin. Thats why i wanted to make sure before doing anything stupid.

If you want to go from stock ICS to stock JB you have no need to root.
All you do is simply reboot into download mode (Power on using Volume Up + Home + Power) then flash the JB md5 file via ODIN.
Once you have flashed the file you may find system wont boot into rom (this is normal). Just reboot into download mode and flash latest version of Siyah kernel (.tar file) which will be Siyah v6 beta4 (or above). This will give you cwm recovery, better battery life, root access, SU etc.
Go and have a look at some topics/search etc, All the info you need is already on here and if you try and take some shortcuts you may run into problems or even possibly brick your device so take some time and learn.
PS. Yes the eMMc brick bug is part of stock 4.0.4 kernel so just dont go into stock recovery. You can also brick device by your flash process getting interrupted so make sure you have drivers installed correctly (install kies) and taht you're not running any other programs while flashing and also that you have at least 55% battery.
It's a very good thing you are reading before getting the bad boy you intend to flash.
See the thing about this bug is when you make a back up, wipe things up from the recovery, and flash via oding. Once you do the wipes, you are kinda screwed.
Now, you got a couple of choices here:
1) Your device arrives with 4.0.4 ICS, flash siyah kernel (I'll get you off the hook).
2) Arrives with 4.0.3, you are good to go, no danger.
3) You can try mobile odin, it flashes with its own kernel and, apart from being fast, it's easy.
4) If you get a gingerbread version, you good as well.
That being said, I'd advice you to play with it for a couple of days instead of flashing right away.
Check out some videos, read something about ExynosAbuse (It'll get you rooted with one click) and revolv around the q&a section looking for "not to do list".

the ressurection remix rom i downloaded came as zip file.I can flash it from cwm itself right?
and regarding the kernel im a bit confused between siyah and dorimanx .I know it depends on phone but what would u suggest?ur personal choice
and i need one more help.I need a vanilla jb rom.Not too much bloatware and with less bugs as possible and tweaked for performance and battery.The problem is net speed is very very low...trust me..i cannot try most of them unless i wait for weeks.So if anyone can suggest i can download that alone and do

Hello. I have galaxy S2, and I wanted to install CWM. I installed it (CWM-KitKatCompatible-i9100) with odin with auto reboot unchecked and after that it doesn't boot up. It can go to odin and CWM modes, but the android doesn't launch. I did a recovery to phone storage, but still I cant launch the phone... Can anyone help me?
Flash a compatible kernel to your installed rom via recovery. Or you can flash an insecure kernel via Odin.
Simple cwm flashing won't boot up your phone.

Would you mind explaining how to flash a compatible kernel to my phone via recovery? Also I didn't install any rom just cwm. And where should I get a proper kernel to my android? Sorry for dumb questions, but I'm not experienced enough as you see...

Well, there are 3 kernels which are quite popular here which have their depth range till kitkat roms.. A simple search on xda for them will lead you to the respective threads.
1. Gustavo's
2. Dorimanx
3. Apolo
If you want a KK rom then download a KK compatible kernel mentioned in the op for those threads, put that on external sdcard and boot to recovery. There you can flash the Kernel file. As you don't have a rom on your phone it would be better if you download a rom and gapps package too and flash them. After flashing a kernel, reboot to recovery and then flash rom and gapps.
If it's difficult for you to put those files on sdcard, you can flash a stock rom via Odin, flash a kernel e.g. philz, apolo,hirox via Odin. Search for these keywords here on xda. Once you have a working kernel and rom, you can download a custom rom and gapps, put it on your phone and follow the procedure which I mentioned first.
If my steps are still confusing to you then you require to search for these terminologies here on xda,read and understand them carefully and then proceed.
You didn't mention what OS/Firmware was on your phone before you started.....this is VERY important to know as it will decide what you can / cannot flash.....
Custom kernels are OS version dependent.....some will only work with ICS, others will only work with JB.....some are exclusively for KK.
You need to check this.....

well I couldn't check cause it couldn't boot up, unless there's another way... But whatever I managed to write 4.4.2 Kitkat on my S2 and there's alot missing feature's like, I cant organise my program menu, I cant add many widgets that I had used in my previous android, there are no notes, phone file explorer and other what is irritating... Maybe there's some another pack that I missed when installing or what?
