After rooting my Thunderbolt I'm having the random reboot issue. I've read several threads using google, but none really specify a fix. I haven't done anything to the phone since rooting it, so my radio/rom are still the same. Phone rebooted three times yesterday during casual usage.
Any ideas?
Menu, setting, about phone, baseband version. What's it say on there under baseband version?
Do you know how to use ADB?

Yes. Well, however much one gets familiarized by rooting.
Seems like we found the problem to your reboots. Flash the newest radio.

Be sure your rom supports the radio most new gb bamf and CM7 mr2 version support the radio. Flash rom in recovery then radio. The radio can not be flashed in recovery. Using adb type in adb reboot bootloader and go into fastboot and install it.

Ah, I see. Is this the "MR2" radio? And, is it only the new OTA update that will brick your phone if you flash it over a rooted phone?
I've been looking through roms trying to find the closest thing to what I have now. When I make up my mind I'll flash a new rom and then upgrade the radio.
I'll post my results.
Thank you for your help.
Do you want to froyo (android 2.2) or gingerbread (2.3)? The new radio i linked doesn't brick phones. Its an official radio not a leaked radio which caused the bricks a while back.
Sent from my ThunderBolt using XDA Premium App
I've had trouble deciding. Part of me wants to stick to Froyo because I'm not sure what Gingerbread really does. Are there any glaring differences that make it worth upgrading to GB?
GB offers more eye candy and bragging rights to say you're rocking the latest android OS. Otherwise, no real benefits over froyo. Some ppl say froyo roms have slightly better battery life, but that is debatable.

Bricks are result of user error or hardware. Period. You will not brick from flashing a radio unless you screw it up.

I read somewhere that if you flash the leaked OTA update over a rooted TB it would brick it. Not sure if the page was reliable or if things have changed since then.
Dont flash the whole ota update. Most developers will include the update into there custom rom minus the radio. The latest ota mainly addressed the reboot issue and horrible battery life.

Will do.
I appreciate everyone's input. I will probably flash in the next day or so.
I'll follow up with how things turn out.
Flashed the new BAMF Sense 3.0 RC4.9 last night along with the new radio that was recommended. So far so good. No random reboots although I haven't been in a spot in town where the radio alternates between 3G/4G yet like before. I'll be able to fully test at that point.
Sweet ROM so far!
Thanks to all for the valuable info.

I was told the following:
"If you are running BAMF v1.6.3 and you installed it correctly, you already have the update, it's based on the leaked copy of the Verizon update that's out now."
True?
I was thinking of installing the ROOTED version of the OTA update that just came out a few days ago, but if BAMF v1.6.3 is already the update....what's the point...right?
Also, when I flashed BAMF v1.6.3 I did not flash a radio, so I'm running the stock radio (BAMF v.1.6.3 does NOT include an updated radio). I would like to flash a radio combo, but I am confused on which is the "correct" radio combo.
Is there any consensus yet on which is the correct radio combo?
If you are running the 1.6.3 then you already have the update and no need to flash anything other than the new radio. You don't have to actually use the new radio if you don't want to. There is a thread in the development section with 4 combinations of radios for your enjoyment.

That's what I thought. I read the thread with the 4 combos of radios. Just not sure which combo to choose. Is there a combo that is more preferred than others?
Does anyone know which radio combo the new OTA update is using?

I would give the first one in the list a try and if all is ok, then terrific -- and you'll then be running the latest radio (the OTA).
I was running the 1st combo on the list (latest) and I got nothing but random reboots and intermittent data connections. I flashed the 2nd one down and its has been good so far. Even used GPS status and get a GPS lock quickly now. Running BAMF 1.6.3 as well.
I'm confused on the whole radio issue. what are the benefits of flashing the latest one? and what exactly is a "radio" update. i know it has to do with firmware but aside from that...
So just saw the post on the leak of the new mr2 software and radio. Has anyone had problems with it yet? I want to upgrade the radio and then go to an mr2 room ( i think thunderrom was the only one i could find that had ingegrated it) but i want to make sure it's all good to go first. Also would be nice if someone could post the radio link cuz I already lost it lol. Oh and would it be better to wait for gingerbread release since its supposed to be out by q2 and Im gonna do that anyway or should i do this since it's probably gonna be delayed?
Android Police MR2 leak
I've been running MR2 stock RUU since the leak and have had no issues.
The market app was an older version, but that was it really, no reboots yet!
Yea i flashed this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1115714 when it leaked and flashed almost every gingerbread/sense rom available without any problems so far

Wait Im more confused now... I thought this was a radio that worked for froyo not gingerbread. Is this just a more improved version if the previous gingerbread radio leak?
Alright after reading up some more it appears that this is the latest radio that will work for either gingerbread or froyo is that correct? Because the perfect storm and gingerbamf both use the mr2 radio but there on two different software versions. and unless Im wrong the perfect storm is still froyo
it will work on all gingerbread based roms, but only SOME froyo. I think PlainJane works (double check just in case). I just jumped straight to GB to get this radio

It works on both but only on newer froyo releases released in the past few days or so. There is a thread on the full ruu that explains this. Sorry I'm not at a computer or I'd post a link. I think it was posted by chingy or jcase...

easy answer this radio works with both. however it will not work with the froyo our phones came with or with the recent fail OTA update. It works with the newly leaked OTA update (MR2) which is still froyo but with an updated base. It also works with ALL the Gingerbread ROM's based off the gingerleak.
I've been running since perfect storm 1.5 was released and it runs flawless. for fun i have flashed some of the gingerbread rom's and it works fine except for the usual gingerbread bugs that are still being worked on.
hope this helps
Thanks for the fast replies everyone that helped a ton! One last question should I update my radio or install the new Rom first? I've seen it both ways and also with a flash, battery pull, and then straight to hboot but which is best?

doesn't matter...i find it easier to boot into recovery and flash rom...pull battery and boot in bootloader to flash radio and good to go...
it's just easier that way cuz if you flash radio first you gotta delete PG05IMG to get into recovery (which means pulling sd card and putting into adapter for computer)...or you have to fully boot into your old rom which will no longer work and then boot into recovery from there.
good luck
How can I tell if I successfully installed the new MR2 ruu.
My TB is rooted
Here's what I did: I restored my Stock Rom. I replaced the other(MR1) file with the one that I downloaded from the leak post. I turned off the phone. Held vol - and power. That got me to HBoot, then it asked if I wanted to update. Clicked yes and it did it's thing. Rebooted, wiped data, cache, dalvik. Installed The perfect Storm v1.5. It didn't brick so I think it didn't take.

only a problem with a pre release radio for gingerbread roms. dont fool around with anything you dont know about and youll be fine. i would recommend doing a clockwork backup though

The devs think the bricking issue is related to Hardware, not the software or radios. Read up on it. There are some things you can do to mitigate the risk, but the possibility is still there. You are running Froyo I think (PS 1.5?). MR2 will run that til you are ready to move to GB.
XDA Premium via Gingeritis
been running it since it came out no issues the best leak yet
Ok so i have been out of the ROM loop for a bit, so i figured i would ask questions before trying to do so. I am wanting to run the newest ROMs running the leaked ICS VM base, but everywhere i see, it says to upgrade your firmware? I've looked all over the place and have yet to see the upgradeable firmware i need to do so! Can anyone please clarify this for me or at least point me in the right direction.
You don't need to upgrade anything. I'm on the original firmware and the only thing that was working, but has since stopped was the camera. I also haven't updated the rom since it was released, so that could be the problem. I did run into a problem when I first installed it. Using rm -rf instead of formatting the partitions did not work. It kept boot looping, but changing it back to format worked.

well see my issue now is that i flashed it just fine like i would any other ROM (no FW upgrade) but it sits on the splash screen. this now happens with ALL ICS ROMs. at first they randomly rebooted but now the only ones that work on it are older ROMS (GB, FROYO) but ICS will not boot. i guess i might have to wait until the offical release hits for us

DO NOT FLASH THE VIRGIN MOBILE FIRMWARE / VIRUS!!!!!!!!
As for the bootlooping, if you are hboot 1.5 s-on, then ICS does that unless you use Chad's kernel (which breaks USB and 3d camera). I recommend you get s-off by downgrading to hboot 1.4 or use the wire trick. See my signature or the stickes in the cdma development forum (assuming you are CDMA) for more information.
deadlocked007 said:
Calm down bud. There is no virus but he is correct. Do not update if you have hboot 1.5 if you are s off then fire ahead using the update package from freeza. Then use the mod to convert it to sprint. After that go be flash happy.

I'm not the one who called it a virus - many of the devs who worked tirelessly trying to rid our phones of that firmware coined that one. From what I've read throughout the forums, I would highly recommend against flashing that, even using the mod to convert it to Sprint. Every ICS ROM I have tried (CDMA) has ran fine using Freeza's all in one version 2.17.

Could be only s-on people had issues removing it, but I personally would not risk it. The ics roms all work fine without it if you are s-off. Deadlocked I am genuinely asking (seriously not trying to be argumentative): what benefit you see from using it since afaik, there is none.

Hey everybody,
Since flashing 3.14.605.10 firmware my phone has been pretty hot. Also, the battery life has been absolutely terrible. Should I flash back to an older radio (even though the radios i am using ended up being the ones used in OTA)? And if that is what I should try, is there a link to the next latest radio? I am newly s-off so i assume i just use a PH98IMG file with only the radio.img in it? Not sure what to try so any suggestions would be great!

You already have the latest radios but the heat is most likely a kernel problem I've heard you can fastboot flash the kernel from 3.14.605.7 ruu that should fix it. Some devices are just heaters! Lol which hurts battery life since the phone is wasting energy by heating up. I've personally never had that problem

Try flashing the 3.13 kernel. You can download it from nils' thread, the sense 3.6 one. I was having the same problem, but I flashed that kernel two days ago, so far the heat levels are down and even battery life is better.

I'm planning to hold off an updating to the latest firmware until I flash a ROM that's based on the latest software version. If you're running a ROM with an older base, using the latest firmware could cause compatibility issues, and since downgrading could brick the phone, you'd be stuck. Unless you're experiencing connection problems, I don't think there's much reason to risk it.

If you installed the latest OTA, it's not a good idea to flash to an older version so you can root. You're likely to brick the phone.
Sucks, cause I wanted to flash CM10 once the camera was fixed, but looks like I gotta wait til a workaround is invented.

So just to be clear, ROM's never include firmware (except for maybe official OTA updates)?
According to this, "a phone’s firmware is basically its operating system." So do ROMs depend on a certain "operating system" to function properly? If I have a ROM that was built on an older firmware, does that mean it may not function properly with the newer one? But this won't brick a phone, just maybe make the ROM not function (but you can still flash a different one)?
