While this is bad news for us, how many people are actually going to be able to sit back and not run to the store to purchase this phone the day it is released.
If enough people had the will power to stay away maybe it would send a message to HTC, but I don't think we have that kind of will power. To add to that, I believe the EVO and now the EVO 3d sell extrememly well to people who have no idea what rooting even means and just enjoy the phone for what it is.
I still think we are in the minority when it comes to these things.....So the sales numbers will let HTC know if this has any effect on it but I say the EVO 3d still sells strong.
Won't be for long lol someone will get in and do all sorts of good.

Meh, I've noticed recently that stock seems to perform better than most/all custom ROMs anyway. Perhaps this way I'll spend less time messing around with my phone... As long as I can get partial root to remove bloatware I'll be fine and I'm confident this wont be an issue.
On another note, I think this statement is BS: "It seems HTC has finally caved to what are likely the security demands of wireless carriers with its newest phones, and is locking down its handsets Moto-style..."
It has yet to be confirmed that bootloaders are being locked at the request of carriers. The argument against tethering is invalid because full root is not required to run root access wireless tethering apps. I think this is solely the decision of manufacturers- why they are making this decision, I don't know...

Umm, after news like that, I expct it to be a little uhh echo-y in those forums . Unless someone wants to flex their signed bootloader cracking skills in there.
I am still getting this device day one. If I decide I can't live without full root then I'll return it and wait for something else. Can't lose with Sprint's 30 day satisfaction guarantee.

I agree 100%, but this doesn't change the fact that htc is telling an entire committed of supportive (and vocal) customers to go stick it unnecessarily. While they don't care if they lose my business, I am disappointed in them and will likely end up going with another manufacturer.

So ultimately what does this mean to the layman? Will it just take longer for full root to become available?

If its anything like the droids - you'll eventual have root if theres a exploit but full custom kernels are thrown out the window, so are full custom roms. All you'll have is minor superficial modifications to the official ROM. That means that you'll only taste a new version of Android if HTC/Sprint officially releases it for the 3D. That also means no CM, no MIUI, no ported ROMs.

It's the American fashion to want it now now now... But get real. Everyone knew HTC wasn't unlocking it before release and now you expect a billion dollar corporation to drop everything for a small community of users who actually know what a s-off is and want it...and in 30 days or less... I mean its just not gonna happen even if all 15-30 people crying about it return the phone... HTC don't give a flying fack

This will be a better question to pose 30 days from now... right now we are still in the 30-day window for launch-day purchasers. There is still a frantic effort to unlock this beast and HTC is dealing with the mass of bureaucracy that large companies with partnerships and contracts must deal with.
Obviously the sooner the unlock the better...but the 30-day window is a freebie.

saw it. watch them all here every week. What I thought was funnier was the phone they were using in the Speed social media center(social garage) was the Samsung Epic 4G Touch...least thats what it looked like when R. lol, I've been preparing for this moment for a long time
My ex old lady used to always say she thought I was psychic afterall, or was it psycho.. don't remember
I've been having problems with my OG Evo for like a month now. I didn't know about the charge dock problems even though I'm always here flashing new roms. I was anxiously waiting for the new one and then all of this happened. For a while, I was seriously considering cancelling my order but then I realized that that would be a win for Apple and I could not contribute to their gain. I decided to wait patiently for my phone.
In terms of the patent I think its BS, and this is coming from a software engineer. I don't want to go deep into that discussion but working with code is a whole different ballgame.
In terms of the whole GS3 vs. EvoLTE vs. iPhone5 thing, I think both the GS3 and the EvoLTE are good phones. I don't know much about the iphone5 specs yet. What I can say is that apple products are not that unarguably better overall for them to have so much money and crazy fanboys right now.
The best apple product was the iPod by far. It revolutionized the industry. Everything else from there has come off branding. You can argue about the OG iPhone and iPad being nice too but that feels like a century ago. Like I said, everything else is marketing. Its funny people buying expensive macs just to log in to facebook and serious customers run parallel half of the time to use windows programs.
Right now, we have competition and we have android developers working their a** off to get a small share of the pie and that's why I can't cancel my order. After I read this, I was shocked by how this blind fanaticism is hurting the industry around the world. I don't wanna be a part of that. Like I said, some Apple products are great, but they are not unarguably so ahead of the curve for them to be squashing everyone that easy. My two cents...

Now watching the New cars at Indy, wow they are funny looking. I can't get used to them. They do go fast though, unless of course your car has a Lotus motor in it... those suck. Chevy is dominating! YES!
Sorry HTC but you fail. Lets first start off by saying I was by your side in the beginning. But after awhile you realize how much of a dog the EVO is. Unfortunately most wont realize the magnitude of failure till you own a GS3.
It hurts my fingers typing this cause i was so anti samsung. The root of the failure is Sense and it's resource hogging ways. The broken multitasking is just a cover up from HTC to squeeze some performance out of a already sluggish phone. Just hitting the home button is a nightmare with all the loading it does.
HTC's failure rate has been abysmal, base on what I've seen and heard from Sprints corporate store in Burlington Massachusetts.
Im sure I might get flamed from a few people here, but I just wanted to vent my displeasure with HTC and it saddenings me watching this Titanic sink to the level of nokia.
That being said, those wondering if the grass is greener on the otherside? My answer to that is a big hell yeah.

I agree on the multitasking front, HTC should fix it and stop calling it an "intended feature". At the very least stop reffering to it as multitasking, HTC.
While I don't like Sense, you can't really blame HTC for it. Samsung does the same thing with Touchwiz. What we as customers should demand is either a way to disable these third party resource-hogs or petition them to release pure Android builds for their phones (which I believe HTC did for the Desire).
I doubt the above would happen and I refuse to purchase Samsung phones (based on horrible experiences I've had in the past) so what I am really hoping for is for the next Nexus phone to be build by HTC. Awesome hardware and pure Android software would be pure bliss.

If not for XDA (And others) I wouldn't have stayed EVO.
Never going/considering Nexus until they get 64GB models. No thanks to Matias Duarte's omission of essential expansion.

64? You wont consider a nexus without 64gb... what do you need all that space for? Im wondering because i only use a couple gigs. I have a lot of pictures and some music that take up 90% of the couple gigs i use, i mostly stream my music and all my movies. pictures/videos dont take up much space unless you take pictures and video of everything, and you can always link a box/dropbox account to auto upload the stuff and then delete it from your sd/device. I know games take up some space but idk how much. I work too much and have a family so i dont play anything.

The only thing that can keep me away from the next evo is a lack of sd card slot. Keep that and htc has my loyalty. I can deal with the slow updates, because I love sense, and the build quality.

Might be the first Evo that I don't buy. HTC just isn't the same.

Music, Games, Files & Apps.
I do love the cloud but living in the city / northeast I can't rely on it to carry the weight of my mobile experience everywhere.

The superior build quality of htc is amazing, as well as the sense camera will always keep me loyal to them

+1. If I could get the Note 2 right now somehow without paying $400+ I probably would. Getting kinda bored and the note 2 is gorgeous.

I think this will be my last one. I have had the original evo, evo 3D, and now the lte and have nothing but hardware issues. Mainly with digitizers. But the main reason is the slow updates of operating systems. My next phone will be a Samsung.
I defnately will for one simple reason. If you look at the quality is of my HTC evo 4g and at a phone just coming out ala nexus 4....the evo benchmarks better out the box and that's with sense. My performance is still on par with phones being released 5 months after I bought it. That's pretty good.
BTW...the us version of the HTC J is coming soon . That is what I call and upgrade.

If its build by HTC no way in hell will I ever
cm10ed 3VO
The next one? Probably not, as I will probably still be under contract with this one. The one after that (if there is one) I'll take a close look at. Been very happy with the build quality of my EVOs, less so with Sprint's network. If LTE comes close to the hype I'll be satisified.
No, but only because Sprint's network will likely still hold it back. I miss my EVO, but I don't miss Sprint.

I regret not getting a Galaxy 3 this time around.
You guys are making me stare at my device and question it. Why why why.
As to the question about why someone would need so much storage, for me, nandroid backups are the biggest user of space.
Nexus' are great, and I'm really tiring of HTC bs bootloader shenanigans, but love the look and build quality. I don't like sense, though (though much better than TW) so I use AOKP/CM/PA, etc.
hurled from my AOKP'd Evo LTE. Enjoy.
