I did make a conversion program to convert Cell Tower information to actual locations. You can download the version on SourceForge here..
Contents of the zip:
- Cell2KML.exe: Program which converts the input.txt into output.kml
- cells.txt: cache from www.opencellid.org, but in stripped form and with format: id,mcc, mnc, lac, cellid, lat, lon
- cellsNew.txt: will be appended with found locations via internet service of Google Maps with format id,mcc, mnc, lac, cellid, lat, lon
- input.txt: input file in format: datetime,mcc,mnc,lac,cellid
- output.kml: output file suitable for Google Earth, Google Maps or Google Mobile
Some notes:
- Cell2KML.exe works on PC and on Windows Mobile, but on Windows Mobile it is really slow......and progress information is not yet available on Windows Mobile (only a debug log file)
- When location is not in cells.txt or cellsNew.txt, then internet is used for getting the actual location and the positive result is added to cellsNew.txt
- output.kml can be used immediately in Google Earth (if installed on your PC) and Google Mobile Maps by double clicking on the file
- if you want to use the output.kml in Google Maps, then your kml must be public accessible on the internet. You can use a public folder of DropBox or as in my example on SourceForge, e.g.:
<br>
Code:
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=http://touchlockpro.sourceforge.net/CellTower2KML/battclock.kml
BattClock can now monitor the nearest cell tower with your phone using GSM. Why is this interesting?
- This Cell Tower Info can be used for getting an approximate location using several services (Google, OpenCellId, Celldb, location-api)
- No GPS needed! Works on any Windows Mobile phone supported by BattClock!
- If you have a GPS this is more accurate, but also drains battery.
- No internet access needed on your phone, the monitored data can be translated offline to actual locations on a PC with internet access.
- With that you can keep track of where you have been when or which approximate route you did take.
- With triangulation in combination with Tower Signal Strength even more accurate positioning could be computed.
- If you can map the cellid to a approximate Location (Langitude, Longitude) via an offline database, you even do not need internet access.
The input.txt can you be a battclock.csv file, when you only selected to log to file mcc, mnc, lac, cellid, otherwise you must make sure the columns are in the order datetime, mcc, mnc, lac, cellid. Copy your battclock.csv file in the same directory as the Cell2KML.exe program and name it input.txt.
When you convert this Cell Tower Information to kml format, you can show this on Map applications, like Google Earth, Google Maps or an offline Map application which supports kml.
Example kml file here, which opens in Google Maps.
The following information can be monitored (displayed, logged to BattClock.csv file or to registry):
-Mobile Country Code
-Mobile Network Code
-Location Area Code
-Cell ID
-Tower Signal Strength
-Base Station ID (not filled on my Touch Diamond)
-GPRS Cell ID (not seen filled on my Touch Diamond)
-GPRS Base Station ID (not seen filled on my Touch Diamond)
The following registry values can be filled, below HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ZuinigeRijder\Status, so other programs (e.g. MortScript) can react on it:
- MobileCountryCode
- MobileNetworkCode
- LocationAreaCode
- CellId
- TowerSignalStrength
- BaseStationId
- GPRSCellId
- GPRSBaseStationId
For offline converting the Cell Tower Info, you need to enable at least the logging for the following info:
- Mobile Country Code
- Mobile Network Code
- Location Area Code
- Cell ID
The default check time is once per 30 seconds (if one of the items is enabled). You can set the number of seconds via registry key or via BattConfig: "TowerInfoSeconds".
Note that the monitoring does not occur in a deep sleep. At power on after a deep sleep, the monitoring resumes immediately (without the wait of the configured seconds).
Hi ZuinigeRijder,
Thank you very much for sharing another great app and keeping WinMo alive.
Best regards.
Hi ZuinigeRijder,
+1 for the new little WinMo app from you. Amazing and helpfull. Thank You
Location name on windows mobile?
Hi, would it be possible to use some of the cell feature combined with script or other plugin to display near the operator name or in the taskbar the name (description) of the location where "I am now"? For example if I'm in london to display somewhere "London" (in "nokia style")
Thanks
Andrea

Currently I store the RAW data in BattClock:
YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS,MOBILE_COUNTRY_CODE,MOBILE_NETWORK_CODE,LOCATION_AREA_CODE,CELLID
And transform via a local textfile (based on opencellid) to KML or if the Cell id is not in the local textfile, I use google (internet).
So I still only know the coordinates. Via internet (google maps) you can even get the approx. address via the coordinates.
In principle it would be possible to store all this data locally, and have a lookup of the approx. address or City.
But if you have internet on your mobile, even that could be used as fallback.
The question is if you want to use this functionality with or without internet on your phone
Note that till now, I kept BattClock as simple as possible, but getting this information from a local textfile will be a bit harder (consume more CPU for finding).

Hi, thanks for the answer! My phone is aways connected to internet...
I did put the CellTower2KML documentation also on SourceForge.
For the lazy people here (like me ),
i have written an small Batch Script to convert automatically the log-file generated by Battclock and start Google Earth
1.: You have to "Google Earth" installed on your PC (if not already)
2.: Download and extract ZuinigeRijder´s "CellTower2KML (if not already)
3.: Download, extract and Copy the "Run.bat" into the same folder of CellTower2KML
4.: Place your battclock.csv generated by "BattClock" in the same folder of CellTower2KML (For details what kind of data should/can be logged look at the first Post )
5.: Click on Run.bat
Thats it!
When everything is fine, Google Earth should start and show your Track
Of course for your next Tracks you have to do only Step 4 and 5, no more.

P.S.: Maybe Zuinige is packing this batch inside his CellTower2KML.1.0.zip so its provided from start...

Hi All,
On my Diamond i use Oziexplorer CE for viewing and using landmaps (I think thats the English word, the Dutch word is "stafkaarten." Please correct me if i'm wrong).
I was wondering if there is an app for android that can do the same. I'll be receiving my hero any day now and this is the last app i need to replace.
Many thanks in advance.
If there isn't any, thats allright too. Then at least i can stop searching
Google maps or Route 66
don't know of anything (Google Maps or Route66 or CoPilot or whatever is NO alternative for OziExplorer ).
Did you try asking the authors of OziExplorer if they have an Android build in the back of their heads somewhere?
Maybe this can be interesting?

sounds interestimg, ill try ...
did some tests with ownmap, but the map utility doesnt work and devs are not responding to mail
P.S: Looks promising, however, there are certain challenges with the conversion of ozi files, some segments are distorted and its about 200m away from the actual point ... In ozi, the maps are very precise. Will test and do some research, I'm shure, theres a solution to the 'minor' problems
Well, the month of august in Spain is the "hollidays month" and for this reason it's possible that developers are absents.
I like Oziexplorer and CompeGPS with my Windows Mobile PDA, and I will try change to Android with a new PDA HTC Hero and test this software Oruxmaps in it.
Greetings
OruxMaps
Obviously I did a mistake in converting, a second try lead a to much better calibration. First impression is very good, OruxMaps shows my position and let me record tracks and logfiles, I can set waypoints and follow a route (not tested yet). First wish: a tool to lock the keys and blank the screen to save energy why tracking a hike ... But as said, very promising application
looks very promising indeed. Does anyone know how to convert ozfx3 files to be used in this app??

never tried it, as I have the original files ...
but you might try demapper from terraperfecta
Can't download it from the market. Known issue?
I've created an Android application called Viamici for which you do not need a PC to calibrate a map - you can do it on a phone
New ideas for Ozi or substitute on Android?
Does anybody know about new developements on the problem: Running Ozi on an android-device?
Next wekk I visit the USA and will buy a Nexus One. It would be great if I could go on with all my Ozi-calibrated maps. Thanks for any idea!
"We are currently doing trials and evaluating whether we will develop an Android version." - http://www.oziexplorer3.com/ozice/faq_os.html
Some encouragement from our side would not be bad: [email protected]
Encouraging?
and this was Ozi's answer to my encouragement last week:
"An Android version will not be available for a considerable time."
Ozi Explorer replacement
Hi all,
Some time ago I wrote crossplatform library for reading Ozi Explorer maps
(_ttp://code.google.com/p/swampex/) and Ozi Explorer equivalent for Linux
(_ttp://code.google.com/p/ozex/) - and even used it in offroad competitions.
Moreover, I started project for Android and got a development version.
(_ttp://code.google.com/p/yozi/).
Unfortunately, it was discontinued due to the lack of time, but if someone want to take a part in development - please contact me.
BTW, I'm rare visitor of xda forum, so e-mail will be preferred way.
Best wishes.
yozi: replacement for ozi explorer on android
I've decided to reinvent the wheel and released alpha version of yozi - Ozi Explorer replacement for Android OS.
Features:
- Topographic maps rendering (ozf2/ozfx3 formats)
- Maps automatic load for a current location
- Switching between more/less detailed maps for a currend location
- Movement tracking using internal GPS receiver
- Import waypoints from GPX, KML, WPT files
- Show waypoint on Radar screen
- Shared waypoints database with RMaps2 application
- Worldwide search for places by name using Google's API (requires network access). You can search for a city, street, lake or river and view it's location on your topographic map.
Can be downloaded here (sorry, I'm novice here and can't post direct URLs yet):
_ttp://code.google.com/p/yozi/
Yozi works great!! It reads directly the Ozi maps files used in the Pocket PC/Windows Mobile Oziexplorer. There is no need to convert the files using a Desktop computer. Like the Windows Mobile version YOZI can read ozf2/ozfx3 files. These can be converted from other format using the normal desktop version of OziExplorer.
Congratulations!
I really recommend it to everybody. Easy, simple and clear app:
http://code.google.com/p/yozi/
BTW: Why is it not yet in the Market?

Hope you'll enjoy the app
I recently upgraded to HTC HD2 from a Nokia N95. I use my phone a lot for work when finding exact coordinates, and on the N95 I was able to input GB Ordnance Survey coordinates into a program (UTMData) and it would convert them to at least 10 other grid systems and, most importantly, insert a favourite into Google Maps.
There was also a function where inserting a placemark into Nokia maps would result in the same thing - a place in Google Maps. I realised today I almost can't get by without this functionality so I'm pretty desperate to know if anyone has produced a similar...something...that will replace my old phone?
In summary, I'm looking for a program that can convert OS coords into lat/long or UTM format, and ultimately place them into at least Google Maps(or a KML file), or additionally into OV2/CSV (for CoPilot Live 8 - when the POI functionality is updated), preferably in fewer steps as possible and defenitely WITHOUT the aid of a computer - I just don't carry one with me.
Cheers
I have read about some FPS program that does not require data or any cost and it runs entirely off of downloaded openstreet maps files, does anyoen know what program this is I can no longer find it.
Thank you!!
Mapfactor Navigator 10 Free is a free offline navigation software which uses OpenStreetmaps data files. You need to download the maps on your Windows PC and copy them onto your Touch HD.
URL: navigatorfree.mapfactor.com/en/
Try this: http://navicomputer.com/
The very best offline GPS program I've ever seen is noniGPSPlot which you will find =>here<=.
There you will also find the program MapView. With MapView it is very easy to download kalibrated maps from google, openstreetmap and others. With it you can also download kalibrated satelite fotos and use them like maps in noniGPSPlot.
It is not a car navigation program but it is a GPS program for hikers, sailors, pilots and so on. The programs are free, but because they are so wonderful, I donated to the developer - the first time in my life.

I compared it side by side with TomTom7.
This had more UK postcodes and better POI.
Very impressed.

Is there a way to make the program more intuitive, it took me a while to figure out how to type in tampa then it offers me like 6 different options for tampa, i have no idea what tampa I should use when I'm putting in a place. and the zip code is not recognized either.
Any Ideas?
I) PLEASE HELP,
II) THANK YOU FOR THE PATIENCE OF READING THE POST
This is the first time in my life that I own an Touch Screen Smartphone, which has Android in it.
Please give me some advices (how to install, how to set things up, etc) and suggestions regarding GPS offline software.
Last year, I got LOST IN THE WOODS in a MOUNTANS but I GOT LUCK as I had carrier network and I was able to use google maps on my phone at that time a Sony Ericsson Elm (not a rugged phone, it breaks very easy as is fragile, is not smartphone, is not having android, symbian, bada etc, as is a "java" phone but it has an online google maps and tiny gps reciver).
This saved my life. I got luck as I did find an area with no trees as the trees are "obfuscating" the gps satelite signal, and I got luck because I had an Carrier signal for internet connection.
However, if the scenario repeats and I got in the woods on the mountain again, or when I am driving I need an Navigation Offline GPS software with the maps stored on the external memory card. For getting out from the wood OsmAnd is okay, but is horrible for navigation.
The phone I have is Sony Xperia L, which has a screen of 480 x 854 pixels, 4.3 inches
I wish to install a GPS software which has the following characteristics:
- Maps Stored for Offline use On the microSD card (microSDHC), not in the phone or the internal sdcard memory
- Navigation turn by turn with voice guidance.
- Calculation of the route with no internet connection required
- 3D (bird's-eye view) mapping navigation mode
Till now I have found the following Offline Gps Applications but far now none of them dose not fit, or I don't know how to install and configure them:
1) iGO Primo for Android
2) Sygic
3) CoPilot
4) OsmAnd && OsmAnd+
5) TomTom
6) Google Maps
7) Here Maps (by nokia)
EDIT Added:
8) Navitel
>>> Did I forget something, is there another Offline Gps Software <<<
1) iGO problems on Sony Xperia L, screen resolution. I badly wish this app but it dose't work. On the official iGO site they say something like this "iGO Primo for android is ONLY for the corporate business users, - not for home users like you god dammit "
-If I install iGO Primo for Android, when I rotate the phone from "Portratit" to "Landscape", the app remain in "portratit" and the buttons are not working, If I swich the phone back into "portratit" position the app runs fine again.
-If I put the phone in "landscape" and then start the aplication the iGo Primo for android gives the following error:
" User interface resolution [729x442] is not supported or compatibile skin can not be found. Exiting aplication. "
It dose not matter that I install the application from torrents (multiresolution .apk or optimized for a specific resolution, in my case 854x480 - Xperia L) or the version for israel from the official google play store - " iGo Primo Israel free "
2) Sygic
- I don't know / could not find the settings on how to move the maps on the microSDHC card that I have, or to set up sygic to read the maps from the External Removable Memory
- The version I had, It has poor maps for some of the eastern europe country
3) CoPilot
- It seems that this app is storing the maps inside the phone memory (sdcard0) not in the external memory sdhc microsd card (sdcard1), with no seting to move the maps (like Syginc)
4) OsmAnd
- Is not having "bird view", BUT is able to STORE and "read" the maps from the external memory card
- UNABLE to calculate longer routes (more than 150kms)
- Is it very AWARD and HARD to input a "navigate to this adress", compared to others app
5) TomTom
- I was unable to find a tomtom app in google play store, on torrens, I did find only maps, and not the aplication byitself.
6) GoogleMaps
- It require INTERNET CONNECTION for route calculating
- It has some restriction, as you can save ONLY SOME parts of the map for offline use like a city / county but not all Europe+Uk & Usa
- It is NOT storing the maps on the microSD / external memory card
- I for a non-internet/not-a computer user, the menu of saving a little piece of the map is very well and good hidden (my old father for example)
7) Here maps from Nokia.
- It require am INTERNET connection
- Altrough it has a "saving" option like Google Maps, it dose not storing the map on the EXTERNAL MEMORY
8) Navitel
- As I saw, the maps it is having native (Russia, Moldova, Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria) are very detailed but it has no USA / CANADA maps, how it is possible to convert the open street maps for navitel?

Try Locus. You can download maps for any area you select / any zoom level in the map and can store the offline maps in the external card. The maps can also be downloaded using MOBAC (Mobile Atlas Creator) in the PC in sqlite format and copied to the sd card.

I've had this question for some days now...
If I have wifi off and mobile data off if I use GPS will it "eat" money??
I can't find an exact answer to this answer
Your question is not clear
GPS : it's always free. With that you can acess a position by using satellites
To be used with a car for example, you must have a software like TOMTOM, MAPS, NAVIGATOR, etc ...
With such sofware you will see all roads aroud you BUT the sofware must use the map of the country where you are. 2 possibilities :
- the map is in your phone. In this case, you don't need to have a DATA access has the map will be read locally in your phone
(It's the case with TOMTOM for example)
- the map cannot be recorded in your phone and must be downloaded in real time. Its the case (partially) with Google Maps
In this case you must have a DATA access and this will not be free depending of your phone operator
It exist several GPS application so try to find one which use OpenStreet maps as it's completly free
Hope that will help you
