It looked promising, and then the thread got closed. Honestly not trying to troll, just wondering what happened and if we'll see the kernel again.

Hmm, ok. I think his Evo kernels are up though, no?
The Ziggy kernel was pulled for no release of source and a lack of advanced permission before extraction and posting, per XDA policy. I'd like to point out the value of this policy. Developing Android constitutes an acceptance of the GPL covering Android. To develop and release Android without providing source code is a violation of the GPL. Big deal, right? It is. They are effectively stealing from the community. The GPL is what's allowed them the freedom to develop that code. It doesn't entitle them to own their work on it. Under GPL, it becomes community property. In not releasing source, they are stealing the opportunity from other to do what they have done and stealing the community-owned GPL work that is Android.

Nonetheless, the kernel is GPLv2 and that does require source be freely available, as well as a copy of the licence. Incorporating that kernel in any ROM would render it an illegal work.

The entire thread is, really. When entire threads just disappear, something was obviously very wrong with them. I mean, it's a Ziggy kernel! Who DOESN'T know they're not non-compliant??? I really shouldn't be the one to answer these questions. A moderator should, in my opinion.
Question answered in post 4, thread closed.

I was wondering when we will see some custom kernels, I'm hoping for a stock frequency with ulv voltages kernel?
I cant wait to get some extra battery life out of the Thunderbolt
Are Devs waiting on the kernel source code? and if so are there any work-arounds until its released?
I'm kinda new to XDA, Sorry if this should be posted elsewhere.
I just looked at the general section and I see questions relating to development there, sorry for posting in the wrong section.

Best way to do this would be using the kernel source which we are at the mercy of HTC to provide for us. Also, this belongs in the Thunderbolt General forum not in the Development forum.
I am pretty sure we need the source code for this first.
Also next time you should post this in general

Yea I figured it was a Dev question but I just realized Questions aren't posted in this section
Where are MOD requests posted, for future reference?
Is it in the general section, it just seems like they get lost in the collection of threads?
It would be nice if the dev section had a sub section for request.

You hear that, devs?! YOU'RE ALL ON NOTICE: masInvasion wants a custom kernel, NOW!
Quit sitting around working your nine to fives and feeding your nerdy dogs! You've got code to write!
Nine to five, Very funny...
The thread in the dev section was shut down by the mods for having an external link. Ziggy does not want to maintain a thread of his own on xda since he already maintains his site. So if any of you want to find his kernels, you can google ziggy471.
I have found his kernels to be beasts both for the inc and for the bolt. And have helped him test those for both devices. If anybody wishes to ask questions, feel free to do so on his site. He is very responsive.
Finally, I'm not sure why xda cares so much about external links. Its not as though they share ad revenue with devs who actually drive business to the site with their work!
Sent from my thunderbolt
I also agree, used Ziggy kernels on previous devices and they were great.
Thanks for the info, ill be trying his kernel for the tbolt now
Its dumb that they don't allow externel links...
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
Hold on a second... A lot of devs link to their external sites... This is not unusual... Is this a new rule?
Sent from my Thunderbolt using Tapatalk
I assume it's because his site contains a pseudo-blog. They don't allow that.
If the external site is purely downloads-only it's typically allowed. None of the mods ever had issue with devs hosting files on my site and linking to them.
Not sure why they are enforcing that now but the storm thread was also locked down for a short while.
And you are right, many of the threads have external links. I'm curiously watching which threads they go after and which ones are holy cows.

Been running the 4-6 Kernel on the Virus ROM 3.1 and it rocks
Just to clarify, yes my thread was closed due to external links but that's not the whole story. From what I understood from the moderator all kernels posted on xda has to be complaint to the GPL. I can post links to his kernel only if ziggy provides a link to his source. Will contact ziggy later for this info if possible so I can get my thread open again.

That's my understanding too. XDA is really big on being compliant with GPL. When someone asks for a kernel source and there is no response, 99.9/100 XDA will close the thread.
But if Ziggy is well known then why would they assume he was doing something damaging with his kernels?

It has nothing to do with that. XDA adheres to the GPL, and so should he. He is breaking the license by not posting his source. By the way, check his github. He is not publishing it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=755389
Anyone remember the stink we had over HTC doing the same thing?
I have never fully understood the gpl thing. Can somebody explain what it means in non legal terms? Why isn't it a problem if google does not release their honeycomb source code? I'm confused. Also, does this apply only to kernels or to roms too? And finally are there any carve outs for developer's to create unique code for themselves? Or if I decide to modify something for myself, I have to share it, github etc.
Sent from my thunderbolt
By the way, it was never a thread he started. It was posted by somebody else to start a discussion on xda about his kernels. Ziggy had never really cared to be on xda himself. He did not have a thread on the inc kernels either. And none of us cared, because all knew where to get them.
Sent from my thunderbolt
Then get them there.
Posting them here requires adherence to the GPL.
As mentioned earlier, it was not his thread. We have always gotten them from his site. Somebody else started a discussion thread for the benefit of users. I was surprised on seeing the thread because he found maintaining a thread too much work and xda also is not the correct format.
If the gpl license terms have to be applied always, can we please also ban all miui threads too? Lets not be hypocritical. Miui has never released its source code either yet their threads thrive.

Apache does NOT require you to release your source.

Anyone have any answers on this?
Every one doing open source coding is bound by gpl it means that they have to share the source code.
Also they are using cyanogen stuff and not crediting them.
Sent from my GT-I9100
It means that the android kernel is protected by GPL laws. Which means the source code has to be made available. MIUI breaks these laws and refuses to post the source. So all MIUI roms have to have a custom kernel not made by the MIUI team.
Wow, finally! I always thought it was crazy that all developers were forced to immediately release their source code, while MIUI was worshipped by everyone and nobody said anything about source code. This is definitely a good thing IMHO...
I don't get why the android police are closing all the s2 threads when miui is being discussed in many other forums and threads on XDA? Isn't it ironic that those closing the threads because miui won't be open are themselves limiting free discussion? Fair enough, don't link to the roms, people know where they are if they want them, but surely discussion of said roms should be allowed?

The threads were closed due to breaking XDA rules. Plain and simple.

I would think all you need to do is provide that link and maybe give credit to the original person.. then copy their post into your OP. But they are right, if the site is locked up so people can't even access it, may as well post everything here.. then maybe inform the original author that there are people here who want to help test.
I for one can't really sign up for yet another forum.. just in forums alone I am signed up for prolly over 100.

Hey all,
As some of you have probably noticed by now, we have a new Development section for original works. As explained in the portal article Introducing the Original Development Forums, these forums were found to be very useful in other sections and there has been a lot of requests to add them for more devices.
Please refer to the article for general guidelines on what is and isn't appropriate to post there, and if you have any questions feel free to ask in this thread or to PM any of the moderators about it.
Those using Tapatalk or the XDA app will probably need to refresh the forums list in order to see it. You can do this by going to the base forum view that list all of the different devices and refreshing or by unsubscribing and then resubscribing to this section.
Thank you for addressing our request
Who would I need to bring a list of those original development threads that still remain in the Android Development forum that need to transfer here?
-Neo
EDIT:
The following fall under the guidelines of First for the device/official/or heavily modified original kernel work:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1911297
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2074906

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2071043

It may take some time to sort through everything, but the best way to let us know is to PM one of us.
edit: Unless I'm missing something the MIUI and AOKP threads aren't even GPL compliant?

Ok, this explains a lot. I thought I was going nuts for a sec.
i wish we had a poll asking if we wanted this, iv always been agianst separating dev section, for the same thing, this just alienated and confuses the users.
I tend to agree with siul.
Do you know how much extra work is to have three main folders to check under each device? General / Development (read ROMS that are cool but came from another device) / and Original Development (ROMS that are still based on others work but have been tweaked/setup somewhat uniquely.)
Honest to God, those were my reactions. So I know where siul is coming from...how is MIUI in a different thread than AOKP? If you add a few apps that look different and don't ship with AOKP, is that suddenly original?
Again, not trying to start drama but just my two cents.
EDIT: Just read the whole justification for this. I get it, but still think it's another layer of stuff to sort through.

I don't see how this works then, because none of my roms are based on someone else's work. and if what you say was true, then all aosp roms compiled from chad's git should be placed on the general dev section instead of the "original dev section" since everyone's aosp rom is based on his work(compiling it docent make it your work). And please understand im just trying to make a point here, no trying to be an ass or anything. i just hate the idea of roms being divided by 2 different dev sections. its just prone to confusion.

I don't take your response to that effect in any way and no intent to malice received.

This plainly states that the self compiled roms belong on the Android Development forum so I side with you in that aspect. However, there is no official or maintainer version of CyanogenMod roms or AOKP thread available so unless Chad uploads his build in this forum as he rightfully could, these builds (from what I understand) can and should be posted here.
