I know that the Evo 3D is planned to soon be rooted by AlphaRev. If I take the OTA will I still be able to get S-Off when the root meatod is released?
Take OTA or no?
I wouldn't, I'm still rockin the release day version. I'm sure when rom's are rolling out they will include all the updates and then some.

Alpharev hasn't yet announced which hboots it will work with, but they did say it should work across a number of them. Personally, I would hold off on any OTA until you get full root, just to be safe. It would suck to take the ota and then find out that the method is only for the 1.30 hboot.

Simple answer. No.
If you want to root, NEVER take an OTA. This is rule #1
If you never plan on rooting, you should take the OTA.
I thought I saw somewhere that alparev or unrevoked said that they can s-off all available hboots for the time being

Yes, they did announce that the tool they're developing should work across a bunch of different hboots, however they didn't specify which ones. I like to play things safe, so therefore I still say no OTA's. I am very anti-OTA. Soon enough there will be full root and it won't matter anyways.
Don't worry, the latest OTA (for now) using HBOOT 1.40 has been tested sucessfully.
So this works.
1.13.651.7 is (as I understand it), the latest OTA, and works fine.
Yeah, it's best just to play it safe and never OTA unless it fixes a bug that is absolutely critical. I've never taken one, never will. The phone runs just fine.

Well, there you all have it. Right from the horses mouth. Taking the current OTA is safe. So go ahead and take the OTA if you feel the need to do so.
No OTA's ever!!!!

Is it possible to take a OTA update while rooted? I am still on the stock Rom. And if so, will it unroot me?

Nope I believe that is one of the benefits of s-off

Wrong!
You can take the update, it will unroot you, AND if the new update includes a new HBOOT it will flash over and give you a security warning and/or S-ON.
your best bet is to wait a few hours and someone will make a rooted version of the new ota... but chances are we will have the ota update weeks before it is ever pushed to any non rooted phones... at the moment .6 is stock.. and all the roms are .9 so all I"m waiting on is a new radio update to hopefully fix this wacky 3g signal I get

If it detects you are a lower version then the OTA it will still attempt to upgrade.
Ok. From what I understand, the OTA won't automatically install if I am rooted. Which is good. But if I wanted to I could force the OTA to install?
But from what some people in this thread say, it's not worth it, and I could just get a unrooted version of the OTA from here at some point?
Is that all correct?
I am only interested because I heard there was a big OTA coming on the 16th, and I expect that it will fix a bunch of random stuff on the TB. So I'd like to get it.
I'm pretty sure you need to have stock recovery installed to install the OTA. If using CWM it will not install.
Wow this is interesting...i flashed a new radio yesterday is this the new ota update.
jcase said he thinks the leaked ruu is supposed to be the first OTA.
Been trying to update ota and I can never do it because when the phone shuts itself off and boots up again a blue android with a exclamation point inside a triangle pops up. I let it sit there for hours but nothing. Phone is rooted. Does that have something to do with it not updating?
Might be but do you have a custom recovery like twrp

updates no!
I'm rooted with the stock 2.08 version, the phone updated fine for me.
Yep, tried again and same error. Any advice?
If you are rooted why would you want to update? Did you root with Revolutionary tool? What HBOOT are you on? What Rom are you running?
I don't know why you would want to update if your rooted but I've heard that you need the stock recovery in order to do a firmware update. Could be wrong. Just throwing it out there.
Well I heard the the upgrade had better 4g signals. And yes, I used the revolutionary method. Stock ROM that came with the phone.

Why nit just wait a day it two for the devs to update their ROMs with the current HTC update, or the radio thread? I never understood why people risk loosing root or what ever for a minor maintenance update.

+1. All of the custom roms in the dev section will have all the latest updates. Stop with all that update nonsense.

Oh okay. Well thanks for answering the questions guys. I'm new to the android universe. Came from the blackberry world so it's a bit of a transition. A ****ing fun transition. Thanks again.
Never update rooted devices via ota, NEVER.
Might be a pain in the ass to solve it when it won't boot afterwards
Considering the imminent release of the s-off exploit (tests are already done), I have two important imho questions:
1. Assuming a device already has s-off, if HTC pushes an update with a patch (say, the ICS for example), will it overwrite the s-off, or it will only affect devices that havent used the exploit ?
2. If affecting all phones, then what processes must be firewalled in order to prevent any auto update that may carry the patch? I'm using Droid Wall, which is a free and very effective tool.
Thanks.

Usually devices with s-off are not able to install official updates.
And you can always downgrade the hboot to an older exploitable version. If you were to upgrade.
At least there are ways to so this on other devices.
Sent from my HTC_Amaze_4G using XDA
You cannot downgrade hboot now, so in my understanding, if an HTC patch goes through and bring your phone back to s-on (assuming you already had it s-offed), u wont be able to do it then as well. This is what I want to prevent, cuz I heard HTC patched some previous exploits for other phones, but dont know nothing about how exactly they do that: do they push an automatic update, will it work on already s-off devices or covers only devices that are still s-on, do we have to block certain processes from accessing the net in order to prevent updates? Thats what im asking, just precaution measures against an eventual f up in the future, because I dont think HTC would let go of one of their most expensive phones. So if anyone knows anything about this, issues with other devices, whatever, just share.
The more we know, the better... Cheers.

yeah roughly less than 1% of amaze users i'm sure, and the official updates dont usually correspond to the device being s-off, usually its mandated by the status of the bootloader. hence why a device can be s-off and still be downgraded to receive OTA.
Just instal a custom ics rom, and u wont have to worry about this problem

I downgraded HBOOT and radio in the HTC wildfire s forum
Of the Amaze? Can you share how you did that?
So...
I have the leaked Ruu installed.
New Radio's.
Running Scott's Senseless Rom.
What does this mean for the ICS OTA that "SUPPOSED" to come out today? Will I not be able to do it, will I have to relock before I'm eligible, will I be able to unlock again afterwards...
CAN SOMEBODY SPELL ALL THIS OUT FOR ME AND THE OTHER CONFUSED FOLKS?
It could just be a Rom flash or might need to relock and run a ruu...it depends on what changes and we won't know until the ota is out. And I doubt the ota is coming soon.

I'm 99% sure that those of us on the leak are out of the OTA business. We'll have to wait for either a dev to put together a flashable package, or the OTA's RUU to come out (last time it was out within a couple days).
And just to cause you concern (I'm not, but some people are), if the OTA has a lower HBOOT version, then we won't be able to take the forthcoming RUU either without S-off. Isn't that some piss in your cheerios? But that's not likely to happen... hopefully.

WELL THANKS FOR FREAKING ME THE HELL OUT!!!!! ROFL Ahh well, I can't see me running a stock rom anyway, was just curious about the OTA.
SENSELESS 4 LIFE!!!!!
As the title states, I'm just curious what I need to have done to be ready for the OTA update.
Currently I'm on the ICS leaked firmware, running CleanROM 4.3. Do I need to S-Off?
I would just wait until it gets incorporated into CleanRom after the official version comes out.
——— On Rezound with Tapatalk
I would think you would need to s-off so you could RUU back to gingerbread. Then you could receive an update.
You don't do anything. Let our great devs update their coding based off OTA. It's usually a good idea to not take OTAs right away. Never know what kind of hidden security patches may be included. I would hold off until you hear some news pertaining to what the update provides and if it's safe to flash.

I'm with the original poster. I would like to know if there is step by step instructions on how to unroot my phone if I need to to get the update. Or would just relocking be enough to get it? I'm currently on cleanrom de 1.2. Also, are we supposed to get sense 4.0 or 3.6 with this, or does anybody know?

I agree and wouldn't sweat it at all. Once it becomes official the devs will do what they do and we'll have plenty of options for the upgrade.
to actually answer the question that was asked, the easiest way is to just flash the leaked or stock RUU if that's what you want. you won't lose s-off, and you'll be updated like anyone else. You won't be root, of course, since it's a stock ruu. you'll still be able to flash a non stock rom later, load amon-ra, etc.
there may be a rooted stock rom out there that i don't know about that will do the same for you. i've not dug too heavily into the stock rom scene, since i prefer a rom with a lot of features.

The only thing I would do for now is to S-Off just in case this new update makes it impossible to S-Off after updating the system. As others have said you should wait until after Devs have time to play around with the OTA and incorporate it into ROMs before going ahead and flashing it.
S-off first, then just run the most current official gb ruu and don't unlock it or change recovery until after you have the ota update. I will personally wait for the official ics ruu (probably from football) and then run that and start from scratch.

so i'm on CleanRom 4.3 standard, unlocked and rooted, s-on, stock firmware.
can you get s-off from here?
this root/unlock buisness is cray maybe I need to give up..
I kinda want to be ready for the ICS OTA but I guess I might as well wait for CleanROM to be updated. But then am I going to need s-off at all ever?
what do
Since you didn't do the Leak, You don't need S-OFF. if you don't want it.
Just wait until the Dev releases it and forget about the OTA.
