[Q] Is it recommended to apply the Update to my Evo3D ? - HTC EVO 3D

I received my evo3d 3 weeks ago but i have yet to apply the update. I haven't yet because am not sure if its recommended to apply the update if i want to the root the phone once the Devs find a way or if even the Boot loaders will be released next month. Should i apply it ?

Unless there is some reason you need to update, the general rule of thumb is it's best not to. Just in case some potential exploit gets patched.

Just a quick request for the next root project.

I was satisfied with the stock ROM as is but wanted root access so that I can run certain apps and have control over the system, so I opted to try the root.
Fact is, running the stock ROM with "ADW launcher" and "Auto Task Killer" was an almost perfect running device. Bottom line, everything just worked!
So please... is it possible to have a quick and easy method like you have done already without removing or adding any software (except maybe moxier)?
Maybe we can have that done with the next updated 2.1 coming...
As much as I want custom ROMS, SE did a very good job for their first try. We have to admit that. I am confident 2.1 ill be even better
What are everyones thoughts on that?
hi
just skip step 4 of the root guide if you do not want apps removing , im not even sure why it is in the guide in the first place. it is more 'aftercare' than actual root. it is over complicated guide for little reason, imo we need a root tutorial not a set up the phone to devs preferences tutorial
root on 025 firmware is accomplished after step 2 , step 3 adds part of a newer baseband , step 4 removes apps/keyboard and moves them to SD card as .apk
skip step 4 and use an uninstall program to remove moxier
edit- this is based on the original root guide from sunday evening .

Will doing it that way still have no issues with MMS, Headset and so on?
i never had any problems with either method personally
anyway check the guide thread because a ROOT only method for r2b...20 is out !

The root from sunday was on a firmware release from feb, the recent one is from the release from 2 weeks ago,
some changes are faster/smoother timescape/mediascape
longer batter life!!!
few more bug's fixed. I would suggest doing it all over again
Follow up, I tried the new root method...
All I can say so far is
It's a much better way to go, for sure!

The new update is from feb but the FOTA package updates all the phones files to the R2 Rom which was released two weeks ago so the whole package is smoother and faster generally speaking.

as we all write about it the method changes, there is a new one that's unavailable and there waiting to release it. I think they just want to slow down the amount of releases in so few days.
This shows how fast and efficient the devs work!

Another option is that once they had root working they could release a quick-n-dirty hack and now they're putting together better methods and releases which takes more time.

[Q] Why not use the official update procedure for modded kernels and OS versions?

Hi all!
I bought my GS2 about 3 weeks ago, it had 2.3.4 on it. I didn't root it, I didn't hack anything on it since then.
Two nights ago I installed the official 2.3.6 update from AT&T/Samsung. I was absolutely delighted by how easy and effortless the update was: it downloaded the 20 MB update package over WiFi, it automatically rebooted my phone, it applied the update, automatically rebooted it again, and voila, in about 4-5 minutes I had a new kernel version, a new Android version, and a new baseband version installed and ready to be used on my phone.
Note that I didn't have to root my phone for this and it also preserved all my apps and settings.
So, I have a likely naive question: why don't kernel and OS mods use the same procedure to install themselves? There's obviously a way to update the kernel easily, because it just happened to me 2 nights ago. Same for the OS update. So, why not just "hijack" AT&T's official update procedure for making kernel and OS mod installs as user-friendly as possible? If there are specific technical reasons preventing us from doing so, please, do explain them to me - I am a software engineer, I will understand, although I am an Android n00b.
I'm not 100% sure, but they probably use signed packages, and without the proper key, it won't let you update.
The update files from att are signed. If you can figure out or get your hands on the signature keys you could create any install (including kernels and roms) in an update file that could be installed simply with the stock recovery.

Not to mention making things too easy is a big reason for far more bricks then there should be.
Flashing a custom rom is not ment to be easy as the min you root it you voided your warranty and returning after the fact if you mess up is fraud.

Correct - stock recovery will only flash packages that have been signed by Samsung or AT&T.

Unless your root procedure or use thereof caused the phone or hardware to fail then this statement is not 100% true.
Read up on the Magnusson-Moss Act....of course, the burden is on the consumer to fight it.
To me, a phoned is really a cheap disposable piece of hardware. I prefer to take the risk of damage from use that may void my warranty. To me, having my phone (or car, motorcycle,etc...) work the way I want is more valuable than the peace of mind that a warranty provides.
Back on topic... Flashing a ROM is already pretty damn easy. I've done the entire procedure while sitting at red lights on the way home from work... I wouldn't expect a Dev to jump through the necessary hoops to mimic an OTA update

[Q] Stock Rom

Not necessarily. There are advantages to moving to a custom rom. Look over relevant stickies (at the top of subsections), review the OP of roms, read user feedback, then decide.
I rooted and expected to go to a custom ROM at some point, but as of yet there has been no compelling reason to do so. With some minor tweaks (removal of bloatware, mostly) and the right apps, stock is working just fine for me. I'll wait until we have ICS source and some new ROMs based on it before I go custom.
Only reason to keep a backup is for showing people the before and after.

Actually until the download site problem is completely resolved, it doesn't hurt to root, then make a backup of the stock ROM to keep just in case. If you do need it, then you've got it, and it doesn't take that much space.
Yeah, considering how often download sites go boom nowadays, keeping a local backup is probably a good idea.
Not sure if this question can even be answered yet, but I too am looking to root, but keep the stock ROM. I just got my i777 4 days ago and am wondering, if I root... will that, in any way, change the upgrading process to official ICS (I'm aware I may have to re-root once I update)?
Once you start removing things after root you will probably not be able to get any official updates. This is true of the current GB update available for the i777 (KH7). Removal of bloatware will cause the update to fail.

Going back to stock is a download and Odin away.
Then you can go to the magical Official ICS that will probably not come out anytime soon.
I'm going to wait until the end of march since that is officially when Samsung says they will have it for the galaxy series. Now I know that doesn't mean squat what with carrier delays and all that crap that slows the update process down,
For what it is worth(nothing) an ATT manager told me he heard the 3rd or 4th, but If it's not by the end of "late first quarter" i'll be rooting. Just doesn't feel necessary right now since I just got this phone...by the time I get bored with it hopefully official ICS and corresponding root directions will be out.

Would like to help to find a root exploit for latest Android update

So, I finally got my Transformer Prime TF201 after long waiting.
Sadly I am not able to root it due the latest update from Asus (.21).
Since my tablet is unlocked/virgin, I would like to offer my help finding a new way to gain root.
Since I am new, I am not allowed to post on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1526487, so if somebody could let them know, that would be great.
I have quite a lot of experience with Linux administration/configuration and software development.
So do you have a new exploit?
Do you have a working proof of concept?
If any of the answers are No to above, dont bother, everyone else is in the same boat.
Still waiting for the exploit. If you have found it, I think you can discuss or PM to Mod to post into the DEV forum.

I have a virgin Transformer Prime and wanted to offer my help in the hope it might be helpful. Reading many threads here about it I got the impression that most of the devs do not have anymore an unlocked device.
Clearly I do not want to unlock it right now. But am willing to test/try out experimental stuff.
I read here very recently, by a dev I recall, that since the unlocking tool is available and once unlocked you can get root, you have that option. They continued saying no dev wants to burn an exploit just to have it shut next update. You have to pay to play, meaning sacrifice support from Asus by unlocking.
I tried to find the post and supply a link to reference but failed on my mobile to find it.

This tool was only made to make it easier for everyone to root. I did not come up with the root methods, I just made the tool based on an existing root method. What people need to understand is that, from a dev perspective, with an unlock available it really doesn't make sense for a dev to work on root for this tablet for a few reasons...
1 reason is that Asus seems to be the most frequent updater of any OEM I've ever seen. There is no doubt that they read how we got root and intentionally fix it in the next update or two. This leads to problem number 2... using a root exploit that gets fixed and then becomes known and leads to other OEMs patching and making future devices harder to root.
I understand that people may think "oh well, burn a root exploit, we just want root!" Sorry, devs aren't going to think of it that way when you have an unlocking method. That's just that way it is. Honestly, don't ever expect root on .21 because it may never happen.

And a similar statement prior to that one.
-viperboy- said:
I've said this before but I'm not sure if you'll ever see a root for it because you can unlock. No one wants to work on a solution that is going to get blocked in the next update and burn through an exploit. Unfortunately, you have to pay to play. If you want root right now, you need to unlock the bootloader.

But aren't they android exploits, not Asus? Your comment doesn't make any sense to me. If an exploit is released, it will be for specific version(s) of android. Even if ASUS patches it, the exploit is still IN android. Nothing is 'burned' until Google patches it.
My comment is only based on the quotes provided by someone who I assume knows volumes more than I. That means I know little but try to help, by posting, when I feel I can help.

I suggest we set up a bounty for root. I would donate a bit to the one successful in rooting the latest update. Anybody else in???
Well, I can explain you why I think I NEED root access:
I have a Nokia N9 as mobile phone. It seems only to be able to provide Ad-hoc wifi tethering. Now, as I understand, Ad-hoc tethering got removed from Android 4, and the only way to get is back is by tools which use root access.
Without internet connectivity my Prime is worth only half
But since I only have it a few days, I do not want to void 24 months of warranty just because Google dectates it.
Please proof me wrong if there is another solution. I also tried Bluetooth DUN, but the phone seems only to provide OPP . Also USB networking seems not to be supported by the Prime.
Secondly, I WOULD LIKE to have root because there are many cool and useful tools which need root.
I am a Linux user for many years and feel very confotable in the command line.
Having a Linux device but not having the root privileges over it is just a shame.
I am not demanding for a rooting tool. I am at home in the Linux system, so any cryptic instuctions would be enough for me.
I also would pay for a working tool/instructions!

What?
Update to .21 and try again with that tether... Don't forget to backup su.
I have already the .21 build, else I would have root by now
But I now seem to have successed!
When I use the JoikiSpot on my N9 with no encryption, it seems not to work. The Prime always onlay sais "saved". Now I tried it with WEP128. This is almost a useless encryption, but now the Prime is able to connect to the internet.
So I am very happy right now
As a site note: with an iPhone 4 as tethering device, it works also fine without any encryption.
Not sure if this option can work for you like it does on my LG Revolution, but get WiFi Tether and set the profile to LG Optimus and SoftAP. My (rooted) Revo then acts as an AP, not AdHoc.

The N9 and N950 (which I use) are not Android based, but Maemo/MeeGo. Thats a great Linux based Operating system for tablets/phones. Sadly Nokia and Intel droped it, so it has no future. How ever for me its the right thing, because I now have a Linux based mobile phone with root rights with which I can do almost what ever I want.
Sadly JoikuSpot does not provide many options for tethering settings.
i dont know if the guys over at androidforums can help since they dont have a prime. they rooed our samsung prevails tho and one of them ported cm7 and cm9. im not sure if they are willing to help tho.
I don't know if it would work, but OTA rootkeeper is able to keep root and bring it back after updates : I have a prime rooted after update with it while still locked - for now. Anyway, my point is rootkeeper seems to backup some files and then restore them after the ota update. Would it not be possible to find what these files are and mount a script or instructions for anyone having .21 unrooted prime ? People could simply download OTA Rootkeeper, get those files, put them back in their proper place in the prime's folders and then restore and be done with it.

Q: Do I goto 4.3 ?

I have my note II rooted, and its running 4.1.2
I received the OTA today, and I chose not to download it. Just curious on what folks are doing ?
I dont run any custom rom on my Note II, I just use it for rooting purposes....
if I do want to upgrade to 4.3 what is the suggested path of action ?
I thought I could use wugfresh I guess not though ?

Once you upgrade to 4.3 OTA, your bootloader is locked and root is gone, along with the generally unwelcome addition of Samsung's KNOX technology. No bootloader exploit currently exists. If you upgrade by flashing one of the ROM's here on XDA or the non-OTA update to 4.3 (check the Android Development forum), you get the latest software and keep an unlocked bootloader & root.

I made the same move after my speaker started going on my BIONIC, fortunately for me I made the move to the N2 a few months ago. If you are lucky and someone is able to get the bootloader unlocked on 4.3, you should find this device much easier to work with then using Safestrap and all that other jazz. Odin is sort of like using HOB except I have only had to use it twice and not constantly. Once to unlock the bootloader initially and just recently to update the modem and wifi parameters when I made the move to 4.3
Hopefully someone can help you get set up to use the N2 the way you need it.
