[Q] Is it possible to OTA if only rooted - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So someone help me out.
If i'm rooted and that's it and I never unlocked the bl, can I upgrade OTA without a brick or semi brick? I don't remember the exact steps but I'm pretty sure that I upgraded all the way thru .83 OTA then used rdlite to root.

Yup! Root will not prevent the OTA from installing.

[Q] Unrooted by update...root again or wait for upcoming GB OTA?

I had previously been rooted. I am currently not rooted due to the OTA update. It appears I still have S-off, if I want to root again, do I just follow the same rooting guide entirely or do I start at a certain step?
Should I wait for the possibly upcoming GB OTA update or root now? If I root again now will I need to install a custom ROM to avoid the update being pushed to my phone when it's released?
I am on 1.13.605.7 CL341545 keys.

I wouldn't expect the ota for a couple of months.... We will get the ota before its even released so I'd say to stay rooted
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA Premium App
Thanks for the info. I think I will go ahead and re-root. Should I follow the entire process even though I have "S-Off" or should I start with the exploit step? I'm just not sure if it matters and don't want to screw anything up. All the file checksums match so I'm ready to go with adb.

There is currently no root for .21 update.
But, you can unlock the bootloader and flash a ROM that is already rooted, which will give you root. But that will void your warranty (by unlocking the bootloader).
you can downgrade using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=23872834 but the question is :
after rooting old version, is it possible to upgrade to .21 keeping to root mode ??
yes, you downgrade (I went to .14 because it was the only one I could find) then you root, then you download and install ota rootkeeper from the market. Then you go back up to .21 and believe me this is a complete oversimplification of the process.
DO NOT UNLOCK YOUR BOOTLOADER JUST FOR ROOT
What I want to root on .21, I must say that I am very happy that I did not unlock my boot loader. Last week I had to send my TFP with dock back to Asus as it would never charge the tablet when connected to the dock. Therefore, they quasi upgraded me from a tfp201-pad 0214 to the 0215.

[Q] ¿Can i take an OTA whit S-OFF?

(SOLVED)
Im in stock 4.1.2 whit S-OFF, unlocked bootloader (1.55) and then RELOCKED.
¿Can i take the last OTA?
Im not rooted, and i dont have custom recoverys (i recently flashed a RUU.zip to return to stock, but i could not remove the S-OFF and RELOCKED status because the hboot 1.55).
I have economic (health) problems and I'll really need to sell my phone, but I'm afraid that the new owner will come out error when trying to update.

Yes. You can get OTAs while S-OFF. And assuming you haven't unlocked the bootloader since flashing the RUU, all the system files it verifies should be in place to accept OTAs. However, considering you are currently on 4.1.2, you'll need to run through a progression of OTAs to get up to the latest version, 4.4.2 w/ Sense 6. Might be better to just run the latest RUU to bring it up to 4.4.2 w/ Sense 5.5 then OTA to Sense 6. Be aware that you'll need to be on the AT&T network in order to get the updates OTA. If you're not on AT&T, you'll need to flash the updates manually, in which case you'll need to be S_OFF.
Also, once the phone is S-OFF there is no good reason to change that back to S-ON. There's the potential of bricking the phone by doing so. And even if it doesn't brick, the updates in firmware may make it more difficult to obtain S-OFF again.
Thank you very much.
At the begining i did this:
1- Unlocked bootloader and flashed TWRP.
2- Root
3- Gained S-Off
When i decide to sell it i did this:
1- Removed xposed and root.
2 - Relocked bootloader.
3 - Flashed RUU.zip (4.1.2)
¿What do you mean whit AT&T network? I unlocked the phone vía imei (using it in mexico whit Telcel) and still have the update appearing.
Sorry for my terrible english

First off, since you are S-OFF there is no need to relock the bootloader in order to flash an RUU. It will run just fine with an unlocked bootloader. Also when you flash an RUU, all the partitions get wiped so there is no need to do anything within the ROM such as remove xposed & root prior to flashing. The RUU will set the device essentially in a factory state.
As far as I understand it, the OTAs for carrier specific devices are served up by the carrier. So if the phone has been SIM unlocked and is being used on another network, if you go into Settings>AT&T software update, it will not receive any available OTA update. You will need to flash the update file manually using the information in this thread, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2659374.
Since you are still on 4.1.2, you will need to run one of the recent RUUs in order to manually flash the OTA updates in that thread. The latest RUU available for AT&T devices is KK4.4.2 w/Sense 5.5.
http://androidruu.com/getdownload.p...09_10.26.1718.01L_release_356565_signed_2.exe
Flash that then you can manually flash the OTA update to get Sense 6.
You are the man.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Updating from NC5?

I'm looking to update my mom's phone, I honestly don't remember what I did to it in the past. As far as I can tell it's rooted on NC5, with a lock boot loader (I assume although when booting up I see an unlocked lock with the words "custom" underneath it) and knox is 0x0. Does that mean my bootloader is actually unlocked? and am I following this guide (http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...-to-root-i545vrufnk1-4-4-2-12-1-2014-t2959613) to update to the latest version?
Thanks
You are most likely rooted but for sure your bootloader is still locked. As far as updating, if you don't want to keep root or anything then just odin back to stock and accept an OTA. If you want root then there are other ways to update posted in this forum.

OTA updates after unlocking BL, getting TWRP and root?

Will I be able to update phone with stock update app after steps which I mentioned in the topic (of course being on the stock ROM)? Or will it brick my phone/lose root etc.?
