So I'm beginning the process of developing a ROM, and I decided to ask my fellow MyTouch 4G and Android fans what they would like TN see in a custom ROM that they have yet to see!
Can't wait to hear your ideas!

This might be a stretch from anything a dev will want to go after because of the amount of work involved in it but I've made a few psp themes that functioned like a X-Box 360 before and the look is clean and usable but I'm not sure how much work anyone is willing to put in to make it come alive for these devices.
Menus would be standard obviously but main page functionality would work like an X-Box 360, There are so many different background options and styles you can use with that format.
It's a lot of work, most Roms made are exact build structures of an official release so making this would be completely from scratch.
It's not an easy idea but it would be nice to see something other than I-Phone, Sense and AOSP.

Ok guys, alot of you have been making various requests on my Galaxy S threads, and I have a huge fork in the road I need to navigate. I have two theme routes to take, and if I take one, then the other must be abandoned without looking back, because there is just so much work involved in either one. I honestly wouldn't mind having someone help me with this, taking the other fork where I take the winning one from this poll. I have all the files you need & instructions, etc. I have a very well organized set up when it comes to these themes, and will make the work process as simple as possible
Ok, the two options I am facing revolve around a very minor difference, but impacts two completely different user bases.
First choice, is to make my current themes international, meaning they will have support for azerty, greek, and other languages.
Second choice, is to modify all the current themes I have to work with the voice input version of Swype (2.2.42.xxxxx). I will continue to fulfill requests as best as I can while maintaining a wide variety of usable, manageable, interchangeable (with Swype trail line colors) themes.
I'm not sure what you think, but my vote is on the Second option, mainly because Swype capability coupled with voice input is the perfect keyboard IMHO, but I am asking this because I DO have so much following wanting both, but I can only do one... I am just one guy
I am allowing 5 days for this poll, and the answer at the end of it will determine what I work on. So, let the voting begin!
I vote for the second as well. I think that it'd be a more efficient method. The first choice would still be on the table but that can be something in the future.
I vote second one also.

I also vote for the second!
Sent from Monnie's Vibrant.. oops, force close.
i can see which ones of you voted for what in the poll... that's what it's there for.
lets leave the thread clear of vote choices so a discussion can be had. this might also be a good place for me to find a partner or a few to help me build a huge Swype theme library, and hopefully in the future, implement it in some sort of convenient Android app-type library that we can distribute to the millions and millions and millions of Android users around the world, and possibly make a few bucks while we're at it.
I have been doing this for quite some time in relation to how long Swype has been available for Android users. Once I have established a solid base for Android, I expect to make a leap into other OS versions of the software, and even further extend my reach. I don't see why the most commonly used software on ANY phone shouldn't have the option to use a touch of some of mine or someone else's style with just the click of a button.
edit: unrelated, but I just noticed, I joined the XDA forums within a few days of the Swype official beta's release date for Android... Scary. My initial experiences with XDA were totally ROM and G1 functionality related, but around my 25th post, I started tinkering with Swype. Fate, anyone?
I was thinking of porting HTC Sense ROM to Play... Are you interested?
To do:
* Port ROM
* HTC kernel

Also, I have to update with actual porting progress:
1) Sense 3.0 ROM is HUGE, update.zip size is about 450MB
2) update.zip installation fails when trying to write /system
To assume:
We cannot repartition phone due to S1Boot restrictions, so I quit from Sense 3.0, guess I'll have to switch to 2.1
Mainly because:
* ease of job
* no need to fill up /data
* 450MB means there would be almost no space for other apps
* 450MB would take several hours to upload on my 256kbps up speed (although down is 4Mbit - say thanks to the marketing and profit stuff of my operator)

Yes please blagus, i can test bootloader unlocked and ready to go XD

SAME HERE!!!!!
I will be happy to test it for you
Not to be a spoilsport, but I'd rather like you to keep improving your kernel. We'll never get the real deal of Sense since it's not OS, and it's hard to say it's really superior to other UI's.
Of course, you're entitled to do as you please, and if I can be of help with this project you can count on me.

My opinion exactly, I support the cyanogenmod because it's likely to stay up to date in the future. Also, I don't really care for the sense ui personally.
I was secretly hoping you would be looking into camera support
I'd be happy to help with testing now and then though.

personally i love HTC sense and would love a port for our plays, even if its not a true sense rom
not all of us enjoy the stock feel of cyanogenmod and i personally wouldn't mind if you dropped cyanogen all together in favour of sense although i no that wont happen
just my opinion, you can put the sharp pitch forks down now

Blagus,
While it sounds interesting, I would much prefer you put your time and effort into cracking the bootloaders on locked phones (especially us schmucks that bought R800x's).
Maybe I'm just old school, or burned in the past by MotoBLUR. But I don't see why you'd want to add more bloat to the phone?

Sense is arguable the best UI a third party has developed for android. Its a nice level of polish to the user experience and unifies the look and feel of the OS regardless of what version of android you're using. Obviously there are features added with each iteration of android, and there are features added and removed from the various versions of sense. But at the end of the day, Sense is a very clean and friendly UI that simply streamlines pretty much all aspects of the software.
Unlocking bootloaders is useless if there are no devs/ testers willing to develop custom ROMs, and with no standard for flashing roms yet for the Xperia Play, this seems like an excellent endeavor for someone to undertake.
Cracking bootloaders in general is very VERY difficult, and in general require extreme amount of computer power and time to achieve. I've spent my time attempting to crack the Milestone's bootloader, and I've come to the conclusion that it would take 15million computing years to crack. RSA 1024bit encryption is a tough cookie to crack. Obviously the Xperia Play's bootloader could be much simpler, but without sufficient demand, there's no point.
Would love to see this happen!
The same here
When this gets true ill go buy an play instead of galaxy s2
first i thought to make it here, but file would be too big for regular daily bugfixing uploads. i'll get my hands on phone first and test it there before publishing.

Right now I have been reading up on talk about future integration of a HID profile that would allow for HID devices like keyboards, mice, game controllers ect to connect to android.
I have found a possible source that makes it seem possible to integrate into the roms. If cyanogenmod can integrate this into their rom, why wouldn't it be possible with the current roms.
I for the most part understand what needs to done and what is involved but with no knowledge on how to go about doing it.
Can this be done?....

1. We should probably wait for a solid AOSP ROM before we start worrying about adding in something like Bluetooth profiles.
2. When you don't actually know anything about creating a mod (just repeating what you've said in your post, not trying to be offensive) that you post in the dev section, it really shouldn't go here. I would have suggested General, it's fairly active, and you'll probably get a better response.
3. More than even posting it in general, you'd probably get the most productive response if you PMed a CM maintainer, or tweeted to Toast's Twitter or something more direct.
Ahem,
It appears that I AM a moderator, and i dont care for petty squabbling, i mean, come on guys knock it off.
As this is a possible mod, im moving this thread and cleaning it up.
Please behave guys!

My bad. Have my ****s and grins now and then. Crappy work day that day.
Anyway. It looks like that incorporating a new stack in a sense rom Is pretty darn difficult. Since the hid profile Needed is stripped.
As I understand it a new stack would have to be made and modified. To work with sense.
Where as aosp its already included through Android and thats just ported to work with our phones. But maybe a new Bluetooth stack can be ported to a sense ROM someday.
But keep it open, maybe a skilled dev Can crank it out someday.
I'm going to contact toast or maybe a dev on the cyanogen team and maybe they can educate me a little if this can be done on sense or not

Since this is such a large project it might be worth it to try to get devs together from all the various htc phones. If it could be done it would benefit all of the htc phones. As far as I know there is no advantage to using HTC's bluetooth vs aosp.
My hopes for this thread is to give some insight to our Devs (Which are AWESOME btw) to get a feel for what the community would like to see brought to our device. Other than whats currently available for the Galaxy Note, what are some over your favorate roms from previous devices and what would you like to see ported over?
Roms that I would like to see added would be:
Jelly Bean (Of course)
MIUI (Official)
Gummy
Senseless (Sense UI with most bloat removed but including the One X Camera)
etc.
Feel free to add your thoughts and/or suggestions.
33 views...0 responses...nice. All well
The thing is tough that the developers pretty much make the ROMs for themselves and are nice enough to release then for others. Occasionally they will take request but usually it's what they developed likes

Gotcha, makes sense. I know our Devs are pretty awesome, but when I look at the Dev section all I see is a few of each of AOSP,AOKP, and Hybrids. I really liked the MIUI and would love to see a variety of roms and UIs. Was hoping for people to make suggestions and get involved with that process.
Or.... take the plunge and fulfill your own request... Ionno just a thought
I am looking for or wishing to learn how to make a ROM that is almost completely debloated, removed much of Sense (but I wanna keep the lockscreen as I use the four functions that can be there), themed in a red that matches the Beats logo on the back of the phone and/or the soft keys, tweaks would be amazing (quick settings in the sense of removing/re-ordering, WiFi on/off instead of taking you to WiFi settings, custom carrier & lockscreen captions, clock alignment are the big ones), and a custom kernel that allows it to move quickly yet sip battery as much as possible.
Basically, I guess I am looking for something similar to what Scott's ROMs used to be, but at the same time I wanna incorporate more ICS into it.
If anyone is able to build something like this relatively easily I would love it!! If you wanna try to teach me this stuff let me know. I have always wanted to but haven't been able to find the time to research all the details.
Well I'd say as long as you have some experience with code, you could look at source for some roms and start tweaking things and basically find out how things work. If not, then maybe try just flashing mods onto a deodexed stock rom

Is there any web sites or anything where one can learn basic android development? Just stuff like theming and other small scale things. I would enjoy learning more later on, when I get an experimental phone.

im great with graphical work and know quite a bit of coding. I've been debating on building my own rom for the rezound and trying to be as stable as possible but i myself dont know where to even start. Been doing small tweaks here and there on a few roms and so far ive managed to put together by scraps a black and red theme and ui but can be time consuming...would love to work on a team and push out something with jellybean
