So I've never rooted my Fascinate (SCH-I500) before but I figure it's about time. I would really like to be able to tether and remove some of the bloat. I've also heard that Netflix app doesn't work on the Fascinate unless using Gingerbread.
I'm actually eager to try Gingerbread, but I was wondering if anyone knows which Roms have had the most success with this. If I do this, I'd prefer to use something well tested stable--this is my only phone and my only internet connection for the time being, and I'm not sure how polished a GB Rom would be compared to Froyo.
Also, anyone care to tip me off to what ASOP is?

Yes gingerbread is the only build able to get netflix on. There are 2 choices now when it comes to gingerbread:
1. the leaked EC09 stock verizon build of gingerbread and its debloated/rooted/debinged rom Ultimate GingerBang (or the Community Rom, ComRom). It has been known to fry sd cards but is otherwise pretty nice looking and stable. Ran it with ComRom over it for about a week and was very nice, netflix worked and is pretty cleaned up and simple. I got better signal strength with this gingerbread as well and I guess I was just lucky I didn't get my sd card eaten.
2. the completely source built AOSP roms CyanogenMod7, MIUI, and OMFGB. I've only been running CM7 for a few hours now but its very clean and stable from what I can see. A rooting or rom rookie may want to steer clear as it has been known to be hard to install and has TONS of customizable little tweaks, which may be too much for the casual user. Haven't had any experience with MIUI but I hear its pretty much like CM7 (clean, fast, stable, very customizable) but seems to look like iOS on an iphone. Also haven't had experience with OMFGB but it looks pretty neat and is also very much like CM7.
AOSP is Android Open Source Project, meaning a completely Google build, or at least thats the goal. The purest form of Android, free from carrier bloatware/mods and is supposed to be completely customizable and open-source.
Not trying to hijack but I just installed cm7 and netflix today but after watching something for about a minute it takes me back to the selection screen.
Anyone know what's going on.

I'm computer saavy but not Android. If I follow the steps to root....will the phone be totally cool after the process? I'd like to uninstall some Verizon bloat. Are there some must do's after rooting? Is there a noticeable performance gain after eliminating the bloat?

Rooting is a must; and removing the bloat is great, but installing a custom ROM is better performance wise.
Try a couple ROMs and find what one you like best. I use Liberty because I find it to be the fastest.

Sorry bout the thanks..hit the button by accident. As for rooting, if you follow the directions correctly, you SHOULD be ok" but there's always a chance you can have a problem. That's why the directions state at your own risk. And yes you will notice your phone will run considerably faster once you debloat the Verizon crapware. Also installing roms such as nitros eclipse or Kejars31's liberty will also improve the phones performance. Im using liberty & its pretty quick, but both are great. Hope that helps you out
I haven't used Liberty, so I can't vouch for it. But Eclipse is a great rom to try. The devs remove most bloatware, as well as the Blur skin, unless something is necessary in almost all roms. Both of these things, as well as some performance scripts and other built in modifications make a significant difference. Just be sure you have the correct version of android running before flashing, and just to be on the safe side, be sure to download RSD Lite and the correct SBF for 2.3.3 or 2.3.4 whichever you choose.
If you want a ROM, I'd suggest Molten, fastest I've seen!

I'm currently using Eclipse and the V6 script and let me tell you, it is now the phone it should have been stock. Rooting and flashing ROMs are a must for this device, and as long as you follow directions and are crystal clear on what they tell you to do, there is little to no risk involved. I was in your position when I got my X1, and after I installed the Apex ROM, there was no chance I'd ever use stock again. Good luck my friend!

Make sure you follow all of the directions and read up anytime you have a question. I have learned much and more from all the people around here and their informative posts. It is intimidating at first to root, install recovery then install a ROM but once you've done it it is really awesome.
I want to try Liberty on my rooted X2 but cannot find it anywhere. I've searched, but may have missed it. Can someone point me in the right direction? Thank you in advance for your help.

I am currently stock rooted. And yes removing g bloat will free up some ram and u should notice some difference in performance.
But I recommend freezing before removing since there is a lot of apps that are interdependent on each other so u need to be careful what u remove.
most of the roms on here will remove the junk for u anyways.
Just make a nandroid of stock after u root and install our bootstrap so u can always go back to stock if u would like or need to.
If u r just looking to remove apps like kindle amazon blockbuster etc.. u will be fine. Feel free to ask any questions (u can also private message me if ud like) and ill do my best to help ya out that's what this forum is for

Besides for the debloating/freezing and flashing roms that other posters have mentioned, one of the best things I like about rooting is being able to use an app titled Keyboard Manager. It is only available to root users, but it allows you to set keyboards based on orientation. For example, I use swype in portrait and blur keyboard in landscape.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Its not like you unlock a world of free apps and instantly become a Android Guru, you just get those few things that you wanted before and always said "I really wish I could change that" well its making open source even more open.
Keep reading the xda forums and you will learn alot. I started by using the "one click root," freezing bloat wear, and then started experimenting with Roms to squeeze all the free memory and performance I can out of my x2. Like you I am a computer tech head, but didn't know much about android. The knowledge comes fast though.

that's a tasty little tidbit there, I like swipe but never turned it on because I really only liked it in portrait, hence, I really now do all my typing in landscape.
definitely root your phone. and definitely do what some of the others stated like getting a sbf and using rsd lite. im running eclipse if it means anything. havent tried liberty yet. didnt like alien or atrix port so much.

YES! Rooting is the way to go. I just installed CM7 and absolutely love it. Phone works great - no Verizon bloat and battery life seems good. Phone is extremely fast and stable. I second that statement. I've tried Liberty and Eclipse, and no disrespect to those developers at all, but AOSP is the way to go and CM7 is the first AOSP ROM available for the DX2. I was afraid I made the wrong choice for a phone because I root and flash ROMs on my phones, but CM7 on the DX2 has made me feel much better. Try it! You'll love it!

Help a noob out? I have a virgin DX2 - never rooted - freshly updated to 2.3.5 (was in the soak) - and I'm finally ready to root it and try out a ROM. I've been lurking here for a week or so reading & trying to learn all I can about the process - and I think I'm ready to give it a shot.
Obviously Step 1 is to SBF back to 2.3.4 so I can get rooted, but after that is where I'm running into some indecision. I can't decide if I want to go straight to CM7 from there - or follow the instructions to keep root, SBF back to 2.3.5 and install Eclipse 2.2.
I know both ROMs have their loyal followers and I'm sure either would be a big improvement over stock Blur... and I know it's easy enough to try BOTH of them once I get the hang of all this... but I'd still appreciate some advice about which to try first.
For those of you who've tried both, which do you prefer? What are the pros & cons of each?

Seems to center around Eclipse and CM7 mostly. Eclipse can be a bit more polished in my estimation, mostly due to HDMI, FM radio, less buggy, you know, all the bells and whistles working. For the most part, either way you go you'll be fine.
Currently I have myself and my wife on CM7, we both like it. No real issues to speak of.
I personally perfer CM7RC1 its a solid daily driver very minor issues and I never get bored with it. Here's my overview of both ROMs.
CM7RC1
Pros:
Extremely Smooth.
Lots Of Mods/Tweaks.
Endless Customization.
Gingerbread 2.37
Theme Engine.
Wifi Tethering
Fully AOSP.

I have tried out every x2 rom under the sun and as of right now I think your best bet is cm7. I would recommend running the cm7 mash up script, along with the dual core script, because with both of these the res is flawless.
but of course, I think you should try both of them out because it is personal preference. And if we get cm9 here soon then we will all be happy little cracked out, flashed up, ics'd whores with everything we can dream of for the x2, with some extra feta cheese.

This is a fair evaluation of both ROMs but really it all boils down to personal preference and things like if you need HDMI and stuff like that...I personally never use HDMI or the FM radio...but still liked eclipse and that's what I have on my wife's phone albeit its 2.1...I am sure when CM9 comes out she will like to try it...in short flash them both run them for a week or so and see which one you like and go from there

Just a caution on CM7; I haven't tried the latest release but on the first release the camcorder continuous auto-focus didn't function. It seemed to focus once when you press the shutter button and remain fixed, and sometimes that focus was in error itself. Not a lot of people seem to care about that but my phone has the heavy responsibility of archiving my sons' most important memories for them to look back on when they are older, so I just went back to stock rom. Other than that, CM7 seemed great.
I use CM7RC1 Dual Core Script, Build Prop Mashup, 8 Touch Point Mod, Cron Scheduler, Beats Audio, 3 CDMA Mods. My phone is blazing fast!

In my experience the beats audio hack ruined my sound quality. Also the dual core script......Our 2nd core boots up automatically when there's a demand for more memory. Dragonzkiller even stated this is the dual core script thread. Keeping both on at all times pretty much only drains your battery faster. Only difference I noticed with it was the home screen animations were a little snappier. Wasn't enough change in performance for the lack of battery IMHO. Just a few things if you go the CM7 route. Never tried Eclipse so I can't help you there.

Anyways...Eclipse is literally a hair slower than cm7 but it is worlds more stable. Wifi on Eclipse far better than cm7's. Cm7 has some SU issues but they can be fixed by installing Super SU from the market and getting rid of the normal SU app.
Tethering is easier on cm7 is strong -- heat is something you'll have to worry about. I've tethered on Eclipse through the use of a Market app so a little more work must be done there.
Downside to Eclipse is that you must go to 2.3.5 to use it whereas Cm7 is 2.3.4. Battery life on Eclipse is better for me. I've had serious computer trouble this past month and have had to do some research for papers on my phone! With the brightness on full, Gmusic/Pandora/power amp going and internet on my battery would last ~6-9 hours.
I should also mention that I have the Second Core Script going and my battery life took a very small. Not backbreaking but noticeable.
Not going to lie ; your phone will heat up slightly more regardless of the rom you're on when you use the script
Personally I enjoy Eclipse much more than cm7. Blue is my favorite color

Hmm haven't ran into any sound issues yet. As far as the dual core script I understand the core will activate on demand. The thing is this only happens when the CPU becomes so over tasked by processes it create a short lag before kicking in. This script makes that laggy transition disappear. I would only recommend this script for people with the extended battery like me tho.

Obviously, lol... no "lag" or time needed to boot because its already always on...
Did you use the script editor in ROM toolbox to apply it, sealedfate? If so do you check apply on boot, or do you only use it when you see fit?

If you have a X2 now I would say you have to try them both. Run one for a couple of weeks do a nano back up and then try the other for a couple of weeks. Then you can decide which you like better. Or you can do like I did and just keep going back and forth every few weeks because you love them both
I have the script in system/ect/init.d so it applies on boot. Helps a hell of a lot with 3D games.

Actually, like I said in my first post, I'm been doing nothing but searching and reading on here for the past week or so. Eclipse 2.2 just dropped a week ago, so I was looking for fresh opinions from people who had tried CM7 and that version specifically.
I appreciate all the helpful comments from everyone though. I think I'll do like a few of you suggested and try them both eventually... starting with CM7.
Hopefully we can all add CM9 to the list of ROMs to try very soon!

Yep! I've been following his Twitter feed and the "CM9DX2 anticipation" thread on here. Can't wait to see how it goes. Sounds like he's REAL close!
Success! Following Moon Shadow's instructions to the letter, I successfully SBF'd back to 2.3.4, rooted, and installed CM7 without any problems whatsoever. CM7 is up and running! Just need to get my apps reinstalled and I'll be good to go. Man... you guys weren't kidding. The phone is SOOOO much faster/smoother now, it's not even funny. Should have done this a long time ago.

OK, it appears that I spoke too soon. I realized soon after that the Google apps did not get loaded on my phone (Gmail, Maps, Nav, YouTube, etc.), but some of the other apps in that same ZIP file DID get installed (Talk). Also, my old background pic was still on the phone.
I was able to download/install the missing Google apps without any problem and they all work perfectly (including Nav from the car dock) - and everything else has been running flawlessly. The phone is very fast & smooth... no bugs... not a single force close or reboot yet after fairly heavy use for the last couple of days.
So... obviously something didn't go perfectly with my install, but as far as I can tell, everything is fine with the phone. How can I tell if I'm missing anything else? Should I just keep what I have or SBF back to 2.3.4 and start over again? I'm perfectly happy with it right now - but maybe I don't know what I'm missing.

Not sure how anyone might be able to tell you what you might be missing on your phone. It is pretty basic what you get, not a lot of bells and whistles put in by default.
Not aware of a comprehensive list of what you should have exactly.

As much as I love reading through threads on XDA, I just dont have much time reading every Dev thread here. I will be getting an Atrix in the coming days to replace my Dell Streak. The reason why I cannot read through all the thread is because Ive been on and off with like 4 different droids and just cant waste so much time reading through all the threads, Ive already burnt all the time I had to waste.
So If anyone could just give the name of the ROM which they think is the most stable at this moment, I would be very greatful. As I need a stable ROM to fall back on when I try all the new ones coming out.

Atrix allows you to dock the phone to a lapdock which transform it into something like a netbook.
the lapdock has a 11.6" screen, keyboard, 2 USB ports and doubles as an extended battery.
Google for pictures/videos and more details.

It's working great for me. I mean, I have little requirements. Facebook, Twitter, Browser, XDA app, camera (not video), wifi, 3g.. they're all working great for me. It's stable for my needs. You can give it a try. If you don't like it, you can always use Neutrino
Just remember that not all apps would work. Chrome, for example, is forever crashing on the Atrix due to the lag of hardware acceleration.

Using Neutrino here. Really great performance-wise. I gave up CM9´s roms ATM because i need a fully functional camera and even though the situation got better now, it still buggy. Neutrino is my daily driver though.

I flashed CM7 to my Atrix 4G earlier this week and it is stable. I spent many hours reconfiguring and testing after the change to ensure the phone will be stable for work. I think it will be and do not plan to make any more major changes until the end of the year unless something catastrophic happens.
The phone has not crashed and boots 5x faster than stock (30s - 35s from button down). Bluetooth connects within one or two seconds compared to 5s - 10s before. Wifi performance has remained unchanged, sometime up to 30s to fix but I have only tried on my old, home router. GPS lock is 10s - 15s indoors, maybe a slight performance increase. Camera loads quick. No hesitation when typing (after the last upgrade I was seeing a lot of that).

No, Neutrino is CM7 based and webtop does not exist on any such roms (or any ICS roms).
Furthermore , the old Webtop is likely to become permanently dead. We will have to figure out how to use the tablet mode based webtop in the future.

"Best" is subjective. The most popular Blur-based ROM still seems to be NottachTrix; unfortunately, the latest version (1.3.1) is also the last version, as Nottach no longer supports it (he no longer owns an Atrix). There are a few other Blur-based ROMs that seem to still be in active development, but I haven't really been following them (I use CM7.2).
I just got one of those 20$ lapdocks from Radioshack and was wondering what are the best ROMs with webtop? Right now I'm using Jokersax' CM9 (but considering switching to epinter's CM10) and just doing HDMI mirroring. I'd prefer to stick with my current ROM if there is some kind of webtop like thing or maybe Ubuntu or Debian that I can install on it. I have an 8GB microSD card and 5 gigs of internal storage left so space is not an issue.

You have to install a Gingerbread Blur ROM to have Webtop. Not compatible with any CM.
Only a tablet UI mod (not Ubuntu) with CM10 here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1876790
Personnaly I have Nottachtrix 1.3.1 with WebTopMod, running a full Squeeze up-to-date Debian.
I tested Ubuntop, but the Jaunty Ubuntu is too old and support end since october 2010...

Also, how is your phone's performance on Nottachtrix? What kind of Quadrant scores does it get?

I have 1GHz Faux kernel 026b, so the results are not the best, I prefer longer battery than high performance.
Results are: Total: 2494. CPU: 2748, Mem: 2689, IO: 4605, 2D: 265, 3D: 2162
(Result is 2819 with 1.3GHz Faux kernel)

define "full".
There is a "way" to run a full distro, but you'll be VNCing into it, since the terminal doesn't support a graphical output., anyways, it works alright, video is wonky though, so I wouldn't recommend that, but even openoffice works.

HI, this post is a bit old now so im sure things have changed a bit, im hoping to get my atrix rooted this week(by my cousin) and want the right rom put on it, im a complete noob and all the threads that ive read about with the lapdock, talk about changing things.
In your experience which rom just works, Id like to be able to use maps, camera and video camera aswell as lapdock.
Any advice is appreciated as ive got headache with trying to read up on all this.

I see that the last post to this thread (before mine) is dated 3 years ago and the questions in it went unanswered, so I am doubtful that my question(s) will be seen or answered as well, but here goes.
This is my first post to these forums, so keep that in mind if I make any mistakes, or break any rules. I own 3 Motorola Atrix 4G phones in various states of working, plus the Lapdock, which is IMO brilliant and the main reason for me searching out this phone and buying 2 replacement phones after my first Atrix 4G LCD screen stopped working. In fact, I bought the Lapdock to use with my Raspberry Pi first, then decided I wanted the cell phone to use with the Lapdock. I still like the Atrix 4G, even though it replaced my iPhone (3S I think), which I lost (or it was stolen). My question(s) is/are the same as the OP and title of this thread, now that it is Sept. of 2015, what is the best ROM version and what is the latest version of Android I can use on my Atrix 4G, while still being able to use the Lapdock? I don't care if it means using the Webtop application, or a different Linux for ARM/Android desktop, but I don't want to lose any functionality of the stock cell phone. In fact, I want as much functionality as possible, so on occasions when I need to use the phone and lapdock combination as a temporary replacement for a full computer, I can do so, with reasonable limitations. The main functions I need/want in my Atrix 4G cell phone are: calling (obviously), GPS navigation, calendar, contacts, calculator, camera, taking notes for reminders, and searching the web for locations of things I need to buy, or places I need to go occasionally. I prefer Firefox as my web browser of choice, but can do with any good browser, if Firefox is not available with the best ROM & Android version choice for the Atrix 4G & lapdock combination.
I hope that some members here are still using the Atrix 4G, even though it is an old phone now, and they can give me their recommendations. I bought all 3 of my Atrix 4G phones unlocked and have zero experience at modifying or replacing ROM images on cell phones, but I am willing to learn how to do it, after I know what I will be aiming for with some recommendations. I also have almost zero experience with using Linux, but have checked it out a few times over the last 15+/- years.

Since I am new to all of this, can you give me more info on what the "leak version" is and where I can find it? I don't want to assume I can figure out what you mean by "leak version", and end up with results that don't work, or take a chance of bricking my phone.
Is this "leak version" using the Webtop, or some other desktop GUI for when the phone is plugged into the Lapdock? I have no preference to keeping or replacing the Webtop with something else, so long as it "just works", and provides the same functionality, including all features on the phone working (like the finger print reader, sound, camera, etc.).
Also, what steps are needed to install it (if you can just provide me with some links to where I can find the specific information I need to read, I can figure it out for myself, but listing the specific steps you took to install the "leak version" on your Atrix 4G would be really helpful, plus if there is anything needed before, during, or after you install the "leak version" to make it all just WORK).
For example: To install the "leak version" you need to install X number of things on your Atrix 4G, asdfg + hjkl; + zxcvb in the order listed in the step-by-step instructions below.
Step 1: Backup your existing cell phone system, data and contacts using ???
Step 2: Wipe the system using ???
Step 3: Go here (link) and download file/app/utility/etc. abc.xyz
Step 4: Unzip and run, or install app/utility, or ???, on your cell phone/computer to transfer to your cell phone.
Step 5: Using a shell window, enter the following commands [email protected]#$%^&
Step 6: Repeat Steps 3 through 5 for file/app/utility/etc. 2 and 3, which you can find here (link) and here (link).
Step 7: Get on your knees and pray while rebooting your cell phone to see if it all worked
Like I wrote earlier, I have no idea what I need to do, but do have some common sense and can follow clearly written directions, if the person providing them to me does not assume that I know some part of the process and they leave out something they think is obvious and generally known to all cell phone hackers (which I am not to be considered in any shape, way, or fashion).
