...how can I guarantee to the buyer that it has a clean ESN?
From what I understand, a SIM is required to activate it, and since my SIM is now deactivated, would the buyer just have to go to a VZW for a new SIM in order to do any kind of activation? Or can they call up customer service right on the spot and give them the ESN to check?
I'm just trying to figure out in advance how to deal with any questions like this.
Thanks in advance
there is an ESN # on the phone itself behind the battery. Just have the potential buyer meet you at a local verizon store and they can verify it for you there.
also, you want to keep the sim card as its programmed for you and they will not re-program it. if you leave in the sim, verizon will just dispose of it and program a new one for the buyer. also, they will not charge for the new sim.
they will put in the new sim and register the phone for the new person for free.
You can get the imei number from under the battery or off the outside of the box. If you give the number to the potential buyer, he can call Verizon or check on their website to insure it's clean.
You could also send the buyer your IMEI and THIS link and it will tell them whether the phone has been blocked or not. I know it says Australia but when I checked my phones they all came up clean. Its worth a shot.
I can confirm that as long as the buyer has the ESN, they can call verizon to see if it's clean or not. You dont have to actually go into the store.
I bought a phone off CL once. I had the seller text me the hex number and i was able to call verizon and check the status. For some reason they asked for the hex number and not the imei number.

Excellent, thanks for the feedback guys

I know there are a lot of threads and tutorials on how to do this, but my question is who is currently using a Sprint Touch pro with verizon and how are you doing it? I read that verizon blocked the way that everyone used to do it with *228 option 3, and I wanted to know if there was an alternate way of doing it before I go and buy one.
I am right now, got mine in while the loophole was still open. There is a way to have the esn added by calling cust service but it may take numerous calls to find someone who knows how to add the esn into the system. I am thinking of selling mine. I wonder if it has been on the account once if it will be able to be activated like normal since it was in the system once? I may toy with this and reactivate my vogue then try to reactivate my tp. Might be a plus for a selling point if i can...
No it wont reactivate, if you used the loophole and switch devices it will not reactivate.
Trust me I did this and had to do an ESN repair to get it working again.
I have been looking at the specs for the alltel TP and it seems that they are really similar to Sprints, and if it is known that a sprint TP will not work with verizon anymore i will just get the Alltel one. since verizon bought them it should be easier to add the Alltel one than the sprint one, they might not like it and try saying they can't but I am sure I can get them to do it. thanks for all your help.
RE: Alltel TP on VZW
No Dice on the Alltel Touch Pro on the VZW network! At least for me.
I think the sprint touch pro will work on vzw. The main thing is to setup the phone first and then some how get them to add the esn. That is what i had to do to get alltel to add my sprint touch pro.
you just need to quote the CSA to them that states that you can use any CDMA compatable phone here is the quote from their CSA "Your wireless phone is any device you use to receive our wireless voice or data service. It must comply with Federal Communications Commission regulations and be compatible with our network and your Plan. Whether you buy your wireless phone from us or someone else is entirely your choice. At times we may change your wireless phone's software, applications or programming remotely and without notice. This could affect data you've stored on, the way you've programmed or the way you use your wireless phone. If you purchased a wireless phone (other than a "global phone") from Verizon Wireless for use with a plan with a minimum term and want to reprogram your phone for use with another wireless carrier network, the default service programming code is set to "000000" or "123456." Verizon Wireless in no way guarantees that your Verizon Wireless phone will be capable of being reprogrammed for use with another wireless carrier network after the service programming code is entered, or that another wireless carrier will accept your device for use on its network" this is the post that I found. http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=75164&page=2
I work for verizon and they have this 'come one come all' but it only depends on the person you get as a CSR. There is a request form where you can fill out the phone make, model, and ESN and email/fax it into the people that actually do it for you. I've performed the request without fail. If I can remember to get the request form, I'll post it here as soon as I can.
if you know how to get the esn added, i would love to find out. i went round and round with verizon customer service, sales, tech support and store reps about trying to get a sprint mogul setup for my girlfriend. everyone kept telling me it couldnt be done or they dont do that. found the entry in their websites faq that states they do before anyone would listen to me. was finally told i had to send the phone to their development evaluation center before they could activate it, and that it would take three weeks! so if you have an easier way, please, enlighten me! ps..didnt mean to jack the thread

all they will do is change the settings to be compatible with their network, nothing that you can't do yourself. here is some info about how to do it yourself.

can someone add my esn or point me in right direction?
please i have had this phone for weeks and havent got any where
I just bought a evo 3d phone off of craigslist...biggest mistake ever. I bought it from this guy while at the sprint store. Once the lady verified it could be activated, I paid the guy and he bounced. The phone was activated, i went home and called someone. that person said I had the wrong phone number, and I checked my about phone and it has some phone number from a different state!
The phone functions and everything but I think it's working on some other guy's phone plan! I've tried talking to sprint and they have me listed as having an evo 4g with the correct MEID and everything. I worked with technical support on this issue and even did a factory reset, at which point the representative said that it must be a flashed or rooted phone and so they no longer can help me.
The thing is, this guy with teh phone number is in califand of course, when I ornia and I'm in maryland. He had his phone operational as recently as a few hours ago according to his friends (who i've contacted) so something happened recently that caused this phone to default back to this phone number some how. I've gone through and changed teh MDN and MSID number (per the sprint reps instructions) and when I do that I'm simply unable to make a phone call anywhere. When I do change my phone number to my correct number, I still have access to data but not to phone. and when i did the factory reset and went back to this cali dude's phone number i can now make phone calls...with his number...
What is going on? what else should i check/what to do? I thought when buying off of craigslist it was enough to make sure you can activate it...apparently not...

Sounds like either the phones is still activated under his account which this can happen.
Or the ESN is cloned I doubt it but you never know.
sounds like maybe the esn is cloned. it explains how i have the phone number of a guy in california magically all of a sudden... anything i can do about this? i dont think so...

That's why alot of folks flag the people who are trying to clone phones on xda some folks try to clone the evo 3d to work on boost mobile or other places.
It's also illegal to clone the ESN. If sprint activated it on your account and the number still pops up then it's cloned from what I have read and understand.
That's what sucks when people clone stuff messes up phones and then they rip folks off.
I would talk to sprint and see why it keeps doing that they may swap it out if you have TEP or if it's cloned they may look into it and call the owner.
I always buy my phones on EBAY due to buyer protection. If someone shafts you you will get your money back along with ebay steppin in to deal with the issue..
Did you have the Sprint employee activate the line? If they checked the ESN of the phone, they would have seen another line attached to it.
Does the hex and Dec in the about phone section match the physical numbers under the battery?
Let me know and I can maybe do further research on it...

And there is "no way" to determine if a phone is rooted according to Sprint.
I would personally take it to a service and repair location and have them take a look at it, if you don't have TEP they should still swap it for 35$. Or have an answer as to what's going on.

When they had you try a factory reset, was it via the phone OS (Home>Menu>Settings>SD & Storage>Factory Restet) or was it via the dial pad ##786#, edit, MSL/master subsidy lock? Have you had any luck, taken it to a repair store?
Hello,
So before today I was on the $50 unlimited plan on prepaid, which I filled up every month and I had never bought a phone from T-Mobile.
Today, I went in to buy the HTC One and I said I wanted the phone outright. They checked my account and said I am qualified. They also said that I can only do it with the $70 plan. Is this true? How do I change back to the $50 plan?
Also, they said 90-days for unlock. Is this true or can I do it before?
Crazysah
Also, they made it seem like I am now on postpaid instead of prepaid?
Can someone help shed light on this?
Sounds like the in-store people just f'd you over and changed you to postpaid without telling you. You'll probably have to get on the phone with customer service and fight with them for a while.
As for the unlock thing, there are tons of sites that will provide SIM unlock codes for a fee (usually like $10-$20), or T-Mobile will give people whose accounts are in good standing (or something) the code after 90 days. But I think you might be confused between SIM unlock and bootloader unlock. If you want to take your phone and use it on AT&T or in another country's network, you need SIM unlock. If you want to root and install custom ROMs, you need bootloader unlock. You can unlock your bootloader whenever you want from HTCdev for free.
Yeah, I'm talking about SIM unlock only. I need that as I live in India 4 months of the year. Is there anyway to change from postpaid back to prepaid? I don't want to be on postpaid at all. They said there was no other way I could buy the phone. I want the $50 plan (not the $70 one they put me on!)
He jagged you big time bro... But fear not!
If you haven't activated the sim on the plan yet then all you gotta do is call 611 T-Mobile from your PREPAID sim and tell them to active the other sim for you. Your number/plan will transfer over just fine.
If you already switched plans then you will need to buy another sim and do the above
Simple eh?

So, when I call them what do I tell them? He said that the SIM he put into the HTC One has a temporary number and either that SIM or the SIM in my current phone (HTC Explorer) will get a message saying it is activated. I haven't gotten any message now. So what can I do?
At the moment, my HTC Explorer with current SIM is still working and the new one is temporary but I think still working.

It seems that the card is already activated. You cant just deactivate a card and reactivate it. Once deactivated you cant reactivate it, EVER.
Youll need to deactivate it to go from post to prepaid. You will need a new micr-sim and either:
1) slip it in the phone and it will work
if this doesnt work then there is step 2
2) call 611 from prepaid phone and tell them you want to transfer your number to other new sim. They will ask you for sim #. DONE!
As for this other plan they activated.. ask the prepaid person to transfer you over to post-paid customer service and talk to them about deleting that account. They cant do it, but they can refund you the money and let it not charge you ever again (if already charged)
All these steps should work so long as you paid for the phone in full. If not, you are bound by the terms/conditions to keep the post-paid account or to pay the phone off in full to get pre-paid.
I called them up and they just switched my account from postpaid to prepaid, gave me an unlock code and also activated Wifi calling for me. It was as easy as asking them to do it. The customer care was super helpful. I haven't received any of the confirmation emails they said they would send but I think I'm all good.
Anything else I need to be worried about?
Sorry if this is in the wrong place, first time poster here.
In December I purchased a nexus5 off of some guy that was selling one in my local area. He seemed like a good guy, the phone was in the original box and I was pumped at getting one for a bit cheaper than they are on the play store. Although this last week it randomly could not connect to the network, so I called Telus (my Canadian provider) and after a half hour of troubleshooting they told me that the IMEI is blacklisted as a lost or stolen device? I feel pretty ripped off and disappointed. I found the guys email that I brought it from and tried to contact him but he wont answer his phone, texts, or email. So I don't know what to do? Am I just screwed and forced to buy a new phone? is there anyway I can change the IMIE address? Or anything that anyone can recommend I should attempt to do? Thanks in advance for any help that can be supplied!
Always check before buying. If it is stolen (instead of lost) then you should turn it in to the police. But there is no way to tell and the provider will never tell you which.
It also isn't unheard of for a telco to incorrectly block a phone. I'd try arguing your case since you used it for a month before they shut you down.

Thanks for the input. Who would I contact about arguing it? I talked to someone at Telus for a good half an hour, and they just told me that they have no control blacklisting the IMEI. They would if say i was under contract and I didnt pay my bill. But I am off contract and just put their SIM in my unlocked device. The person told me that say for example if the phone was stolen from BestBuy in novemeber, it could have worked this entire time because it took bestbuy this long for them to put the numbers in there system, and it finally just caught up with me. And also, my SIM works in my friends nexus4, so it doesnt have anything to do with Telus, its an issue with the phone not getting access to the towers. And if it is blacklisted on the national list for being lost or stolen it wont work on any of the carriers in the country... So i dont know what to do
Bought a used HTC One M9 (Sprint). ESN is OK, but after purchase learned 'Owner Mismatch / FED Not Met', which I think means it's not stolen but a previous owner owes Sprint. The seller says he bought it used also and it's not him who owes Sprint, and can't or won't help me.
I paid a lot for this and need to activate it somehow, somewhere. Currently with a Sprint MVNO but open to moving to any network where I can activate it. Can it be used on a GSM network, or just CDMA?
What do I need to do to finally use it? ASAP, please, as in my frustration I just broke my current POS.
Thanks for any and all help!
Outta luck. Get a full refund if you can. Sprint's got a really nasty policy when it comes to unlocking for cricket/boost AND it's CDMA only so... Unless you're gonna to global to like Korea or India you can't activate it anymore. The only methods left are things like editing IMEI, but that's illegal lol.
I'd like to use the phone, and though I could ask, I doubt the seller (an individual) is going to agree to a refund.
Can you tell me or point me where I'm likely to find accurate directions and the program or tool to edit the IMEI? The phone's not rooted (nor have I experimented with that), but I can be careful (with guidance) if that's my only real option.
Thanks for helping!
I was told there's a guide to repairing (changing) an IMEI number here at XDA, but haven't found it. Can someone correct me? Also, as a clueless noob, any and all advise on the subject would be greatly appreciated.
Phone is an HTC One M9 for Sprint, bought used. Clean ESN (not blacklisted, stolen or reported lost), but previous owner owes Sprint money, I'm told when trying to activate it. I'm with a Sprint MVNO (Kroger i-Wireless, that allows bring-your-own-device, but since I can't return the phone to get my money back, willing to move to any service where I can activate it.
Not clear on this stuff, but I don't have it unlocked (boot, S-ON, or carrier) not is it rooted, though I'll do whatever it takes to be able to use it (myself or pay someone else to do it).
Please help.

yeah, get a refund or give up...editing the imei isnt like editing a build.prop heh...and if you cant get a refund get something for it as its now a paperweight, if you have money then just simply go buy a used one online from swappa, ebay etc..
Sorry to hear about your troubles. Sprint is a real bastard with FEC. This phone can do GSM, you could take it to T-mobile but you would first need to do a simunlock on the phone. There are two kinds, domestic sim unlock and international sim unlock. You will need to have a domestic sim unlock done on your phone before it will accept a t-mobile sim card. Also, the phone will do voice and 3g okay but LTE support is limited (sprint version does not support all of the lte bands which t-mobile uses).
Honestly you are probably better off selling the phone on Swappa (assuming you werent able to refund from seller). Phones with FEC problems will usually work on Sprint directly, but not with MVNOs. When buying a sprint phone for a MVNO always ask the seller to check the IMEI at your operators website or ask for the IMEI to check yourself.
May be useful hint regarding Mismatch or FED problem
Old post, but there may be people searching high and low with this very problem and I hope this helps someone.
Domestically, it just may hypothetically be possible to go ahead and activate the phone with prepaid Sprint. Without purchasing a plan, even, just getting the number assigned. Maybe you would need to deactivate the phone online, or it may not even matter. Then, it's a possibility an mvno such as....ring+ may accept and activate the esn you provide when you check for the eligibility online.
Then after you have successfully gotten your assigned number, maybe an hour later you might decide that ring+ isn't right for you after looking at the prices and stipulations more closely and deactivate device.
Then, you may find that you are able to activate your phone on the mvno of your choice.
Maybe I know of someone who thought they were buying a brand-new never activated Sprint-branded phone that could be used on an mvno and ended up accidentally finding a way. Or thought that since the phone was used and deactivated and had that Sprint brand on it but no indication that it was a prepaid device and not postpaid that a Sprint mvno of their choice would accept.
