So i have EvilEris on my phone atm and it works great i have it OCed at 768 but i see some people have their phones over clocked at higher speeds. Is there something im missing because whenever i try to put it higher my phone just restarts. If theres anything i have to do please point me in that direction. I know i run the risk of it overheating but i like to push the boundaries a little bit, Thanks in advance
The thing with overclocking is that not all phones are created equal. Not every processor can handle running at 806 or so and then some can all day without breaking a sweat. This goes with pretty much most electronic things. With that being said, there are always a couple of things to play with to try and max it out. Do you have JIT enabled? I understand that can make a difference on some phones as it is not entirely stable with everything. Also, personally, I could not OC to 806 till I started running Froyo roms. I have tried 4 different ones (and have stayed with CELB 1.4) all while hitting 806 without it even heating up as much as when I ran 768 on 2.1 roms. Really though, just because your phone is turned up as much as possible, doesn't mean it will automatically be faster. Some report no differences between, say, 710 and 768 on their phones. So, just like when you drink too much (me, last night lol) and your liver says no more and you hurl everywhere, your phone turns off saying no more when you push it too hard. Hope this makes sense somewhat...lol
The reason overclocking exists is because chips are shipped at a lower level when they actually can functiona t a higher level. Processing has to do with the wafers on the chip and there's no way to garauntee the exact number you'll get per chip so they just find the minimum number and ship all of the chips under that minimum number. This means some lucky people get chips capable of going way higher and some people get chips that can't handle that speed.
Im not familiar with JIT, not sure what it is. Would that possibly do anything to maybe get my processor running higher? Will it work on EvilEris? Yeah i know theres really no difference in the speeds that much but i just like to push it a little higher for fun lol, i just like to have my gadgets running at their best possible specs
I'm not sure if it'll run on Evil Eris but you can look for a thread by jcase called Universal JIT update and try it out. It isn't very stable though, especially on Sense ROMs. However if you change your Dalvik Heap to 24m I've heard it helps. It doesn't really speed up your processor, just the way your phone handles things. I've noticed a difference with it enabled. As for what it is well: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Just-in-time_compilation
I used Universal JIT with my Evil Eris. Don't bother, it "speeds things up" in some sense but it's really not worth it. Mflops nearly double but that literally means nothing other than your mflops are doubled.
Hmm, it looks interesting. Im going to look into it a little more and see if its worth it or not. Ill probly use it for future roms like Froyos when they get working flash(Only reason im staying with 2.1 roms atm). Thanks for the info on it
just for reference, my phone will lock up at any settings over 710. Droid Kevlar's phone is OC'd at 806!
my phone kicks all sorts of ass at 710 so I am happy. I think we all get obsessed and when this phone takes over your life (like it did mine) you start to seek out better and better performance when its already good enough as is (assuming you're rooted)

Exactly, Im happy that i have it set to 768 because i dont have to deal with that tiny lag that always annoyed me before i rooted my phone. Once i got setcpu i saw the difference and wanted to try to push a little more. I bought setcpu instead of getting it for free because i wanted to give back in a sort of way. But im happy with it, i have no problems with anything as long as i have a good rom on it

i suffer from the grass is always greener syndrome, which in this case means + the next rom is always faster syndrome.
I should be happy with my rooted phone and I am. But still I read the forum and think wonder what Kaos Froyo is like?
Yeah I get that too lol I tried almost every Rom except the ones that I didn't like the themes

Really...it seems there a lot more I have to learn about this before I do anything because now I might start using kaos froyo. Also I heard/read google was making froyo faster because of flash so maybe the UI is faster also?
Sent from my Eris using XDA App
Froyo is basically a 2.1 update, so imagine 2.1 but reworked to be faster. They basically streamlined 2.1 completely and made it use a compiler to speed things up. I won't get into how compilers work but basically they can/will slow everything down unless things are streamlined for them. That's why on 2.1 JIT can be a nuisance but sometimes quite nice, depending on when/ what it is being used for. On 2.2 everything is pretty much made for JIT so it's all quite a lot smoother/ faster.
I personally use tazz Cyanogenmod 6. I've tried every froyo ROM at least once (there aren't too many lol) but this is by farrrrr my favorite.
Hmm well when I get sober ill have to try this jit out but I'm way too wasted to flash a rom atm, I'm lucky I have auto correct on my phone or it'd be all gibberish

Hello fellow EVO 3D users! We started this thread for a few reasons. First, we are helpful, good at troubleshooting, and we know android. Second, we used to be noobs, and haven't forgotten. Third, less clutter around here would be nice.
team d3rp is comprised of:
myself, ranger61878, pstevep, thoughtlesskyle, vanessaem, dkdude36, jdeloach, steelH, and fdb8231.
You can ask literally any question you want, we will try to help. Ask for links, zips, mods, root info, etc. Please search first, then ask for help. We may give you a little heat for being a d3rp, because it's fun, so don't take it personally.
Thanks in advance for asking your questions and requests in here, and NOT starting a new thread.
For requests, feel free to ask for whatever. We will try to create/modify what you want, but sometimes we won't be able to, or we won't want to lol. Just remember, if we can't do it or point you in the right direction, you're in the same boat as before you asked. No matter what we should all enjoy learning from each other.
Continue on with the questions. d3rp d3rp...
We now have a chatroom (WIP), try to find us there >

I gotta say, aftermarket accessories may be where we draw the line on knowledge lol. I read that link, it said "for devices compatible with 5v/2000mA" so, I guess I don't know for sure. But, a 5 dollar USB charger will almost surely not hose down this device, it can transmit streaming HD thru that same port, so it's probably fine.

Are you on stock, stock w/kernel, custom ROM? Also, I assume you are constantly in the same roam area, and now it doesn't work? Are you sure it's just your phone? I guess since s-off is done throught the radio it is possible that s-off did it, but I doubt it. And what have you already tried to do for a fix?
s-off; Root; OTA Updates
I've been reading with great interest all of the threads about s-off, rooting for the EVO 3D. I have never rooted a phone before (although I did jailbreak a friends iphone a couple of years ago). Here's my question:
Is it possible to get s-off, root, recovery - keep the stock ROM and still take OTA updates?
The reason I ask is that there are still a few things that I expect the next OTA update will fix such as the icons going default for any app stored on the SD card after reboot.
For now, I would like to be able to use apps that require root but still be able to use the OTA until such time as I decide to flash a custom ROM.
Thanks in advance.

Yes. s-off exploits the radio so OTA updates wont affect it.
Question regarding OC
I don't consider myself a n00b, but I am confused with the overclocking on this phone. I am coming from an EVO 4g, and did plenty of overclocking on it. What I noticed with the original EVO was that the performance benchmarks increased when it was overclocked. Once it reached a certain clock speed, then it would crash if it was too high. I keep seeing people say that benchmarks don't matter. I understand where they are coming from, but this is different.
Stock kernel with Viper ROM, my 3d scores in the 2000's consistently with Quadrant. If I overclock it to 1.5, it significantly drops. It's even worse when overclocked to 1.7 (the score is around 700). The phone does not crash though. People keep saying that this doesn't matter, but I have to disagree. As I am running Quadrant, I can visibly see the test animations are choppy and the FPS are much slower for each given test. Also, the database writes are taking longer. This would explain such a poor Quadrant score.
So... my questions are:
Is Quadrant just not optimized for a dual core processor? Why would it run so smooth stock, but then get all choppy when OC'd?
Maybe there is something off with the OC part of the kernels? I've tried both Silverneedle and RCMIX. Both give me the same results.
I've tried SetCPU with poor results. Then I uninstalled it and just used Viper's built in Daemon. Same poor results.
Do I have an inferior processor that can't be OC'd to even 1.5? My understanding of this chip is that it is actually a 1.5ghz chip that is being underclocked by HTC from the factory.
Sorry for being lengthy, but I've read through so many posts, and I'm tired of reading that "benchmarks don't mean sh*t".

I would avoid the OTAs if you can, because they will take away root, and I am sure we will get the GOOD parts of each OTA in here as a flashable zip. OTAs are notorious for patching root, so be weary, and wait to flash them until you read about them here first.

Vipers Daemon is the reason you were getting great scores but once you flashed a kernel the daemon will no longer run even if you flash back to stock kernel, you will have to re-flash viperRom to get the daemon to run again until viper releases the daemon alone as a flashable file.

IMO quad is NOT dual-core friendly, please use CF bench (made by chainfire on xda), I get sweet scores with that one. Using netarchy at 1.7 stock ROM.
You *might* have a chip that should stay at 1.2, who knows...
quads don't mean sh1t lol.

I read from the devs that flashing OTA are safe since the exploit is via the radio. Think your wrong on this one, but its never a bad idea to be safe and check here before you accept an OTA.

Alright let me explain...
First you need to keep in mind that the kernels are in their beta stages. I had a quadrant score an 800, but my phone operates fine and plays games fine. Some of these kernels have the multiplier intervals wrong. I can get into that if you need me to, but anyways, on forth. There is a possibility that the CPUs on the EVO are actually lower binned chips. Now why do I say this? Because it has come to mind that overclocks vary, but like I said... The kernels are in their beta stages. Ill get in depth if you need me to about the processors and the bins.
Appreciate my help? Thank me
When I make a roaming call it says welcome to Verizon you are calling fron an invalid number please call your customer service also my data works

OK heres a dopey question from a dopey chef.
Right now I have twrp recovery and its cool but I'm stuck in old ways. Can I download Rom manager and flash cwm over twrp? And if it does work, there won't be any issues? I know everyone.... twrp smokes cwm but that's what I'm used to. Then again.... if all the devs go with twrp then I should stay with twrp right? And blah blah blah? Lol

No problem with flashing CWM within Rom Manager, just make sure you have quick boot disabled under your options (phone options that is) or when you boot the recover (since quick boot doesnt shut the phone all the way down) you will still see TWRP... TWRP owns though, just with the compress nandroid alone.

We're sorta both right. I would just hate to see someone trust an OTA, like the one when they make the bootloader, which could lockdown the whole phone, no root, who knows. It's safer to wait, like we both said
First I really want to thank all developers for their hard work. These are problems that I am having and by no means does this mean that I feel like someone didn't already do a great job.
What is going on with 2.3.4?
Linpack went down, 3d performance went down, proper cpu management went to crap and beyond (at least for me).
I went back to 2.3.3 and every bench is higher. Went back on 2.3.4 to check and fair enough it's true.
How come we started with 2.3.3 and made it fast and now that we are on 2.3.4 we have learned so much from it and yet we cannot really make it faster then 2.3.3.
I have 2 EVO's one with hboot 1.4 and one with hboot 1.5 both with s-off that i have tried this on.
Can someone please enlighten me on this? Do i need to swap my phones? We removed logging and with all that the phone seem sluggish.
I know Quadrant doesn't matter, but to see 3d stuff lagging on every oc kernel on 2.3.4 is sad to say the least.
Take your own advice.
To OP, I haven't noticed that to be honest, 2.3.4 seems faster and more efficient than 2.3.3.
I don't know about the lagging on the OC kernal though, hopefully someone can post about their experiences with that.
Edit: I'm planning on installing a Stock OC kernal, is that what you're having problems with, a stock that can be overclocked?
dont complain unless you are sitting behind a computer writing code. that's all im trying to say.
it's tiring to see thread after useless thread complaining about something retarded. i'm sure a lot of the dev's appreciate that....

Thank you for posting. I just wanted to know if it's my phone.
Devs have done amazing thing with the 3VO and i really appreciate them. I probably just have bad hardware.
well maybe not... all bull crap aside let's try to work this out...
are you running any custom roms right now? mods? what do you have done to your phone currently? by sluggish, do you mean like EVERY task you perform, large or small, is choppy to the point where you can barely use it?
I have hboot 1.5 unlocked with s-on.. i have use both 2.3.3 and 2.3.4 roms.. to be honest 2.3.4 benchmark for me are much higher and runs better as well.. Well thats just me...

That can probably be done with this phone since it uses the same chipset as the E3D and Sensation. Once I get mine next tuesday/wednesday ill see what I can do about getting this module to work.
If anyone takes a look at it, post anything you have tried. This could in theory at the very least allow an undervolt which would help offset the LTE power sucking.

It took a few days to get that inc port almost bugfree (usb pc transfer wouldn't work) but it was otherwise fine iirc. I hope that with support and other work to use as examples i can make some stuff for this device that isn't either a variation of AOSP or a sense port that has some serious drawbacks.
I am personally more interested in the possibility of underclocking and undervolting than OCing. Or maybe OCing and undervolting like I did with my droid x - can really help save some battery and allow the phone to sip less juice. This phone is so new I am getting ahead of myself, but hopefully in time we can get root/roms/OCing and undervolting apps to work on the Rezound.
I normally run my battery on performance mode on all my phones. I set it to normal, and with the equivalent usage I get 1/3 better battery life. I even leave all my antenna's on(except WiFi when I am away).
Just to let everyone know what I tried. I took the file for "unsupported phones" from the link's thread and changed the version number to match the rezound, which is -- 2.6.35.13-g20c5d1d -- . As you can see it was not just the ending part starting with the 'g' that needed to be changed as ours is 2.6.35.13 and the file was made for 2.6.35.10. But since a reboot resets everything I tried it by changing only the part starting with 'g' and it failed saying "Exec format error". So I then changed the entire version string to match ours and adb actually completed the task but the phone rebooted immediately and everything was wiped out again.
I did this before the kernel source was put up on the forums but since I dont have ANY knowledge of messing with kernels I am no help there, but hopefully this can help someone get this mod going for the Rezound.
we don't have perma root like the 3vo did so I don't think this will work until then. But this was a band aid until the kernel source was released so this won't even be necessary anymore.

The guy who made Setcpu made a script that allowed oc on the stock kernel on the 3D. It was before perm root. It was right after agrabren found the first exploit and a reboot would return the phone to stock. You temp rooted ran the script from adb and used Setcpu to oc.. Some of the smoothest kernel action the 3D had.. I'm sure same thing is potentially there, just need someone smart enough to do..

Cool. I did find a tidbit that might (don't get your hopes up and basically pretend I didn't even say this) make root last longer. Obviously until I have my rezound for the next few days I can't even think about testing anything.
Then put it out there for us to test! Don't be selfish! lol

I will once I get around to writing it. I am in class right now then I am driving 5 hours home. So maybe tomorrow afternoon Ill get a script working. Also, I may have figured out a way to disable elements of sense in an automated script(for those that don't like sense).

It took a few days to get that inc port almost bugfree (usb pc transfer wouldn't work) but it was otherwise fine iirc. I hope that with support and other work to use as examples i can make some stuff for this device that isn't either a variation of AOSP or a sense port that has some serious drawbacks.

Since I happened to venture to theses parts since our buddy plat ventured to this. I am a bit surprised to see you switched. How ever the module you are talking about in the op I am pretty sure you can't just hex edit the kernel version. As the kernel will be different for the device compared to that of the evo 3d. If it is anything like doing the g2 version for the htc merge that is. Where it had to be recompiled to work correctly.
I am sure one of the dev's familiar in here with building source code could get it done up. If it works after that I am unsure. Though con you ported the sense hd rom from the inc to the desire. That was the only one that you had ported. Followed by you followed samuel2706's guide and other info he gave you. Then you came to me to ask how I fixed the mms and verizon branding in the rom. In which I told you how to fix it but you put it off as you fixed it. As you are putting off in here.
As more devs dedicate their work to ICS...I was wondering...way back when the EVO 3D first came out, there was a temporary root method, which among other things offered the ability to overclock (until a reboot).
I found one of the many original threads (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1159540&highlight=temporary+overclock) and it appears that the script provided attempts to replace the frequency table on the fly using "insmod". (There is a risk of a reboot if the phone is not idling when the mod is performed).
The actual file does not currently work, but I wonder if this could be replicated for the ICS HTC Kernel, while we wait for a dev to come up with a custom kernel.
Personally the linux 3 stock HTC kernel runs very good. Don't honestly see a reason it needs to be o/c'd. It's good on battery and most of us want that overall anyways. IMO I'd wait til the kernel devs work on something again.
