Titanium Backup Error on 2.3.3 - XPERIA X10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi!
I've installed the 2.3.3 upgrade today on my phone, but Titanium Backup won't work anymore. Every time I start it, it says: "Sorry, I could not acquire root privileges..."
Other applications work fine and have root access - I tried Root Explorer, Terminal Emulator, BusyBox Installer and MyBackup. They all work fine.
I have on my phone:
- Superuser v2.3.6.1 (Database Version 5)
- Su binary v2.3.1-ef
- BusyBox v1.17.2
- Titanium Backup v3.9.0.1
- Android 2.3.3, BaseBand 2.1.71, Build 3.0.1.G.0.75 (DooMLoRD pre-rooted with xRecovery 0.3, from here)
Does anybody else have this error?

Wrong section, this belongs in Q&A, but.....
Click the Problems? button on the bottom right of the app. TB will prompt to download it's own local version of busybox. This may help your problem.

Try clearing the data from superuser. Doom had some left overs in there. After that TB should be able to get root.

Hi!
Sorry, you are right. @MODs: please feel free to move the thread to Q&A.
I pressed the "Problems?" button, but it only gives me 3 options:
- See Wiki
- Preferences
- Upgrade Superuser
I've tried the last option and updated Superuser and su. I have now:
- Superuser v2.3.6.3
- su v.2.3.2-efgh
- forgot to mention before, that I have only the free version of TB.
But still the same error Other apps work, but Titanium Backup still can't get root access.
BTW what has BusyBox to do with root access? Titanium Backup fails at getting root access (through the "su" binary). The BusyBox check comes only after it has been granted the root permissions...

Try Wolf's rom, it is working flawlessly there!!
regards

there is a newer busybox 1.18.4
try that

Strange, when I press problems, it gives a pop-up offering to download a known good version of busybox.
Anyway, try opening the superuser app and clearing the app list. TB can sometimes act up during su request and you never see the request. If you have a task manager, kill TB before trying again or reboot.

Hi!
Thank you very much, that did the trick!!! I cleared the data on both TB and Superuser, now it's working!
It also seems, that TB is using his own version of BusyBox ("1.18.4-Titanium from app") not the one already installed (1.17.2).
Thanks again everybody!

The two attacments in the first post are different. One is UniversalAndroot.apk 153kb (1st) and the second is X10Root.apk 626kb (alternate). Will the Mini get rooted with the first file or second file or both ? (I cannot test as I have a rooted phone with "Exploid" method).
Secondly this has an option to unroot the phone. Did anyone test that ? And lastly can a phone rooted by "Exploid" or "Bin4ry method be unrooted by this?
Lastly thanks to the orginal developer & account1 for making "Rooting" such a hassle free job.

I'd be really interested to know the answer to this question too.
As far as I can tell no it can't be unrooted with the apparently, it is slightly different to the screenshot posted but it does work to root the phone and is by far the easiest way to do so, also, doesn't seem to be spyware or malware as far as I can tell, no suspicious processes running that I can find
Sent from my E10i using XDA App
I used the app. From the alternative link, not the universal root from the first link, thought it didn't work for ages until I realised it doesn't seem to install busybox, used titanium backup to download busybox and from then on its been fine, phone now devoid of all bloatware
Sent from my E10i using XDA App
Does it work also on the MiniPro?
Certainly should do, its just the exploid root method but in a one click app and we know exploid works on mini pro

is Titanium backup only way to remove the SE apps? Tried with ES filexplorer with no luck.

don't know if its the only way, think it can be done by connecting to the computer and using busybox commands but as a noon to all this I found titanium backup a much easier option, just backed up the phone and then killed some bloatware!

If I am not wrong you have to use SU command first to get root access. If that is not working, Try installing the .apk using a root explorer such as ES File Explorer or File Explorer....
also make sure that install from non market sources is ticked from within settings

I have tried the same commands from the windows cmd:
Code:
adb shell
$cd /sdcard
$pm install apk.apk
without SU and even the device isn't rooted ,and it works
but it doesn't work when I try the commands directly from the android terminal emulator
I am asking this question because i want to develop a program not just to install apk package

If you try it in gingerbread it will work. I have tested it. But on ICS it will not work. It is a bug in ICS su binary or in busybox.
I have tried terminal ide and tried to do the same thing on another device with Gingerbread and on Froyo

I have also tried to do the same thing on HTC Deire with CyanogenMod 7.0 ROM and kernel g37556d9

same here
i am also trying to install an apk from terminal on my phone (htc desire currently trying out an ICS rom). I do not have a file browser so cannot install from that. i do not have adb as i am at work and cant put it on the pc. i do not have market access on my phone because i am on a boat halfway between norway and scotland. so my only option is through terminal.
i have tried the install command, the pm install command, the am start command to get androids built in package installer to do the install and nothing works. i get exactly the same as the screenshot above.
i've also tried inserting the apk into the rom zip then resigning and flashing the rom again and that doesnt work either. the app i'm trying to instrall is es file explorer as this would then enable installing from the file browser.
there really must be a simple way to do this but i cant find one that works.
the closest i got was just using install as with this the icon appeared in my apps list (after a reboot) but the apk was just copied not properly installed so the app didnt work when clicked on.
any help here would be greatly appreciated
cheers
update:
DigitalPerson this may help you too.
i kept trying and then decided to try a different apk, this time astro file manager. the following worked (in ICS on my desire)
su
cd /sdcard
install com.metago.astro_247.apk /data/app/com.metago.astro_247.apk
so the reason is either a problem with the original apk i was using or just the naming convention. i.e. the apk name should be in its "com.company.app.apk" format which can hopefully be found online somewhere.
further update
just some more info.
now that i have successfully installed astro i tried installing the original es file explorer apk from within astro. it worked fine which suggests the apk is fine so it was just the naming convention for the apk that i needed to have right. i havent seen this described elsewhere but i dont think there are many people out there who would have run into this problem. also i'm just learning with android so although my reasoning points to just the name of the apk being wrong i could just have got lucky and it could be something else completely.
anyway i hope this helps someone

SuperSu- better SU app

You guys should try the SuperSU app by chainfire. It's a hundred times better than the usual SuperUser app. Trust me, you will be benefited. I am currently using it with gingercruzt- xs. Works great.
Install instructions:
1) Go to the play store and Install SuperSU.
2) Open it.
3) It will prompt for a binary update. Accept it.
4) After installation succeeds configure the app to suit your needs.
5) Reboot
Note- You can't use SuperUser(not SuperSU) app with SuperSU. Either delete it using a root browser or don't open it.
Cheers.
Oh really?
So tell me, what is there so much better than regular Superuser.
i use SuperSU with CM9 and it's a nice option for ics i think, but both apps are good, don't think that one is better, i only like the SuperSU interface more

Unless Superuser runs into problems, I won't change it at this point. Superuser just works... if and when I start learning to be a dev myself then I would need to understand su logs, but for the moment I don't need the granular control of SuperSU.
And I Quote......
"SuperSU takes SuperUser and enhances just about every bit of it! It comes with a better access prompt/logging/notifications, lets you configure notifications for each apps, unroot your device temporarily so you can access non-root-only services like Google Videos and more. These features are included in the free version while the pro version comes with features like an OTA Survival Mode in which SuperSU attempts making through an OTA update that normally removes root access, PIN protection, color-coded input, output and error command content logging...."

"SuperSU obviously requires root permissions to run, so be sure to root your Android device first. After rooting, you may install SuperSU so that it can manage root permissions. If you already have SuperUser installed, then you don’t have to do anything special: installing SuperSU automatically dethrones SuperUser from root management..."
"I’ve been using SuperSU for the past few weeks and, to be very honest with you, haven’t noticed any significant differences between it and SuperUser. Unless you’re an advanced enthusiast, you won’t either. But yes, the Android developer community has been singing praises for it, so we still highly recommend you get it for your device...."
For our phones, OTA update doesn't remove root anyway.
Other features seem a bit useless to me.

It's up to personal preference. But, I would use it mainly for the segmentation error free binary, ability to use su even when android is not booted and more sleeker and darker ui than superuser. It's binary updater is also good.

Guys, a lot of people started using this so I suggested that you guys should also try this out.

the only thing is the different su binarys, if u install the SuperSU su-binary the normal su app stop working because it isn't compatible with the su-binary from super su.
u can remove superuser.apk, BUT don't forget if u want to revert to the normal superuser u have to upgrade the su binary with it, others u will lose root access.

Hmm, so complicated, i've just installed this app but i am going to remove it now. I'm a general user, so using this app or a normal superuser app is not important for me. I just care that my phone is rooted. Avoiding trouble is better
I installed it quite a while ago.. Apart from the nice looking UI I didn't find anything else better than regular SU so I uninstalled.
Newb here.
I have just rooted my xperia z1and as per advice installed SuperSu.
I rooted because I was having SD card permissions problems.
Can you tell me how I can change permissions on Apps or sd card.

Doesn't work on my Z1. Happens like this:
Root... Check
Install SuperSu... Check
unintelligible Chinese. superuser... resulting in unrooted phone.
Another idea to get a nonChinese superuser?

Yes it does
Edit: I can't update SU binary with Supersu. :/
It not works with the 2.254 firmware and it gives you phone restarts when try to do any root thing for example delete a system file.
SuperSu does not work either. I can update the binary but gives you unlimited phone restarts right after boot. So bootloop.
I deleted it in safe mode.
Waiting for the new version. :\
I have now installed supersu and updated binairy.
also i have tried superuser from chainsdd ant had no bootloop anymore but lost root when removing the chinese version.
how do i delete the chinese superuser app without losing root?
EDIT:
Somehow i managed to root my phone while the chinese superuser was removed and it didn't come back after root using Vroot
so now i am using supersu and it's working perfect.
EDIT:
Phone force reboot when removing system app or changing /system to r/w.

use better this vRoot Mod edit: Links removed
After first start let it update itself to v1.7 and root your SP easy.
Then open flashtool and install busybox, phone reboots.
Open flashtool again and install busybox. now reboots should be gone.
now install recovery from SaM, download "Clockworkmod superSu" as flashable zip, go to recovery and install zip. now chinese Supersu is gone. :good:
when reboots will not be gone, then use this rebootfix
