[KERNEL]Silverneedle 1.0 (16-Aug-2011) - HTC EVO 3D

You didn't think I was going to hide away and leave everyone else to all the fun did you?
That's right, It's time for some more sense kernel lovin', only this time our platform has changed to the Evo 3D.
Now that HTC have been kind enough to get off their asses and release kernel sources (which I might add were partially incomplete, but thanks to toastcfh a buildable source tree was managed),
I bring to you a preview build of things to come from myself.
Current things of interest:
- CIFS
- TUN
- Overclock up to 1.7ghz (this will likely be expanded in future builds)
- JHash3
- The usual assortment of build tweaks that those familiar with my previous work have come to expect
- Base updated to 2.6.35.14
As always, all source code can be found at the github link in my signature.
Disclaimer:
You are responsible for taking on all risks inherent with the use of any custom kernel, overclocking, etc. Oh yes, and if this kernel should impregnate your daughter, also not my fault. ;D
Currently these are only tested against stock. Your mileage may vary on custom roms.
Downloads:
Flash these via a recovery.
I highly recommend (albeit I'm admittedly biased) using the Team Win Recovery Project recovery for the Evo 3D.
Silverneedle 1.0

Code:
Changelog:
Revision 1.0:
- Update base to 2.6.35.14
- Modifications to clock table to make clocks behave better
- Assorted tweaks
- Migrated to Anykernel for installation, this should prove to be more compatible with various roms
*Special thanks to cayniarb who saved me some time with some of his work done while I was on vacation, so I didn't have to reinvent the wheel.

Hopefully not. It makes it easier for CM devs to work out the bugs and kinks when they don't have a bunch of other kernels out there. I know they've requested devs on other phones to hold off on kernels. Wouldn't surprise me if they did the same here.

yea, cause I root and flash because I wanna use software of my choice hmmm.. i guess i shoulda bought a popular phone, er.. wait.. i mean one that was popular before it was pulled off the shelves.. now im stuck with stock or stock kernel, no oc above 1.6, and no native way to mod the lock screen.. WOO freakin HOO!!
and of course the asshole answer is "if you want XXXXXX then learn to dev.." yea right..
oh well.. at least its a 1/2 step above owning a Thrill. as far as options go..

Do you want to get people mad at you? Show some patience. More dev work is available to this phone than most if not all new phones on the market.
For your sake from the responces that a comment like that will draw, I hope you're joking.

No respectable kernel offers OC over 1.6
The only person who claims OC higher than 1.6 is Mr. "snake oil" Tegrak, and he's too busy violating the GPL to back up his claims.
Nearly everything in my kernel was pulled from the CM7 source base, and I have provided atinm with patches for any significant modification/bugfix. If you could flash my kernel on CM7 you would see little to no difference.
The device has only been pulled from shelves in LTE markets where AT&T is aggressively marketing LTE devices with availability shenanigans and extra discounts to drive adoption - most of these markets are ones where stores didn't stock the I777 in the first place.
CM7 developers make the same request on ANY phone that has an official CM7 port. It's the CM7 way.

Methods of flashing
Joeykrim's "flashimage gui" app on the market using one of the zImage files from the zips
(To be added soon) Teamwin's "Kernel manager" app on the market.
Flashing via recovery using one of the zips here.
Recommended apps =)
CPU Master (personally what I use)
Nofrills - App to manage I/O scheduler, clock speeds & governors.
Adw ex or go launcher ex
Colorize widgets - Great widgets to replace the lpp ones for those converting to other launchers.
AppMonster(pro or free) - Great backup utility, automatically backs up all apps.(I like it better than TB)
GPS Status - Great application for finding satalites near you and helping get a quick lock.
Any go dev team app - Great dev team, all their apps are worth looking at.
Locating cpu% eating applications.
When in ADB shell type the following
top |grep app
or if your rom supports it htop is much better(Without grep, so just "htop")
Then look for items with high amounts of cpu% while the phone is idle.

Yeah I'm a always o/c to 1728 no problem any other time. I did turn it down too, and what had between going on is freezing and the screen getting strange while playing shadow gun and samurai 2. Other times there are just random reboots. I'm just going to assume the new screen improvements that caused this. So I went back to tiamat kernel sadly.

Linux 3.x kernel

Why are we still using a 2.6 kernel? Isn't ICS supposed to be a 3.x kernel? What are the benefits that we are missing out on by not having a 3.x kernel? Is there any difference in performance or features? I have no idea about any of this. I am hoping that someone can shed a little light on the subject for me.
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using xda premium
2.6.40 is 3.0
The prime is running 2.6.39 and 2.6.40 was the version that became Linux 3.0. We're just before 3.0. The big issue is that Android develops outside the Linux tree so they have to port Linux changes in to Android. That takes a while. The good news is that Android was merged in to the Linux source tree recently so they should track more closely in the future.

No it's nVidia's fault. The standard Tegra3 kernel is 2.6.39.
But anyway, we are not missing much at all.
As Gary posted Nvidia Google and Asus has a meeting this week. So at least there is hope they start pushing things forward soon It could very well be that the "gaming issues" discussed in another thread are related to the kernel as well^^ Not that i have an idea what exactly the kernel is doing but its the only explanation i could see with my limited knowledge
.21 is pretty great so far, but we're not quite there yet.

Apache incorporated the 3.1 kernel in the TF201 CM9 nightlys about 2 weeks ago (sorry - I realize you probably know this ). A lot of people were complaining about it since they were having problems, and he reverted to 2.6. I was pretty impressed with 3.1 - my wifi would occasionally drop off but the power consumption was a load better than the 2.6 kernel.
If anyone is unlocked and interested in how 3.1 runs on TF201, search back through the CM9 thread in the Development section. I am pretty sure that the 05/10 nightly uses the 3.1 kernel...

Gummy is sweet - I really liked it before I went back to my personal favorite - Eos Cornerstone nightlys. I used CM9 for several weeks but moved away from it when Gummy appeared. I will go back to it at some point - they're definitely pushing things in terms of development like using the 3.x kernel, getting the dongle working on a non-stock rom etc
Actually 3.x kernel has no essential features that must be implemented to Prime. I can count some I treat really useful: memory management changes, driver for Tegra AES hardware (will affect SSL and VPN performance, I think), maybe some changes in networking. Nothing we can't live without
Am I right?
Other Device with Android ICS and kernel 3+, work more smoother then with kernel 2,6.
And Google add Kernel 3 to Galaxy Nexus. If there is no more changes? why they do it?
But what about rumors. Asus Doing Kernel 3+ for Prime or We never get it?
Honestly I don't need more smoothness to my Prime and I even didn't overclock the processor yet.
Let Google experiment with Nexus, I need more stable software. There's enough bugs in the Prime, I don't need any more. Of course I'll try custom ROM with the new kernel, but only if it bring something really useful.

[ROM] [JEWEL] [AOSP] [4.3] [cfX-Toolchain 4.8.y+] codefireXperiment Official Nightly

Introducing codefireXperiment for your device! This OP is going to stay slim and bloat free, just like codefireXperiment. No marketing buzzwords either. We take such confidence in the speed and performance of this distribution, we challenge you to find a faster and more stable one!
Warning: we only support anykernel methods of custom kernel installation.
Here's a bit of info you may want on this project for how we do things differently:
CLICK HERE to find out more about the new team working on this project since our TeamEOS merger.
No features you don't need which slow the device down, or put your data at risk of being stolen. If you want to give it away, it should be your decision.
A fast and clean install with no UX decisions made for you. You make the ROM whatever you would like.
A team constantly exploring totally new feature sets and optimizations geared toward you, the user
We utilize a plethora of optimizations in a build system unlike any other:
Each build has a toolchain built for your device at the time of build. No more generic toolchain android builds.
Consistently updated upstream toolchain module source with our custom backports, fixes, and optimizations applied in a patch at build time.
Fully built utilizing Link Time Optimization (another custom ROM first). Feel free to google this one a bit to get an idea of the performance gain.
Many repositories have code fixes, cleanups, and many minor optimizations which are too generous to even speak of here.
Optimizations are toggled on and off based on device for the best experience we can acheive for your device without sacrificing any stability
Many Qcom optimizations and AOSP master (upstream) optimizations and fixes using device specifications to determine usage.
Fully built utilizing strict aliasing and isognu++11 mode.
Full "-O3" build. To those who don't know, this is the highest "optimization level" available in gcc that sets many other flags.

DISCLAIMER: I will not be held responsible for any damages caused to your device by flashing this ROM. Your warranty is now void.
By proceeding you accept the risks involved with flashing ROMS. While I test everything on my own device, I cannot garauntee yours will not explode into kittens and rainbows.
KNOWN ISSUES:
ROOT ACCESS : On-going disscusion within the team but as of right now root is not available to userspace. Root currently works over adb only. Flash the superSU.zip and carry on if you need root access for apps like TiBu or root file explorers. Otherwise you really don't need it
BOOT ANIMATION : i'ts just full of struggle, it's an old animation made for smaller screens. It freezes and goes blank screen on first boot. Don't be alarmed, it'll be OK. New custom boot ani is being designed now by a fellow team member
BROWSER : Ocassional FC on embedded browser streaming video. You tube and links that open a video player are fine, just embedded video.
ROM is still under construction so i'm sure more will surface but this should be more than ready to be a daily driver.

Features? Its more of concept than anything. Most ROM came from CMs base or AOKP's base and modify/customize into something else. This ROM is based/kept current directly off of googles AOSP master branch. There are some things pulled from CM/aokp for hardware compatibility and what not but the soul of the ROM is strict AOSP. After that its tweaked and optimized to make it as smooth, fast, and efficient as possible.
Simply put this is closest thing to pure AOSP brought to other devices besides the Nexus line.
You won't find all the built in mods and custom colors and what not. This is clean simple fast AOSP. As vanilla as possible.

Thanks man, from a respected dev that means a lot to me. In the short time I've been doing this this was by far my biggest challenge yet.

Project

Okay, so I may start a project next week. Just want to leave something behind when I go to the g3
Anyways I need feedback from the community to help
I'm thinking about bringing back the custom kernel. Its still a thought though because our kernel for all ROMs already include OC & undervolt ect.. Its also 3.0.101 which is EOL (end of life) and I don't want to port an entire 3.4 kernel
I'll port parts for fixes but to much work for the entire thing
Basically all I have now and things that I'm working on that tops the stock one is:
Updates from Google source that were missed
More gamepad support
Updated thermal driver
Working on memory mapping
OTG support (untested)
Other misc tweaks or fixes
There are also governor updates I want to look at
What I want to hear from you is any new features or support for something that goes in the kernel
Or any current issues you have with the kernel that comes in your rom

I will look into double tap to wake, I'm curious on the effect of battery life but that's what on/off features are for right
Also I don't have a DNA although if I did get it working I wouldn't mind giving the DNA devs a hand on merging it for them
EDIT: the DNA suggestion was a hint for me to port from there wasnt it lol you sneakky!

Some DNA devs do have it working on their custom kernels. Being able to port it from there to the rezound is another story. Maybe a former rezound developer could help. Ihatewebos does have dt2w working on his sense kernel. If this is something you want to do, maybe a pm in his direction could help you out, cause I'm only good at flashing what you all make lol
Beanstalk holds a special place in my heart.
