Any chance Firefox can be swapped out for chrome on webtop? I finally got ubuntu going and tried chrome. The speed of chrome just leaves me speechless on how slow Firefox is. And firefox is slower on webtop. I know im comparing intel to arm cpus and less ram but the difference is night and day.
i was at work posting this so i need to clear confusion. i got ubuntu going in virtual box on MY LAPTOP and tried chrome. it's silly how fast it is. and that's where/why i was comparing intel to arm cpus. i might change to chrome soon because firefox is letting me down lately. everyone once in awhile it hogs up my ram (i have 8gigs, btw) and i have to restart it. and i also have to clarify firefox is slow on webtop and i think chrome would be much better because of the limited 1gb of ram. i didn't know chrome could run on linux, so that's why i was asking. is there enough developer power to do it? sorry for the confusion. i get rushed at work in the blink of an eye sometimes.

no i dont think you can. i remember reading about it, not 100 percent sure and yes chrome is way better. how did you even do that, cause the forum on how to do it , is so complicated, i have done everything else lol, new rom, unlocked, and overclocked.

im on stock froyo using firefox 3.6.16 on webtop & thinking about updating to gingerbread to get the 'faster browsing experience of firefox 4'
-is this true? is webtop on gingerbread really faster? my froyo now is very stable battwise and all, its just the claimed faster webtop browsing thats swaying me to move to gingerbread

Currently on Atrix full Ubuntu 9 Chromium isnt supported.
In Ubuntu 10, it is, and Sogarth may someday give it to us!

Actually you can crosscompile the code to get arm support but javascript wont work..

Is it because of poor optimization, weak hardware, or both?
Really dissapointed by webtop speed. Do you think moto will be able to improve webtop via updates? I read a statement from moto implying that they want to continue this product idea, especially with quad core phones in the future. But it makes me ask, do you really need quad core to run freaking firefox?
Perhaps simply mirroring the phone would have been faster.

I can't say I have the same problem. I did notice some lag when I had a theme installed thoigh.
sorry to bump an old thread. I just got my lapdock and it seems painfully slow as well...
will overclocking and gb actually give me a noticable bump?
I know that there are trillions of threads out of there regarding the issue, and maybe, I'll even get some people telling me off for making a new thread about this, but does anyone have any news on any NDS emulator?
I think our Galaxy S II is strong enough to emulate the NDS.. The NDS has the following specs: (According to Wikipedia.org)
Resolution of 256 × 192 pixels
CPUs: Two ARM processors
32 bit ARM946E-S main CPU; 67 MHz clock speed. Processes gameplay mechanisms and video rendering.
32 bit ARM7TDMI coprocessor; 33 MHz clock speed. Processes sound output, Wi-Fi support and takes on second-processor duties in Game Boy Advance mode.
RAM: 4 MB of mobile RAM, expandable via the Game Boy Advance slot (expansion only officially used by the Opera web browser).
OR, if anyone else is ready to continue the development, it would be really great. I know I'm being selfish here as a newbie, but I think it would be really worth the effort, as there would be many people like me dying to emulate NDS on our phones..
True. But seems to be a pain to emulate. Let's just wait, stare, and see.

Yeah, I know how much effort it takes to emulate stuff, but still this project could be worth it. Believe it or not, we've all been waiting for a long time for this emulator.
The last version we saw for the nds4droid was v1.3, and no updates have been released thereafter, AFAIK... So, does any know about any version later than 1.3? *resumes hoping to play Pokemon Pearl on his phone someday*
i wish i knew how to code..i badly want to this fully functional!!
So do many other people.. Is there any way we could support the original developer with his project? I mean, if the dev wants to make this app usable, there will be many people who will be ready to donate to the dev for his hard work. Any possibility we could contact them?
Erm, I don't think I'll let this thread die.. Will someone be willing to help to keep this thread alive?
I just wanted to say that I have installed this on my GS2 running CM9 and it runs smooth as gameboid!
Only thing that needs fixing... no audio... if surely someone could work out how to enable audio, that is all this needs to run on modern day droids!

There are two emulators that were being developed but ceased; tiger nds and nds4droid.
The galaxy s2 is powerful enough to handle a nds emulator. It's not the phone that is running the games slow, and without sound, but the coding of the apks.

If i remember correctly the main reason NDS emulation on PCs took a while was because the coding was wonky, for example even the current NDS emulator on computers is poorly optimized
our SII's have more then enough juice to run it, but again i think adapting the code is the problem, guess all we can do is wait *waves surrender flag*
Am I the only one to notice this? anything I do on the laptop dock seems slow, even if it is as simple as opening the messages app on the phone or sending an email through the phone, it still lags even if I only have 1 or 2 tabs open on the laptop dock browser.
I have my phone overclocked and it runs amazingly by itself but the laptop dock doesn't run nearly as smooth. Is the OS just that crappy? Will running custom laptop dock OSs fix this or just add more features?
I have used the thread "Webtop Reloaded" to trim down my Webtop. I've also installed the Chromium web browser from another thread on this forum. Between those two, it's much faster (Firefox is still terribly slow, though), but still not quite as fast as my netbook was on a comparable linux distribution.
My hunch is that the nature of the Webtop being an OS inside of another OS combined with the crazy hacks that Motorola used to make it work cause it to be slow. It can be improved pretty significantly by switching to XFCE or LXDE, but it's still not fast like the Android OS. (This is my experience; I haven't overclocked much to speak of, and I'm certainly no expert.)
do you have a link to Chromium web browser install guide?
In case you haven't already found it, it's here:
[Webtop] Chromium-browser on Webtop(jaunty) with flash support(no dependency problem)
Switching to the 2.3.6 system/boot and webtop fruitcake made a positive difference (Firefox 8). I am not oc'd and the experience is fine. I have switched to using the lapdock in the am to view email, visit my favorite webpages and check Amazon mkt for the free app of the day. (my laptop sits in my safe gathering dust). Not as fast as a laptop but definitely useable. Also, when I am out of town the Citrix Xen Desktop (which my company uses) means I have all my software including Microsoft Office available on the lapdock. It is useable, also.
i always seem to have this issue.. but i assumed it was because of the different os i am using, i am on 4,0 now.. about to see if it is any better now that they have lapdock working.. so they say
I use my lapdock with my phone OC'd at 1.45 GHz, and it's barely usable.
1 GHz is simply not worth it. My boss has an Atrix, too, and once he saw mine on his lapdock, he asked me to root and OC his own phone.

I dont know what you all are talking about a slow web top experience. I have fast when I was on the Wet dream ROM and on ninja ROM. I have the lapdock working on cm9 but not web top. I love it. I use it for college.
Have you all tried those ROMS?

Since Xperia S has 2 cores CPU, I think there is sufficient for running desktop OS, like I heard Moto do. So, devs, what about run Linux, or even Windows?

Windows isn't possible, at least until someone dumps WinRT. Linux is possible as a chrooted system, but there likely will be problems. ICS will bring the 3.0.8 kernel, that might help.
if it virtual machine, i think efficiency of this is rather poor. What I suppoused - get custom ROM, like Android, but change Android (linux-based) to Ubuntu (linux-based), and customize bootloader to choose where to boot. Like i do using grub4 at desktop. My thoughts - my telephone efficient enough, like pentium 4, so i, regarding to Mhz and amount of RAM, can run Win XP like normal desktop based on P4. Amerite?

why it is useless? doing so, i can play some old games like diablo 2 or warcraft 2 at my phone, than it would be a low-end laptop, that cost me nothing and always with me at my pocket. my philosophy is to use one gadget for any purpose i wish. no cares of battery, it`s just might do it.

Well go ahead then. I don't think anyone is interested in that, especially considering you won't have telephony, GPU acceleration and likely sound.
Well, if you say so, I understand. And what about Ubunty. I even heard that Ubuntu dev are going to justify multicores CPU at phones with releasing Ubuntu for every 2x or 4x phones. Have you any info about it? Of course, it`s all not about any simulator, just about really booting OS.

Ubuntu for mobile is a long term project that isn't getting released any time soon. And it'll be likely using the Wayland graphics stack, so the same problems apply.

should be possible. once if got a Native Ubuntu with Dualboot on a HTC Desire HD - the Ubuntu there uses the same Kernel like the Android (was a 2.6.x kernel) - but it needs a lot of Work from a developer that knowns the Device and Linux well to bring it to work.
But also native, a linux will works poor on a Smartphonce, because a Desktop OS is not optimised for Use with fingers - everithing is to small, so you need a pen ore use just the shell.
a VR can be funny, becaus you can install every OS and simulate a x86 architecture.
the Easyest OS is Dos (just install the App Dosbox) - makes fun to play old Lucas Art Games with SCUM Engine again)
I was sitting down with my mate today and we were comparing our phones, i was praising android all along but when it came to web browsing Nokia just blew Galaxy away. Were on the same network, sitting in the same room, nokia had one bar more of reception, but speed of was like 10x faster on it. He just laughed at me... Im running Thebyani JB v.3, tried stock, dolphin and chrome browser, pretty much same speeds from them all. Any ideas? Cheers.

Well you can laugh back at him for having windows phone failure operating system, back in time when android did not exist, i still prefered symbian over windows os for phones, now vs android imho stands no chance, microsoft is ran by amateurs these days you can see their disgusting strategy at making operating systems, they release 1, fix a couple of bugs leave all other issues unsorted and get to make a new one, fix few bugs of that, leave all other issues unsorted, and make a new one and so on so forth...
As for windows 8, its the dumbest idea ive ever heard, you have the same operating system running on completely different platforms with different instruction sets making your apps available for windows 8 but not for arm processors for example, its just garbage in concept.
EDIT: oh and btw, his screen is inferior to yours, his video recording resolution is inferior to yours as you can 1080p and he can only 720p, his cpu is single core 1.4ghz, you have 1.2 dual core ghz which blows his away for multitasking, ur gpu also blows his away also.
The speed on my gs2 is pretty good with just 2 bars, with full bars is as fast as the phone can process the pages and that means fast enough to not keep you waiting, if hes faster then good for him thats all his phone is ever going to do better than you.
